The Hitman on Saturday, Free Horseracing Tips, 20 November

Its a huge day of action on Saturday, not least becuase we see the return of the Cheltenham Gold Cup Winner, Imperial Commander in Saturday’s Betfair Chase. Carl The Hitman Harris marks your card with the best bets of the day…..

Free Horseracing Tips

Kauto Star won the Betfair chase last year

Who can forget last year’s Betfair Chase when Kauto Star was lucky to win, but win he did, will Imperial Commander get a race today?

The reality is that Imperial Commander (3:25 Haydock) has 22 pounds in hand over nearest rival Planet of Sound, he should win this in a canter. There is no value in his price, but this is the banker of the day so whatever we back, we can double up with the Gold Cup Winner.

Dunraven Storm (12:40 Haydock) should trot up in the opener at Haydock, again no value but this is one to watch with a view to bigger prizes in the future. He was hammered by Cue Card last time and I would like to see that form well and truely franked, I think that Cue Card is a show in for the Supreme Novice Hurdle at Cheltenham, even at this stage.

Stagecoach Pearl (1:15)
is a decent horse and I have got this one in my notebook as one to follow. A winner of three of his last four starts, this is a tougher test but I think he will be up to it and will win again despite the rise in the weights and at the prices I make this my best bet of the day.

It is interesting that Master Minded (2:05 Ascot) steps up to 2m 3f, having been campaigned over 2 miles. This is not as cut and dry as most commentators would have you believe, there are plenty of question marks against Master Minded, not least the trip and the disappointing run when we last saw him at Cheltenham in March. In Albertas Run he has a worth opponent and it will not be easy. I think he will win, but it will not be easy. It would be good for him to go to Cheltenham in the best of form.

The Ascot Hurdle is a seriously good race. Won last year by Zaynar who is back to defend his crown, but I think in Silviniaco Conti (2:35 Ascot) he has a serious opponent who potentially could all the way to the top. I think that Paul Nicholls gelding will mainatin his unbeaten record. A very good race indeed here.

Have a great day, good luck.

Its Grand National Day and other than the Grand National itself there is a decent card at Aintree. Obviously the Grand National dominates the day. Here are your Free Grand National Day Tips.

The Grand National itself can go to Mon Mome.  I have already put forward my reasons why I think last year’s Grand National Winner will follow-up, sadly not at the 100/1 of last year. 11/1 looks a decent price in my book.

As an each-way big priced horse I have put up Joe Lively at odds of 66/1. A decent horse who I think will run a decent race, certainly a couple of quid each-way will give you a bit of fun!

Get all the Grand National Runners and Riders by Clicking Here…..

1:45 Aintree Pedlars Cross- Win. We were on at Cheltenham at odds of 7/1. We will not get those odds today and to be fair I think 11/10 is pretty skinny. Sadly I will probably let this one go off unbacked at that price but he does look the likliest winner. One at an each-way price is Bygones of Brid who is a nice horse who will like this softer ground.

Best Prices for 1-45 race;

2:15 Aintree French Opera- Win. 7/2 about French Opera looks a fair price. On official ratings he has eight pounds in hand and his second at Cheltenham to Pigeon island reads favourably. Nicky Henderson, will hopefully, continue the good form he showed on Friday. French Opera is my best of the day.

Best Prices 2:15;

2:50 Aintree, Khyber Kim- Win. Well done to Aintree for naming this race after Dick Francis. Khyber Kim and Zaynar were second and third behind Binocular at Cheltenham. I have always liked Zaynar and was a backer at Cheltenham but if this race is run true to form them Khyber Kim will finish ahead of Zaynar. At 13/8 Zaynar is too short, Khyber Kim at 9/4 is good value.

Cheltenham Festival 2010

Zaynar won the triumph hurdle in 2009 for Nicky Henderson

Celestial Halo could run a good race but he is not quite top top class, though should not be under estimated. I would be amazed if anything else was good enough to upset these three. Khyber Kim certainly is the better of the two in terms of value.

3:25 Aintree, Wogan- Win. No major play here but I do like Wogan. Certainly old Terry would be proud of the figures he has notched up of late with two big wins in a row. In a tough race, the one before the National, I will have Wogan each-way.

Grand National Tip…

The 2010 Grand National can go to last years winner Mon Mome. Here is our free preview of the 2010 Grand National…..

At Cheltenham the Gold Cup was all about Denman, Kauto Star and the winner Imperial Commander but in third place was a huge run from Mon Mome.

A 100/1 winner last year Mon Mome comes back to Aintree with a new jockey, Aidan Coleman who takes over from Liam Treadwell. I think he is still capable, despite the weight, of winning again. Turning for home at Cheltenham Mon Mome was miles back and ran on up the Cheltenham Hill, making up ground.

Venitia Williams will have him spot on for this and one thing we know is that he handles Aintree and those big stiff fences. In my view Mon Mome is the one to be on to take a back to back Grand National victory.

Binocular Gets Champion Hurdle Green Light as Geraghty Opts for Punjabi

Nicky Henderson has confirmed that Binocular will run in the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham on Tuesday. Third in the race last year, there had been a doubt about the participation of JP McManus’ six-year-old for some time following a couple of below-par efforts this season.

Tony McCoy rides Binocular in Champion Hurdle

Indeed, he had initially been ruled out of the race by Henderson on February 17 after suffering a muscle problem. But following a pleasing schooling session on Wednesday, he came through a gallop on Friday morning with flying colours. The recent Sandown scorer will be ridden by Tony McCoy.

Binocular will add a third string to the Champion Hurdle bow of the Seven Barrows handler, who will also be represented by the Barry Geraghty-ridden Punjabi and Zaynar, the mount of Andrew Tinkler. Binocular could finish only fifth in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle, but showed more promise when third in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton. He then won a three-runner race at Sandown but connections were not happy in the aftermath and he was ruled out of the Festival. Having gone back into training last week, Henderson is now satisfied that he should take his chance.

Punjabi…

Barry Geraghty has chosen to ride Punjabi in the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle. Nicky Henderson‘s stable jockey was aboard the gelding for his victory in the race 12 months ago and has stayed loyal despite having the option of partnering Zaynar.

The trainer confirmed riding plans for his three runners in the race, saying: “Binocular will be ridden by AP (McCoy), Barry (Geraghty) will ride Punjabi and Andrew Tinkler will now ride Zaynar.

“They are all very well and all three are pleasing me.”

Zaynar 8/1 for Champion Hurdle

Zaynar suffered a shock defeat in the Morebattle Hurdle at Kelso. The ground played its part in this defeat, no doubt but Zaynar looked far from a Champion Hurdle winner as he came up the hill. Get all the news at our Festival microsite.

Zaynar out to 6/1 with Stan James

The Champion Hurdle picture looks more difficult than ever. Zaynar is now 8/1 for the Champion Hurdle with William Hill and Ladbrokes as Solwhit is installed as favourite. For me however the ground was a huge factor and for a bit of value Zaynar may be worth a punt with headgear back on. Stan James reacted quickly to the defeat;

Solwhit is the new 7/2 favourite (from 4s) for the Champion Hurdle with Stan James following the shock defeat of Zaynar (6s from 4s) at Kelso earlier today; his Borders conqueror Quwetwo only holds a Festival engagement in the Arkle and is 20s from 50s despite never having jumped a fence in public.

Free Horseracing Tips

There is a familair pattern emerging, very moderate racing during the week followed by some cracking stuff at the weekend. Certainly that was the patter last week with history repeating itself this week.

That said if Kelso gets the go ahead we will see Champion Hurdle favourite Zaynar in action, yes at Kelso. A good performance will see his price shorten. The Champion Hurdle is the toughest race of the four majors to solve, so far, at least. To me it looks like Zaynar is ideally suited by a bit further than two miles, but we will soon see. Sadly there is no real competition, for Zaynar at Kelso but it is all about experience at this stage.

Here are todays Free Horseracing Tips for Thursday;

1:40 Kelso, Classic Cut- Win. Not a great Novice Chase, it shapes up as a match between the top two, James Ewart will be disappointed to come away empty handed. Our cause is further enhanced by the fact that Harry Haynes takes off a valuable five pounds and on what looks another low grade day, Classic Cut should win.

Cheltenham Festival 2010

Zaynar- Champion Hurdle Contender

3:20 Kelso, Zaynar- Win. This should be a formality and unless you want a decent lump of cash on Zaynar he will not be a backable price. But this is of great significance in respect of Cheltenham and the Champion Hurdle. A devastating win is what is required here and he could win by a big big margin. He should do that is for sure. Not a betting race but there are some specials for consideration;

Stan James zzzz special for this afternoon’s Morebattle Hurdle:

Zaynar to win by over 14l 11/10
Zaynar to win by under 14L 11/10
Zaynar to win by 14L 50/1
Zaynar must win or all bets lost

3:10 Ffos Las, Rapid Increase- Win. Tony McCoy has a fantastic strike rate at Ffos Las nand is clearly the man to follow at the new Welsh venue. Rapid Increase is looking for a three timer here today. The seven year old comes here five pounds higher than when winning at Folkestone last month but I think a win is well within his scope here. The danger would be Davis Pipe’s Shaking Hand who carries a penalty following a good win at Lingfield, last week. That was in really testing conditions which will have taken alot out of him. Another McCoy winner at Ffos las for me!

Carl Harris’ Free Horseracing Tips for Thursday 18 Feb;

  • 1:40 Kelso, Classic Cut- Win
  • 3:10 Ffos Las, Rapid Increase- Win
  • 3:20 Kelso, Zaynar- Win

Less than two weeks to go to Christmas and Paul Nicholls could play Santa Claus to punters with winners at Cheltenham on Saturday.

Of course the big race of the day is the BoyleSports.com Gold Cup which is very competitive but finding the winner will reward backers with a decent price. There is also some decent hurdle races to get stuck in to. I am hoping to get the Christmas cash and have already backed Paul Nicholls’ Poquelin to land the big race and go one better than his last run at the home of jumps racing. Here are my best bets for Saturday at Cheltenham;

13:15 French Opera, Win- I think French Opera is a decent chaser and still improving. Mind you he will have to defy a nine pounds rise in the handicap to win this competitive handicap chase. Paul Nicholls’ Free World just comes up short every time, in the famous colours and there are a host of decent horses but I really do think French Opera is decent and will be on at a good price.  Nicky Henderson is a trainer in form and I think will bag a couple of winners here today.

14:25 Poquelin, Win- Paul Nicholls was concerned about the ground for Poquelin “We’re racing on unused ground which wasn’t watered in October and we’re optimistic it’ll provide decent racing ground” he told the Racing Post. He ran a blinder in the Paddy Power Gold Cup last time, finishing second behind the very well handicapped Tranquil Sea and can go one better here. The Nicholls team are doing well and look the team to follow. Ruby Walsh is one of the best and will know just how to ride the race today. Punters have shorted Poquelin this week, but I think he is still value and will be backing him win and place for what promises to be a decent race.
Boylesports.com Gold Cup: 5-1 Atouchbetweenacara, 11-2 Poquelin, 6-1 Chapoturgeon, 9-1 Tamarinbleu,10-1 Razor Royale, Sky’s The Limit, 12-1 Hold Em, Skippers Brig, 16-1 Mount Oscar, 20-1 From Dusk To Dawn, Gwanko, Jayo, 25-1 Our Vic, Stan, 33-1 Bible Lord, 40-1 Idole First, Knowhere (EW 1/4 1,2,3,4)

15:05 Celestial Halo- Win. This race is of more interest to watch than to bet, given the price of the Nicholls runner. Punjabi is the Champion Hurdler and beat Celestial Halo by a neck, but makes his season reappearance against a horse who has had a run, in which he looked very well. Perhaps the price is a bit short but I will be backing him in a double with Zaynar.
Boylesports.com International Hurdle: 4-6 Celestial Halo, 11-4 Punjabi, 7-1 Medermit, 10-1 Khyber Kim, 20-1 Ashkazar, 66-1 Ebadiyan, 50-1 Songe (EW 1/5 odds 1,2,3)

Zaynar can Win the Relkeel Hurdle

Zaynar can Win the Relkeel Hurdle

15:40 Zaynar- Win. I think this horse is very special. Certainly having backed him for the Triumph Hurdle and the Ascot Hurdle I have done well from Nicky Henderson’s grey. We will not get the price we did on those occasions but he is a banker bet for me and should combine nicely with Celestial Halo for a double. I think Zaynar is the leading Champion Hurdle contender, for this year and Nicky Henderson will have a hat full of chances. Certainly I think he is better than Binocular and it would be interesting to see him take on Dunguib. Today though Zaynar should land the Relkeel Hurdle.

Carl Harris’ Best Bets for Saturday 12 December

  • 2:25 Cheltenham Poquelin- Win
  • 3:05 Cheltenham- Celestial Halo- Win
  • 3:40 Cheltenham- Zaynar- Win

Big Weekend Of Racing In Store at Cheltenham

Champion Hurdler Punjabi makes his reappearance in the Boylesports International . Punjabi faces a maximum of nine rivals including Celestial Halo, who he beat a neck in last year’s Champion Hurdle.

Zaynar to run at Cheltenham

Zaynar to run at Cheltenham

Formerly known as the Bula, this important trial race looks certain to influence the betting for next year’s Championship race as the winner and runner-up in the 2009 running look set to meet again.

Paul Nicholls is confident Celestial Halo can build on last month’s impressive Wincanton success in the Boylesports.com International Hurdle at Cheltenham on Saturday.

Last year’s Champion Hurdle runner-up will lock horns with his Festival conqueror Punjabi and the trainer said yesterday: “Celestial Halo is in good order. He came out of his race at Wincanton very well – he surprised me there with his performance – and he looks like he has improved a lot for the run.” The sponsors have Celestial Halo as 11-10 favourite to beat his Champion Hurdle conqueror Punjabi in Saturday’s Boylesports.com International Hurdle.

Zaynar attempts to extend his unbeaten hurdles career to five in the Unicoin Homes Relkeel Hurdle. Zaynar, the Triumph Hurdle winner, was one of eight entries in the reopened Relkeel Hurdle, but it is unlikely he will face a rematch with Karabak, whom he beat six lengths at Ascot last time.

The big handicap of the weekend is Saturdays Boylesports.com Gold Cup. Having a decent horse in your stable can bring many rewards but, as champion trainer Paul Nicholls will freely testify, it should come with a health warning.

Tim Vaughan, looking to move up to the next rung on the trainers’ ladder, says he has had some sleepless nights for the last two weeks as he prepares Atouchbetweenacara for the biggest race of his and the horse’s career. Of all his 75 boarders, it is the former Venetia Williams-trained eight-year-old, who, along with owner Paul Beck’s Stan and Flintoff, arrived unexpectedly at his Cowbridge stables in Glamorgan in early September, who is piling on the pressure.

Gwanako for Nicholls

Gwanako for Nicholls

At the five day declarations for this weeks Boylesports.com Gold Cup there is a surprise defection from the line up in Tranquil Sea, winner of the Paddy Power Gold Cup in November. The handicap is now headed by Gwanako (16/1 with Boylesports), one of three confirmations for champion trainer Paul Nicholls, and yesterday’s Warwick scorer Our Vic (20/1), who is among three possible starters from the David Pipe yard.

Nicholls could also run Poquelin (6/1), and Chapoturgeon (8/1), who was successful at last season’s Festival in the Listed Jewson Novices’ Handicap Chase but fell on his reappearance in the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham on November 14.

It promises to be a fantastic weekend of racing. Racing Diary will have all the news, views and tips.

What a brilliant day this is. The Betfair Chase is the best race of the day and for me Kauto Star is the bet of the season so far. In addition to Haydock Ascot stages an excellent jumps card with the Ascot Hurdle providing a very interesting and high class contest.

The rain will play its part, the heavens have opened, which certainly makes up for the very mild spell we enjoyed in October. Very sad to see the flooding, particularly in Cumbria and my thoughts are with all those affected. The emergency services just make you proud to be British, what a terrible thing to happen to people’s homes and businesses. God bless you all. Racing should survive the weather, certainly at Ascot and Haydock on Saturday.

14:55 Haydock, Kauto Star- Win. The Betfair Chase is a race that Kauto Star has won twice and famously unseated Sam Thomas last year. Paul Nicholls has targeted Haydock once again for his dual Gold Cup winning superstar to make his seasonal reappearance. Master Minded was beaten last week on his return but Nicholls did say he had left plenty to work on. In the case of Kauto Star he has been quite bullish. In a recent interview Nicholls told the press;

Kauto Star worked very well on Wednesday morning ahead of his Haydock engagement in the Betfair Chase on Saturday and we are all looking forward to his reappearance. He worked with Big Buck’s, who is also in great form and heads to Newbury next week for the Long Distance Hurdle.”

The ground has given rise to doubts about Kauto Star and as a result he has drifted to a very attractive price. Timeform have said that his form in France and in the UK suggests that he will handle the heavy going. Looking at the opposition Kauto Star is way ahead and should win, even if slightly below his best. Racing should go ahead at Haydock and for me Kauto Star at the 5/4 with the Sponsors is the best bet of the jumps season so far.

Unbeaten Zaynar reappears at Ascot

Unbeaten Zaynar reappears at Ascot

14:35 Ascot, Zaynar- Win. Triumph Hurdle winner, Zaynar, makes his season reappearance at Ascot in the Ascot Hurdle. Unbeaten over hurdles Andrew Tinkler will partner the grey with the stable jockey Barry Geraghty banned and Tony McCoy claimed by owner JP McManus for Karabak.  Zaynar looked a lazy type at times last season but he has an engine and a turn of foot. The step up in trip should actually be a positive and I think Zaynar will be a Champion Hurdle contender this season. Aintree festival scorer Time For Rupert lines up for trainer Paul Webber, who I think is the main danger.
