The Hitman marks your card for Friday’s action, where there is no doubt that the best is over the pond at Churchill Downs as the Breeders Cup gets underway.

The best bet of the day is without a doubt the wonderful Midday (22:50) who bids for back to back success in the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Churchill Downs. What a wonderful mare she is and is probably now at her peak, which is reflected in her form figures. Backers will not get much of a price, certainly not with the British bookmakers but there looks to be little in the way of serious competition and Henry Cecil can raise the flag at Warren Place again tonight. Midday is the absolute banker bet of 2010 in my view tonight.

In the UK the contrast in quality really could not be greater with flat cards at Southwell and Wolverhampton. The main interest in has to be said is the dingdong battle between Hanagan and Hughes for the jockeys championship. Both would be deserving winners, for different reasons, and in truth I don’t mind who wins.

Latest betting;

2/7 Paul Hanagan
5/2 Richard Hughes

Speaking of Paul Hanagan, she has a very strong chance aboard Diggerat (2:30 Southwell) of overturning the odds-on favourite. This could seal the title for the jockey so we know we will get the kitchen sink thrown at this one today. He is also very well weighted in this claimer and having been competing with credit in handicap company I think there is some value to be had here. Exchange players may want to take a chance and lay Lucky Punt here.

Midday can repeat Breeders Cup Victory tonight

The best bet of the day at Southwell Encore Une Anne (1:30) who has found an ideal opportunity to break her maiden. She is bred to run at much better places than the Nottinghamshire venue where she runs today but her form is pretty strong and the shapes up really to match with the Godolphin horse and I think connections would be very disappointed were they not to win here. There is always the danger that she doesn’t handle the kickback but Newmarket horses have plenty of opportunity to run on the surface at home so I am not too concerned. Not much of a price it has to be said but this does look very solid bet.

Well the flat season is here and we have had a pretty good start, certainly from a Viking Racing Point of view with a great 6/1 winner following up Saturday’s Penitent demolition of the Lincoln field.

There is no turf flat racing today with the action on the all-weather at Lingfield and Wolverhampton. There is a jumps meeting at Towcester, which looks a nightmare, to say the least.

Remember our professional tipping service, Viking Racing are offering a free trial of the service. The weekend saw big 4/1 and 6/1 winners! Simply dial 0844 811 2811 for your free trial.

There is not much to get excited about on Monday. Here are your free horseracing tips from Racing Diary for Monday;

2:10 Lingfield, Abondanza- Win. At the weekend Frankie Dettori was riding in the World’s richest race, this is a total contrast, a lowly seller at Lingfield. Abondanza is rated 106 and should win this as easy as you like, but unless the price is right I wouldn’t get involved! THis should be an easy winner, but I can’t back it at that price!

All Weather action from Lingfield

3:40 Lingfield, Progress- Win. This is my bet of the day. I believe that 71 is a fair mark and with natural progression (pardon the pun) this Jeremy Noseda inmate will win on her handicap debut. The Noseda stable will have a decent season in my view and with William Buick in the saddle today I think all the appropriate boxes are ticked.

Thats it have a great day!

Well I am back home and have managed to recover from a hectic week at Cheltenham. I was covering the event for Suntalk Radion, with Jon Gaunt. We had some cracking guests on the show and I really did get to meet some big names in racing as well as some very interesting people.

The guests we had on the show is a long list. I am so pleased I did it and hope to do it again soon! I like radio and I am told I have a face for it!

So its back to normality and it certainly is down to earth with a huge bump today withlow key meetings at Kelso, Plumpton and Wolverhampton. Here are todays free horseracing tips;

2:10 Kelso, Dr Livingstone, Win. Last time out he was thrown in at the deep end and sank, so back in the shallow end here Dr Livingstone can make the trip to the borders track worth it by winning. This represents a drop in class for Charlie Egerton’s five year-old and I fully expect him to win and get us off to a good start.

4:30 Plumpton, Willandrich, Win. So good they named him twice? Willandrich looks for a hat-trick here after an easy win last week at Warwick. Despite the seven pounds penalty I think he can win again with conditions once again in his favour. The young jockey has been on board for his last three runs of which two have been winners. Ian Williams is having anaother good season and Willandrich can add another to his tally.

Carlisle and Market Rasen Off, Lingfield and Wolverhampton On

Carlisle and Market Rasen are off but all weather racing at Lingfield and Wolverhampton is on. Get your free horseracing tips for Monday.

Carlisle is Off

Monday afternoon’s National Hunt meeting at Carlisle has become the latest casualty of the current cold spell. Officials at the Cumbrian venue called an inspection for 8am but after another night of sub-zero temperatures the decision was made early. Clerk of the course Andrew Tulloch said:

“We got down to -4C which was a good deal colder than what we were forecast. It was still frozen in places yesterday and while it was coming out slowly, those sort of temperatures brought us right back to square one. We had additional fleeces down but the parts that weren’t covered would take a great deal of work to get us raceable and we don’t have the time.”

Wolverhampton is On

Monday afternoon’s all-weather meeting at Wolverhampton will go ahead after an 8am precautionary inspection was brought forward. Officials had been worried about the prospect of of overnight snow in the Dunstall Park area but that nothing arrived.

“The snow that we were forecast failed to materialise,” said clerk of the course Fergus Cameron. It did drop to -4C overnight but the temperatures are already on the rise and it is due to get to +4C. It’s all systems go, some good news for a change.”

Market Rasen also Off

Monday’s National Hunt fixture at Market Rasen has been abandoned due to frost and snow. Although a slight thaw late on Sunday morning offered a degree of optimism, the situation was considered untenable following a mid-afternoon inspection. Clerk of the course Sulekha Varma reported: “It stopped snowing at around 11.30am and it began to start thawing.

“We thought we might get away with it, but the course is still frozen so we’ve had to abandon.”

There are no problems at Lingfield.

UK horse racing on Monday shapes as a strong day of betting with action coming in from Wolverhampton, Catterick and Plumpton (subject to an 8am inspection at Plumpton). Below we highlight 6 of the races on the flat AW card for racing at Wolverhampton. Good value exists in plenty of the races.

Wolverhampton 2.10 R1 No7 Straboe (1) – lightly raced improver and well bred type by Green Desert out of the Arch mare Staff Nurse, comes into this having 7th career start on the back of breaking maiden status 2 starts ago at Yarmouth over 6f by 2l, made all that day and stayed on strongly at the business end getting the 6f strongly, form refs through the btn brigade put it well up to winning vs this lot it faces today, last start also looked the winner over 6f at Kempton towards the end of December when it ambled up to hit the front 2f out travelling on the bit but found nothing when put under pressure to finish 5th btn 2.5l, it was 1st up off a 4.5 month break that day and may have given way to fitness, drops back to 5f here and fitter now and every chance of recapturing the form it showed winning 2 starts ago, if so it shapes as hard to hold out here.

Wolverhampton 2.10 R1 No1 Across The Sands (1) – overly well bred type by hot young sire Oasis Dream out of the Don’t Forget Me mare Dam Well Beyond who is also the dam of 6 winners from 7 others to race including 2 stakes performers Out Of Reach and Well Warned, has been off the scene since moderate form late in December but gets blinkers 1st time here and is freshened leading into this, go on effort at 2nd career start when 3rd btn 3l by Master Lightfoot over 5f at Lingfield, form refs out of that race read well for what it takes on here, minor query having to lump topweight but has the scope for further improvement and at 20/1+ early on exchanges warrants specking.

Wolverhampton 3.10 R3 No9 Spinning Well (2) – lightly raced improver 2nd up from a spell here on the back of finishing a well btn 4th at Lingfield over 10f last start, fitter now 2nd up and likely to improve for that last start effort, prefer to go on previous form in Ireland including 3 back at the Curragh when 2nd btn a head by Final Approach over 8f on soft going, form refs out of that race put it well above the level required to win here, some will query its ability to get a strong 12f but it is well bred with stamina injected through the dam’s side of the pedigree by Pivotal out of the Sadler’s Wells mare Kiltubber, gets in well weighted vs these foes carrying the minimum 8st12lbs, both jockey and trainer in good form presently with yard turning out 2 winners from 5 starters this month and this one looks likely to be a 3rd for this hot yard.

Wolverhampton 3.40 R4 No1 Bubbly Braveheart (4) – a field of only 4 runners greets us here and this well bred type by Cape Cross out of the Bering mare Infinity looks super hard to hold out on the back of its last start victory at Lingfield over 10f, only scored by 1l on the line last start but was held up at critical stage and quickly put paid to them when asked to assert authority over the final 100y, always looked the winner, also put good margins back through the field and overall depth of the foes it beat that day was clearly superior to what it faces here, only rises 3lb in weight off that win and realistically has been gifted this by the handicapper, drops back 100y off that last start win but its superior turn of foot and hot current form should see it win this by a wide margin.

Wolverhampton 4.10 R5 No2 Johnmanderville (1) – in prepost markets this one was marked up 16/1 2nd outsider in the field but that assessment is way over its true chances, decently bred type by Kheleyf out of the Charnwood Forest mare Lady’s Walk and comes into this 1st up off a 4 month break on the back of last start finishing 1.7l 2nd to Gaily Noble on this track over this distance, that was a weaker race in terms of advertised class than it faces here but the overall depth of this field is not great and this ones form on turf last season is well above the level required to win here, the yard is in good form on the AW and sent out Ingleby Star to win here last Monday as a 10/1 chance from only 2 runners, the big query is the apprentice hoop engaged to ride Shirley Teasdale and this is her first ride in 2010 and she didn’t ride a winner from 7 rides in 2009, so she is the big unknown but her weight relief does get Johnmanderville in well weighted here vs the major danger Hannicean, those 2 should fight the race out but the value option is Johnmanderville and that is the way we will play this race.

Wolverhampton 4.40 R6 No4 Pastello (2) – deceivingly well bred type by Exceed And Excel out of the 3 times stakes placed Lion Cavern mare Pastel, 1st up here off the back of a 2 1/2 month break for the astute Richard Hannon yard and gets in very well weighted after the 7lb claim for Charles Eddery, unplaced both starts on the AW at the end of last season but looks to have been at the end of its preperation, form prior on the turf at Leicester, Brighton and Newmarket when only btn 2l by the likes of Bab At The Bowser and Quiet reads very well for a race of this nature, if it is ready for this 1st up tilt then it will shake the life out of this race, has been backed early on the exchanges from 6.00 into 5.00 which is a good sign, any further money adds confidence that it is ready for this 1st up tilt.

Wolverhampton 5.10 R7 No2 Herbert Crescent (2) – decently bred type by Averti out of the Zafonic mare With Distinction who is also the dam of one other runner to race being the Listed winner Talking Hands (also 2l 4th in G3 company), comes into this 1st up from a 2 month spell after failing last 2 starts, 3 runs prior to that when 2nd each time on this track over 7f and 9f suggest it is well up to the level required to win here, trainer and jockey both hot on the AW in 2010, jockey has ridden 12 winners from 42 rides in 2010 (7 winners last 17 rides), 29% strike rate in 2010, trainer has saddled 3 winners from 15 runners, 20% strike rate with 3 other runners finishing 2nd, very good value in early betting on the exchanges at 9.40, one of the better value bets on the Wolverhampton card.

It has been a terrible week both in terms of weather and results. It has been dire stuff in truth but the performance of some of the horses I have put up have been mind blowingly poor.

I much prefer goood quality racing and this Saturday looks like it could be a very high quality day. Lets face it nothing can be as bad as this week.

Chepstow has already gone and Catterick will hold a morning inspection ahead of their jumps meeting. Bangor should be fine along with all-weather cards at Lingfield and Wolverhampton.

It is a struggle today and small stakes are advised. I really like the look ofone at Catterick, so fingers crossed. Here are two bets for Friday, weather permitting;

2:45 Catterick, The Snail- Win. Last time out The Snail trotted up. Despite a penalty Evan Williams’ horse can win his sixth race in a row. He was a ready winner at Musselburgh over hurdles and I think there is plenty left in the tank. Whats Up Woody would be the one to worry about with Howard Johnson in such good form. I think though this one had a very hard race at Hexham and only just got home. For me The Snail has plenty in hand and worth backing again.

All Weather action at Wolverhampton

5:05 Woverhampton, Grey Command- Win. Mel Brittain is another trainer in fine form ahead of next month’s turf season kick off. Grey Command is also a horse in form and arrives here looking for a hat-trick following last week’s course and distance win where he stayed on well to win comfortably. This is a relatively straightforward task, hopefully!

Not a great day on Monday with only one meeting at Wolverhampton. I am hoping that the weather eases up to enable jumps racing to take place.

There is an inspection at Folkstone and Taunton are hoping for warmer temperatures. The weekend looks to be shaping well with Punchestowns, Binocular and Zaynar all set for an appearance.

There is nothing more frustrating than doing the cards only for them to be called off, but there is nothing we can do about that, here are my bets for Tuesday, weather permitting.

3:40 Taunton, Velentine Vic- Win. One I really like is Valentine Vic from the Champion Trainer’s stable of Paul Nicholls with Ruby Walsh taking the ride. The form looks very solid with a decent course and distance win last time, winning by six lenths in impressive style. Despite a penalty for that in this novice company I would expect a repeat performance with the same result.

McCoy rides for Nicky Henderson

1:50 Folkstone, Strategic Gale- Win. Tony McCoy teams up with Nicky Henderson again, a combination well worth following. Strategic Gale went very close at Huntingdon last time, going down a short head in a bumper. Now over hurdles for the first time with Tony McCoy aboard I would expect the pair not be found wanting in the finish.

Carl Harris’ Best Bets for Tuesday 2 February

  • 3:40 Taunton, Velentine Vic- Win.
  • 1:50 Folkstone, Strategic Gale- Win.

Well what can I say. Kempton and Ludlow frozen off leaving only Wolverhampton on the all-weather, not a great card by any standard. January was a weather disaster, February could head that way if today is any indication.

I will get stuck in to Cheltenham today and post my thoughts as we count down to the festival.I am not keen on anything today, save one in the last which is my only bet of the day;

5:50 Wolverhampton- Starburst, Win. I like this filly, in the context of the race anyway! She has gone up 6lbs for scoring over course and distance in a maiden in December. Although she was beaten from this mark last time this is a race that she can win and should be run to suit. I will take a chance on her but at small stakes.

One Bet for Monday 1st February:

  • 5:50 Wolverhampton- Starburst, Win.
