Takeover Target…Farewell Old Friend…

The career of globetrotting sprinter Takeover Target is over after he fractured a cannon bone in the July Cup at Newmarket.

Retired- Takeover Target

Retired- Takeover Target

The 10-year-old appeared to run his usual solid race in seventh behind Fleeting Spirit but a problem emerged afterwards.

In the immediate aftermath trainer Joe Janiak and Takeover Target’s jockey Jay Ford were too upset to talk but Janiak told the Racing Post on Saturday morning: “Thankfully, it’s all good news. Takeover Target cracked a cannon bone but he’s had five screws inserted and will be box rested at the hospital for a couple of months.

“He seems fine after the operation and he needs to rest. He has been a fantastic horse and we have had some great adventures with him.”

Janiak famously bought the sprinter for $1,250 in 2003 while he was still a taxi driver. He won eight races at the highest level and was a regular visitor to Royal Ascot, but had to miss the meeting this year after a small setback. Takeover Target retires with 21 career wins and earnings of more than $6 million.

How Good is Canford Cliffs…A Guineas Winner?

Should we back Canford Cliffs for the 2010 2000 Guineas…

Lets kick off by watching Canford Cliffs win the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot (Youtube).

Wow, he bolted up didn’t he. Richard Hughes said after the win (in the Daily Telegraph)…

“The first day I sat on him I knew he was special. I gave him a half-speed one morning and I have never ridden anything like it in my life. He went off 10 lengths in front and the other two lads I was working with got a bollocking for not laying up! He’s a freak.”

Canford Cliffs could run in the Prix Morny at Deauville on August 23. So says trainer Richard Hannon, whose colt made it two from two when hugely impressive in the Coventry Stakes last week under Richard Hughes. Official handicappers believe that his rating of 118 is the best achieved by a two-year-old in ten years.

Hannon told the Racing Post regarding plans: “Canford Cliffs would have a three-pound penalty for the July Stakes. He is not entered in the Phoenix Stakes, and it would cost €25,000 to supplement him for the Curragh, so the Deauville race, which has not yet closed, looks the favoured option. I know it is two months away, but the break will do him good and Paul Roy, who bought a half-share in the colt the night before the Coventry, won the Morny with Dutch Art three years ago. We want to look after Canford Cliffs this season as he is a rangy colt with size and scope about him, and I am not surprised that the bookies have him favourite for next year’s 2,000 Guineas.
He has so much speed that inevitably there will be those who will question his ability to get the mile, but he will learn to settle better as he matures through the summer, and neither Hughesie nor I have any doubts about him staying the longer distance.”

A 2000 Guineas Winner, Canford Cliffs?

A 2000 Guineas Winner, Canford Cliffs?

So should we back him for the 2000 Guineas? At this stage no, many good 2 year olds never make the grade and it was a similar story last season with Art Connoisseur who is good, but not a 2000 Guineas winner.

I hope Canford Cliffs fulfills the promise shown but at this stage lets wait and see!

High Standing Favourite for Saturday’s Stewards Cup…

High Standing..an oustanding bet!

High Standing..an oustanding bet!

Goodwood on Saturday 1st August…Wokingham Winner tops Stan James’ List.

William Haggas, trainer of High Standing, last year saddled the first two home in the heritage handicap and High Standing has justified his position at the head of the betting after winning the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot earlier in the month.

Next in the market at 10-1 is the unexposed three-year-old filly Bouvardia and Wokingham fourth Markab.

Quite simply you must back High Standing who could win this in good style!

SEA THE STARS is the evens favourite with Stan James at the 48 hour declaration stage for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh on Sunday despite not being a definite starter in the Group 1.  The ground on the straight course has been changed from good to good to yielding, while the round track is now good from good to firm. Friday..Good Thing at Musselburgh..

Baizically It Is A Special At Musselburgh In The 2.55 says Nathan Lynch

After scratchings only 4 horses greet the starter in the 2.55 from Musselburgh and one stands out as clearly a superior staying prospect to the rest over the 12f100y test.

Top weight Baizically comes into this on the back of winning two on end including against similar 2 back by 4l over 13f on good to firm going at Hamilton, last start it franked that form winning again for a bigger purse over 14f on this track. Both starts suggest he is well above the level required to win here and he is bred for this trip being by Gallileo. He will be on pace and the pace scenario should prove a bonus which is likely to be slow. It simply keeps on ticking every box we look at. Class will prevail in this facile 4 horse staying contest.

Confederation Cup Egypt Vs Italy

We take Italy to win the game against Egypt this afternoon

We take Italy to win the game against Egypt this afternoon

Italy seem to have come to South Africa to win the Confederation Cup and look like the team to go through to face Spain in the final and Egypt are unlikely to pose a major threat today. Despite Egypt scoring three against Brazil, the Italian defence pose a much more solid barrier for Egypt and we take Italy to win this by a single goal 0-1.

Cannavaro should return to the middle of the defence for Italy and surely Giuseppe Rossi must start today, whilst Egypt’s Al Muhamadi serves a one match ban and Ahmed Eid impressed as a substitute in the last game and should be worth a place.

Italy at 1.77 on Betfair is great value for a team that have come here to win and play a team that are struggling to get back to their African Cup of Nations form and we will be taking these odds as well as the 8.0 for Italy to win 0-1.

We will wait for the line-ups before taking a player to score, but Giuseppe Rossi looks value at the 2.54 available on Betfair.

Confederation Cup South Africa Vs New Zealand

Can the All Whites score against South Africa, we suspect not

Can the All Whites score against South Africa, we suspect not

Confederation Cup, South Africa Vs New Zealand is live on BBC3 at 7-30pm

South Africa looked bereft of imagination in their opening game and New Zealand looked out of their depth against Spain. We are therefore looking at a game today that is unlikely to inspire and thrill and the only bet I can heavily recommend is to trade the 0-0 at 16.5 on Betfair!

This is the game that may indicate whether Iraq or South Africa will qualify alongside Spain in Group A of the Confederation Cup and as we suggested earlier, Iraq were always the value bet.  I am also disappointed that the TV schedules did not allow for the Spain game to appear as the 7-30 evening game, FIFA missed a trick there!

New Zealand are only 10 placings behind South Africa in the FIFA rankings but on the points system they are 40 points behind, so it would seem natural to take South Africa to win with home advantage. But South Africa have won only 2 from their last 12 and New Zealand have only had to beat teams like Fiji, North Caledonia and Vanuatu to become Champions of Oceania and I prefer to back the draw (at 5.8 on Betfair) and trade in play just in case one of these teams spots that the object of the game is to score a goal. Much will depend on whether Pienaar starts for South Africa.

Anybody interested in trading is welcome to check out our trading page at the top of the page.

Prediction :- A no-score bore that is probably only marginally more interesting than Coronation Street which starts at the same time!

Evas Request can Follow-up at Pontefract…

Eva's Request Wins at Epsom on Saturday

Evas Request Wins at Epsom on Saturday

Pretty poor stuff this afternoon. Its grass cutting and shopping for me, but it gets better this evening with Windsor and Pontefract. Two pretty decent cards it has to be said. We will focus purely on the evening racing.

At Pontefract…

The best race of the day is at Pontefract at 8.20. The Listed fillies Pipalong Stakes has attracted a field of 9 and Evas Request looks the best bet of the day. She ran and won well at Epsom on Saturday, this looks like an easier race for her assuming she has come out of the race fine. If she lines up then Mick Channon will think she is fine, which is good enough for me. Eva’s request is a good horse in a good race and is the best bet of the day. Back Evas Request to win the 8.20 at Pontefract.

Evas Request is looking pretty short. I took 1.93 when the market opened on Betfair, not for much though. I think Eva’s request is still value at 1.7.

At Windsor…

At Windsor I will be backing Heroes (7.30) who is looking to follow-up his Brighton Handicap win where he ran out a good winner. He is up only 2 pounds for that and should run well again. Surprisingly Heroes is a pretty decent price, I have taken 5/1 this morning and at that price he becomes an each-way bet. Tim Vaughan has his string in good order and showed he has heroes spot on last time. Vaughan  has shown he can get a string of wins from horses he gets from others, notably Little Shilling over the jumps. The advice is to back Heroes Each Way in the 7.30 at Windsor.

There is not much else to get excited about today. The cricket 2020 cup continues and we will look at who could win the first ever world cup. The Super 8 phase is where it gets serious!
