The Battle For the Ashes, Can England Retain The #Ashes?

Andrew Strauss has spent the past few weeks coolly ignoring Australian insults designed to unnerve England before they embark on their flight to Perth on Friday. Can England win the Ashes down-under?

The Ashes 2010: Andrew Strauss puts England team on a 'war' footing

Despite the time differences William Hill are predicting a massive £15 million will be gambled industry wide on the Ashes 2010/11. Hills are planning on having thirty plus in play markets throughout the tests, compared to eight last time round. Australia are the slight favourites at 8/11 with England offered at 2/1. Despite his woeful form, Kevin Pietersen is 1/20 to start the first test and 4/1 to be the first England player to score a hundred.

“If the Ashes was being played at home, England would be strong favourites and we fully expect a patriotic punt on Strauss’s men in the coming weeks,” said Hill’s spokesman Rupert Adams.

Could England Win The Ashes?

William Hill Have trimmed the price of England winning the Ashes from 9/4 to 2/1 after punters reacted to the the Australian loss in India. Despite Ricky Ponting‘s belief that Kevin Pietersen will be a weak link, Hills offer 7/2 that KP will be top England run scorer and offer 4/1 that he scores England’s first century.

“We have seen money for England all week but there was a spike this morning and we now feel that England really do have a great chance this winter,” said Hill’s spokesman Rupert Adams.

Eoin Morgan, Ashes Bound?

England have dangled an Ashes plane ticket in front of Eoin Morgan and asked him to grab it.

Ian Bell’s foot injury opened the door for Morgan to keep his place for the First Test against Pakistan ahead of Ravi Bopara, and the England selectors plumped for the Irishman. With Paul Collingwood returning to the top six after his Test rest, Bopara’s Ashes chances have taken a dip as only seven batsmen are likely to go to Australia.

The Betting
Following yet another fantastic batting performance from boy-wonder Eoin Morgan today, William Hills have cut the price of him getting into the first Ashes team from 2/1 to Even money. Hills make him 2/1 to score 200 in this first innings. Morgan’s batting partner Paul Collingwood is 17/20 to get over 115.5 runs, also 17/20 that he does not. England are now 2/5 to win the first test now, with Pakistan 9/1 and the draw 5/2. England are 17/20 to score more than 500 runs in this first innings.

“Once again, the bookies have underestimated Morgan’s prowess with the bat and he certainly seems to have bamboozled us by bowling us a googly,” said Hill’s spokesman Joe Crilly.

William Hill Odds:

1st Test Outright: 2/5 England; 9/1 Pakistan; 5/2 Draw
Morgan To Get In The First Ashes Squad: 8/11 No; Evs Yes
Morgan To Get 200: 2/1
Collingwood 1st Innings Runs: 17/20 Over 115.5; 17/20 Under 115.5
Total England 1st Innings Runs: 17/20 Over 500.5; 17/20 Under 500.5

England’s morning collapse to 102 all out has turned the Ashes betting on its head with Australia now 6/4 favourites to win the famous urn. Ricky Ponting’s team had been 5/1 outsiders to win the Series before start of play today with England’s odds drifting from 8/11 to 5/2. A drawn series is now 11/8.

The collapse put England at 9/1 to win the game with the Aussies firmly in control at 1/9 to level the series.

BOOKIE BETS ON NEXT ASHES WARM UP INJURY

Glenn McGrath, Brad Haddin, Matt Prior – all suffered pre-match injuries ahead of crucial Ashes Test matches. And with the cricketers of both countries mistakenly fancying themselves as footballers bookie Paddy Power is now betting on which player will next injure himself in a pre-match Ashes warm-up.

Not surprisingly, the injury plagued Andrew Flintoff and Brett Lee lead the way at 3/1 and 5/1 respectively, with England wicket keeper Matt Prior – who suffered a last minute back spasm and nearly missed today’s match – following at 8/1.

Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “The pre-match football games and warm-ups are taking their toll and it probably won’t be long before another player comes a cropper . Shane Warne always maintained the modern day obsession with warm-ups were a waste of time – it’s starting to look like the spin legend had a point.

The Professor’s Friday Betting Tips, 7th August

Well on Friday, I seemed to have upset a few people with my advice about how I bet. Tough! I bet as I do and I do very well. What I am giving here is advice, its free advice but there is an old saying about advice

Wise men don’t need advice, Fools won’t take it.

Benjaman Franklin

Still, five days in the job and already I am getting hate mail! Usually takes a bit more time.My boss had a word with me and I had two back!

Anyway, seriously let’s move on to Friday which is another busy one. On top of that we have The Ashes. Let’s hope we give the Aussies a Yorkshire welcome. I mean that in the proper way, as in we show them the courtesy and respect they deserve, none. They dish it out over there, so lets keep it friendly and get behind our lads. As a Barmy Army member I will be at Leeds to support England, and have a few beers. Its not nasty, its part of the game and having been down under following England I think the Aussies have a cheek moaning about a bit of banter. It’s ferocious over there! I actually love Australia and Australian’s and its all in good fun.

Racing wise I am looking forward to the day, I am backing one big, and am advising my first two point bet. I see Carl Harris has put this one up as his best bet, so you get a bit of duplication here.

7.05 Musselburgh, Singeur, 2 points Win

This is a conditions race where this three time winner is well weighted. Clever move by Robin Bastiman. I would be happier with Callan on but he is elsewhere. I rate this as the best horse in the race and at the adjusted weights I think this is an excellent bet. Singeur has improved every time he has run. He won’t need to improve to win this, in my view. I will be having a really good bet and advice a double stakes win on Singeur.

After having a really good luck I have decided to stick with just one, 2 point bet today!

The Ashes, 4th Test Preview at Headingley

The Ashes: England v Australia, fourth Test
Aug 7-Aug 11 2009, Headingley, Leeds
TV: Sky Sports 1, Sky Sports HD1
Radio: BBC Radio Five Live Sports Extra, BBC Radio Four (Long Wave)
Web News and Scores- Racing Diary

England’s greatest Ashes win came here at Headingley in 1981. Now England head to Leeds 1-0 up with two to play. This is a huge game. We look at the latest news and also an excellent preview of the match by The Daily Telegraph.

Team News…

Brett Lee is back for Australia, He speaks to Aussie TV;

Likely teams
England: Strauss (capt), Cook, Bopara, Bell, Collingwood, Prior (wkt), Flintoff, Sidebottom, Swann, Anderson, Onions.
Australia: Watson, Katich, Ponting (capt), Hussey, Clarke, North, Haddin (wkt), Johnson, Lee, Hauritz, Hilfenhaus.
Umpires: Billy Bowden (NZ), Asad Rauf (Pak)

Pitch Report

Unlike so many English grounds, Headingley has retained much of its traditional character. It is still a result wicket, and if overhead conditions are right, then batting will be tricky against the moving ball. When the sun comes out, it is a quick scoring ground. The spinners won’t find much to get excited about.

Weather Forecast

Friday: Light showers.
Saturday: Sunny intervals.
Sunday: Sunny intervals.

The Match…

England’s chastening attempt to bowl out Australia on the fifth day at Edgbaston has left them with plenty to ponder ahead of Headingley. Andrew Flintoff bowled like a bloke with one good knee, and England have a big call to make on his participation. With the Ashes on the line, Flintoff is unlikely to ask for a breather, but captain Andrew Strauss and coach Andy Flower must decide whether a half-fit Flintoff is more valuable than a fully-fit Ryan Sidebottom.

Steve Harmison could also come into the equation if Flintoff misses out. If England pick six batters, then Jonathan Trott will make his Test debut, with Stuart Broad likely to miss out for either Sidebottom or Harmison. Australia hope to recall Brett Lee and Brad Haddin after injury worries. If Lee is not risked, Stuart Clark will likely come into the side for Peter Siddle.

Quotes…

Shane Watson:

“So the intensity is really starting to rise up. I really enjoyed it. It’s great cricket. It’s great to have some really competitive banter out there. Everyone’s going hammer and tongs to give yourself the best chance of winning. I love it.”

Graeme Onions:

“Andrew Flintoff is key for England. He’s an important player if he’s fully fit, but I think that’s a massive thing to say. With Jonathan Trott and Ryan Sidebottom in the squad, deep down we’re pretty confident that if he’s not fit, we’ve got a good enough team to win.”

Stewart Regan (Yorkshire chief executive):

“There are a small minority who like to take their behaviour one step too far and the club have said we will not tolerate behaviour which gets out of hand. “Obviously we can’t stop people booing the opposition, to even suggest that is ludicrous, but what we can do is stop fans getting close to the players.”

Betting Preview…

This is a huge match.  I refer to an excellent read on betting@Betfair who say that England do not do so well at Headingley;

The ink on the scorers’ sheets for the third Test was barely dry before the hype and misrepresentation fuelled by 1981 and all that began. Sir Ian Botham, unsurprisingly, demanded Sky viewers believe that Headingley is a venue for extraordinary England efforts. Botham was right. Once. Inspired by his belligerence England produced a remarkable comeback victory over Australia 28 years ago. Since then, those who were there, watched it on television or read about it look at Headingley through sepia-tinted spectacles, especially when Australia are in town.

They are there again this week for Friday’s start of the fourth Ashes Test. And nostalgia-induced tears, not to mention a win that returns the urn, already threaten to obscure the cold, hard fact that Headingley – brace yourself Three Lions fans – is the second least successful home venue for England.

With a win-loss ratio of just 1.42 at Leeds, England have only an inferior record at Trent Bridge where the ratio is 1.06. It is a surprising statistic because Headingley is supposed to play into the hands of England’s strength – swing bowling. Odds of 4.30 about an England win suddenly look justified with Australia 2.80 and the draw 2.44.

Racing Diary Says;

Australia and England looks tightly matched. If the weather holds, I can’t see the fourth Ashes Test match at Headingley ending in a draw – and that makes it very exciting.

An England win would regain the Ashes, and take all the pressure off the fifth Test at The Oval. On the other hand, an Australia victory would square the series and leave them needing only a draw to retain the precious urn.

England have new blood in Trott and with the crowd behind them England can win here, if they get a good start. Marcus Trescothic says “It’s hard work for any batsman when deliveries move around in the air, but the Aussies find it particularly difficult because they don’t encounter the same problems back home.” Swinging is the key for England and Anderson and Onions bowled well at Edgbaston and Cardiff.

Flintoff needs to be fit, if he is then Back England to Win!
