Zaidpour Supported Ahead of Supreme Novices’ Hurdle

Zaidpour has been well-supported for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle this afternoon which suggests that Willie Mullins’ gelding could be heading for the first race at Cheltenham Festival rather than take up other engagements at the Festival.

The five-year-old is now 8/1 (from 10/1) with totesport for the two-mile event which puts him fourth in the market behind the 9/4 favourite Cue Card.

‘Zaidpour has always been highly regarded by the Mullins stable and recent support suggests he will be heading for the Supreme Novices’ rather than the Neptune,’ said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

There has also been money for Great Endeavour in the Stewart Family Spinal Research Handicap Chase on the first day and last year’s Byrne Group Plate winner is now 8/1 (from 10/1) with totesport.

Cue Card cruises into 3/1 for Supreme Novices’

Cue Card didn’t fluff his lines this afternoon as he maintained his unbeaten record in style landing the Cheltenham Collection Sharp Novices’ Hurdle, prompting totesport to cut him into 3/1 favourite (from 6/1) for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

Picture

Cue Card was a most impressive winner of the Cheltenham Collection Sharp Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham on Friday afternoon. Joe Tizzard’s mount was keen-enough through the early stages at Prestbury Park, but was always cantering over his rivals – including Dunraven Storm. His market rival still held a narrow advantange turning in but the 8-13 favourite swept past going to the last to score well.

The four-year-old oozed class from start to finish, jumping accurately throughout and had his rivals cooked by the home turn, eventually coming clear to score by eight lengths from Dunraven Storm. In his post-race comments, Colin Tizzard stated his charge will stick to two miles, but in case they have a change of heart, totesport trimmed Cue Card into 9/2 favourite (from 6/1) for the Neptune Investment Management Hurdle.

‘Cue Card produced an unforgettable exhibition of hurdling today and this combined with his tremendous flat speed means he has all the ingredients to make up into a real superstar ’ said totesport spokesman Andrew Griffiths.

In the last race on the card, 159-rated hurdler Time For Rupert capitalised on a final fence mistake by Mr Thriller to take the Steel Plate And Sections Novices’ Chase. His victory means he is now 8/1 joint-favourite (from 12/1) for the RSA Chase.

1:30 Cheltenham, The Supreme Novice’s Hurdle

The Irish have been backing super horse Dunguib here since he won the Champion bumper at the Cheltenham Festival last year. He didn’t just win last year he destroyed them and has remained unbeaten ever since. His last run at Leopardstown hardly troubled Dunguib but there have been questions asked about his jumping.  Below is Dunguib‘s last run;

Dunguib is clearly a high class horse and is certainly the Irish Banker of the meeting but at odds on he represents little in the way of value, now. Indeed if he gets beaten then many Irish punters will be in trouble. So can Dunguib be beaten?

Firstly let me take you back to 2008 when Binocular appeared here at a similar price to Dunguib, having been unbeaten for Nicky Henderson. It was Captain Cee Bee who beat him that day as he didn’t get up the Cheltenham hill. We know that Dunguib does get up the Cheltenham Hill. Watch again his Champion Bumper win last year, below;

So we need to look at the opposition. In my view there is only one horse to possibly trouble Dunguib at that is Get Me Out Of Here. Regular readers of Racing Diary will now that we absolutely love Get Me Out Of Here. We have had it right off with him on his last three runnings and last time got a handsome 10/1 as Get Me Out Of Here won at Newbury. At the prices Get Me Out Of Here is a very solid each-way bet and certainly I will be on here. We simply don’t know how good Get Me Out of Here is, similarly the same could be said of Dunguib who might, just might be the real deal!

Supreme Novices Hurdle Betting Advice;

  • Dunguib to Win
  • Get Me Out Of Here- Each Way.

2:05 Cheltenham, Irish Independent Arkle Challenge Trophy Chase

The Arkle Chase is a race where there has only been one winning favourite in the last ten years. Forpadydeplasterer won last year at 8/1. The Arkle is one of the toughest races to solve but what the stats do tell us is that we need a good jumper and seven of the last eleven winners were trained by Pipe, Nicholls or King.

We have our starting point, but it is a certainty that Alan King will not be winning The Arkle. The market would suggest that this is going Ireland in 2010 with Captain Cee Bee and Sizing Europe heading the market. Tony McCoy will be on Captain Cee Bee who looked to be galloping all over Sizing Europe when falling at the last in a grade one in Ireland. Captain Cee Bee is the one to beat in my view.

Cheltenham Festival Free Horseracing Tips

Tony McCoy rides Captain Cee Bee

So can the Irish be beaten in The Arkle in 2010? In short Yes. I am taking them on with Somersby who I really like, having seen him win well at Warwick and then jump so well at Sandown. I am backing Somersby Win and Place (each-way) because I cannot for the life of me see him out of the frame. Captain Cee Bee gets up the hill but in my view Somersby could be the best of them all.

Arkle Chase Betting Advise;

  • Somersby, each-way.

2:40 Cheltenham William Hill Trophy Handicap Chase

Last year Tony McCoy gave Wicheta Lineman one of the best rides ever seen at Cheltenham. Sadly that horse is no longer with us but we have a very competitive handicap to get stuck into.   I have no huge bet planed at this stage, perhaps I will get something Live at the track which you can listen to on Suntalk Radio. The one I like, for small stakes is Theatrical Moment, although I write this prior to declarations and he may not run here, if he does I will be a backer!

3:20 Cheltenham Champion Hurdle Challenge Trophy (grade 1)

Tuesdays big race The Champion Hurdle. Go Native will land a £1m bonus if he wins here but there are 10 horses standing in his way. The Champion Hurdle has in many way been the hardest race antepost to fathom. There has been more in outs than the hokey cokey for the Champion Hurdle Field. We know that there are eleven runners, but who will win?

Nicky Henderson saddles three in the race with Punjabi, the reigning champion being the choice of stable jockey Barry Geraghty. In my view he has made a mistake, I think Zaynar will perform better and  in my view represents the best each-way value in the race. He was beaten at Kelso but I am prepared to forget that, the ground was a joke and he will get perfect going at Cheltenham. Last year he won the Triumph Hurdle and is looking to emulate Katchit to win the Champion Hurdle as a five year-old. However only one five year old from 79 that have started since 1985 have won.

What is interesting is that Ireland have a strong hand in The Champion Hurdle with Solwhit and Go Native reopposing. Go Native beat Solwhit in TheFighting Fifth Hurdle and I think can do it again. Here is that run at Newcastle last year;

Go Native looks very strong here. Go Native has only been beaten once this season which was by Voler La Vedette and has done nothing wrong since. Certainly against this field I would opt for Go Native. Binocular has looked a shadow of the horse he was, Punjabi won an egg and spoon race last time and has shown nothing since his Champion Hurdle win last year, Celestial Halo could run well but I am prepared to overlook Paul Nicholls’ horse here.

I think this is a really tough race but I am going with two in The Champion Hurdle.

Champion Hurdle Betting Advice;

  • Go Native- To Win.
  • Zaynar- Each-way

4:40 Cheltenham David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle

I will be absolutely gob smacked if this doesn’t go to an Irish trained runner. Quevega is looking to win back to back  David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle titles but has an amazing mare called Voler La Vedette standing in her way.

As I said when previewing the Champion Hurdle she absolutely hammered Go Native, which can be taken many ways but along with her unbeaten record shows that this is a very good mare. She would be my best bet of the day, including Dunguib in the first!

This is a great race and I do not expect Quevega to give up her crown easily. I am hugely encouraged that Barry Geraghty rides Voler La Vedette. She was considered for The Champion Hurdle, for me this is the right decision and think she is an absolute shoe in for The David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle and will deny Quevega a historic double.

David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle betting advice;

  • Voler La Vedette, Win (NAP)

Dunguib Heads Supreme Field

Dunguib heads 34 horses left in at the confirmation stage for the Spinal Research Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham on Tuesday.

Cheltenham Festival 2010

Dunguib wins Champion Bumper 2009

Last season’s Weatherbys Bumper winner, trained by Philip Fenton, is seen by many as a banker and is odds-on in the ante-post betting to get the Irish off to a flier in the opening race of the four-day feast. Fenton said:

Dunguib is grand and all has gone very smoothly, no problems thankfully. He’ll possibly jump a few flights on Thursday morning, before he heads off. We’ve taken him out of the Champion Hurdle and he goes for the Supreme. I’ve been very happy with him since Leopardstown, he’s jumped several hurdles since and he’s jumped them well.”

Paddy Power will donate £1000 to Spinal Research for every length Dunguib wins by, and Fenton added:

“If he wins half a length that will do for us, but hopefully he can do better than that for Spinal Research.”

Home contenders Get Me Out Of Here and Menorah are on target to clash with Dunguib next Tuesday. Main market rival to the Irish hotpot is totesport Trophy hero Get Me Out Of Here, owned by J P McManus and trained at Jackdaws Castle by Jonjo O’Neill.

“He came out of his last race well. His cut has healed up and he’s in good form,” said McManus’ racing manager Frank Berry of Tony McCoy’s mount. He got a bit of a gash at Newbury but he’s fine again now and Jonjo is very pleased with him. He goes there in good shape.”

Another leading fancy is Menorah, despite suffering a shock defeat at Ascot on his latest start.

“It wasn’t ideal and obviously we were thinking that he should go and win,” trainer Philip Hobbs told At The Races. But it was a little bit like when he was beaten at Doncaster in that it was a very muddling race. We were left in front and then got taken on so it was just a mess really. The horse is in good form so we’ll press on.”

Seeking Out Cheltenham Antepost Value

With the festival now quite literally days away, it is worth taking a look for some value in the Cheltenham Festival Antepost betting markets.

Most bookmakers are now non-runner no bet, certainly William Hill and Stan James are. He are some ante-post horseracing tips for the Cheltenham Festival 2010 from Racing Diary.

McCoy rides Get Me Out of Here at Cheltenham

The Cheltenham Festival kicks off at 1.30 on Tuesday 16th March with the Supreme Novice Hurdle.  Dunguib is the obvious one here and there is no value in backing him, indeed he will be a better price on the day than he is now. I know that some bookmakers will offer an enhanced price on Dunguib. If the hype is to be believed he has already won. Another unbeaten horse offers excellent value in my book.

It will come as no surprise to Racing Diary readers that I will offer you Get Me Out Of Here as an each-way alternative to Dunguib.  We have backed him every time since his debut win and we were on last time out when he bolted up despite a blunder in the closing stages. Dunguib is a very nice horse but there are questions over his jumping and at odds on I prefer to back ur boy here.

Dunguib could win easily but at the prices we will still get a better return backing Get Me Out Of Here each-way if he were to finish second to Dunguib.  Our advice- Back Get Me Out Of Here Each Way. The best prices for the Supreme Novice Hurdle are below;

The Champion Hurdle is a bit of a nightmare puzzle to solve. Zaynar was favourite until getting beaten at Kelso. He is now as high as 9/1 for the Champion Hurdle with many dismissing his chances now. Nicky Henderson has said that he still believes that Zaynar is a live contender for the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

The ground at Kelso was exceptionally bad. It has been said that had Zaynar not being running there then the meeting would have been called off. We know that the ground at Cheltenham will be perfect jumping ground. Ground that suits Zaynar down to the ground. He will also have his cheek-pieces back on and the hill at Cheltenham suits him, as we saw last year in the Triumph.

Zaynar- Champion Hurdle contender at 9/1

I am prepared to ignore the run at Kelso. At the prices I advice an each-way bet on Zaynar for the Champion Hurdle. The best prices for the Champion Hurdle are below;

In the RSA Chase, Nicky Henderson saddles two of the best chasers he says he has ever trained in Punchestowns and Long Run. I really like Punchestowns and have long had a voucher with his name on it for this race. However the value has gone. I actually think Henderson could have a clean-sweep in the RSA Chase with Burton Port filling the third place spot. I would advise a small each-way bet at a big price on Burton Port, but I am of the view that the winner will come from the top two in the betting.

Punchestowns second to Big Bucks in the World Hurdle

In the World Hurdle Big Bucks’ is most people’s idea of the banker of the Cheltenham Festival. I have to say he will be very hard to beat but something has to fill the frame and should anything go wrong for Big Bucks then we will be holding some value. I am delighted to have backed Tidal Bay, each-way for the Ladbrokes World Hurdle.

Tidal Bay is a very good horse. Indeed he won the Arkle a couple of years ago and came right back to form last time out with a big win in the Cleeve Hurdle last time out at Cheltenham. Connections know plenty about winning the World Hurdle, Inglis Dreaver having dominated the event in recent years. At the prices I am delighted to get some value, again even if Big Bucks wins (he will I am sure) I will get a better return should Tidal Bay get in the frame. He is a very good horse and I advise a good each-way bet on Tidal Bay for the World Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Is Dunguib Value at Evens for Cheltenham’s Supreme Novice Hurdle?

There’s no doubt that star Irish novice hurdler Dunguib has a very good chance of winning the opening race of the Cheltenham Festival, but is he really value at odds-on five weeks before the race? asks Elliot Slater.

Cheltenham Festival 2010

Very Impressive Dunguib

Following his victory at Leopardstown at the weekend when sent off odds-on against inferior opposition bookmakers reacted by making him the shortest priced favourite of the whole Cheltenham Festival. The success or failure of the whole Cheltenham week for many punters on both sides of the Irish Sea could rest on the shoulders of the seven-year-old son of Presenting.

However good he is, and Dunguib is very good, a big field of around 25 runners could bring unexpected problems. A horse could fall and bring him down, or carry him out, or badly hamper him. Furthermore, taking odds-on with the ground conditions as yet unknown and before a number of other contenders have had their final pre-Cheltenham outings seems a poor policy to me.

In the Leopardstown contest Dunguib didn’t jump as well as in the past but his engine was far superior to his rivals who were firmly put in their place. However, a mistake or two at Prestbury Park with 20-odd runners around him could make Dunguib’s task significantly harder. With the unexposed Menorah, the unbeaten Oscar Whisky, and my personal each-way fancy Peddler’s Cross among a number of potential improvers it is hard to argue that the case for Dunguib is completely cut and dried.

Many great horses have gone to Cheltenham over the years looking like they only to have to go down and come back to win but time after time reality has proved somewhat different.

Let’s be straight about this. I wouldn’t like to lay Dunguib, he is a very good horse, but his current Cheltenham odds mean he doesn’t appeal as a betting proposition.

He might be one to return in the future depending on how the market changes, but for now there should be more attractive Cheltenham Festival betting prospects to be found.

Carl Harris says in response…

The best prices may have gone but I have never seen a more exciting horse than Dunguib. Last year he made a mockery of the Champion bumper field and has looked unbeatable over hurdles. His jumping is not the best but his speed and engine more than make up for any awkwardness at his obstacles.

So at Evens, given that most firms are odds on I suggest that he probably is value, in my book he is the banker of the meeting and will go off odds on. If he goes off odds on then Evens is value! It depends if you want to take evens at Cheltenham, I would rather have an evens winning ticket than a 10/1 losing one.

You decide! Will he win? In my view, yes and easily!

Dunguib- Irish Banker Already?

Philip Fenton is in no rush to make any future plans for Dunguib after his awesome display in the Bar One Racing Royal Bond Novice Hurdle at Fairyhouse. Last season’s Champion Bumper winner has made a seamless transition to obstacles and, after two relatively low-key successes over timber, he routed Grade One opposition by seven lengths on Wednesday.

Trainer Philip Fenton said

“At the moment we are going to stick to novice races, but I would imagine he’ll have an entry in the Champion Hurdle, If we did go down that route we might look at the Irish Champion Hurdle beforehand, but all the options are open and we just want to make sure we make the right decision.”
