Timmy Murphy wins Sandown Bet365 Gold Cup, Poker De Sivola

Powered by Guardian.co.ukTimmy Murphy stood in the winner’s enclosure after driving Poker De Sivola to an improbable win in the Bet365 Gold Cup and admitted there had been times this season when he had considered giving up his career, having fallen out of fashion with many trainers.

Those in the stands may have expected him to give up during this race, as Poker De Sivola trailed the field from an early stage and still seemed too far behind over the third-last fence.

“You’d never pull him up,” Murphy said of the winner, who would not have been sent here, but for unseating Graham Lee at the 11th fence in the Scottish National last weekend. “We were a long way behind going to the first and he’s not a horse you can bully. You just have to accept it and, once you’ve passed one horse, he actually starts to put himself in the race.” Murphy was given a two-day ban for using his whip with excessive frequency from the second-last.

“The rides have dried up for me this year. It’s hard to get up and drive three or four hours for one or two rides. I appreciate everything I get but it’s been hard this year.”

Murphy, who said he would now continue for another season, added that he would have retired but for the continued patronage of David Johnson, owner of Poker De Sivola. “I’ll have a few more horses next year and hopefully those horses will be with stables that don’t mind Timmy riding for them,” Johnson said.

White Moonstone, who had been 9-1 for the 1,000 Guineas, will not run after pulling up stiff after exercise in Newmarket.

Balthazar King weights boost for Bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown

Powered by Guardian.co.ukThis article titled “Balthazar King given weights boost for Bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown” was written by Greg Wood, for The Guardian on Monday 18th April 2011 19.52 UTC

Youth and experience are vying for favouritism in the Bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown on Saturday after 25 horses were declared at the five-day stage for the last major event of the National Hunt season. A competitive race seems certain after an 18lb rise in the weights brought almost all of the entries into the handicap proper, including the market leaders Balthazar King and Baby Run, who are both top-priced at 6-1.

Balthazar King, a seven-year-old from the Philip Hobbs stable, has yet to contest a handicap over fences, but a busy novice season has seen him win four times from seven starts, including a five-runner contest at Cheltenham last week. Baby Run, meanwhile, brings a much higher profile to Sandown, having taken the Foxhunter Chase over the Grand National fences at Aintree earlier this month.

“Balthazar King won the other day and now he’s got in the handicap proper I’d think he’d have a great chance,” Richard Johnson, his jockey, said on Monday. “The way he stayed on at Cheltenham up the hill there you’d hope he’d get the three mile, five furlongs.”

Other entries for Saturday’s race include Meanus Dandy, who will be ridden by Ruby Walsh for Paul Nicholls, who will be confirmed as champion trainer once again at Sandown, while the weights are unlikely to rise any further after Siegemaster was confirmed as a probable runner under top weight of 11st 12lb. “He’s in the Irish National, but he’s more likely to run at Sandown if the ground is OK,” Dessie Hughes, the Co Kildare trainer, said. “If it’s good jumping ground, we’d travel for a race like that.”

The rise in the weights was welcomed by David Pipe as the trainer considered saddling Faasel and Gentle Ranger.

Dubai Prince, who was transferred to the Godolphin operation after winning both his starts as a juvenile for the Curragh trainer Dermot Weld last season, will miss both the 2,000 Guineas and the Derby after suffering a setback.

The son of Shamardal, who had been quoted at around 14-1 for the Newmarket Classic, has been diagnosed with a hairline fracture of his right iliac wing, part of the pelvis.

“It is a big shame as he had been shaping up nicely this spring,” Simon Crisford, Godolphin’s racing manager, said. “He will now need a few weeks off but he should be fine for later in the season.”

The Hitman On Saturday, Free Horseracing Tips, 4 Feb

The Hitman

Free Horseracing Tips on Saturday from The Hitman.

The big meeting is at Sandown on Saturday with a high quality jumps card. There is also the Welsh Champion Hurdle at Ffos Las with supporting cards at Wetherby (jumps) and a flat all-weather fixture at Lingfield. The Hitman has all your free horseracing tips and analysis of the big action for Saturday……

Binocular (1:55 Sandown) has scared off any serious challenge and should win as he likes under AP McCoy. He won this on the way to the Champion Hurdle and we will not learn much if anything here. It is good to see that the Champion Hurdle winner in action, but he will do more at home!

Free Horseracing Tips

Binocular Can win easily at Sandown

Medermit (2:25) is the interesting runner in the Chellenger’s Novice Chase who will face a stiff challenge for some pretty unexposed chasers. He is the highest rated of these with a mark of 155 but the improver and one I side with is Rock Noir in the McManus colours, Rock Noir has progressed niceley but this is a proper test and I am of the view he will be more than up to it!

Lush Life (3:00) is favourite for the Heroes Handicap Hurdle for the Nicky Henderson yard who certainly had a fantastic month in January. David Bass is given the task here and crucially takes off five pounds, which is a tight handicap is a shrewd move by Henderson.  He has won 3 of his last four starts and was in my book at least, impressive when winning at Cheltenham last time. Sandown is a stiff finish so we know he has the stamina to finish strongly.

Theatrical Moment (3:35) is one I think is due to run a big race at Sandown. AP McCoy rides for Jonjo O’Neil and this is a horse with bags of ability. 7 wins from 20 starts show that and fresh after a break, with conditions to suit I would suggest that Theatrical Moment is a rock solid each-way bet. Amateur ridden last time at Cheltenham I would ignore that completely and expect better today.

Oscar Whiskey (2:40) Ffos Las is as much of a non event as Binocular. The Ffos Las owner owns this one so no prizes as to why he runs here. On ratings he is miles clear and will like Binocular have done more had he stayed at Seven Barrows for a Saturday morning piece of work. It may be worth doubling up Binocular and Oscar Whiskey, even then it wont pay much!

Good Luck from the Hitman!

McCaoy Rides at Sandown

Sandown stage today’s feature meeting including the 21-runner Heroes Handicap Hurdle which has been won by champion trainer Paul Nicholls in three of the last four years. Prince Tom is his sole representative and this lightly-raced 7-y-o looks to have been laid out for the race since breaking his maiden at Taunton back in November.

He looks sure to go close but in a desperately tight handicap preference is for Like A Hurricane (3.00) as long as the ground doesn’t deteriorate significantly between now and post time. The selection’s best form has been on ground no worse than good to soft and he looks to have been saved from the soft and heavy ground which has prevailed for much of the winter since his success at Ascot back in October.

Up 7lbs for that effort the selection will need to improve again given that was a much weaker novice handicap but he is less exposed than many of the field and as long as the rains stay away looks worthy of each way support at Victor Chandler’s current show of 10/1.

The two Champion Hurdle Trials are uncompetitive events with reigning champion Binocular (1.55 Sand) and progressive stablemate Oscar Whisky (2.40 Ffos Las) having their final prep races ahead of the Cheltenham Festival. The latter also holds an entry in the World Hurdle over 3m and he will have to win well today to be considered a realistic contender for the Champion over the minimum distance of 2m.

Captain Chris looked ready for a return to 2m 4f when firmly put in his place at Newbury last time by Arkle favourite Ghizao and his tendency to jump slightly out to the right suggests that Sandown ought to suit. He is a potential improver but Medermit (2.25) also stepped up on previous efforts when trying this trip last time and the grey has previously hinted that he could go to the very top over fences.

Khachaturian (3.35) was recommended last week for the abandoned meeting at Doncaster and I see no reason to desert him in a lesser race against largely exposed rivals. At the time of writing Donald McCain’s last nine runners have finished either first or second so it would be fair to say his string are in good nick.

Adams Island (3.10 Ffos Las) was a game winner at Doncaster last month and with the winner having subsequently bolted up he must go close off a mark only 3lb higher. Preference is for Maktu (3.10) who ran a cracker in the Welsh National considering he pulled like a train for most of the race and with a good pace guaranteed he can give Pat Murphy a welcome winner.

The Henderson/Geraghty combination could have a field day at the Welsh track and Loose Performer (4.15) looks sure to appreciate the step up to 3m having lost out by a head on his hurdle debut at Doncaster. A winning point-to-pointer he is held in some regard by connections and ought to go one better this afternoon.

At Fontwell tomorrow the mare Guydus (2.50) has been bogged down in her two starts over fences to date but is considered a potential improver from the Venetia Williams camp.  She is now 9lbs lower than when making her chase debut at Towcester and will have few better opportunities in a poor race.

The Irish Hennessy is the highlight on a terrific card at Leopardstown tomorrow with any number of stars on show including Mikael D’Haguenet (2.40) who has yet to win in two starts over fences but is still considered a potential Gold Cup winner. He is so talented (but fragile in equal measure) that connections are still considering this year’s Gold Cup rather than the RSA Chase if they can get him to Cheltenham in A one shape.

Horseracing, Weekend Betting Preview

Today’s feature is the Victor Chandler Chase from Ascot although it is a modest renewal of this Grade 1 contest. Former Champion Chaser Master Minded won the corresponding race a couple of years ago and has looked back to his best with wide-margin victories at Ascot and Cheltenham so far this term. AP McCoy won the Tingle Creek on the Paul Nicholls-trained 8-y-o back in 2008 and the current Sports Personality of the Year takes the ride again this afternoon.

Master Minded on the way to the Champion Chase

Petit Robin has finished runner up in the last couple of renewals of the race but he is a better horse going left-handed and Somersby is taken to chase the favourite home having ran on well in the Tingle Creek behind Master Minded last month.

The big betting race of the day is the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock. This valuable and prestigious prize has been won by some of the great northern chasers of the past including Gold Cup winners Bregawn, Little Owl and Jodami but no Irish horse, to date, has ever won the prize.

Noel Glynn crosses the Irish Sea with the progressive Becauseicouldntsee who finished runner up in the 4m National Hunt Chase at last year’s Cheltenham Festival. Nina Carberry takes the ride and his excellent jumping will be a great asset at the Lancashire track, but I hope Maktu (3.15) settles a bit better than he did at Chepstow where he ran a cracker in the circumstances to finish fifth in the Welsh National a fortnight ago. It is quite possible that he is not yet over those exertions but I believe he is the best handicapped horse in the race and he is given the nod.

There is a disappointing turnout for the StanJames.com Champion Hurdle Trial with Peddlers Cross likely to go off about 1/6 to retain his unbeaten record in a four-runner race. The Novice Chase, however, sees only five to post but it is an absolute cracker with Wymott (2.40) in receipt of weight from the others just given the vote for the formidable combination of owner Trevor Hemmings and trainer Donald McCain.

The recommendation would prefer another half mile but jockey Jason Maguire can dictate his own pace out in front and hopefully take the finishing kick out of the talented quartet who oppose.

Wincanton must pass an 8.30 inspection this morning but if racing goes ahead Promising Anshan (2.10) can indeed fulfill the “promise” he showed on his penultimate start at Newbury for Paul Nicholls. A winning point-to-pointer he has yet to race right-handed under rules but gave every indication that this trip would be well within his compass when staying on dourly for pressure last time.

Venetia Williams has her string in good heart and Tenor Nivernais (1.40) could have been let in lightly for his British debut having won both starts over timber when trained in France by Guillaume Macaire.

Weather permitting there is an excellent card at Leopardstown tomorrow with Hurricane Fly (2.45) looking to cement his Champion Hurdle claims in the Irish equivalent. Solwhit was not given the best of rides when the pair last met over Xmas but the Willie Mullins 7-y-o is taken to confirm his superiority and head to the Festival unbeaten over hurdles this term.

Hidden Cyclone (3.20) will appreciate stepping up in trip to 2m 4f for the first time having lost nothing in defeat in Grade 1 company last time. He will not be seen to best effect until he goes over fences next season but there are more races to be won this term and he merits the weekend nap.

Poet's Place Wins Portland and Now heads to Ayr

3:30 Sandown, My Vindication, Win. Richard Hughes and Richard Hannon are the undisputed kings of the two-year-old division, oppose them at your peril! This is an exceedingly interesting novice stakes insomuch as Richard Hannon debuts the un-raced My Vindication rather than an easier maiden engagement. Treasury Devil, from the in form John Gosden Stable won well on his debut but Richard Hannon should have a good guide on the form as he trained the second in that race and indeed the form hardly looks solid, given the performance of the Hannon runner next time out. Because of the record of the stable and the fact that they are confident enough to debut this one in this race I suggest My Vindication is a very solid bet here.

4:05 Sandown, Skysurfers, Win. This is a decent listed contest where the Godolphin runner brings both solid stable and individual form to the race. Frankie Dettori is approaching his century for the season and is riding as good as ever, in my opinion. I saw Skysurfers last time out at York, in the City of York stakes, where he was second to our very decent horse of Michael Jarvis’. A reproduction of that will probably be good enough to win here. The forecast going of good should be right up his street and this improving four-year-old is my bet to land this Blistered Fortune Stakes at Sandown on Wednesday.

Looking ahead to the weekend it should be a decent one particularly on Saturday with the .William Hill Ayr Gold Cup and the Mill Reef stakes at Sandown being the feature races. Poet’s Place is the horse everyone wants to back at Ayr on Saturday and as we saw in the Portland handicap at Doncaster last Saturday he clearly is a worthy favourite. My advice would be to take the early price about Poet’s Place because this has the hallmarks of a plunge horse and will go off much shorter than the current 5-1 opening show offered by William Hill on Tuesday.

Good luck!

Saturdays Free Horseracing Tips. 21 August

Well its Saturday and I am taking a break after today for a few days, so there wont be any meaningful coverage on here until Thursday. We have your free horseracing tips for today….

Free Horseracing Tips

Chester on Saturday

After a wonderful four days at York, we head to Sandown and Chester. Free Horseracing Tips from Racing Diary…..

2:05 Sandown, SETA, Win.
Kieren Fallon is in impressive form at the moment and he can have another listed race winner here with Seta in my view. A cracking start to proceedings and a race in which the Classic Generation have held the upper hand in recent years and they can dominate again with SETA fancied to overcome her low draw and take another step towards fulfilling her undoubted potential. Since disappointing in the Guineas Luca Cumani has trod gently with his filly and this is a significantly tougher Listed race than the one which she won at Warwick last time; she wasn’t all that impressive that day but entries in the Group 1 Sun Chariot and Matron Stakes indicate that connections haven’t lost their faith in her and the step back up in trip shouldn’t pose any problems.

3:55 Chester, Admirable Spirit, Win.
The stables two year-olds have had such a good year, but of late they have not been dominating as they have done. I think though this will not worry us here. Richard Hannon’s charge won on debut before not being held far in Group Company. The form from that last race looks to have plenty of strength to it and another improved run is expected. NAP.

Good Luck, have a great few days, see you soon!

Thursdays Free Horseracing Tips, 5 August

All eyes are on York in a couple of weeks but for today we have bets at Sandown and Haydock. Free Horseracing Tips from Racing Diary, by Carl Harris

Free Horseracing Tips

Midday heads to York

Henry Cecil’s Nassau Stakes heroine Midday will go in search of further Group1 glory in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks on August 19. The four-year-old secured her third victory at the highest level at Goodwood last Saturday, following on from her success in the race 12 months ago and her glorious display in the Breeders’ Cup Filly And Mare Turf.

I can’t wait for York, four days of fantastic racing, there are so many big races on the card, it will be superb, at my favourite track in the World! Nothing that good today but we do have so free horseracing tips for Thursday…

2:40 Haydock, Nordic Spruce, Win. Henry Cecil may be looking forward to York, but today he has a once raced, unbeaten filly who can follow up on her debut victory at Nottingham. Tom Queally and Henry Cecil have had a good season and we keep saying it here at Racing Diary, there is no better trainer of a filly than Sir Henry Cecil. (Knighted by Racing Diary).

3:40 Haydock, Uphold, Win. Barry Hills has a 25% strike rate with his runners in the past 14 days and I think will add to that with Uphold, who made all to win last time out. He faces a much tougher opposition this time but was a seven length winner on seasonal reappearance at Nottingham. The trainer has a 22% strike-rate at this course over the past five seasons and from an initial mark of 87 we may be on the right side of the weights here.

Richard Hannon two year-old alert….

5:40 Sandown, Piece Of Mind.. first time out, Richard Hughes in the plate, you can’t ignore this combination! It pays to follow them, so I will do just that!

Good Luck!

Thursdays Free Horseracing Tips, 22 July

Thursday sees things dramatically improve on the horseracing front. Much more quantity and quality for us to get stuck into and Carl Harris thinks he has foolproof system for Sandown. Free Horseracing Tips from Racing Diary.

Free Horseracing Tips

Sandown - where we should have a winner!

I think I have discovered a winning betting system, having tried and tested it this year, to my great profit, I can tell you it works! It is just so simple, Back the Hannon Two Year-Olds! Here are todays free horseracing tips, with the system very much in mind;

2:10 Sandown Cadeaux Pearl, Win. Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes team up here in the Epsom opener, a two year-old maiden. Second last time out, you would think this should be a formality for the colt, but he is likely to be a very short and prohibitive price. One to double up your other bets with for a Brucie Bonus perhaps?
totesport.com

2:45 Sandown, Nezhenka, Win. Much as with the Hannon two year-olds the Sir Mark Prescott three year-old stayers are worth following. We have seen plenty go in this month and here is another. Nezhenka is related to some Black Type performers, the handicapper may have taken no chances, but this is Sir Mark we are talking about, but the market must be watched. I like the look of this one.

3:20 Sandown, Admirable Spirit, Win. Back to the system for my best bet of the day. Admirable Spirit showed a fine turn of foot when impressing from a decent yardstick in a Newbury maiden but the four horses from the race to have run since have all lost. I am hoping that encourages the layers to give some value, but they bear too many scares from laying Hannon youngsters this year, but there are plenty of short memories amongst layers I have noticed. Hughes is a wonderful pilot and is the one man you want, he is cool as a cucumber and will I am sure do the business again today!

Tonight, Epsom…

Two quick ones at Epsom tonight. 6:10, Perfect Blossom could do the business and our old mate Brannagh (8:50) can follow up on a big priced win last time out when we were on.

Wednesdays Free Horseracing Tips, 21 July

Its not a great day again on Wednesday. You know its low quality when you have a seller on the Sandown card. Free Horseracing Tips, for Wednesday from Racing Diary….

Free Horseracing Tips

Sandown - where we should have a winner!

6:05 Sandown, Dream Win, Win. With no Marjury Daw in the field this is a much easier task for Brian Ellison’s Dream Win. This is also an apprentice race, which usually rings alarm bells, but Dale Swift is an excellent jockey and I have no worries with him aboard. Dream Win win last time at Wolves and I think he will do so again back on turf and make the long trip to the Esher track worth it. Koo’s Racing Club is doing very well this season and I suspect they may notch up another here!

8:15 Sandown, Squall, Win. Jeremy Noseda is one of the best trainers in the business. Squall makes his handicap debut after winning a Ripon maiden from a mark of 77 here tonight. That is unlikely to be a mark that stops him being very competitive and I suspect he will greatly improve for in time. He may prove to be very well handicapped. I advise watching the market. This is my bet of the day and with Frankie Dettori booked we may be on to something good!

8:50 Sandown, Tilos Gem, Win. Mark Johnston usually has a winner here and Tilos Gem could be another of his stayers to land the money. This fella is in no way a stable star , indeed he has not won for 12 months, one win from 17 races, but he can go one better I reckon here tonight.

Good Luck, Carl
