Rite Of Passage Wins Gold Cup, Royal Ascot Betting Update

25/1 RITE OF PASSAGE TO MAKE HISTORY WITH DUAL-PURPOSE GOLD CUPS

Rite of Passage has been installed by William Hill as a 25-1 chance to become the first horse to win Flat, and National Hunt Gold Cups following his victory at Ascot this afternoon.

Picture

Punters were caught unawares when Dermot Weld’s dual-purpose gelding Rite of Passage showed his stamina capabilities over the testing 2m4f trip, by just holding off Aidan O Brien’s Age of Aquarius at odds of 20-1 with William Hill.

After storming home in track-record breaking time, Hills have installed the Irish trained-stayer at odds of 5-1 for a repeat victory next year, and installed him as a 10-1 shot to triumph in the Melbourne Cup later this year.

It could be a third possibly victory for handler Dermot Weld who became the first European trainer to take Australia’s iconic race when winning with Vintage Crop in 1993. The Curragh trainer also followed-up with a win by Media Puzzle in 2002.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill: “We were looking for a new staying champion, and it came in an unlikely form of Rite of Passage. A top-class performer over hurdles, he has now become one in both codes. It is not beyond the realms of possibility that we witness a dual Cheltenham, and Ascot Gold Cup winner if he ever takes up chasing.’’

Saeed bin Suroor landed back-to-back victories in the Ribblesdale Stakes when Hibaayeb (4-1 joint-favourite) ran out an impressive winner in the hands of Frankie Dettori at Royal Ascot.

Barry and Michael Hills were back in the Royal Ascot winners’ enclosure after the victory of Ransom Note (9-1) in the Britannia Stakes. Approve dented a couple of lofty reputations when battling to success in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Purple Moon Huge Morning Gold Cup Punt

Stan James were forced to slash Purple Moon from 33s to 14/1 for the Ascot Gold Cup following a morning plunge on the Luca Cumani trained former Ebor winner.

The Queen may have a couple of fancied runners this afternoon on Ladies Day but it will be hats off to Tom Segal if Purple Moon wins the Gold Cup”.

Thursdays Free Royal Ascot Betting Tips, 17 June (Podcast)

Another winning day for us as Strawberrydaiquiri (9-2) prevailed in the Windsor Forest Stakes at Royal Ascot. It is 2-0 to the punters, now our Royal Ascot Betting bandwagon rolls on to day three, ladies day at Royal Ascot.

Free Horseracing Betting Tips

Another Royal Ascot Winner for Racing Diary!

There is nothing better than winning and your Royal Ascot betting being well in profit! Another great day for us on Wednesday, now we have yet more free horseracing tips for Royal Ascot, on Thursday which is of course ladies day! There is no Yeats in the Royal Ascot Gold Cup, the Group One feature of the day, but I think we will have two very good winners, with just two bets today.

I am taking a more targeted approach, now our Royal Ascot betting bank is well in the black! Ladies day is always more fun than business. I wont be there but I have two strong bets, but am ambivalent about the other races on the card. Two bets at Royal Ascot today;

2:30 Royal Ascot, Norfolk Stakes, Dinkum Diamond, Win

This is a good two year-old race. I think it breaks down to a match between Richard Hannon’s Zebedee and Dinkum Diamond, who I rate as the best of these. He won so well at Sandown, in the National Stakes, up the testing hill that I immediately noted him as the one to follow at Royal Ascot. I am just glad he tips up in this and not against Strong Suit.

Henry Candy has placed him right, this is a good race for him and a good bet at about the 3/1 mark. Dane O’Neil keeps the ride, a positive. I think this is a very good two-year-old. Like Strong Suit on Tuesday the dogs are barking for this one, lets hope that the horse’s bite is worthy of the bark.

Best bet of the day, DINKUM DIAMOND, at Royal Ascot, Thursday.

Manifest can win at Royal Ascot

3:50 Royal Ascot, Gold Cup (Group One) Manifest, Win.

At York in the Yorkshire Cup manifest simply blew the field away. That was over 1m 6f and today is over 2m 4f but I think that he is a stayer. With over 80 Royal Ascot winners, including Timepiece yesterday, Henry Cecil is not a man to make elementary mistakes. Manifest could be a very good satyer for the future.

There is no Yeats of course, who has won this contest for the past four years. A new name will be etched on the Ascot Gold Cup in 2010, I think it will be Manifest. Ask could run a big race, he is officially the highest rated horse in the race but has to give a couple of punds away and is without a run this season.

Manifest just kept going at York and what I saw, in the flesh that day, gave me encouragement. I think this is tailor-made for Manifest. I am not saying he is another yeats but I do thik he will win at a faily good price.

Just two bets. Here is Thursdays Royal Ascot Betting Podcasts……

Geordieland Going Straight To Royal Ascot

Geordieland is likely to make his first appearance of the season back in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot.

Royal Ascot Betting Tips

Geordieland, for Royal Ascot

Jamie Osborne’s remarkable stayer finished second to Yeats in the Group One in 2007 and 2008 and third to the Ballydoyle legend last year. He rounded off the campaign by filling the same position behind Askar Tau in the Doncaster Cup.

“He will go first time out to Ascot, all being well,” said Osborne.

Yeats we Salute You..Watch Yeats Win his fourth Gold Cup…

Yeats- 4 time Ascot Gold Cup Winner…

Yeats won his first race in 2003 at the Curragh and was the Derby favourite at three but missed the race and the season with injury.

Had he won the Derby he would never have become a stayer but once he was stepped up in trip he has never looked back. Yeats won his first Gold Cup in 2006 winning at 7-1 for Kieron Fallon. He won for Mick Kinane in 2007 and Johnny Murtagh in 2009 and again in 2009.

Simply the best stayer that there has ever been. He won the race today landing a huge gamble. Watch the race and see how Johnny Murtagh sent him for home early and put him clear of the field. Click Play below to watch Yeats win the 2009 Ascot Gold Cup (from Youtube).

Credit for Yeats’ win must go to Aidan O’Brien who is quite simply a master trainer and delivered Yeats to Ascot in unbelievable condition. As soon as Yeats was brought out to the paddock it was obvious he would win!

The gamble was simply massive and bookies were caught as the price moved from 5-2 to 6-4. Yeats won the Royal Ascot Gold Cup for a fourth time and brought the house down on Ladies Day at Royal Ascot.

Thursday – Day Three of Royal Ascot…

Carl Harris of Racing Diary Looks at Day Three of Royal Ascot…todays schedule is another great one;

  • 2:30 Norfolk Stakes (group 2) (2yo, Class 1, 5f, 12 runners)
  • 3:05 Ribblesdale Stakes (fillies’ Group 2) (3yo, Class 1, 1m 4f, 10 runners)
  • 3:45 Gold Cup (group 1) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m 4f, 9 runners)
  • 4:20 Britannia Stakes Heritage Handicap (straight) (3yo, Class 2, 1m, 30 runners)
  • 4:55 Hampton Court Stakes (listed) (3yo, Class 1, 1m 2f, 13 runners)
  • 5:30 King George V Stakes Heritage Handicap (3yo, Class 2, 1m 4f, 19 runners)

Another Thrilling Day on Day 3 ahead...

Another Thrilling Day on Day 3 ahead...

The Gold Cup is the highlight of Ladies Day at Royal Ascot on Thursday. Yeats is looking for a historic fourth successive Gold Cup which will bring the house down if he was able to achieve it. There are other big races either side of the Gold Cup for punters to enjoy.

2:30 Norfolk Stakes (group 2) (2yo, Class 1, 5f, 12 runners)

A group 2 5f 2 y-o event kicks off the card and it could be another one for Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes. Twelve runners go to post and I am firmly with Monsieur Chevalier. Timeform have this one as top rated at 124. He is the firm favourite at 11/10 ahead of Radiohead at 7-1. Monsieur Chevalier has won all four of his starts so far to date, and was a good winner at Sandown last time of a listed event.

Racing Diary Advice…

Back Monsieur Chevalier to win

3:05 Ribblesdale Stakes (fillies’ Group 2) (3yo, Class 1, 1m 4f, 10 runners)

I am with Sam Turner of the Daily Mail who has given us Leocorno as his best bet at Royal Ascot. Sam says;

LEOCORNO (Ascot, 3.05 Thursday) looked a star filly in waiting at Sandown on her reappearance and it appears significant that her mercurial handler preferred to sidestep The Oaks in preference for today’s event. The scopey daughter of Pivotal greatly impressed Frankie Dettori at the Esher venue and, although she is yet to prove her stamina at this afternoon’s trip, there appears little doubt at home that she could improve again for the step up to 12 furlongs.

Leocorno is the favourite at 7/4 but is not the top rated by Timeform. That accolade goes to Take the Hint who is rated 123 behind Leocorno at 119. The way Leocorno won last time though I am thoroughly with Sir Michael Stoute’s runner.

3:45 Gold Cup (group 1) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m 4f, 9 runners)

This is the biggest race of the week and has the added spice of Yeats going for his fourth successive Gold Cup. The market speaks in favour of Aidan o’Brien’s superstar. The odds are as follows;

Paddy Power: 9-4 YEATS, 3 Geordieland, Patkai, 6 Veracity, 14 Eastern Anthem, 25 Hindu Kush, 33 Centennial, Washington Irving, Sagara

Geordieland is back to form as he showed at Sandown beating Patkai. Yeats is the best stayer Royal Ascot has ever seen but is he still the horse he was? He disappointed on his seasonal reappearance but that was on shocking ground and we can ignore that. Yeats is miles clear on all ratings and if he is the same horse as last year he will win!

Here is Yeats winning the 2008 Gold Cup, will Geordieland be the danger again?

Paddy Power have come up with some Yeats specials…

WHERE WILL YEATS FINISH IN THE ASCOT GOLD CUP?

Paddy Power: 9-4 First, 3 Second, 6 Third, 11-8 Fourth or further down the field

YEATS ASCOT GOLD CUP WINNING DISTANCE SPECIAL

    Paddy Power:

5-1 Yeats to win by up to and including two and three quarter lengths

9-2 Yeats to win by three lengths or more

I think Yeats will win! If he was not up to it he would not be here, he has nothing to prove and Aidan O’Brien has enough horses not to have to force him to run. The signs are there and there will not be a dry eye in the house if he does it.

    Racing Diary Advice..

    Back Yeats to Win.

    4:20 Britannia Stakes Heritage Handicap (straight) (3yo, Class 2, 1m, 30 runners)

This is such a tough race that we will analyse this race seperately and in full.

    4:55 Hampton Court Stakes (listed) (3yo, Class 1, 1m 2f, 13 runners)

A good race in prospect and Johnny Murtagh can sign off, before his suspension with another winner for Aidan O’Brien aboard Freemantle. Top rated by Timeform and favourite in the market at 11/8. He was a short head second to Black Bear Island in York’s Dante Stakes and takes a drop in grade to listed company. I can not see him beaten here and am firmly with the Ballydoyle team who could have a very big day.

    Racing Diary Advice

    Back Freemantle to win

    King George V Stakes Heritage Handicap (3yo, Class 2, 1m 4f, 19 runners)

Another hot handicap. We will analyse this seperately.

Royal Ascot Gold Cup Preview..From Paddy Power

Paddy Power provide a preview of the Royal Ascot Gold Cup…

yeats-2Dry eyes will be few and far between if Flat racing’s Duracell Bunny Yeats wins the Ascot Gold Cup on Ladies’ Day for the fourth consecutive year. It’ll be no cakewalk for the Aidan O’Brien trained superstar and we assess those who might put it up to the seemingly invincible stayer in this race.

Centennial John Gosden’s colt has never raced beyond 1m 6f and this step up against one of the game’s greatest stayers is not the place to do it. The four year old made absolutely no impression in the Yorkshire Cup when sixth behind the ever-improving Ask and we’re struggling to find anything nice to say about him.

Eastern Anthem Godolphin continue to fire blanks when it comes to the big races in the UK and, had it not been for a successful three timer at home in Nad Al Sheba, Saeed Bin Suroor’s five year old would probably be on his way to sire another crop of flops.

Geordieland After 15 attempts, Jamie Osborne’s eight year old finally got his head out in front in last year’s Yorkshire Cup. He followed that up with respectable display finishing second behind Yeats in this race last year by five lengths. His preparations have been good this term and will give O’Brien’s favourite a run for his money again.

Hindu Kush Dandy Nicholls is probably better known for bringing sprinters to their peak, but in Hindu Kush, he has a horse with class, temperament and ability to push the Irish Champion. It’s putting them together that’s the problem. Made all to win a lucrative contest at Leopardstown last time out, but this will definitely test his stamina to the limit.

Patkai Finished five lengths behind Geordieland in the Henry II Stakes, but was a bit unlucky on that occasion and stamina seems to be in abundance. Will the Michael Stoute horse stay the 2m 4f though?

Sagara Hasn’t won since his maiden victory in ’07 and while the potential has been there, Saeed Bin Suroor’s five year old is another that just can’t go up the gears when facing top quality opposition.

Tastahil Question marks remain about whether Barry Hills’ charge would stay the trip and a shot at the Hardwicke Stakes would probably be the preferred choice for the stable.

Veracity Conquered stable-mate Sagara in Newmarket’s Jockey Club Cup last year that the latter should have won had he not hung badly right. Godolphin’s third runner in the race suggests they’re trying their hardest to prevent Coolmore landing an unprecedented feat in the race.

Washington Irving An interesting acquisition for the Howard Johnson yard, but the four year old gelding (that explains why Coolmore let him go) didn’t make any impression on debut for his current trainer. Impeccably bred, but clearly has a questionable appetite for racing and this seems like a pointless exercise in this arena.

Yeats Three time winner of the race, the eight year old is a supreme stayer. His seasonal reappearance at Leopardstown in the Vintage Crop Stakes was extremely disappointing, but it gave an indication that age might be finally creeping up on him. Or perhaps he wasn’t fully fit. Either way, he’s sure to be fired up for another crack at will soon be dubbed the ‘Yeats’ Gold Cup’

Yeats has 9 possible rivals for his Gold Cup Crown….Royal Ascot Gold Cup

Can Yeats Make it 4 Gold Cups?

Yeats won his third Gold Cup at Royal Ascot last year, can he do it again and make it 4 at Royal Ascot 2009?

Yeats heads 10 acceptors for the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot 2009 on Thursday.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained 8-year-old will be seeking an unprecedented fourth victory in the premier staying championship, although he must bounce back from a disappointing reappearance at Navan in April, but that was on soft ground. It will be good at Ascot.

Leading the opposition is his old foe Geordieland, twice runner-up to Yeats in this race and on a high after landing the Henry II Stakes at Sandown. Jamie Osborne’s enegmatic grey showed battling qualities many thought he did not possess that day in overhauling Patkai, who reopposes as he seeks another Royal success to add to his Queen’s Vase from 12 months ago. He was second last season, but can he go one better?

Godolphin have three possibles to choose from in Coronation Cup also-ran Eastern Anthem, Sagara and Yorkshire Cup third Veracity. John Gosden could field Centennial while David Nicholls’ Hindu Kush, the Howard Johnson-trained Washington Irving and Barry Hills’ Tastahil complete the other contenders.

    johnny_murtagh_win

Murtagh will be aboard and all could be set for a historic win.

Jamie Osborne thinks Geordieland will win it!

Jamie Osborne expects Geordieland to rise to the challenge in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot next Thursday. The eight-year-old looked better than ever when winning the Henry II Stakes at Sandown on his reappearance. He actually found off the bridle, which is unusual!

However, Osborne remains fearful of three-time winner Yeats. He said: “If I could take one horse out of the race it would be Yeats.

“I wouldn’t be worried if I was them (about his reappearance run). He’s a big, gross eight-year-old who ran on soft ground and if he wasn’t quite 100% on ground he didn’t like, I wouldn’t read too much into it. He also seems to raise his game a bit in this race and he’s the one to beat. However, Osborne thinks Geordieland’s new-found spark can help him peg back some, and possibly all, of last year’s winning verdict. He just seemed to run out of gas a bit last year but he’s been working in a different manner this year and he’s not going to run out of gas. I think we are every bit as good as Yeats and with the new and improved Geordieland, we can go and win it.”

    YEATS TO STRIKE AGAIN?

Yeats is a 5-2 favourite with Paddy Power for next Thursday’s Ascot Gold Cup in his bid to secure a record fourth victory in the race following today’s confirmations. Patkai is 11-4 second best with the universe’s friendliest bookmaker.

    See You Later..Patkai wins easily!

More Great Advice From Racing Diary….

Patkai laid down a marker for the Ascot Gold Cup at Royal Ascot by absolutely slaughtering his rivals in the Group Three Woodcote Stud Sagaro Stakes, no surprise to us as we predicted just that!

The four-year-old was sent off the 2-5 favourite and won like a certainty!

We also laid Tungsten Strike who was one of three lays for us to lose today. Our betting advice has paid some dividends and we are now looking forward to the 2000 Guineas on Saturday and the 1000 Guineas on Sunday.

Then The Derby and then Royal Ascot. Patkai must now figure for the Royal Ascot Gold Cup after that! Yeats disappointed on Sunday, but teh ground did not suit him and could stand in teh way of Patkai adding teh Gold Cup to the Queen’s Vase he won at Royal Ascot last year.

Still, much to look forward to!
