The former champion jockey has linked up with his friend bookmaker Paddy Power to place a £1000 charity bet that he goes all the way – and at odds of 33/1 to win this year’s show a Dunwoody victory would return £33,000 for his Trust which benefits the likes of Racing Welfare, Sparks, Spinal Research and Alzheimers.

Paddy said: “Richard would be too modest to ask for your votes but I’m not. Just like in his racing days Richard could well be this year’s People’s Champion on the show, maybe we’ll have another John Sergeant to enjoy!”

Paddy Power has also started a Facebook Fanpage for fans of the champion jockey to show their support – including a video of Paddy and Richard discussing this year’s runners and riders on the show.

Paddy Power are also betting on Dunwoody’s points score on Friday night, making a tally of 16-20 points the most likely at 7/4. However it looks as though the jockey will have to crack the whip to win the competition with Ricky Whittle and Ali Bastian the hot favourites at 2/1 and 9/4 respectively.

FROM RIDING BOOTS TO DANCING SHOES! DUNWOODY 20-1 FOR BBC DANCING CHALLENGE!

Former Champion jockey Richard Dunwoody is facing his toughest test to date when swapping his riding boots for dancing shoes in the forthcoming series of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, and is a 20-1 chance with bookmakers William Hill to win the BBC show.

The 45-year-old has been confirmed as a contestant in this year’s series and despite retiring from racing, will once again been donning silks to face off against his rivals in the dancing challenge.

In a show rife with sporting personalities William Hill make Richard Dunwoody a 7-1 chance to finish top sportsperson in the show, and 8-1 to be ‘upsides at the last’ and make the final three. Used to achieving the impossible, Hills make Dunwoody a 25-1 chance to score a perfect ‘40’ in a dance with his partner Lilia Kopylova, but just 5-1 to ‘fall at the first’ and exit the show ahead of any of his rivals.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said:

‘’Forget winning two Grand Nationals! This challenge could be harder than the gruelling 4 ½ miles of the Aintree course! Jockeys tend to be more Freddy Kruger than Fred Astaire on the dance floor and as elegant as he was in the saddle, Richard may find himself pipped at the post this time.’’
