Mark Hateley ‘offered cash’ not to play for Rangers against Marseille

Powered by Guardian.co.ukThis article titled “Mark Hateley ‘offered cash’ not to play for Rangers against Marseille” was written by Marcus Christenson, for The Guardian on Wednesday 23rd February 2011 01.34 UTC

Mark Hateley has revealed he was offered cash not to play in a crucial Champions League game for Rangers against the eventual winners Marseille in 1993.

The French team’s success in the tournament was later tainted by revelations that they had bribed their opponents Valenciennes in the league before the Champions League final.

Hateley, speaking in an interview to be broadcast on ITV before the Marseille-Manchester United game on Wednesday night, said: “It was a friend of a friend, who had got in touch via certain routes, basically asking me not to play. It would be financially rewarding for you, he said, not to play in the Marseille game.

“It was a French-speaking person, offering me large sums of money not to play against Marseille. It points the finger at a person, or persons, working within that club not wanting me to play.”

Hateley still missed the match because of suspension and Rangers finished one point behind Marseille in the group.

Celtic enjoy breathing space at the top after beating dismal Rangers

Celtic 3 Rangers 0 – a thrashing for Rangers at Celtic Park… Match Report

Powered by Guardian.co.ukThis article titled “Celtic enjoy breathing space at the top after beating dismal Rangers” was written by Ewan Murray at Celtic Park, for guardian.co.uk on Sunday 20th February 2011 14.44 UTC

It seems appropriate that Gary Hooper, one of the most impressive performers of this, Neil Lennon’s first full season in charge of Celtic, orchestrated this Old Firm victory. Finally, the manager’s destiny is in his own hands.

Celtic now lead their oldest rivals by eight points in the Scottish Premier League, with Rangers’ two games in hand no longer sufficient to send them back to the top of the table.

On what was an utterly miserable day for Rangers Kris Commons, who rejected a move to Ibrox from Derby County last month, scored Celtic’s third goal.

Rangers’ cause was not helped by the half-time loss of Steven Naismith although the Scotland international had looked short of fitness.

Celtic swarmed around their opponents in midfield, with Rangers painfully unable to offer meaningful supply to Nikica Jelavic.

Hooper is already worth considerably more than the £1.6m paid by Celtic to Scunthorpe United for his services. His goals may prove priceless in this title race.

Commons fed Hooper for the opener, with the striker skipping past David Weir with a terrific first touch. A subsequent one slotted the ball between the legs of the Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor.

El Hadji Diouf, who attracted the attentions of police and stewards every time he took a corner, caused chaos in the Celtic back line with a teasing cross, but the visitors were abject in the opening half.

Hooper ensured they were also all-but defeated. Georgios Samaras played in the full-back Emilio Izaguirre, whose low cross was converted by Hooper in smart fashion. The Rangers captain complained that Izaguirre had been offside when it was himself who had played the Honduran on. Given the scale of Weir’s protests, and the fact he collected a booking later in the game, he was fortunate to see out the match.

Kenny Dalglish was a visitor to Parkhead, with the impressive Izaguirre a potential reason for the Liverpool manager’s trip north.

Rangers improved after the interval, with Diouf forcing Fraser Forster into a save from a lobbed effort. Jelavic then headed narrowly wide of Forster’s left-hand post.

At the other end Scott Brown almost capitalised on a McGregor error, with Sasa Papac clearing the Celtic midfielder’s effort from his own goalline.

It was left to Commons to cap Lennon’s perfect afternoon. The winger deceived McGregor with a 19-yard shot which appeared to swerve, although perhaps an international goalkeeper should not have been beaten by such an attempt.

For once in these fraught occasions, Celtic Park could relax for the final 20 minutes. Rangers, who were unusually disjointed, have been set a challenge to recover from a significant blow.

Tuesdays Old Firm Betting

Neil Lennon has hinted that Nacho Novo has fired up his Celtic players ahead of Tuesday night’s Old Firm game at Parkhead. After Rangers wrapped up their second successive Clydesdale Bank Premier League title win last week the little Spaniard blasted Celtic and former Hoops’ manager Tony Mowbray’s criticism of Walter Smith.

Rangers manager Walter Smith has played down comments made by Nacho Novo, insisting his remarks should have no bearing on the Old Firm derby. The Ibrox striker appeared to stoke up the tension ahead of Tuesday’s clash when he hit out at rivals Celtic and their former boss Tony Mowbray for his criticism of Smith.

Betting Tips;
Rangers have won the Scottish Premier League in a canter this season, but this is a derby where recent form never matters and looking at the odds that is bourne out by the betting. I would suggest that anything could happen but would go for an away win given the form and stats.

Champions League Betting Tips, 20-21 October

Champions League Tips

Champions League Tips by Carl Harris

Champions League football resumes midweek with English teams facing fixtures which look equally as tricky as they are important. There are plenty of betting opportunities, with special markets for the games which can be found at FreeBetsFinder.co.uk. Here we will look at the matches and try to win a few quid, with our Champions League football betting tips.

The fixtures are;

  • Liverpool v Lyon (Tues)
  • Rangers v Unirea Urziceni (Tues)
  • AZ v Arsenal (Tues)
  • CSKA Moscow v Man Utd (Wed)
  • Chelsea v Atletico Madrid (Wed)

Liverpool have had a shocking start to the season with four Premier League losses and are looking to bounce back from a Champions league defeat last time. Lyon have been the best French side for a few years but Liverpool should beat them.  At 4/5 there will be a few who will hesitate, rightly so, but Laying Lyon is my idea of a good bet.

Rooney may miss Moscow trip

Rooney may miss Moscow trip

Rangers look another team that some will hesitate before taking the odds-on. They are 5/6 to beat Unirea Urziceni, who I will sadly have to pronounce on Suntalk on Tuesday. I think Rangers look a bit too short any result is possible. They could win lose or draw and not surprise anyone. Not for me at 5/6, I will swerve this game.

Arsenal are 8/15 away at AZ and they should, and probably will win, but are 8/15 to do so. One for the multiples, but Arsenal should be banker material, the best bet of the week in the Champions League.

Manchester United will probably be without Wayne Rooney on Wednesday as they make the long trip to Moscow. They seem to be just doing enough this season, missing dare I say Ronaldo! But at Evens I am prepared to go with Sir Alex’s men to grind out yet another win. Certainly if you are backing Manchester United then double up with Arsenal on Tuesday.

Chelsea are strong favourites to beat Athletico Madrid who have had a nightmare start to their season. That said Chelsea have fluffed their lines with defeats at Wigan and Aston Villa but at home they are a tough team to beat. Though short odds I will be on Chelsea and they are another for the multiple.

Suggested midweek Champions League Treble, to win

  • Arsenal
  • Manchester United
  • Chelsea

Champions League Betting Tips, Tuesday 29th September

Tuesday's ties

Tuesday's ties

There is a big week of Champions League Betting this week on Tuesday and Wednesday. The British teams are in action and RacingDiary.co.uk takes you through the action with the best bets.

Fiorentina v Liverpool (Tuesday)

This should be a straight forward victory for Liverpool, who are a very good Even Money. Liverpool are in good form, having hammered Hull City 6-1 on Saturday. (You can watch these goals at footyfix.co.uk). Liverpool have a very strong record in the Champions League where as Fiorentina are not a major force, although they are doing fairly well in their domestic league but Liverpool should win. The reds have a habit of just doing enough in ties like this, take Liverpool to win.

Back Liverpool at Evens

Rangers v Sevilla (Tuesday)

Rangers host Sevilla at Ibrox. The odds are Rangers 13/5 Draw 5/2 Seville 11/10. In fairness I would side with Seville who should have the edge. Rangers though have a formidable atmosphere at Ibrox which may intimidate the Spanish side. I would though back Seville to win at 11/10.

Back Seville at 11/10.

Arsenal look red hot and should bag plenty of goals

Arsenal look red hot and should bag plenty of goals

Arsenal v Olympiakos (Tuesday)

Arsenal should coast to a victory at the Emirates. The odds reflect the one-sided nature of this tie. Arsenal 2/7 Draw 19/4 Olympiakos 12/1. Arsenal are probably one for the accumulator, Arsenal should win.

Weekend Football Preview and Betting Tips (9th-11th May)

Its Rangers V Celtic- The Old Firm at Ibrox

Its Rangers V Celtic- The Old Firm at Ibrox

Weekend Football Betting Preview..

After last week’s football betting tips yielded 7/8 and a nice treble, it is time again to review the weekend’s Premier League Football and list our top betting tips for you. I have also included a football tip for the top Scottish match this week, the Old Firm Derby at Ibrox where Rangers host Celtic in what promises to be a very good betting game.

Our mid-week Champions League football  betting tips yielded a good win for Manchester United and we can justifiably claim to have been robbed along with Chelsea when Barcelona drew at Chelsea with a late equalizer. Four penalty claims were turned down by referee Tom Henning Ovrebo (Norway) in an amazing and enthralling game.

Manchester United will now face Barcelon in the Champions League Final in Rome on Wednesday 27th May 2009, kick-off 7-45pm. Note it in your diaries!

Still we are in betting profit, nicely and we look for more profits this weekend as we try to match the superb football betting tips of the previous week.

This weekend’s Premier League fixtures are very attractive once again; Let us start by listing The Premier League Football Fixtures for the weekend of 9th,10th and 11th May 200 and give you a betting analysis and review of each Barclays Premier League, game plus the Old Firm Derby at Ibrox.

Saturday 9th May 2009

Barclays Premier League

  • Blackburn v Portsmouth 15.00
  • Bolton v Sunderland 15.00
  • Everton v Tottenham 15.00
  • Fulham v Aston Villa 15.00
  • Hull City v Stoke City 15.00
  • West Brom v Wigan Ath 15.00
  • West Ham v Liverpool 17.30

Clydesdale Bank Scottish Premier

  • Rangers v Celtic 12.30

Sunday 10th May 2009
Barclays Premier League

  • Arsenal v Chelsea 16.00
  • Man Utd v Man City 13.30

Monday 11th May 2009
Barclays Premier League

  • Newcastle v Middlesbrough 20.00

We are almost at the end of the season and as such there are always a few games that are meaningless and ones to avoid for betting purposes, but this weekend there are few if any that fall in to that category.

Saturday’s Matches

Blackburn v Porstmouth -3pm Saturday

This is one where there is little for both teams to play for, both being safe and looking to next season. Porstmouth are a poor side and I would suggest laying them, but realistically this is a No Bet Match.

William Hill Match Odds- Blackburn – Evens, Draw 11/5 Porstmouth 3/1

Bolton v Sunderland -3pm Saturday

This is a Must Win for Sunderland who need the points to pull clear of the drop zone. Sunderland’s fate rests in their own hands, but they have been very poor recently, not least the loss to West Brom 3-0. They were beaten by Everton in their last match. Bolton are Mid-Table which is a good season for them and they can play without pressure. I think Sunderland may get a draw, but can not see them winning this game.

William Hill Match Odds- Bolton – 23/10, Draw 11/5 Sunderland 5/2
I would prefer to have Bolton and the Draw on side and therefore will be laying Sunderland on Betfair.

betfair3Lay Sunderland on Betfair

Everton v Tottenham – Saturday 3pm

Everton are looking for a fifth place finish, it is worth £1m more than 6th. Spurs are slap bang in the middle of the table and as most teams are now looking to next season. Harry Redknapp will have a full season and Spurs will do better next term. I would suggest that Everton are a good bet. They have the FA Cup to look forward to and already it has been a good season for them. David Moyes will want that fifth place and players are playing for their FA Cup Final places.

William Hill Match Odds-Everton – 13/10, Draw- 11/5 Spurs -11/5

williamhill1Back Everton at 13/10 with William Hill

Fulham v Aston Villa – Saturday 3pm

Not too long ago this would have been a definite away win, but Roy Hodgeson has done a wonderful job at The Cottage. Fulham have only lost 4 from 17 home games and have won 10 of them. Their home form has been the story of their season. Villa have gone off the boil and despite being 6th in the Premier League I think they will struggle to win this one. I am taking Fulham to win this. Villa are suffering from a long season and Fulham are relaxed and can beat them.

William Hill Match Odds-Fulham – 13/8, Draw- 23/10 Villa -13/8

williamhill1

Back Fulham at 13/8 with William Hill

Hull City v Stoke City –Saturday 3pm

Hull are desperate for points, only just above the drop zone. Stoke have proved many people wrong and look safe. Hull will see this as a must win game. They will think that if they win this they are safe. Stoke have got 90% of their points at home, but Hull are on a downward spiral. The match odds are interesting;

William Hill Match Odds-Hull – 11/10, Draw- 11/5 Stoke -13/5

I think that Stoke getting an away win is not very likely. It that respect I advise Laying Stoke, so the draw and Hull are on side. A  draw looks the likely outcome.

betfair3Lay Stoke on Betfair

West Brom v Wigan- Saturday 3pm

West Brom are the worst team in the Premier League, officially, just look at the table. Wigan are a solid mid-table side and they live off picking up points against teams like West Brom. I would definitely Lay West Brom, but I would back Wigan at 2/1 every-time and think this is a great bet.

William Hill Match Odds-West Brom – 11/8, Draw- 9/4 Wigan -2/1

williamhill1

Back Wigan at 2/1 with William Hill

West Ham v Liverpool- Saturday 5.30pm (Setanta)

The first live game of the weekend sees Liverpool away at West Ham. Liverpool are second and have a mathematical if doubtful chance of winning the league. West Ham are not a bad team, sitting 7th but Liverpool should beat them. I think laying West Ham would be a good lay, but looking at the match odds…

William Hill Match Odds-West Ham- 5/1 Draw -3/1 Liverpool -8/15

You can not oppose Liverpool

williamhill1

Back Liverpool at 8/15 with William Hill

Rangers v Celtic- Saturday 12.30 (Setanta)

This is a huge game, they all are no matter what is at stake. Celtic sit top of teh SPL and Rangers 1 point behind. This could decide teh fate of this year’s title! So it is a monster game. Celtic will be happy with a draw, but neither set of fans want anything other than a win.

This is tight and I am not going to bet, but I think Celtic could get something, but this is not for the faint hearted. I would suggest that draw is the likely outcome.

William Hill Match Odds-Rangers- 13/10 Draw -23/10 Celtic 21/10

williamhill1

Back the Draw at 13/10 with William Hill

We will look at Sunday and Monday Matches separately.
