Frankel and White Moonstone Impress at Ascot

Carl Harris Looks Back at a Fascinating Saturday at AscotFrankel is the Real Deal!

There was plenty of hype surrounding Frankel before the Royal Lodge at Ascot and in the early stages the race was run at a crawl but turning for home Tom Queally decided to show just what his mount was made of. He hit the turbo button (which turned out to be a hyperspeed button) to go away and win by 10 lengths, hands and heels, to record a time of just under 1 min 42.

A review of Saturdays Races Above

White Moonstone also maintained her unbeaten record, under Frankie Dettori, winning in contrasting in style to Frankel a hard fought battle getting home by a neck. The time was slower than that recorded by Frankel, and given the way the race was run, suggests that Frankel is in fact the real deal. Bookmakers reacted swiftly and cut him to as low as 2 to 1 for the 2000 Guineas and the Derby, but Henry Cecil raised stamina concerns about the Epsom trip.

Frankie Dettori, Ascot’s main man won the feature handicap aboard Redford, following up his easy Gold cup when last week. Although I managed to get out other handicap unscathed, thanks to a small saver on the favourite, I am kicking myself for ignoring the downright obvious. Still there is no reason to complain, having seen a fabulous day of racing.

The feature race was of course the Queen Elizabeth II stakes which was, on paper, a showdown between 2000 Guineas winner Makfi and Rip Van Winkle (last year’s winner). Canford Cliffs missed the race, which was a big shame.

Having traded around 9 to 4 when the entries were made Makfi. traded around even money before the race (SP 11-10) ,Rip Van Winkle second favourite and plenty of betting ring support for Poets Voice, probably the Frankie factor. Paddock watchers reported Dettori’s mount to be the pick of the paddock with a Rip Van Winkle looking his usual imposing self and Makfi being as relaxed as always.

It was Frankie Dettori who won just beating Rip van Winkle, in a photo, aboard Poets Voice. Never under estimate Frankie Dettori at Ascot.

Frankel dominates Ante-Post Markets….

It has been almost 35 years since Henry Cecil last produced a 2000 Guineas winner,  but Ascot was left in little doubt that the Master of Warren Place holds all the aces for next year’s Classic following the victory of Frankel in the Royal Lodge this afternoon.

The son of Galileo put his unbeaten record on the line in the Group Two contest, but triumphed in the manner of his odds-on price –  annihilating the small field with an awesome display of acceleration.

William Hill reacted by hardening his odds further at the top of the Classics’ betting to 2-1 from 5-1 for the 2000 Guineas, and 7-2 from 10-1 for the Derby. Hills also quoted odds of 6-1 that the bay colt completes the Guineas/Derby double.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’That was quite simply one of the stand-out performances of the season. It wasn’t a field filled with tough opposition, but the manner of Frankel’s victory simply oozed class. We suspect that he may be more suited to the mile of the Guineas than the Derby, but as Sea the Stars proved, sometimes, regardless of trip, they’re simply just too good for the rest.’’

2000 Guineas 2011: 2-1 Frankel (from 5-1), 8-1 Saamidd, 10-1 Pathfork, Strong Suit, 14-1 Dream Ahead, 16-1 Casamento, Dunboyne Express, Peter Martins, Zoffany, 20-1 King Torus, Native Khan, 25-1 Elzaam, 33-1 Ecliptic, Formosina, Glor na Mara,  Libranno, Samuel Morse, Waiter’s Dream, Zaidan, 50-1 Toolain, Others available (EW 1/4 1,2,3)

Investec Derby 2011: 7-2 Frankel (from 10-1), 25-1 French Navy, Picture Editor, 50-1 Voodoo Prince

6-1 Frankel to win the 2000 Guineas & Derby

The Hitman on Saturday, 25 September

By Carl HarrisThe Hitman is back on Saturday with a look at the top class card at Ascot, can he shoot for the value? Free Horseracing Tips from The Hitman, Exclusive to Racing Diary (for now!)

For Me the QEII Is Over, But Sarasota Sunshine at 10/1 is a Bright Idea!

Readers of the website who took the advice earlier in the week and backed Makfi at the advised 9/4 can either bath in the value on what is now an odds-on shot, or do as I have an green up across the card and sit back and watch a good race.

The QEII would have been a fascinating showdown between the seasons to leading three-year-old milers, but realistically the favourite should prevail readily, but at odds-on there is no value to be found.

Of course everyone’s banker treble will be Frankel, Makfi and White Moonstone which I have to say looks rock solid, and certainly will rack up huge liabilities for the bookmakers. It doesn’t take a genius though to come up with that, however it will be great to see if the hype concerning the juveniles is justified. There is no way at this stage I can advise getting involved in the classic markets for next season, there are plenty of other racist types yet to be seen in public, but certainly it would be tremendous for the sport if we had another superstar as we had last year in the classic generation.

Frankel, Henry Cecil

How Good is Frankel?

So the big Ascot treble is on:

  • 2:30 Ascot, Frankel
  • 3:05 Ascot, White Moonstone
  • 4:15 Ascot, Makfi

The big betting the race of the day is the Totesport.com Challenge Cup (3:40) where Redford, last week’s Ayr Gold Cup winner, is sure to be popular with the punters. Frankie Dettori takes the ride again for Dandy Nicholls but with a six pound penalty and a step up to 7 furlongs I am prepared to take him on. The one I like sneaks in right at the bottom of a featherweight and has Johnny Murtagh in the saddle for Jeremy Noseda.

Sarasota Sunshine(3:40) is a consistent performer who has been in the first two in all of her four starts this season. This is her toughest test to date but with such a decent weight and the trainer who I think is one of the best there is definite value to be had at what is a solid each way price. Of course with 29 runners we need to have the run of the race but Johnny Murtagh is one of the best there is around here and we have the benefit of his services from the saddle. My advice is an each way bet on Sarasota Sunshine and Ascot on Saturday.

totesport.com

Rainfall (4:50) takes a significant drop in class here in the listed October stakes. Since winning at the Royal meeting she has found life and group 1 and group to level a little tough but this assignment should be absolutely perfect and with the King of Ascot, Frankie Dettori in the saddle there is no better man for the job. For me rainfall is actually, at the prices, the best bet of the day.

Frankie Dettorri rides for Godolphin

It is 14 years since Frankie Dettori rode all seven winners on today’s Ascot card and whilst there will not be a repeat of the Italian’s magnificent 7 this afternoon I consider Poet’s Voice (4.15) to represent excellent value in the feature QEII Stakes which has been slightly devalued by the absence of antepost favourite Canford Cliffs.

StanJames.com 2000 Guineas winner Makfi is likely to go off around evens and many will consider him a certainty given he easily disposed of the brilliant mare Goldikova at Deauville last time. That was a visually stunning display although I am convinced that the mare failed to give her running on the very soft ground.

Makfi had previously finished down the field over today’s C&D when disappointing in the St James’s Palace Stakes at the Royal meeting, and whilst connections suggested the colt was suffering from a throat infection at the time I would be loath to back the French raider at the forecast price given that unhappy experience.

Rip Van Winkle is bidding to become the first horse since Rose Bowl in 75/76 to win this great race back-to-back but he didn’t look to be crying out for a drop back in trip when well held by stablemate Cape Blanco in the Irish Champion Stakes over 10f last time. Indeed he hasn’t won at a mile since the corresponding race last year and he is readily overlooked.

Rip Van Winkle, heads to Ascot

Poet’s Voice was a juvenile I had plenty of time for last year but was a major disappointment in the first half of the season. I think Godolphin have found the key to the colt who has been held up in his last couple of starts and put up a cracking performance when turning the Celebration Mile into a procession at Goodwood last month. The time was excellent in the circumstances (soft ground) and I think he is peaking at the right time.

Queen Elizabeth II Stakes: (place terms: 1/4 the first 3); prices from Stan James

4-5       Makfi

9-4       Rip Van Winkle

13-2     Poet’s Voice

14        Hearts Of Fire

20        Beethoven

33        Red Jazz

40        Bushman

125      Air Chief Marshall

Frankel (2.30) is 6/1 favourite for the 2011 2000 Guineas and Derby with StanJames.com and cannot be opposed in the Royal Lodge Stakes. At this moment I favour Godolphin’s Saamidd for next year’s 2000 Guineas but I would not put anyone off having an antepost wager on the Henry Cecil-trained Frankel for next year’s Derby even at this stage.

Fellow Evertonian Martin Dwyer has had his season prematurely curtailed due to injury (unlike our side who haven’t got out the blocks yet) and I know he was looking forward to riding Theyskens’ Theory in the Fillies’ Mile. Champion jockey Ryan Moore takes over in the saddle and he is likely to try and make it a true test although White Moonstone (3.05) has got to be the recommendation after her brilliant win in the May Hill at Doncaster earlier in the month.

Unbeaten in three starts White Moonstone is currently 8/1 with StanJames.com for both the 2011 1000 Guineas and Oaks and those prices will contract if the Godolphin filly maintains her unbeaten record this afternoon.

The card opens with a 21-runner handicap over the round mile and luck in-running will play a big part. Sajjhaa will have her supporters after her recent Bath success but I hope on the revised terms Forest Crown (1.55) can return to winning ways having not had the run of the race last time.

The big betting race of the day is the Challenge Cup over 7f. Last weekend’s Ayr Gold Cup winner Redford is reunited with Frankie Dettori and the additional furlong will not trouble the Dandy Nicholls trained five-year-old. He looks to have a tremendous draw in stall 28 but he has never been the most consistent of animals and preference is for Mia’s Boy (3.40) who has been given a mid-season break and thoroughly deserves to win one of these valuable handicaps. His jockey Adam Beschizza is very good value for his 5lb claim and the yard had a welcome winner at Folkestone earlier in the week.

Antigua Sunrise (2.05) is a horse who had promised much but failed to deliver before a facile success at York last time and a 4lb rise in the weights doesn’t appear too harsh. Paul Hanagan takes over and the likelihood of soft ground at Haydock is no concern.

Makfi Backers Snaffle The Value

Richard Hannon junior believes the prospect of Canford Cliffs running at the Breeders’ Cup is a “long shot”. He will miss Saturdays big race and Makfi is now odds-on, hope you took our advice!

Free Royal Ascot Betting Tips

Canford Cliffs out of QE II

The Hannon camp were dealt a hammer blow with the news that the triple Group One winner would have to miss Saturday’s Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot. Now Makfi heads the market and is odds-on.

Despite reports of a scintillating gallop on Wednesday morning, the Sussex Stakes winner produced an unsatisfactory scope just hours before declaration time on Thursday morning.

Makfi has taken the expected mantle as QEII favourite following the disappointing news that Canford Cliffs will not line-up for the Group One event.

William Hill make the 2000 Guineas winner their 4/5 favourite following the news that Canford Cliffs provided an unsatisfactory final scope ahead of Saturday’s race, with defending champion Rip Van Winkle now 11-4 (from 7-2).

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’Racing fans have been denied one of the most mouth-watering rematches of the season with the late withdrawal of Canford Cliffs. Makfi now quite rightly takes the top honours in the betting, with Rip Van Winkle the biggest threat to a French victory.’’

Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (revised betting): 4-5 Makfi, 11-4 Rip Van Winkle, 8-1 Poet’s Voice, 14-1 Steinbeck, 16-1 Awzaan, Hearts Of Fire, Rio De La Plata, 25-1 Beethoven, 33-1 Bushman, Red Jazz,  150-1 Air Chief Marshall, Windsor Palace – (EW 1/5 1,2,3) – Cape Blanco not quoted

Bookmakers have started to shorten Makfi‘s odds for Saturday’s Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and the French raider is now challenging Canford Cliffs at the head of the market.

Hannon has had a great season with Canford Cliffs

The Richard Hannon-trained Canford Cliffs was originally the clear favourite but Coral now have the pair sharing that position at 13-8. They have met twice this season, with Mikel DelzanglesMakfi taking first blood in the 2000 Guineas, with Canford Cliffs in third, but the British colt levelled when Maki flopped in the St James’s Palace Stakes. While Canford Cliffs went on to land the Sussex Stakes, Makfi returned to form in the Prix Jacques le Marois and appears to be thriving at home.

We did say that this was closer than the initial odds suggested, but much will rely on the ground, of that there is no doubt. Makfi favours easier going whilst the current good, good to firm in places, will suit Canford Cliffs down to the ground. Many will turn to the St James’s Palace stakes at Ascot where Canford Cliffs was an impressive winner. It must be pointed out that Makfi had an infection and as such that form cannot be taken at face value.

Both these colts are exceptional group 1 performers, both have one 2000 Guineas and they are the best three-year-old milers. There is no doubt however that at 9-4 Makfi is the best value of the two, but the market is now correcting itself and in my view it is 7-4 each of two, with Rip Van Winkle by no means out of it, a top class performer in his own right.

Makfi beating Goldikova last time is frightening form…..

What a race we have in prospect on Saturday, I can’t wait!

Paddy has seen further money for French raider Makfi, who is now 15-8 (from 2), for Saturday’s Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot, while Richard Hannon’s Canford Cliffs is continuing on the drift to 6-4f (from 11-8f). One of Godolphin’s potential challengers Poet’s Voice has also attracted cash and is 12 (from 16).

Paddy Power said: “Canford Cliffs has been on the drift since we opened our book on Monday, while Makfi has been the complete opposite and if this continues, I can see the pair going off almost joint favourites on Saturday.”

Canford Cliffs even money favourite for QEII

Canford Cliffs is the even money favourite with totesport to win Saturday’s Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot after 14 entries were revealed at the six-day stage.

Hannon has had a great season with Canford Cliffs

Richard Hannon’s three-year-old was beaten by Makfi in the 2000 Guineas but turned the tables in no uncertain terms when the pair clashed in the St James’ Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Makfi has since bounced back to form with an authoritative victory in the Prix Jacques Marois at Deauville and is the 9/4 second-favourite for the race with last year’s winner Rip Van Winkle next in the market at 7/2. totesport.com Celebration Mile winner Poet’s Voice has been supplemented for the race at a cost of £20,000 and is a 16/1 shot.

‘Canford Cliffs holds all the aces ahead of the QEII having beaten both Makfi and Rip Van Winkle earlier on in the season but both those horses have since won at the top level so we should be in for an absolute cracker at Ascot on Saturday,’ said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

Redford could bid for a big-race double in the space of a week after being left in the totesport.com Challenge Cup at Ascot on Saturday and the sponsors make him the 7/1 favourite to add to his Ayr Gold Cup victory.

Doncaster winner Dever Dream is next in the market at 8/1 whilst Acrostic, Axiom and Kakatosi are all 12/1 shots.

Makfi to Take On Canford Cliffs in QEII

Who is the best three year-old miler? We will find out in Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on Saturday. But does it depend on the ground?

2000 Guineas Betting

Canford Cliffs Irish 2000 Guineas Winner

Makfi will lock horns once again with Richard Hannon’s Canford Cliffs. Since Newmarket, Canford Cliffs has won the Irish Guineas, the St James’s Palace Stakes – a race in which Makfi disappointed – and the Sussex Stakes.

Makfi shrugged off his Ascot performance, however, by beating Freddie Head’s 10-time Group One-winner Goldikova in the Prix Jacques le Marois. A deal has already been done that will see Makfi stand at Tweenhills Stud in Gloucestershire next year.

Makfi won the Guineas but didn’t seen to be right when he last met Canford Cliffs. He showed his class when winning in a Group 1 last time. In my view this depends on the ground, the softer the better for Makfi, but whatever happens this is going to be exciting. Canford Cliffs loves Ascot and it suits him well, so here we go, let’s get it on!

Cape Blanco is a surprise name among 14 six-day entries for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot. Aidan O’Brien’s charge won the Tattersalls Millions Irish Champion Stakes on his most recent start and is joined in the field for Saturday’s Group One showpiece by stablemates Rip Van Winkle, Windsor Palace, Air Chief Marshall, Beethoven and Steinbeck. The Godolphin team have also left Rio De La Plata in while Bushman, Awzaan, Hearts Of Fire and Red Jazz complete the field.

Stan James make Canford Cliffs their 6/5 favourite for the Sony sponsored QEII at Ascot on Saturday after 14 were entered at today’s five-day stage.

Head of PR Charlie McCann: ” Canford Cliffs has been given a break since beating Rip Van Winkle a neck in the Sussex Stakes at the end of July. Three-year-olds have won three of the last four renewals of this great race and the classic generation have a very strong hand again this year with Guineas winners Makfi and Canford Cliffs joined by the progressive Celebration Mile winner Poet’s Voice. Rip Van Winkle will be looking to become the first horse to win the race back-to-back since Rose Bowl in the 70s but can he reverse Goodwood form with the Hannon ace?”

Mastercraftsman Out of QEII

As expected, Mastercraftsman has been declared a non-runner for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on Saturday.

Mastercraftsman is a non-runner

Aidan O’Brien warned he was only in as a precaution should Rip Van Winkle miss the race. Clearly Rip Van Winkle is fine and will run against Delegator in the showpiece.

Mastercraftsman was officially taken out of the Ascot race on Friday evening.

Saturdays Horseracing Tips, 26th September

By Carl Harris

By Carl Harris

A great day at Ascot with the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes taking centre stage. There are some very good races at Ascot which is where I have decided to focus my efforts today. There are decent cards at Haydock and Chester as well as jumps racing at Market Rasen. The day is completed by an all-weather card under the lights at Kempton.

The card at Ascot is of very high quality, (pattern races in bold);

1:55 Deloitte Rosemary Handicap (fillies’ Listed) (3yo+, Class 1, 1m, 18 runners)
2:30 Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes (c&g) (group 2) (2yo, Class 1, 1m, 11 runners)
3:05 Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile (group 1) (2yo, Class 1, 1m, 9 runners)
3:40 Totesport.com Challenge Cup Heritage Handicap (3yo+, Class 2, 7f, 29 runners)
4:15 Queen Elizabeth Ii Stakes (sponsored By Sony) (group 1) (3yo+, Class 1, 1m, 5 runners)
4:50 Miles & Morrison October Stakes (fillies’ Listed) (3yo+, Class 1, 7f, 12 runners)
5:25 Tabac Gordon Carter Handicap (3yo+, Class 3, 2m, 10 runners)

2.30 Ascot- Frozen Power, Win

The Royal Lodge is an important two year-old race and as usual has attracted a quality field. The stand out bet in Frozen Power (2.30) for Frankie Dettori and Godolphin. Although this is a step up in class he won a decent listed race at Deauville with the mile trip looking tailor made for the son of Oasis Dream. I think this will be another one for Godolphin who have a host of decent two year-olds. Frozen Power can kick off the day with a winner for us.

Goldolphin in form...

Goldolphin in form...

3.05 Ascot- Long Lashes, Win

It is Godolphin and Frankie Dettori who I think will land the fillies mile with Long Lashes (3.05). This race was won by Rainbow View last year who was the winter favourite for the 1000 Guineas, an important race. I am prepared to five her another chance, down in grade after finishing fourth in a group one last time out at the Curragh, which was on heavy ground which didn’t suit. Back on a sound surface Long Lashes will run better and I take her to win the fillies mile.

4.15 Ascot- Rip Van Winkle, Win

The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes is a small but select field with Ballydoyle going head to head with Godolphin. Rip Van Winkle (4.15) takes on Godolphin, both of whom won at Goodwood last time out. Rip Van Winkle was behind Delegator in the 2000 Guineas but was short of a run that day and has run with credit in group one races all season, winning the Sussex Stakes last time out. That was in a very good time and I think he is now a better horse than Delegator. Rip Van Winkle is my confident selection for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

SMALLEST FIELD FOR TEN YEARS TO LINE-UP IN SATURDAY’S QEII

Just five acceptors remain in the Sony QEII Stakes at Ascot, with just four likely to line-up in the Group One contest on Saturday.

Rip Van Winkle

Rip Van Winkle

Not since the incredible Dubai Millenium prevailed back in 1999 has a field of four lined-up in the famous race, but just a quartet of runners will enter the stalls after reducing from the ten that remained in at the five-day stage.

Rip Van Winkle – favourite with William Hill since betting opened on Monday- was highlighted by his trainer as a possible defector from the QEII after a recurrence of foot problems late last month, but has remained in the race thus far. Should the son of Galileo fail to line-up, stable-mate Mastercraftsman will replace him and make his first return to eight-furlongs since his win in the St James’s Palace Stakes at the Royal Meeting.

William Hill now offer 5-6 about Rip Van Winkle – who won his first starts a three-year-old when winning the Sussex Stakes last time out, and 6-1 about his stable-mate Mastercraftsman.

Delegator – representing a resurgent Godolphin is available at 11-4, with Moulin winner Aqlaam a 7-1 chance for trainer William Haggas.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’

Ballydoyle have performed the age-old trick of hedging their bets by declaring Mastercraftsman and Rip Van Winkle, knowing that the favourite has experienced some niggles this season. Their main issue will definitely lie with the Godolphin challenge though, who are experiencing a resurrection of epic proportion, and will saddle the talented Delegator.’’

The Sweet Solera winner tops a tight betting market as 11/.4 favourite, with You’ll Be Mine – a 20/1 co-favourite for the Oaks- the 7/2 second-favourite for Saturday’s race.

The daughter of high-class mare Quarter Moon won her maiden on her second start but faces a hugh step-up in class from her win at The Curragh earlier this month.

Clive Brittain saddles 5-1 third-favourite Hibaayib who is still to get off the mark but boasts some fair form including a second in the May Hill Stakes a fortnight ago.

John Gosden – who saddled Rainbow View to take last year’s renewal will send 10-1 chance Dyna Waltz to post who finished second to Oak’s favourite Seta in her second start at Newmarket.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’

This looks to be one of the most open Fillies’ Mile renewals for some time, and a complete conundrum for punters. Godolphin’s current hot steak, coupled with Long Lashes’s Group form makes her our tentative favourite, but you can actually make a case for any of the nine in the field.’’
