GORDON Strachan for Portsmouth?

Strachan for Pompey?

Strachan for Pompey?

GORDON Strachan is the 5/4 favourite to replace Paul Hart if the Portsmouth boss gets the boot, bookies said yesterday (Weds).

Hart presided over the club’s first league win at the weekend but it followed seven straight defeats for the South Coast side.

And Ladbrokes reckon former Celtic and Southampton manager Strachan could head the queue if the new owners make a move. The firm are also quoting 5/1 about Alan Curbishley and make Harry Redknapp an unlikely 50/1 for a third stint at the club.

Spokesman Robin Hutchison said: “Despite his Saints connections Strachan looks one of the more eligible candidates currently available.”

GRANT 5/2 TO TAKE HART’S JOB AT POMPEY

WITH Avram Grant being parachuted into struggling Portsmouth, William Hill offer 5/2 that the former Chelsea boss will have taken over as manager on the last day of the season – and make Hart a 6/5 chance still to be in charge then.’Having a high profile personality who has done the job someone else is currently doing, but at a much higher level, brought in in close proximity to the incumbent would not seem to make for an ideal working relationship, despite the way in which it will undoubtedly be presented to the world’ said Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe.

Hills also offer 4/6 that EITHER Grant or Hart will be boss on the last day of the campaign, 11/10 that it will be someone else.

High profile bosses under threat, but: WHO’LL GO FIRST – KEANE, BARNES OR McPARLAND?

WILLIAM HILL have opened a book on which of the Football League’s three highest profile managers at the start of the season will be leaving their club first as Roy Keane; John Barnes and Ian McParland all face pressure at Ipswich, Tranmere and Notts County respectively.

Hills make the former England star Barnes Even money favourite to be the first of the three to depart, with McParland 7/4 to be on his way from County first, with Keane 11/4 to be off before the other two.

‘The three are all under severe pressure already, Keane and Barnes because their teams can’t seem to win matches and McParland because many suspect a more glamorous, media-friendly replacement is being lined up’ said Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe.

HILLS: to See Season Out?

John Barnes – 7/4 YES; 2/5 NO

Ian McParland- 7/4 YES; 2/5 NO

Roy Keane- 6/5 YES; 8/13 NO

**WEST BROM are 9/4 favourites to win the Championship with Hills who make Newcastle 11/4 with Middlesbro 9/2 – these three relegated clubs are 16/1 to be the three who win promotion.

CHELSEA STILL TITLE FAVOURITE

DESPITE losing for the first time, Chelsea are still favourites to win the Premiership title with William Hill who have lengthened them from 11/10 to 7/4 and make Manchester United 15/8 second favourites, also offering 11/2 Liverpool; 7/1 Arsenal; 10/1 Man City; 50 Spurs.

‘Chelsea’s defeat was the best result of the season so far for us – we won back the millions we lost through Michael Owen’s late Man U winner last week’ said Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe.

Pompey 7/1 to set all time Prem points low:

WILL POMPEY BE HART-BROKEN BEFORE HULL BROWNED OFF?

PHIL BROWN is 8/11 no longer to be Hull boss on the last day of the season with William Hill – but he is only second favourite to be the first Prem boss of the season to leave his club – with Hils making Pompey’s Paul Hart 10/11 to be the first to go. ‘Hart has an even worse record than Brown this season with seven straight defeats and doesn’t even have the defence that but for him his side wouldn’t even be in the Premiership’ said Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe.

Hills make Pompey manager Paul Hart 1/ 2 to leave the club before the end of the season and offer 6/4 that Hart will still be there at the end of the campaign; Hills make Portsmouth 7/1 to end the season with 10 or fewer points, and offer 8/13 that they end the camapign with 19 or more points; 13/8 between 12 and 18 inclusive. ‘Everyone seems to think Portsmouth have fewer points than their performances deserve – but as yet points are not awarded for being deserving as far as I am aware’ said Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe.

Sunderland can Save Themselves at Portsmouth Tonight (18th May)

Lay Pompey at Home

Lay Pompey at Home

Portsmouth v Sunderland – 8pm SkySports

Make no mistake this is a game between 2 dire teams. They are both only not in the drop zone because there are 4 worse teams than them in the Premier League. Portsmouth are at home, but Sunderland seem to have the edge of late.

That said they are not doing very well and I think this game will end in a draw, which is probably going to be good enough for both teams. I would suggest though that they bet to place tonight is to Lay Pompey at home. The odds are ;

Portsmouth – 11/8
Sunderland- 2/1
Draw – 11/5

Pompey are poor and scoring goals is their problem. Sunderland are no better but they do seem to have, on a good day a bit more options up front. On balance a dull game in prospect that will likely end 0-0 but Sunderland may nick one and therefore we should Lay The home side.

Newcastle v Portsmouth (Monday 8pm Setanta Sports)

I posted this on Friday as I previewed the weekend football. The best of the day on Saturday was Chelsea at 10-11 who won, but the bet of the whole weekend I think is Newcastle who host Portsmouth. Newcastle are desperate for points and are  11/10 with  Boyle Sports at home to a team who have more or less nothing to play for, being just about safe in the Premiership.

Get On Newcastle at 11/10 With BoyleSports

Newcastle will have the passionate St. James’ Park faithful in full voice and the battling Geordies will do me. Michael Owen has been out of form but he remains confident he can score the goals which will rescue Newcastle’s season. Alan Shearer will no doubt have spoken to the fellow striker.

Chelsea and Man Utd Should Both Win

Drogba - five goals in last four games

Drogba - five goals in last four games

Manchester United v Portsmouth – 8pm

The title is Manchester United‘s to win now, following Liverpool’s 4-4 draw with Arsenal last night. The Champions will need to play better than they did against Everton if they are to win the league with the minimum of fuss. Tonight they face Portsmouth at Old Trafford and surely must win this one.

United were coasting to yet another Premier League crown before being beaten 4-1 by Liverpool and then remarkably falling foul of Fulham. They then managed last gasp wins against Villa and Sunderland ,so it would be fair to say that United are not in the best league form. But they should beat Portsmouth who have had a roller-coaster season, first the departure of Redknapp to Spurs, then the sacking on Tony Adams and then the appointment of Paul Hart. They now look safe and as such have nothing left to play for this season after their 1-0 win at the weekend put them six points clear of the drop zone. United are due a return to commanding league form and could thrash Portsmouth tonight.

United fans will certainly be looking for a better performance from Berbatov, but I would not be lumping on him at 5/1 to score first. I will settle for backing United to win the game.

Man Utd are a 1/4 chance to win the game, but better value is to be had by backing Utd to win to nil at 4/5 with Blue Square.

Chelsea v Everton – 8pm

Both teams were engaged in FA Cup Semi-Final Action at the weekend and will meet tonight in the league for what is a rehearsal for the FA Cup Final. Chelsea played well and beat Arsenal, whereas Everton did not play well and won on Penalties against a weakened Manchester United. Although Chelsea only have a remote chance of winning the league there is every reason to make sure they win this game, not least the imp[act that tonight’s result will have on hearts and minds in the cup final!

Chelsea are a different team under Guus Hiddink and his arrival has sparked Didier Drogba in to action. He is on fire at the moment and was on target once again at Wembley, netting the winner to make it five goals in four games. Drogba is awesome in this mood and will present a totally different proposition for the Everton defence than Berbatov managed on Saturday. Everton’s recent away form has been moderate having only managed a draw with Newcastle, Blackburn and Villa and also suffering a 2-1 defeat at Portsmouth in their last four away matches. I am struggling to find any reason why Chelsea should not win this one and keep a clean sheet too.

Chelsea are 4/9 to win the game (generally) and are 6/5 (Blue Sq) to win to nil.
