Eric Has Bookies In a Pickle

Ladbrokes have paid out to punters who backed roly-poly MP Eric Pickles to be spotted in a curry house during the Conservative Party Conference.

Pickles tweeted a photograph (wide-angle lens) of himself in a Birmingham curry house named Love Me Tandor and urged Ladbrokes, who offered 5-6 about him being photographed in a restaurant, to pay out. The larger-than-life Tory MP has more than 10,000 followers on Twitter, most of whom follow him in the forlorn hope of left-overs.

David Williams of Ladbrokes said: “Eric has left us needing smelling salts. His curry antics have cost us a small fortune and we’re feeling a bit fragile. Punters will be ordering extra popadums and raising a toast to the big man.”

Best Seller Blair?

TONY BLAIR‘s new book is 1/50 to sell more copies in the first week copies than Peter Mandelson’s The Third Man, according to Ladbrokes. The bookies offer even money about “A Journey” selling more than 200,000 copies this year.

David Williams from Ladbrokes said: “The frenzy surrounding Blair’s book has been enormous. He’s still got huge box-office appeal and we’re convinced it’s going to carry on flying off the bookshelves.”

Ed Miliband Lands First Blow In Leadership Race

YOU BET ED MILIBAND HAS STOLEN MARCH OVER RIVALS

Ed Miliband yesterday powered ahead of his brother in the Labour leadership contest by becoming the first contender to get enough nominations to run for the job.

The ex-Environment Secretary has the support of 35 Labour MPs, with brother David on 21. Ed Balls has four and Andy Burnham one while John McDonnell and Diane Abbott have yet to reveal names.

ED MILIBAND IS THE FIRST Labour Leader contender to chalk up the number of nominations he needs to cement his place in the race, and William Hill have cut his odds from 5/2 to 9/4 as a result, although brother David remains odds on favourite at 8/15. ‘Ed’s odds have shortened significantly since he put his name forward, at which point he was as long as a 5/1 chance’ said Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe.

Hills also offer 7/1 Andy Burnham; 9/1 Ed Balls; 25/1 Diane Abbott; 66/1 John McDonnell.

Political Betting Round-Up

“David Miliband’s once vice like grip on favouritism is weakening with every day that passes.”

The bookies offer 7/4 about the next General Election taking place in 2015 or later.

VAT Increase On the Cards?

George Osborne has insisted he could cut taxes and the deficit without raising VAT. The new Chancellor tried to see off Labour claims that he would be forced into an urgent tax rise to make his sums add up, during the election campaign. Bookies however think VAT will rise under the government.

Gordon Brown Resigns, David Miliband Odds On To Succeed Him

Gordon Brown has said he will step down as party leader as Nick Clegg asks for talks between Labour and the Liberal Democrats.

In a statement outside Downing Street, Mr Brown said he had “no desire to stay in my position longer than needed” and would leave by the party conference in September. He said he will ask the Labour Party to begin the process for a leadership election but that he will not stand or intervene. The plan seems to be that this will make it easier for the Lib Dems to do a deal with the Lib Dems. It has repeatedly been said that Clegg finds real difficult to deal with the current PM.

Stan James make David Miliband their 5/6 favourite to be the next leader of the Labour Party following the announcement of the resignation of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Political Betting Podcast, Monday 10 May

Four days after the General Election we still have no new Government and Prime Minister in the UK.  Nick Clegg has said he wants to reach a deal with the Tories “as soon as possible” as his team meets the Conservatives’ negotiators at the Cabinet Office.

So what does this mean for the betting markets?

David Cameron has shortened to just 1/6 to be in Downing Street on June 6. Gordon Brown‘s efforts to remain in power appear to be on the slide – and the bookies have pushed his odds out to 6/1. And punters are confident that Cameron can complete the necessary negotiations to see him finally take power.

David Williams of Ladbrokes said: “Amidst all the uncertainty punters seem certain of only one thing – and that is the firm belief that Cameron will be in Downing Street within the month.”

The odds have drifted out to 7/4 (from 6/4) on another General Election being called this year. And the odds have halved to just 4/1 (from 8/1) that the next trip to the polls will come in 2012.

David Miliband remains the red hot even money favourite to replace Gordon Brown as the next leader of the Labour party.
