Poquelin takes on Long Run

It is great to have jumping back, we certainly have the weather for it! The big races this weekend are the Greatwood Hurdle and The Paddy Power Gold Cup, fantastic stuff to say the least!

12:50 Cheltenham Titan De Sarti , Win. If this is a Triumph Hurdle trial then look no further than Nicky Henderson who seems to farm the Triumph Hurdle. He arrives having won a pair of AQPS races in France and his reputation is such that bookmakers are already quoting him as one of the favourites for the Triumph, despite the fact he’s yet to jump an obstacle in public. Encouragingly, Nicky Henderson reports the horse to be ‘extremely sharp’ at home and he could prove a class apart.

1:20 Cheltenham Wayward Price, Win. I couldn’t believe how easy this one won last time out, and certainly looks a type to follow. That will certainly be tested here in what looks a decent race. A good hurdler he has taken to fences well and should win here easily.

2:35 Cheltenham, Mad Max, Win. I think this is a good race with good horses like Poquelin and Long Run with reports that Long Run has improved out of hand over the winter. That said he will have to to carry the weight to land what to say the least is a competitive race, I think Poquelin will be there at the end and so too Mad Max, who is huge and could be a very decent chaser, on a good mark here too. With Barry Geraghty on Mad Max I favour him of the two Henderson runners. Get some value with Mad Max.

Good luck.

Cheltenham Festival 2010

Very Impressive Dunguib in 2009- is Cue Card the New Dunguib

1:50 Cheltenham Cue Card, Win. The Champion Bumper Winner made a great start to his hurdling career last time out at Aintree and looked the real deal, prompting calls for him to run on the Champion. Dunguib all over again. He will certainly run at Cheltenham in March, my view is in the Supreme Novice Hurdle. He should hose in here and it is only a question of price, make no mistake he is a very good horse and will I predict win readily here.

3:00 Cheltenham Joe Lively, Win. The cross county chase at Cheltenham is a specialism of Enda Bolger but I think Colin Tizzard can take this with Joe Lively who is a decent horse who could take to this. Not a big betting event for me but its all about value and this for me is value against the favourite.

4:05 Cheltenham Time For Rupert, Win. For my money this one is better than the rest, he hasn’t been outside the first three in three starts at the track. His most recent second to the top-class Big Buck’s resulted in the handicapper rating him 166, a figure which if translated to this race would make him hard to beat indeed. I make this my best bet of the day.

Saturday is the Paddy power Gold Cup, see you there!

Can Long Run Win The Paddy Power Gold Cup?

Long Run will face 19 rivals as he bids to get his season off to a winning start in Saturday’s Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

Cheltenham Festival Betting Tips

Poquelin takes on Long Run

Nicky Henderson‘s youngster suffered his first defeat in Britain in the RSA Chase at the Festival and reappears over a shorter trip. He will once again be ridden by amateur jockey Sam Waley-Cohen. Henderson also runs Aintree winner Mad Max, who will be ridden by Barry Geraghty.

Poquelin, last year’s runner-up, will carry top weight although conditional jockey Ian Popham takes 5lb off his back. Paul Nicholls, who is still searching for his first win in the race, also has Haldon Gold Cup winner Tchico Polos and Gwanako.

Nigel Twiston-Davies is another trainer with multiple entries as he fields Little Josh, who dead-heated with Weird Al on his comeback, as well as Pigeon Island and Rory Boy who are both out of the handicap.

Irish interests are held by the JP McManus-owned duo of Finger Onthe Pulse, trained by Tom Taaffe and Dancing Tornado, trained by Michael Hourigan. McManus’ silks will also be carried by Jonjo O’Neill’s Can’t Buy Time and Sunnyhillboy. Catch Me also represents Ireland, running out of last year’s winning stable of Edward O’Grady while Noel Glynn’s Gonebeyondrecall also runs.

Bob Buckler’s The Sawyer has been the subject of market support in recent days while David Pipe’s Festival winner Great Endeavour is another to have been strong in the ante-post market.

O’Grady Hopeful More Than Confident Ahead Of Paddy Power

Edward O’Grady, who last year saddled Tranquil Sea to become the first Irish-trained Paddy Power Gold Cup winner for 29 years, is hopeful rather than confident as he attempts to repeat the feat in Saturday’s £150,000 feature courtesy of Catch Me, who is an 8-1 chance with Paddy Power.

Racing at Cheltenham

The eight-year-old warmed up for his big engagement with a third behind Captain Cee Bee in the Grade 3 Poplar Square Chase at Naas last month, which is the same race that Tranquil Sea competed in, albeit he was victorious, before going on to Paddy Power immortality.

The Co Tipperary trainer said: “Catch Me goes for the Paddy Power Gold Cup, but while he has come out of the Naas race well and we’re happy with him, I thought that the race was uncompetitive and inconclusive.

“It was uncompetitive in that there were only four runners and it just wasn’t anything as good as last year. Of course the winner is a very decent horse, it was just the way that the race was run.

“He has been a great servant who has suffered a few misfortunes but I feel that he has retained his ability and I am hoping to see it on Saturday or sometime soon. At this stage of his career, he is probably a similar type to Tranquil Sea, but it was difficult to be confident after the trial. I think that we have to be no more than hopeful rather than confident going into the Paddy Power, I suppose simply because the trial was inconclusive.”

RSA Chase third Long Run is Paddy Power’s 100-30 favourite, having been trimmed in from 7-2 yesterday, while David Pipe’s Byrne Group Plate hero Great Endeavour is a 4-1 shot with the universe’s friendliest bookie.

Meanwhile Paddy Power has opened a book on who will be the leading rider over the three days of the Paddy Power Meeting and installed Noel Fehily and Richard Johnson as 5-2 joint-favourites.

Paddy Power himself said: “Ruby Walsh’s misfortune has been Noel Fehily’s gain and champion trainer Paul Nicholls has provided him with some wonderful rides at the Paddy Power Meeting this weekend.

“Noel’s rides are likely to include Tchico Polos, who looks to have a lively chance in the Paddy Power Gold Cup as well as Sanctuaire, who obviously has a favourite’s chance in the Greatwood Hurdle the following day.”

Ante-post favourite Sanctuaire heads 26 horses left in the Greatwood Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham on Sunday. The four-year-old has won two of his three starts for trainerPaul Nicholls and heads the market at 5/1 with Manyriverstocross rated a 6/1 shot by totesport.

Paddy Power Extend Cheltenham Sponsorship

Cheltenham Racecourse today announced that leading bookmaker Paddy Power is to back The Paddy Power Gold Cup and two other races at The Open meeting for a further three years until 2012.

The Open, which takes place from 12th to 14th November in 2010, is the highlight of the first half of the Jump racing season and has grown significantly in profile with the backing of Paddy Power. Since Paddy Power’s backing attendances have risen significantly to around 70,000 over the three days and the event is now the third biggest meeting of the Jump racing season after The Festival at Cheltenham and Aintree’s Grand National meetings.

The deal includes The Paddy Power Gold Cup, Friday’s paddypower.com Handicap Chase and Sunday’s Paddy Power Intermediate Handicap Hurdle, in addition to joint marketing and commercial initiatives, including a £10 free bet for online ticket purchasers who are not already Paddy Power customers (terms and conditions apply).

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the Paddy Power Gold Cup and Paddy Power plan to mark the golden moment with more of the fun and eye-catching initiatives that have helped to make the meeting the success it is today. The racecourse also has exciting plans to mark the occasion, including a special offer for online customers who book in September for Paddy Power Gold Cup Day. Those customers will have a chance to get their money back if AP McCoy rides the winner of the big race. More details are available on the Cheltenham website at www.cheltenham.co.uk

Paddy Power himself said: “Paddy Power has sponsored at the Paddy Power Gold Cup since 2003 and our renewal for a further three years will take our successful partnership to ten years. The agreement underpins Paddy Power’s continued commitment to racing in a time of adversity for the industry and we’re ecstatic to be part of an extremely rare good news story concerning racing sponsorship, bucking the recent trend of so many others pulling the plug on their support.

“I’m delighted that we will continue to feature at the best racecourse in the world. We have a terrific working relationship with Cheltenham and our combined efforts have established the meeting as one of the most enjoyable ‘must-do’ events in the racing calendar. Just like the thousands of racegoers that join us for the three days of top class Jump racing, I wouldn’t want it any other way.”

Peter McNeile, Director of Sponsorship, Cheltenham Racecourse, added: “The Open has continued its growth over the past few years thanks in no small part to the energy that Paddy Power has put behind their sponsorship. We’re grateful for that and the renewal of this deal shows that there is still a keen interest in the sport of Jump racing, especially here at Cheltenham.”

Saturdays Horseracing Tips, 14th November

By Carl Harris

By Carl Harris

This Saturday at Cheltenham, the Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase day is a very special one with a very good quality card.

This year is no exception. There will be huge crowds gathers to cheer on their fancies but sadly I will not be amongst them, confined to my sick bed, although I feel absolutely fine. I reckon a few extra quid will be just what the Doctor ordered!

We have already had a good luck at the Paddy Power Gold Cup, recommending a win and an each-way option. Certainly Bible Lord is worth looking at, in my view. Here is the card at Cheltenham on Saturday;

  • 12:50 Prestbury Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle (grade 2) (Class 1, 2m 110y, 9 runners)
  • 13:20 Ultima Frontrunner In It Solutions Novices’ Chase (5yo+, Class 2, 3m 110y, 3 runners)
  • 13:55 Servo Trophy Handicap Chase (grade 3) (4yo+, Class 1, 3m 3f 110y, 12 runners)
  • 14:35 Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase (grade 3 Handicap) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m 4f 110y, 20 runners)
  • 15:10 Jardine Lloyd Thompson Handicap Hurdle (listed) (4yo+, Class 1, 3m 1f 110y, 12 runners)
  • 15:45 Ultima Business Solutions Novices’ Handicap Hurdle (3yo+, Class 3, 2m 110y, 13 runners)

The card is choc full of quality and interesting angles. All bets today will be at Cheltenham;

Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham

12:50 Barizan, Win

Tony McCoy and Evan Williams have formed a winning alliance with Barizan (13:55) with the young hurdler having won five of his six races since being acquired from John Oxx. Although this is his biggest test to date it is one he should be up to, certainly if he is to fulfil the ambitions set out by his trainer. One of the best bets on the card in my view.

13:20 Petitfour, Win

This has cut up badly and is a bit of a no contest as a betting medium. Petitfour (13:20) should win, will be a short price to do so and is not a race I would suggest getting involved, unless you want to oppose the favourite, which you can do at your own risk, but at a low risk.

13:55 Miko De Beauchene, Win

Miko De Beauchene (13:55) makes his first start for Venitia Williams having been a fixture of the Alner stable in recent seasons. This is a competitive handicap chase, won last year by Joe Lively, which should provide punters with plenty of excitement. I am not suggesting that Venitia Williams is any better a trainer than Robert Alner but it is quite often the case that a change of scenery has a positive effect on a horse. There is the ability there and in my view worth taking a chance with here.

The Paddy power Gold Cup is at 2:35. Click here for a full preview. Suggested bets;

  • Tarotino- win
  • Bible Lord- win and place

15:10 Andytown, Win

henerson trains Andytown

Henderson trains Andytown

Andytown (15:10) is a solid bet in my view representing Tony McCoy and Nicky Henderson. Last seen at Aintree when running disappointingly after such a great day at Cheltenham after winning the Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle. He will not be the first and certainly not the last to run flat at Aintree after Cheltenham. It is not terminal and I expect him to bounce back here off the same mark as he ran from in Liverpool.

15:45 Alazam, Win

Not a race I would be looking to get heavily involved with but from a form point of view Alazam (15:45) is worth giving another chance. He was beaten at long odds-on by Mohanad who franked that form recently by finishing second in a decent listed event at Wetherby. Layers may look to get him again so the price, as Brucie used to say, might be right!

The best of my best today at Cheltenham are;

  • 12:50 Barizan, Win
  • 14:35 Bible Lord, win and Place
  • 15:10 Andytown, Win

Paddy Power Gold Cup Preview- Saturday 14 November

Paddy Power put a lot in to sponsoring this race, and have produced much to assist the press in covering it. We still though have to find the winner, but I found Paddy Power’s blog post about the race of huge interest, having access to some of the big names associated with the race.

Paddy Power Cheltenham Gold Cup

Paddy Power Cheltenham Gold Cup

After his stunning run of success through last season, if Paul Nicholls trained a chicken to run in the Paddy Power Gold Cup, it would probably head the betting. Luckily, he’s gone the more conventional route with Silverburn seen as his most likely chance of landing the first National Hunt classic of the season.

The Champion Trainer has already mapped out a season long course for the 7 year old with the Paddy Power Gold Cup the start of a journey that ends with the Ryanair Chase as its intended destination – or knowing the sponsors, somewhere close to the Ryanair Chase that will require a bus transfer.

Silverburn looks like being my No.1 hope for the Paddy Power Gold Cup,” Nicholls told the Racing Post, not beating around the bush.

Understandably backing up the view of a trainer that clearly knows a thing or two about winning big prizes, Silverburn’s owner, Paul Green revealed “I understand Paul has made one or two glowing reports about the horse. I know he likes the handicap mark as he told me that a while ago.”

silverburn_longBased on the evidence of last season and the positive noises emanating from Ditcheat, we were about to close the case on this one, until we realised Cheltenham specialist, Nicky Henderson is planning to saddle Jack The Giant for the race. Jack has got the better of Twist Magic in the past and has a Cheltenham win to his name, giving him some genuine credentials to get the better of Silverburn. Henderson hasn’t thrown in the towel just yet saying

“He’s got to start somewhere and the Paddy Power might well suit.” The Queen could make an appearance in the winner’s circle if Barber Shop atones for a narrow defeat to Finger Onthe Pulse at this year’s Festival. Getting her hands on the Paddy Power Gold Cup would probably rank just below Canada and just above Tuvalu on the list of the Queen’s possessions. Henderson is bullish about Barber Shop’s chances saying “He ran very well at Cheltenham in the Jewson last season and again the Paddy Power is a possibility.”

Master McCoy..

Master McCoy..

Having landed the 2006 renewal of the Paddy Power Gold Cup with Exotic Dancer, the Jonjo O’Neill and Tony McCoy team will doubtless receive their fair share of support from the betting public. Don’t Push It looks to be the partnership’s best hope of success. Nigel Twiston Davies has his stable in top form these days as illustrated by Knowhere’s victory in the Old Roan Chase at Aintree on Sunday. The same horse finished a gallant third in last year’s Paddy Power Gold Cup and with Imperial Commander likely to represent the yard in this year’s renewal, he can’t be written off. “A brilliant jumper,” is how Twiston described an unwanted Christmas present or else Mahogany Blaze, another lively contender for the race.

The above is all from the Paddy Power blog. For my part I think they have overlooked a couple of interesting runners. The first is Tarotino and the each-way option of the race, Bible Lord at 20/1.

Tarotino trained by Alan King looks ahead of the handicapper still having won three chases and being raised a massive 15 pounds in the weights. There could still be more to come, we will find out how good he is in this race, he could till be very well treated. Taratino is our win bet selection for the Paddy Power Gold Cup.

Our each-way bet is priced at 20/1 in the shape of Bible Lord, trained by Andrew Turnell who won the Bet365 chase at Wetherby a couple of weeks ago and reappears here off the same mark of 136. I think he is over priced at 20/1 a very attractive each-way proposition. Our advice is to back him win and place.

Following this morning’s final declarations for Saturday’s Paddy Power Gold Cup, the sponsors make the Edward O’Grady-trained Tranquil Sea the 6-1 favourite to capture the feature race of this weekend’s Paddy Power Meeting.

Paddy Power himsef said: “We’ve got a new favourite in Tranquil Sea and the ground has possibly been the biggest factor with up to two inches of rain potentially coming ahead of race time. A lot of the others including Poquelin and Tarotino don’t want it soft and Tranquil Sea has always been well-regarded and is potentially well-handicapped.”

Paddy is offering one of his extraordinary money-back specials and losing punters will get their cash back if a Nicholls-trained horse wins the Paddy Power Gold Cup.

Paddy Power himself said: “This has to be our craziest money-back special yet. What better insurance policy could there be than backing your Paddy Power fancy in the knowledge that you’ll get your hard-earned refunded if the champion trainer wins the race with one of his well-fancied trio?”

William Hill also make Tranquil Sea Favourite.

TRANQUIL TOPS THE BETTING BUT IRELAND 10/3 TO BREAK 29-YEAR BLANK!

After a swell of support yesterday, Edward O’Grady’s Traquil Sea tops the betting with William Hill for this weekend’s Paddy Power Gold Cup at the 48-hour declaration stage.

The seven-year-old was backed down to 11/2  from 9/1  yesterday, and now boasts favourtism in the Grade Three handicap on Saturday ahead of the well-fancied Chaopturgeon (6/1), and Alan King’s Tarotino (7/1).

Not since Bright Highway in 1980 has an Irish-trained runner won the race though, and Hills offer odds of 10/3 that the trend is broken this year with either of the two Emerald Isle raiders.

Heavy rain forecast for Cheltenham has provoked further money for the French-bred Tatenen whose impressive soft-ground win at this meeting 12 months ago led to the five-year-old going off the well-backed 4/1 Arkle favourite.  Andy Stewart’s bay gelding is now an 8/1 chance with William Hill having been 10/1 just 24-hours ago.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’Always a keen betting heat, the punters have been out in droves to play in this year’s renewal with a host of horses supported ante-post. The move for Tranquil Sea now makes him our biggest liability, and the William Hill head office will be anything but calm if he prevails.’’

Paddy Power Gold Cup Preview

TONY MARTIN’S fearsome reputation precedes him on any potential English raids and the sponsor makes his Northern Alliance a 10-1 shot to land the Paddy Power Gold Cup, the first big race of the new jumps season, at Cheltenham’s Paddy Power Meeting on November 14.

tatenen_jumps
However, on the day on which the entries were revealed, the Irish trainer has warned punters to hold fire on their Paddy Power Gold Cup bets as the Naheez gelding has a number of options, including the Cheltenham feature. Northern Alliance was last seen in action when jumping brilliantly to land the Guinness Kerry National, over three miles, at Listowel last month.
The County Meath trainer said: “He’s in the Paddy Power Gold Cup and two races at Down Royal on November 7 – the JNwine.com Champion Chase and the Skymas Chase for second season novices – and it all depends on the ground as he wouldn’t want heavy ground.

“It’s very early to call yet which one he’ll go for, but I am very happy with him, all is going well and he is an intended runner somewhere in the next fortnight.
“I thought that he had a great chance at Listowel last time and it was lovely that he did it as well as he did and he was very good.
“If he did run in the Paddy Power, he’d have no problems going back to two and a half miles as Cheltenham is a lot stiffer than Listowel and he has won over two miles and been third and fourth in the Galway Hurdle over two.
“Wherever he goes next, I’d hope that he would stand a nice chance.”
Paddy has installed the Paul Nicholls-trained Poquelin, who won over two and a half miles at Cheltenham earlier this month, as the 5-1 favourite for the Paddy Power Gold Cup, while Alan King’s Tarotino, who hacked up at Bangor in May, is a 9-1 shot with the lovable bookie. Next best are the Nicholls’ pair of Tatenen and Chapoturgeon together with Northern Alliance all on 10-1.
Paddy Power himself said: “Paul Nicholls looks to have an immensely strong hand in the Paddy Power with three of the first five in the betting. We think that Poquelin is his number one, but it will be fascinating to see which of the Ditcheat contenders attracts the cash initially.”
