Henderson Saddles You're The Top

After a kind Aintree meeting, in which the likes of Burton Port and Mad Max successfully flew the Seven Barrows flag, You’re The Top heads to Berkshire reasonably fresh after a 30-day layoff. The six-year-old was sent over fences in November and struck at the first time of asking by seeing off I Have Dreamed with a polished display. He failed to cope with a couple of smart sorts at Doncaster next time out but got the show back on the road at Huntingdon, before disappointing in the Grand Annual at Cheltenham. A couple of mistakes cost him any chance that day but he has outstanding claims returned to a right-handed track in a small field.

Fit To Drive (3:45 Ascot) hinted at a return to form at Bangor last time out and can find enough progress to take the Playhouse Company Handicap Chase. Brendan Powell’s mare loves to hear her hooves rattle and the drying ground across the country is a massive boost for her chances. The eight-year-old ended last season on a high and started off the current campaign in great heart by hitting the target at Worcester and Kempton. The handicapper made her pay the price during the mid-winter but she has dropped to within 1lb of her last winning mark and is poised to strike.

Nicky Henderson trains Super kenny

Prominent in the betting for the Triumph Hurdle throughout the winter, he only made his debut over timber at Stratford on the Monday before the Festival began.

He cruised to victory, though, leaving connections dreaming of bigger targets.

“Aintree is very much the plan. Nicky said he worked very well yesterday and, all being well, he will definitely go,” said Harry Herbert, racing manager to the owners, Highclere Thoroughbred Racing.

“He looked professional at Stratford and Nicky has always said from the word go his schooling had been very good.

“It was a really encouraging debut and Nicky has also put him in the big race at Punchestown as well so he is more than happy with the way he is progressing.

“Ground-wise, he went on the soft on the Flat but Nicky has always thought he would be better if it was not so soft, so that may be an issue to watch for.

“In hindsight, it may prove to be a good thing we missed the Triumph, we were always slightly behind the clock for it and it just wasn’t to be.

“We’ll be thrilled if he runs a big race next week, it’s a lovely group of people who own him which includes Kenny and Gabby Logan.

“Nicky is happy with him and it will be fun to find out how good he is, we know he’s decent but we don’t know if he’s top class.”

“We had a scare with Punchestowns last week when he had a bruised foot which held him up for a couple of days, but I don’t think has affected us dramatically,” Henderson told talkSPORT. He’s back in good form, he schooled yesterday and he’s got one more bit of work to do tomorrow. He’s a very high-class horse. He’s only had two races over fences. I probably would have preferred a third one, but it’s been a desperate winter for frost and snow and everything. He comes here in very good form. Long Run is something else. I’d like to think he might be something very special, but we’ll find out next week.”

This week should be officially classed as Cheltenham Form Study week becuase the racing is poor once again. I have not had a bet this week and will not be tempted again today.

All roads lead to the Cheltenham Festival and until the festival starts a week on Tuesday I think no matter what cards we are presented with, the quality is going to be perceived as sub-standard.

It really is getting interesting as news starts to come thick and fast. I am really looking forward to it. I will be there all week with Suntalk Radio, which I am massively looking forward to, in fact I cant wait.

Today the feature card is Newbury with Doncaster a close second, both over jumps. One horse I am really looking forward to is Super Kenny, trained by Nicky Henderson who could be a major player in the Triumph Hurdle. He wants good ground so the soft at Newbury is not ideal.

Todays Free Horseracing Tips;

2:10 Newbury, Super Kenny- Win. Despite less than ideal ground you would want to see Super Kenny win this in some style.  He makes his debut over hurdles having decent French Flat form, winning several times over nine furlongs and finishing up with a third-placed finish in an extended 10-furlong Listed event at Le Croise-Laroche. Connections say of his chances on the ground “It’s supposed to be soft, good to soft in places and Nicky feels he will be better on better ground. He has been schooling well and showing a bit at home so we’re looking forward to it.”  Lets be honest if he has any chance at Cheltenham he has to bolt up here. I have backed him for the Triumph Hurdle at 25/1.

The stable won the Triumph Hurdle last year with Zaynar and I have heard some very positive reports about Super Kenny. You may want to back him now for the Triumph Hurdle; Best prices compared below;

Not much else of interest at Newbury, but I will be at Doncaster before zooming off to Newbury for the Greatwood Hurdle meeting on Saturday. I only have one serious bet for Doncaster which is from the inform stable of David Evans.

2:35 Doncaster, Novikov- Win. This is a claiming hurdle, a low quality affair although Novikov is a consistent performer and has the added benefit of AP McCoy in the saddle. Novikov has plenty in hand at the weights and if the layers try to get him beaten then I will be a serious backer. It is dependant on the price but this one is the best bet on the Doncaster card in my view. David Evans continues to impress on the flat, all-weather and over jumps, all the boxes are ticked today in my view.

Another really poor day of racing on Thursday, as far as conditions are concerned. Ayr is subject to an inspection and having just seen a severe weather warning for Scotland it must be odds against racing taking place on Thursday.

Huntingdon should be fine and the all-weather is at Southwell and Kempton tonight. I have a couple of bets, including one at Southwell.

Your Free Horseracing Tips for Thursday are;

3:35 Huntingdon, Master Of The Hall- Win. Master of the Hall is a decent type in my book, one who I actually made a note of in said book, to follow. It was a decent race that he won at Newbury, in fact much better than this one. He should make is three in a row with Barry Geraghty aboard and he holds an entry in the Neptunes Investment Novice Hurdle, so a win here will be interesting in that context from the Nicky Henderson yard.

All Weather action at Southwell

3:15 Southwell, Boundless Prospect- Win. Victory Quest is a Southwell specialist, but I think Boundless Prospect has a huge chance here. He steps up to two miles for the first time, a trip that looks ideal and a combination of the jockey’s claim and the rise in the weights by Victory Quest gives Boundless Prospect a monster chance. He always comes late and the extra two furlongs look ideal. At the right price Boundless Prospect looks a good bet.

Nothing is as exciting as finding out who killed Archie Mitchell, Live, on Eastenders. I find it exciting, not because of the plot but because it could be a total disaster. The great news is Master Chef is back on our screens, so all is well with the world.

Sandown will be touch and go if the rain that was coming down at Kempton last night is anything to go by. If it gets the nod the ground will be a nightmare. Kelso was a total disaster for Nicky Henderson, I wonder how long before we see the a Henderson runner at the borders track again?

Henderson faces another nightmare scenario with Punjabi who is due to run at Wincanton but the Somerset track is battling with the wet weather and has a 1pm inspection planned for tomorrow. A race full of promise for the Seven Barrows handler is rapidly turning in to a nightmare, but there is no one better to pull it round than one Nicky Henderson.

Nicky Henderson facing Champion Hurdle Issues

Fridays Horseracing comes from Sandown and Fakenham over jumps and Lingfield and Wolverhampton on the flat. I am focusing on the jumps today, but once again I recommend minimum stakes once again today.  Here are your free horseracing tips for Friday.

5:05 Sandown, Bob Hall- Win. I think this is the first time I have put up a bet in a Hunter Chase. It’s that kind of day! Recently though the quality of Hunter Chases has improved to the point where they are like pro-am races with big owners and stables muscling in on what was once the preserve of the amateurs. Bob Hall could be better than the field here with his pilot Alan Berry certainly being a very capable amateur jockey. I am happy to back Bob Hall here, hopefully Sandown will go ahead so we can!


3:45 Fakenham, Vivarini- Win. Last time out at Market Rasen Vivarini was beaten in a ding-dong finish, with the first two pulling well clear of the field. I am prepared to take that as pretty decent form which in the context of this race will be more than enough. Screenscraper is the obvious danger but at the weights, and with Adam Pogson’s claim thrown in, Vivarini is the bet of the day.

Saturday should be good, please God let the meetings go ahead without problems.

I have to say I was really looking forward to the racing on Saturday, but the cards are a bit disappointing. Certainly it seems that Nicky Henderson has scared off quite a few.

Binocular and Punchestowns will both win but will not have a hard race and neither they or us the public will learn much ahead of the Cheltenham Festival. I understand that there is another Nicky Henderson hot pot making its debut at Sandown. I feel that the yard could have at least four winners so a multibet may be a good idea to get some decent return.

The racing should all go ahead over jumps with Sandown, Doncaster and Wetherby the venues with Lingfield offering all-weather flat action on the polytrack. I will give you my list of possible bets today.

Sandown…

1:30 Sandown, Binocular- Win. A three horse race with a gulf in class the likes of which you will only see at Old Trafford this afternoon. He will win on the steel and pick up over £14k for doing it. We will learn nothing from this and will get no price, only one for the big money buyers and one for a multibet. As good a thing as you can get in my view.

McCoy rides for Nicky Henderson

2:05 Sandown, According- Win. This is another Nicky Henderson horse making it’s debut but the word from Seven Barrows is that this is a flying machine and is strongly fancied to win. I would take the earliest price possible as there is sure to be some good money for it. Anak is well regarded but According gets 10lb from it and should win. I hear they fancy it for the Triumph Hurdle! Zaynar won it for the yard last year and I suspect this will go straight to the head of the market should he win as expected.


2:35 Sandown, Punchestowns- Win. Yet another for the Henderson camp but a disappointing turn out for this valuable novice’s chase. Punchestowns is favourite for the RSA Chase and he will likely win unchallenged here at no price. If you want to buy a bit of money then this is another one to do so. One for the multibet.

Nicky Henderson could land a four timer

Doncaster…

2:15 Doncaster, Mad max- Win. I really think this horse will be a high class chaser. Having seen him in the flesh I can advise that he is huge, a true chasing type who jumps well and covers plenty of ground with his long loping stride. This is another trained by Nicky Henderson, making it four. A Nicky Henderson four timer will cost the bookies a packet, so take the early prices before they shorten up.Mad Max is my banker of the day, assuming the price is right.


I recommend a Nicky Henderson Four timer, all four should win.!

Saturday Big Betting Handicaps…

3.25pm Doncaster-Blue Square Handicap Chase :
5-1 Free World, 7-1 Oiseau de Nuit, 8-1 I’msingingtheblues, Leo’s Lucky Star,  10-1 Kalahari King, Pepsyrock, 11-1 Tartak, 14-1 Doctor David, 15-1 Lennon, Tarotino, 18-1 Beggars Cap, 20-1 Lorient Express, 22-1 Moon over Miami, Santa’s Son, 33-1 Andreas (EW 1/4 1,2,3,4)

Verdict: Tartak is a very good each-way bet in my view. Last time he was totally outclassed in the King George, so disregarding that he has form that gives him a very good chance, certainly of getting in the frame. Take Tartak each-way.


Sandown 3.40pm Masters Handicap Chase:
5-1 Exmoor Ranger, 13-2 Razor Royale, 7-1 According To John, Killyglen, Massasoit, 10-1 Oedipe, 12-1 Lorum Leader, 14-1 Gone To Lunch, Pretty Star, 15-1 Lacdoudal, 18-1 Monkerhostin, 22-1 Or Jaune, 25-1 Psychomodo (EW 1/4 1,2,3)

A tough race and I have a soft spot for the vetran Lacdoudal, at a course he has won twice. I hope he runs well and is one for a small each way. One I do like is Killyglen who has the the benefit of  Tony McCoy in the saddle. I am sure he could have ridden Gone To Lunch but has opted for Howard Johnson’s top weight. I like his chaces and will be backing him.

Caroles Legacy was a game winner with Noun De La Thinte coming oh so close to winning again, she was beaten only a neck, a very game mare who owes us nothing.

Racing today kicks off a great weekend of action over jumps with Friday’s cards coming from Chepstow, Newbury and Doncaster. The big race on Saturday at Donny is the Great Yorkshire Chase which has attracted a really strong field. Denman will not run at Cheltenham, waiting instead for Newbury in a couple of week’s time.

Here are my best bets for Friday, over the sticks;

1:30 Newbury, Master Of The Hall- Win. I was a little concerned about the Nicky Henderson stable form but as we saw on Thursday there is nothing to worry about. Master Of the hall can add to the stable’s impressive seasonal tally with another win in this decent looking novice hurdle. In my view Henderson’s charge has the best long term future and should confirm that by following up on a good win last time at Sandown.

Nicky Henderson could land a Newbury Winner

3:15 Newbury, Adams Island- Win. Tony McCoy rides Adams Island for Rebecca Curtis, over hurdles for the first time. At Ffos Las last time out he absolutely bolted up in a bumper. That confirmed what a decent prospect he is and assuming he has schooled well he could win this in the style of a good horse. The booking of McCoy is significant and the stable is in decent form.


3:05 Doncaster, Barwell Bridge- Win. At Doncaster I like the look of Barwell Bridge who can make light work of these. The price may be the draw back here but he should completely hack up in my view. Timmy Murphy takes the ride for Warren greatrex who has started his training career from his new base in some style.
