Nicky Henderson craves Cheltenham Gold Cup at end of troubled Festival

National Hunt racing has treated us to Red Rum overcoming Crisp, Bob Champion beating cancer to win the Grand National and Dawn Run seeing off the boys in a Gold Cup. Nicky Henderson has his own dark obstacle to surmount in the Festival’s defining race on Friday. Long Run’s bid is no longer a straightforward Corinthian tale.

In the saddle, yes. When Sam Waley-Cohen boards Long Run in this Gold Cup he will attempt to become the first amateur since Jim Wilson in 1981 to win chasing’s most illustrious prize. Waley-Cohen, 28, divides his time between running a dental services firm with 150 employees and galloping round England upsides the likes of Ruby Walsh and AP McCoy.

Long Run, the joint-favourite with Imperial Commander, is his father Robert’s horse. Their quest is a family affair, maintained in honour of Thomas Waley-Cohen, Sam’s brother, who succumbed to cancer at the age of 20. This story of enterprise and togetherness is from the top drawer of steeplechasing yarns. But Henderson, Long Run’s trainer, has his own reasons for wanting to break his Gold Cup duck, and they stem from a need to protect his reputation.

Henderson is the emotional, bustling, old school master of Seven Barrows in Lambourn who described himself as “shattered” when the defending champion, Binocular, had to be withdrawn from Tuesday’s Champion Hurdle after the stable were told he would test positive for a banned substance if he carried the JP McManus colours round Cheltenham in the most important race for hurdlers.

The fuss started when a stablemate of Binocular returned a positive post-race A-test for a steroid administered 18 days before the event. Conventional veterinary wisdom was that the substance would clear after eight days. Alarmed by the positive result, Henderson plumped for an elective test on Binocular and scratched the Champion Hurdle favourite when the British Horseracing Authority told him the horse would fail a post-race test if he turned up in the Cotswolds.

Henderson is a trainer to the royal family and has won more than £1m in prize money this season. But there is more to this episode than an establishment figure narrowly averting a scandal on day one of the Festival. Indignation persists over the failure by Henderson and the British Horseracing Authority to announce that Binocular would not be able to run. The horse’s elective test showed positive on Thursday – but the disclosure was delayed until Sunday morning.

Three years ago Henderson was fined £40,000 and banned from making race entries for three months after Moonlit Path, owned by the Queen, tested positive for tranexamic acid, a banned blood-clotting agent. The vet who injected the royal mare with the banned substance, James Main, was recently struck off.

Against this background Long Run’s trainer has endured a miserable Festival, despite starting the week joint-favourite to send out the most winners, a title he has won eight times. With 37 Festival victories, he started the week only three behind Fulke Walwyn’s all-time record of 40, and sent a strong team headed by the country’s best young chaser, Long Run, who halted Kauto Star’s quest for a fifth consecutive King George at Kempton. Henderson declines to discuss these controversies. He is increasingly sensitive about the use of “doping” or “dope tests” in relation to incidents he regards as accidents or oversights. And he was known to be irritated when his runners on Tuesday were hauled off for post-race tests. His Cheltenham winners have dried up just when he needed a dose of cheer to lift the ill-feeling over how he delayed the Binocular announcement and the doubts about veterinary procedures at his yard.

So Long Run brings a darker hue of melodrama to the Gold Cup, with many punters pointing out that had a less powerful operation run into the kind of difficulties the Henderson yard encountered last week then condemnation would have been more stinging. There is no rush to cast aspersions in relation to the way Binocular’s Champions Hurdle preparation was mismanaged. But plenty feel there are unanswered questions and wonder how so many errors came to be made.

The intrepid Waley-Cohen family are entitled to separate themselves from this hullabaloo. Their mission retains its purity. They bought Long Run because he was a “spectacular” specimen, to quote Sam, and because they owned others from his family tree. In the King George, his jockey feels, horse and rider proved they belong on this exalted stage. But the Gold Cup is another level up. To see Waley-Cohen matching strides with Walsh, McCoy and co will be the most compelling amateur-professional clash since Mr J Wilson booted home Little Owl.

Mr S Waley-Cohen – mountaineer, helicopter pilot and motorbike rider – brings a thrilling edge to his hobby. “What you’re trying to do is take a horse to the edge of what it’s capable of,” he says. “The second you step back into the safety zone and say: ‘I can’t get it wrong, I can’t get it wrong,’ you’re not going to win. There’s an element of ‘throw your heart over it’ to persuade the horse about what you’re trying to do. And if it doesn’t work – boom!”

A Media Luz Cut For Triumph Hurdle….

Victor Chandler cut the mare A Media Luz from 8s to 6/1 for the Fred Winter and 20s into 14s for the Triumph Hurdle after her facile victory at Huntingdon.

Nicky Henderson’s filly was sent off the 8-15 favourite to gain a first success over timber and had little difficulty in seeing off her rivals.

The Cheltenham Festival is only a month away…. Nicky Henderson has a derth of good hurdlers…..

Best Odds……

It is a big weekend of racing coming up, here is an early preview from Charlie McCann or Victor Chandler….

A full complement of cards today sees jumping at Market Rasen and Sedgefield and a flat card on the sand at Southwell. The best of the action is over jumps and the Hitman has all your essential free horseracing tips……

Cheltenham Festival only weeks away

The Cheltenham Festival is only 5 weeks away now, but sadly no Cheltenham clues will be on show today. That said at Market Rasen there are some interesting runners that could pocket us a few quid.

Higgys Ragazzo (1:35) is another from Nicky Henderson Seven Barrow’s hurdlers production line and if reports are right should win this readily. Tony McCoy gets the ride, so punters know they will get 100% from the saddle, no matter whether it is the Cheltenham Festival or a Tuesday at Market Rasen! Higgys Ragazzo was twice a winner on the Flat for Richard Hannon, and should win over hurdles for the best trainer in the business.

Thanks For Coming (2:05) will be a popular choice with punters to complete an opening race double for the Henderson/Tony McCoy combination and he has every chance. With improvement from last time this is a race that connections would hope to win.

Quantitativeeasing (2:35) is NOT one to back but it will be interesting to watch this one. Not an easy ride, McCoy should win hard on the steel but would you take 1-5? Good Luck.

Sunday Horseracing Preview, 6 Feb

The best action of the day on Sunday was in Ireland at Leopardstown which has been abandoned due to heavy rain. The Irish Hennessey Gold Cup card has been lost to the weather, a huge shame!

As far as the UK is concerned we have Fontwell and Musselburgh, both over the jumps.  There are plenty of new names of late joining the training ranks and one of those is Gary Brown who saddles Ilewin Tom (1:50) at Fontwell. This should be a winner despite the 7 pounds penalty for his win last time out.

Captain Kirkton (2:20) should make quick work of the field and justify his short price. Beaten only a head by previous winner Mintiverdi on his debut in a bumper, Captain Kirkton trounced the opposition on last month’s hurdling bow at Lingfield. Gary Moore’s charge looks a decent hurdler in the making and can take this before going on to better things.

Nicky Henderson is the man to follow at Musselburgh and he could easily come back with a treble.

Good luck.

Horseracing Betting Update – Binocular Fails To Impress

Binocular has been eased to 3/1 (from 11/4) at the head of the market for the Champion Hurdle and Oscar Whisky cut to 11/1 (from 14/1) after the two Nicky Henderson-trained horses won their respective Champion Hurdle trials this afternoon.

Henderson Has Champion Hurdle Key

Oscar Whisky was undoubtedly the more impressive of the two in winning the Welsh Champion Hurdle at Ffos Las, barely coming off the bride to record an eight length victory. Binocular also won relatively easily at Sandown but failed to impress AP McCoy who was similarly downbeat after the horse won the same race twelve months ago.

“Although both Binocular and Oscar Whisky posted reasonably facile successes this afternoon, the former wasn’t as impressive as anticipated and this adds another dimension to what is already a fascinating renewal of the Champion Hurdle,” said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

Medermit has been cut to 6/1 (from 10/1) for the Arkle after running out the game winner for the totepool Challengers Novices’ Chase by half a length from Captain Chris. The latter has been cut to 9/1 (from 12/1) for the Jewson Novices’ Chase at the Festival with Medermit similarly trimmed to 7/1 (from 9/1) for the same race.

Lush Life Heores Hurdle Fav, Horseracing Betting Update

A final field of 21 have declared for Sandown’s Heroes Handicap Hurdle on Saturday, with William Hill reporting strong support for the Jonjo O’Neill-trained Mister Hyde, now 7-1 from 10-1.

Free Horseracing Tips

Nicky Henderson trains Lush Life

The six-year-old appreciated the switch to handicap company when winning at Towcester in November, before finishing a decent sixth to Grands Crus at Cheltenham, although well beaten. He arrives on the back of a good win back with the novices at Plumpton latest.

A number of rivals are set to re-oppose, with Nicky Henderson’s Lush Life, ahead of Mister Hyde when they last met, topping the betting at 11-2. Winner of a competitive Prestbury handicap on his last start, he boasts a victory over classy Champion Hurdle fancy Menorah as a career highlight.

Lucy Rhodes, spokeswoman for William Hill, said, ‘Lush Life is our current market leader, but all the interest has been with the AP-ridden O’Neill entrant, who we’ve cut to 7-1 from 10s following strong support. As far as we’re concerned, Mister Hyde certainly looks the bookies’ villain amongst these Heroes’.

Totescoop6 Heroes Handicap Hurdle (William Hill bet): 11-2 Lush Life, 7-1 Alfie Spinner, Mister Hyde, 10-1 Kilcrea Kim, Prince Tom, 12-1 Like A Hurricane, 14-1 Pause and Clause, Supreme De Paille, 20-1 County Zen, Dansimar, Miss Overdrive, Numide, Quartz De Thaix, 25-1 Dantari, Mr Jay Dee, 33-1 Alitlhar, Arkose, Gee Dee Nen, Roll Along, William Hogarth, 66-1 National Trust (EW 1/4 1,2,3,4)

Nicky Henderson is Horse Mix-Up

Somewhat of a mixup at Nicky Henderson‘s yard on Thursday as two runners arrived at the wrong courses resulting in both being non-runners.

Higgy’s Ragazzo who was due at Ffos Las at 1.20 went to Warwick and First In The Queue was a runner at Warwick, went to Ffos Las.

Good job it was spotted before they ran!

Wednesday’s Horseracing Preview

It looks a good day of horseracing on Wednesday with jumping at Huntingdon and Musselburgh. There is also flat action at Kempton and Lingfield. Free Horseracing Tips from Racing Diary….

Free Horseracing Tips

All Weather action at Lingfield and Kempton

I like But Beautiful (7:35 Kempton) who will complete three wins in a row should she win tonight despite being hiked up five pounds by the handicapper. As a daughter of Pivotal she certainly is bred to do the job and with improvement she is probably well weighted again here.

Over jumps Huntingdon is where the best card is staged. Buckie Boy (1:45) is a Nicky Henderson newcomer who has been the subject of some good reports, as are many from Seven Barrows! This could be one to keep an eye on for the future.

Henderson could complete a double with Master of the Hall (3:15) who looks to be in a match bet with Voramar Two who has been second in all of his last three starts. I am always suspisious of horses who repeatedly finish second and with the Nicky Henderson yard in such good form I am firmly with Master of the Hall here.

Voy Por Ustedes Switched To Nicky Henderson Yard

Former Champion Chaser Voy Por Ustedes is to go in to training with Nicky Henderson, in a move away from Alan King.

Voy Por Ustedes to Henderson Yard

In an official statement racing manager Barry Simpson read: “Following the close of the 2009/10 season where the form of Voy Por Ustedes had deteriorated considerably, it was decided to carry out a full scale veterinary investigation.

“Subsequently, following several tests including a bone scan, it was found Voy Por Ustedes had sustained a fracture to his ilium wing and was also suffering from significant pain in his lumbar region and left hind stifle. It was thought the fracture occurred early on in training during 2009 and possibly during his race at Ascot where he jumped so badly when finishing third to Albertas Run in the Amlin Chase. It should be stressed the normal symptoms shown for this type of injury were not apparent at that time.

Sir Robert’s veterinary team imposed a strict regime for the horse to follow and it is only now the horse is completely sound. It is far too early to say if the treatment and rest will be sufficient for the horse to stand training. However, Sir Robert wishes to give him every possible chance to show he retains some of his previous form. If that level of form is not forthcoming, the horse will be retired and will return to Sir Robert’s farm in Yorkshire.

Sir Robert felt a fresh initiative would be beneficial to the horse and he has joined Nicky Henderson at Seven Barrows where he has four other horses in training. The horse has settled in well to his new routine, he thrives on his work and still appears to be most enthusiastic. At present Voy Por Ustedes does not hold any entries for the Cheltenham Festival, but if everything goes to plan he will be aimed towards Aintree, Punchestown and Fairyhouse.”
