Michael Owen‘s hat-trick helped Manchester United finish top of Champions League Group B with a 3-1 win over Wolfsburg at the Volkswagen Arena. Sir Alex Ferguson hailed hat-trick hero Michael Owen following Manchester United‘s memorable 3-1 win over Wolfsburg in Germany tonight. Needing a point to secure top spot in Champions League Group B, United flattened their hosts even though they had 14 senior players missing.

United win in Wolfsburg

MICHAEL Owen is 5/4 to make Fabio Capello’s World Cup squad following his hat trick in Manchester United’s 3-1 win over Wolfsburg.

But the striker is still odds-on (4/7) not to make the plane to South Africa.

Ladbrokes spokesman, Nick Weinberg, said: “Owen has provided Capello with a timely reminder of what he is capable of. If he can consistently find the net he could still force his way into the squad.”

Meanwhile Chelsea‘s bad run continues. Michael Essien scored and then limped off injured as Chelsea closed Champions League Group D with a surprise 2-2 draw at home to Apoel Nicosia. The Blues remain unbeaten in the competition but their defensive shortcomings are under the spotlight again after they allowed minnows Apoel to snatch a last-gasp draw at Stamford Bridge.

Will Fabio Be Taking the Michael?

Owen Scores Again for United….

AFTER his Carling Cup goal on Tuesday night, William Hill have cut their odds for Michael Owen to make Fabio Capello’s World Cup squad from 5/2 to 9/4 – and offer 1/3 that he will miss out. Watch the goal at Footyfix.co.uk

‘Owen really needs a run of games and goals, which Fergie doesn’t currently looking like giving him, so although he appears to be fit again he isn’t getting the games which would enhance his prospects of recapturing his best form and forcing Fabio’s hand’ said Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe.

CAN MICHAEL OWEN STILL MAKE WORLD CUP SQUAD?

WILLIAM HIL have lengthened their odds for Michael Owen to make the England squad for the World Cup finals from 2/1 to 5/2 following his latest injury setback, and he is now 2/7 to miss out. ‘It has been one step forward, one step back for Michael Owen, but few fans would not want him included in the squad if he is fit, well and scoring nearer the time’ said Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe.

Michael Owen sacks Nicky Vaughan (Man Utd rubbing off?)

Owen sackes trainer Nicky Vaughan from £8m Stables…

It is reported in today’s Daily Mail that Michael Owen has sacked trainer Nicky Vaughan. Marcus Townend reports;

Vaughan sacked by Michael Owen

Vaughan sacked by Michael Owen

Nicky Vaughan has arguably become the first managerial casualty of the new football season after being sacked by Michael Owen as trainer at the England striker’s lavish Cheshire stables.Owen has grown frustrated at the lack of success achieved by the horses at the state-of-the-art yard which has cost him over £8million.

Sources have told Racemail that he wanted to address the situation so that he can concentrate all his energies on the forthcoming Premier League season with new club Manchester United. A successor to Vaughan is expected to be announced within a fortnight.It is understood that staff at the 160-acre stable near Malpas were told of developments by Owen on Tuesday via a conference call from the Far East where he is currently on tour with his new club.

Nicky Vaughan’s reaction;

‘It was a shot out of the blue. I haven’t spoken to Michael, everything has been done by his mother. Working with high-profile people, these things are always likely to happen.  That’s life. I have another meeting on Friday but apparently they have told the staff there is someone coming in the next 10 to 12 days. It is unfortunate that the horses have had the virus, so I have not been able to do much with them other than trotting.‘They moved into a new complex just before the Chester May meeting and it went round the whole lot. We had some very sick horses. There are some very nice, well-handicapped ones for whoever picks up the reins.’

Racing Diary Says;

As sad as it is for Nicky Vaughan who is a capable trainer Michael Owen has dedicated lots of time, effort and money to his stables and as a winner he expects success. He comes from football where patience is not a virtue and it may be the right move, it may not be, but it is his prerogative. All the best to Nick Vaughan for the future and I am sure he will be back training soon. When you shell out £8m you earn the right to be a bit ruthless.

I just wonder if the Manchester United mentality of winning has rubbed off on Owen? A more positive results at all cost way of thinking. Lets hope so! Owen is a top player and I hope he has a great season at Manchester United. Others will not agree! I don’t support Manchester United, for the record!
