Punters Back England Despite Unrest

ENGLAND are out to 10/1 to win the World Cup, following their 0-0 draw with Algeria having been 12-1. It seems punters saw some value and have taken the price. John Terry says it could all actually be fine in the end….

The bookies still make the Three Lions 1/2 to qualify from their group despite another lacklustre performance. England defender John Terry appeared to be leading some kind of coup against manager Fabio Capello yesterday. At a morning press conference the former England captain – stripped of his leading role by Capello four months ago – suggested that players were gearing up for a showdown with the Italian at a crisis team meeting that night.

David Williams of Ladbrokes said: “We were the only folk in England left with anything to cheer about as the nil nil draw was another cracking result for the bookies. If we didn’t have such big liabilities on England we’d shunting their odds out a lot further. Punters are unlikely to be backing Capello’s men for World Cup glory on what we’ve seen so far.”

Argentina are the 7/2 favourites to life the World Cup, narrowly ahead of Brazil at 4/1 and Spain at 5s. England are the sixth favourites. We will discuss this situation in our next World Cup Betting Podcast.

Sea the Stars Unlikely to Run..Fame and Glory Odds On

Fame and Glory 10-11 Fav

Fame and Glory 10-11 Fav

Following the news that John Oxx’s English Derby hero Sea The Stars is unlikely to run in the Irish equivalent tomorrow, Paddy Power suspended betting on the Irish Derby yesterday evening at just after 6.30pm. The Irish layer then replaced the market with a new book betting without Sea The Stars. Aidan O’Brien’s Fame And Glory is 10-11 favourite in the new market.

Paddy Power himself said: “It’s a great shame that Sea The Stars looks like being an absentee. But it will still be a cracking renewal with the Epsom second and third fighting it out at the top of the market and both have been popular since the doubts began to emerge about Sea The Stars’ participation.”

Power Cut for Irish Derby…Sunday 28th June

Irish Derby
Sea The Stars Evens f (from 11-10f) Paddy Power

Paddy Power, Ireland’s biggest and friendliest bookmaker, has cut Irish Derby favourite Sea The Stars to evens favourite from 11-10 favourite, the price he was put in at immediately after this morning’s declarations.

Paddy Power himself said: “Despite the uncertainties about the great Irish weather and Sea The Stars’ actual participation in the race, punters have obviously thought that we were a tad too generous with the 11-10 and swooped accordingly.”

Sea The Stars Will Run in Irish Derby….Sunday 28th June

Sea the Stars has been declared to run on Sunday in the Irish Derby at the Curragh.  The dual classic winner will look for a historic third classic as John Oxx’s colt seeks to follow-up his Derby win at Epsom with a repeat at The Curragh.

Sea The Stars...

Sea The Stars...

So can he do it?

Sea The Stars will face 12 rivals in Sunday’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby if he runs. John Oxx has expressed concern about the ground becoming too soft at the Curragh and may not give the go-ahead to run until raceday. So it depends on the going!

A going report for the track on Friday reported 12 millimetres of rain overnight, with the going as good to yielding on the straight course and good on the round course while the forecast is for sunny and dry weather for the weekend.

Sea The Stars is set to be challenged by seven runners from Aidan O’Brien’s stable including the second, third and fifth from Epsom – Fame And Glory, Masterofthehorse and Golden Sword. They are joined by Byzantine, Drumbeat, Rockhampton and Hail Caesar.

Oxx also saddles Mourayan, with Jim Bolger’s Gan Amhras and Kevin Prendergast’s Recharge others to come into consideration. The Bull Hayes and Loch Long complete the line-up with O’Brien pulling out Malibu Bay, Freemantle and Set Sail. Bolger did not declare Ard Na Greine.

We will wait to see if Sea the Stars runs, but a clash with teh Epsom second and third will be great to watch!

Back or Lay- the choice is yours…

Murtagh thinks Fame and Glory can beat Sea the Stars…Irish Derby, Sunday

JOHNNY MURTAGH thinks that by employing different tactics then there will be a different result when Fame And Glory takes on on Derby hero Sea The Stars in the Irish Derby at the Curragh on Sunday, 28th June. Is this a case of wishful thinking?

The exceptional Sea the Stars

The exceptional Sea the Stars

Some critics said that jockey Seamie Heffernan never tested Sea The Stars’ stamina when riding Fame And Glory at Epsom. The Mick Kinane-ridden 2000 Guineas winner became the first horse to do the Newmarket-Epsom double since Nashwan in 1989.

Johnny Murtagh, who takes over on Fame And Glory, having ridden fourth home Rip Van Winkle in the Derby, said yesterday:

“Mick really dictated the pace to the rest of us. The Curragh will be a good test, as it’s a big, galloping track, so hopefully we can put it up to Sea The Stars. I’m not going to give up on our horses yet as we’ve got two horses with massive chances in Fame And Glory and Masterofthehorse and they have definitely improved. I’m going to stick with Fame And Glory as I think he’s definitely improved at home from Epsom and he’s very solid.”

But will a change of rider and tactics bring about a different result? As much as I admire Johnny Murtagh, one of the best I have ever seen in the saddle, I think Sea the Stars is exceptional and won as easy as you like at Epsom. He will stay the trip and will just go faster! He can land a historic treble of classics and I will be on him this time.

Agree of Disagree? Then Back or Lay with Betfair!

Betfair layers are bucking the market by offering ‘industry best’ even money price on John Oxx’s Derby and Guineas winner.

Sea The Stars is as short as 2-5 in some quarters for the Irish Derby at the weekend, but the Epsom winner currently trades at an industry-best evens on Betfair for the Curragh Classic.

Fame And Glory is next best at [3.7], with Masterofthehorse a [5.3] chance on the exchange.

Betfair spokesman Tony Calvin commented: “Betting is predictably light at this stage – though I dare say the £70,000 we have matched on the race is as much as been placed anywhere else in the industry – but the weakness in Sea The Stars is there for all to see.

“He traded at [2.2] at 8am this morning, and currently is a very weak even money chance. Clearly, some people think that there is a possibility that he may sidestep the race altogether.”

Sea The Stars will Add Irish Derby to Classic Collection..Sunday 26th June

John Oxx’s brilliant colt Sea The Stars is among 17 entries for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh on Sunday 26th June. The Derby and 2000 Guineas can add yet another classic to his roll of honour. At 1.86 on Betfair there could be some value for a horse that looks the real deal!

2000 Guineas, Derby now Irish Derby?

2000 Guineas, Derby now Irish Derby?

This son of Cape Cross has two Classics to his name already this season having become the first horse since Nashwan in 1989 to claim the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Derby at Epsom. Now he will run on his home turf in Ireland in the Irish Derby.

Many of those who took him on at Epsom could try their luck again, including Aidan O’Brien’s second Fame And Glory, third home Masterofthehorse and fifth home Golden Sword. They can’t beat this wonder horse can they? If you think so then LAY Sea the Stars on Betfair!

O’Brien has also left in Byzantine, Drumbeat, Freemantle, Hail Caesar, Malibu Bay, Rockhampton and Set Sail giving him no less than 10 contenders, but only one can win it and I would rather have one Sea the Stars than 100 others.

The Jim Bolger-trained Gan Amhras will look to run better than the disappointing effort at Epsom and may be joined by stablemate Ard Na Greine, while Oxx also has two chances having left in Mourayan. No one will seriously think they can beat Sea the Stars.

Loch Long, Recharge and The Bull Hayes are the other entries.

Will Sea The Stars Run?

A favourable weather forecast is positive for the chances to Sea The Stars running in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby on Sunday.

The colt’s trainer John Oxx had said the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown as a potential alternative target for his brilliant dual classic hero if ground conditions turned against him at the weekend.

However Paul Hensey, racecourse manager at the Curragh, told At The Races (Sky 415):

“John did express some concern, as he did before Epsom, that he may miss the race if the ground was soft. However we are currently good to firm and the forecast is for mostly dry and settled weather throuh the week. That would point to Sea The Stars running here.”

Punters v Bookies
A string of favourable results for Paddy today left him savouring a great final day at the Royal fixture.

Paddy Power himself said: “It’s been a very good day and at one stage looked like being an absolute bloodbath for punters. However, High Standing winning the Wokingham did them a favour and took some of the gloss off as he was the best backed horse in the race.

“Pires, who was also very popular, getting beaten leaves us on the right side for today. Overall it’s been a 2½ all score draw for the week!”

The King’s Stand went Down Under thanks to Scenic Blast and this Group 1 sprint could be bound for either South Africa or Hong Kong courtesy of J J The Jet Plane or Sacred Kingdom.

There is precious little between them on form – and it might be worth backing one and saving on the other – but if pressed to split them I suspect J J The Jet Plane might be the one based on his runaway defeat of smart rivals under a big penalty at Windsor.

Newmarket vibes have been positive about last year’s winner Kingsgate Native after an abortive spell at stud, but the “Greek Freak” Ialysos has much more on than when winning at Haydock.

King’s Apostle goes really well here but needs a career best to improve his fine Ascot record, while Art Connoisseur is the one who appeals as capable of going well at a wild price if back to the sort of form he showed here last year

JJ The Jet Plane, representing South Africa, has been at the head of the ante-post market for some time but he now has to share favouritism with Sacred Kingdom. The Hong Kong sprinter was supplemented for this race and he seems the stronger of the two on the early exchanges. The pair are general 11-4 joint favourites this morning.

With one day still remaining at Royal Ascot 2009, bookmakers believe Gold Cup-winning rider Johnny Murtagh has the top jockey title wrapped up.

Picture
Murtagh – remains favourite.

Perched on four winners for the meeting after missing both Friday and Saturday through suspension, Murtagh was cut to 1/2 by totesport from the 4/6 on offer 24 hours earlier, while William Hill are more generous at this stage, moving to 4/6 from 8/13.

Sky Bet were keen to lay Murtagh before Friday’s action and were a top-priced 10/11. They now offer 4/7.

Murtagh is looking to retain the London Clubs Charity Trophy for the second year in a row and his nearest challengers in the betting are Richard Hughes and Ryan Moore.

Champion jockey Moore moved to two winners for the meeting through Perfect Stride in the Wolferton Handicap and still has some tasty rides left on the final afternoon with the likes of Kingsgate Native and Doctor Fremantle to look forward to.

Moore is 15/8 second best with Hills and Sky Bet and 9/4 with totesport. Although Hughes has three on the board, he is virtually discounted and available at 10/1 with Sky Bet, despite being odds-on after Tuesday’s treble. Richard Hills is another with three after the brilliant success of Ghanaati in the Coronation Stakes, but he is a 25/1 chance with Sky Bet and totesport.

Mike de Kock is in bullish mood as he prepares to saddle South African speedball J J The Jet Plane in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot on Saturday.

Picture
J J The Jet Plane – ready to rumble.

The five-year-old was unbeatable in his native land, with the only defeat of his career so far coming on the Nad Al Sheba dirt in February.

He put that disappointment behind him by returning to winning ways back on the turf in Dubai – and also showed he is equally effective on British soil when running away with a Listed race at Windsor.

“I’d say he has definitely come on a bit since Windsor and, thankfully, we have had no interruptions since then. We just have to see if he’s good enough now,” said the South African handler.

“I do think it’s an advantage that he’s been over here a while as he’s settled in well now and has already travelled to a racecourse – that all helps as he can be a bit fired up.

“He’s drawn nine of 14 and that gives the jockey all the options. Everything is in his favour and the fast ground is 100% ideal.

“You have got to respect Sacred Kingdom after the way he ran in Singapore and of the locals, I suppose there is King’s Apostle who I know a little bit about.

Racing Diary (Carl):

Trainer Joe Janiak scratched the Australian ‘iron horse’ when signs indicated all was not right with the gelding. On veterinary examination, it was found Takeover Target had a raised temperature; he had also reportedly been lethargic in his work.

His absence deprives enthusiasts of a conclusion to a romantic tale of the Turf that has endured as long as Yeats has been winning Gold Cups. Takeover Target had been expected to line up in his fourth consecutive Golden Jubilee, a race in which he had finished second, third and fourth.

Racing Diary (Carl):  John McCririck’s Day Five Tips

It’s the final day of Royal Ascot but Big Mac and Gary are still bullish about their chances of winning…

Big Mac says: “My Thursday was ruined after that fat guesser somehow managed to pick Radiohead in the first – and at a Betfair SP of [14.0], too, with the industry return only 10-1. How lucky can a fat man get? (hopefully very lucky if the man in question is me).

“But that creature has no stamina – the last exercise he did was when wiggling his legs coming out of the womb – and he will tie up in the closing stages.

“Mac to get up on the line in the Battle Of The Bulge!”

Golden Jubilee Stakes (3.45)

I was at Windsor when JJ The Jet Plane won and I was hailing him as the best horse ever to race on the course, alongside with the mighty Halling. Mike De Kock came on ATR before the race and told all the South African ex-pats to lump and he ran a great trial for this; giving weight and a trouncing to second-raters would have teed him up nicely for this prize. He is a superstar and at around [4.0] he is a decent bet.

Wokingham Stakes (4.25)

I like Jimmy Styles in the Wokingham. It may be unoriginal as he is the 11-2 favourite in a 28-runner field but he is very progressive, is ideally drawn in stall one and is from the red hot Clive Cox stable. That’ll do for me.

Queen Alexandra Stakes (5.35)

I like Halla San in the marathon contest. He is not far off on the ratings, is in fair nick, should love the trip and hails from the in-form Fahey stable, who got on the Ascot scoresheet with a 66-1 winner on Thursday.

Like the look of JJ The Jet Plane, Jimmy Styles and Halla San?

Lay of the Day.

It is all about price in this game and i think Doctor Fremantle is too short in the Hardwicke at 7-4 on Betfair. He is a high class animal has always promised more than he has delivered, and connections were expecting him to win by more than a nose on his reappearance. He could be vulnerable.

HARD TO IGNORE CAMPANOLOGIST

The victory of Flying Cloud on Thursday will have given Godolphin a welcome boost and CAMPANOLOGIST (Royal Ascot, nb, 3.05) may continue their revival with success in a below-par renewal of the Hardwicke Stakes.

Last year’s King Edward VII Stakes winner was given a cute ride from the front by Frankie Dettori that day and I’m hoping that the Italian can employ similar tactics this afternoon on a horse which should strip fitter for a recent outing in good company at Sandown.

This looks to have been the primary plan all season for Campanologist and he should be thereabouts.

GOLD STRIKE FOR NOSEDA

The presence of classy foreign sprinters J J The Jet Plane and Sacred Kingdom adds further spice to the Golden Jubilee Stakes today and it would be no surprise to see either oblige in a hot renewal.

However, bookmakers are now wise to raiders from outside the UK and, with trainer Jeremy Noseda enjoying a good week, it may prove prudent to risk a few units each-way on STRIKE THE DEAL (Royal Ascot, nap, 3.45) to add another shock to the race’s roll call.

The 4yo has been within a length or two of the top sprinters for a while now, but posted a big speed figure at Lingfield last time and may represent better value than his more high-profile opponents.

TAKE TAMAGIN TAMAGIN

(Royal Ascot, 4.25) is a bit of a law unto himself, but Kevin Ryan’s speedster is a talented handicapper when in the mood and could be primed for a big run in the Wokingham.

I like the form of his recent run at Lingfield and his early-season win at Newcastle suggests a stiff 6f is well within his compass these days.

Racing Diary (Carl):  Rob Wright The Times Says;
The speedy Sacred Kingdom, trained in Hong Kong by Ricky Yiu, is strongly fancied to land the group one Golden Jubilee Stakes (3.45) today.

Scenic Blast, the Australian raider, put up a brilliant display to take the week’s other group one speed test and Sacred Kingdom arrives here with similarly strong credentials. Rated the best sprinter in the world in 2007, he lost his form last year after being injured but still shared top spot in the rankings with Marchand D’Or.

Sacred Kingdom has bounced back to his best this term and showed a good turn of foot to beat Rocket Man by a neck, with Diabolical a further 3 lengths back in third, in the group one International Sprint in Singapore last month. That was his first venture outside Hong Kong and, according to his trainer, he is relishing his new roving role. “He’s travelled well and looks terrific. It looks like he’s enjoying this trip even better than the one to Singapore,” Yiu said.

Blessed with a high cruising speed, Sacred Kingdom should be able to track the front-running J J The Jet Plane before cutting him down in the closing stages.

Pick of the home team is Kingsgate Native. He won this race 12 months ago when trained by John Best and was retired to stud. However, having failed to get any mares in foal, Kingsgate Native was returned to training with Sir Michael Stoute and, despite his lengthy absence from the track, he has to be respected.

Sacred Kingdom can land the Golden Jubilee

51334957

I see Sacred Kingdom as the clear pick for the Golden Jubilee Stakes (3.45) as he ticks all the right boxes, his form is rock solid, he is superbly bred with a sprinting pedigree and he carries the hottest turf sprinting form in the world at the moment. He was considered a brilliant Australian juvenile with a current rating which puts him alongside the likes of Choisir. Trained in Hong Kong connections paid a £45,000 late-entry fee for Sacred Kingdom and must be reasonably confident following his last run which saw him readily win the Krisflyer sprint in Singapore.

The only worry is the draw. Five of the last seven Golden Jubilee Stakes winners have come from the top or the bottom four in the draw, so being drawn eight is not ideal . However, it has been reported than in his work, at Manton where he is stabled in the UK, that he is going very well and his trainer Mr Yiu has been making very positive noises in the Australian media. JJ the Jet Plane is going to be popular but I think that the odds are a reaction to the run at Windsor, where Sacred Kingdom won a huge race with he and Rocket Man drawing clear of a world class field. Sacred Kingdom came back to form in Hong Kong and a repeat of the Singapore run will destroy this field. This is my best bet of the week and I think the odds could be genuine value. Watch that Singapore run from Youtube…

The Wokingham looks as competitive as ever (4.25) but High Standing excels over six furlongs with figures of four wins from four starts over the trip. An eye-catching jockey booking is Ryan Moore who has had winners at Royal Ascot and looks in top gear now.  William Haggas has done really well with the four year-old but there are two concerns. Firstly the draw again and the fact that he likes to come from off the pace which with a field 28 is always fraught with problems, but there are not many better than the Champion jockey to get them home! I am sure that with a better draw he would be favourite and is probably an each-way price.

I think Ryan Moore could have a winner earlier on the card with Doctor Fremantle (3.05) who can follow up his Chester win by taking the group two Hardwicke Stakes.

Todays Bets

3.05 Doctor Fremantle win

3.45 Sacred Kingdom win

4.25 High Standing win and place
