Racing Diary (Carl):  Continued from BBC Sport…..

Mitchell Johnson came in and rode his luck, adding 43 with overnight hero Michael Clarke. He eventually finished with 63, playing some fine shots towards the end, as Australia were bowled out for 406.

But it was Clarke who was the second man to fall in the day, for 136, when he tried an ambitious shot in Graeme Swann’s first over.

By now, even the most pessimistic of England fans was scenting victory. And that mood became even brighter when Nathan Hauritz lasted only five balls before falling to the irrepressible Flintoff, who also dismissed Peter Siddle.

Swann wrapped it all up, flattening Johnson’s middle pole as the left-hander charged him.

As well as being the first Ashes win for England at the home of cricket since 1934, it was also only their second since 1896.

They now move on to the third Test at Edgbaston, which starts on 30 July, with all the initiative, while Australia will surely be forced into changes – with their seam-bowling department expected to come under the microscope.

There was a spectacular, expectant atmosphere at the start. Unusually, all tickets had been pre-sold for the final day of the match and with the members also turning out in force, only some of the corporate areas looked a little thin.

England started with a ball that was six overs old and their overnight nerves were settled when Flintoff tested Haddin outside the off-stump and Collingwood held a low, but indisputably clean, catch.

Flintoff continued to pose a threat with almost every delivery he bowled. Clarke did not look like a batsman with a century to his name, and by the time Johnson had reached four he had already enjoyed two lucky escapes.

First, he nicked towards slip, the catch not quite carrying, and then an excellent lbw appeal had to be stifled by Rudi Koertzen’s call of no-ball.

James Anderson was not quite the same sort of threat and after three overs was replaced by Stuart Broad. Johnson edged but again the ball bounced just before reaching the slip cordon. The resulting single brought Clarke back on strike and he hit a beautiful off-drive for four.

Anderson kept changing his bowlers at the Nursery End, and after three overs of Broad opted for the spin of Swann.

It proved to be an inspired move. The off-spinner has developed quite a knack for taking wickets in the first over of a spell, and Clarke – who crucially had been kept quiet by the accurate seamers – felt the need to impose himself.

He skipped down the wicket, yorked himself, and the ball turned to clip off-stump. Soon afterwards, Hauritz compliantly chose to leave a Flintoff delivery that bowled him on the angle before Johnson got lucky again, Swann dropping a sharp caught-and-bowled chance.

Australia were not about to give England any last-minute heartache, however. Flintoff beat the number 10 Siddle for pace, scuttling one into his stumps, leaving Johnson and last man Ben Hilfenhaus needing 134 for the win.

That was never on the cards and with lunch still 20 minutes away Swann supplied the coup de grace.

Racing Diary (Carl):  BBC Sport at Lord’s

England took a 1-0 lead in the Ashes series and ended a 75-year wait for a win against Australia at Lord’s as they wrapped up a 115-run win before lunch on the final day of the second Test.

Andrew Flintoff, in his final Test appearance at the famous old ground, defied his injuries to take three of the five wickets England needed in an extraordinary 10-over spell to finish with 3-43 on the day and 5-92 in the innings.

What promised to be a nervy morning for England fans soon became a more pleasant prospect when Flintoff, with a typically inspirational spell of Ashes bowling, picked up a wicket with his fourth ball of the day, the 10th in all.

Flintoff had Brad Haddin, who had survived for more than three hours on Sunday, caught at second slip by Paul Collingwood for 80 and Australia were 313-6, still 209 runs away from completing an all-time record chase in a Test match.

Racing Diary (Carl):

England spinner Graeme Swann praised the impact of Andrew Flintoff after England claimed a 115-run win over Australia to go 1-0 up in the Ashes series.

The all-rounder, who will retire from Test cricket at the end of the series, claimed five wickets at Lord’s to inspire the hosts to victory.

Flintoff took the first wicket of the day, dismissing Brad Haddin for 80, to end his 185-run partnership with centurion Michael Clarke.

England won the toss and decided to bat

Racing Diary (Carl):

Andrew Flintoff claimed only the third five-wicket haul of his career as England completed their first Lord’s triumph over Australia for 75 years.

The 31-year-old all-rounder claimed five for 92 as Australia, chasing an unlikely victory target of 522, were dismissed for 406 shortly before lunch on the final day to seal England’s 115-run triumph.

The emphatic victory, England’s first Ashes win at Lord’s since 1934, puts them 1-0 ahead in the five-Test series with three matches remaining and establishes them as firm favourites to emulate the success of 2005 and regain the Ashes.

Australia had resumed the final morning in front of a sell-out Lord’s crowd on 313 for five with high hopes of claiming the 209 more runs required to reach the world record victory target.

9:36
Racing Diary (Carl):

England spinner Graeme Swann remains confident the hosts can win the second npower Ashes Test despite Australia’s stubborn resistance on Sunday.

Michael Clarke and wicketkeeper Brad Haddin combined superbly after the tourists were reduced to 128 for five and when bad light stopped play, Australia were 313 for five, having been set an unlikely 522-run target.

Swann expects England to still press home their advantage but admitted they could do with making early inroads in the morning.

Racing Diary (Carl):

paceman admits Lord’s is something special – and intends to write himself into the history of the famous cricket venue during the second Ashes Test.

The tourists went through a practice session today, giving some of the squad their first taste of the unique sloping pitch.

Lord’s has proved a happy hunting ground for Australia, with England’s last victory coming way back in 1934.

Racing Diary (Carl):  Australian spinner Nathan Hauritz believes that his team can still win the second Ashes Test at Lord’s despite England tightening grip on the match.

The home side tightened its grip on the contest by being 6-311 at stumps on day three, a lead of 521 runs.

“We batted last week and scored over 600 in Cardiff. We obviously didn’t bat as well (here) as we would have liked in the first innings but that happens, that’s cricket. Whatever it takes, we’re going to have almost two days of batting. And just a positive outlook and backing our ability. That’s what we have to do,” Hauritz said.

There had been fears that Hauritz wouldn’t be able to bowl for the rest of the match after dislocating his middle finger on his bowling hand on day one, FOX Sports reported.

Hauritz collected England’s first three wickets in their second innings, but not even his efforts could stop the home side from charging towards a first Ashes win at Lord’s in 75 years.

Australia’s chances are going to largely depend on the weather conditions that have been so influential to date and the discipline of the England attack.

The home side made the most of the heavy, overcast conditions on day two as they destroyed Australia’s batting lineup by claiming 6-49 in 15.1 overs. (ANI)

9:29
Racing Diary (Carl):

Graeme Swann has insisted England can rely on Andrew Flintoff to play a full part in their push for victory in the second Test at Lord’s and deny Australia an historic triumph.

England’s leading off-spinner admitted being as concerned as the rest of the Lord’s crowd as Flintoff struggled through 17 overs and seemed to be troubled throughout with a recurrence of his recent knee problems.

It has led to speculation that all-rounder Flintoff, who has announced his intention to retire from Test cricket at the end of the Ashes series, will not be able to continue through today’s final day when Australia resume on 313 for five chasing a world-record victory target of 522.

But Swann, a long-term friend, has calmed fears about the involvement of Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen, who also seemed to be struggling with a back injury, while Graham Onions is expected to be able to bowl despite an elbow problem.

9:29
Racing Diary (Carl):  Picture Swann – has faith in Flintoff.
9:28
Racing Diary (Carl):  he persistent problem on his Achilles tendon has made England batsman Kevin Pietersen doubtful for the third Ashes Test.
The former England skipper will meet a doctor after the end of the second Test at Lord’s here Monday for another injection into his problematic Achilles tendon, The Daily Telegraph reported.

Pietersen had already admitted that his achilles injury is always playing on his mind and is affecting his performance in the ongoing Ashes series. And if there is no improvement before the third Test it is hard to see him being fit enough to play.

Pietersen already had a homeopathic injection and a cortisone injection in the tendon and the next procedure will be a saline solution with a small percentage of cortisone, which is intended to cushion the movement of the tendon within its sheath.

The treatment is unpredictable and it can turn out to be a a miracle cure, or prove completely ineffective. But the most likely result is that it will give temporary relief, ideally for three or four weeks and that could allow him to avoid surgery in the short term. If Pietersen opts for surgery it will take him six months to get back on field.

Racing Diary (Carl):

It is hard to imagine that England’s cricketers got much sleep on Sunday night. They must remain the favourites to win this Test, with a 209-run lead and only five wickets still to claim. But there is still a chance that Australia might be able to bat for two sessions and clinch one of the most unlikely victories in sporting history.

England won the toss and decided to bat

Umpires: B R Doctrove, R E Koertzen

10:29
Racing Diary (Carl):

Australia used their sense of injustice over a series of umpiring blunders to discover a greater level of resilience and raise doubts over England’s march towards their first Lord’s Ashes win in 75 years.

At 2.55pm on the fourth afternoon of the second Test, England were on course to claim a 1-0 lead in the npower Ashes series after off-spinner Graeme Swann bowled Marcus North to leave Australia reeling on 128 for five, still trailing by 393 runs.

With 47 overs remaining of the day and the final two recognised batsmen – Michael Clarke and Brad Haddin – at the crease, England’s progress towards victory seemed a formality.

But three and a half hours later, when Clarke and Haddin accepted the offer of bad light with 12 overs remaining of the day, England were no nearer completing their victory after Australia battled defiantly to reach 313 for five, just 209 runs away from one of the great Test wins.

England won the toss and decided to bat

8:48
Racing Diary (Carl):

Nathan Hauritz remains positive Australia can win the second Ashes Test after England piled up 311 for six, an overall advantage of 521, in their second innings at Lord’s on Saturday .

“We definitely can win this,” he said. “We batted last week and scored over 600 in Cardiff.

“We obviously didn’t bat as well as we’d have liked in the first innings but whatever it takes, we’re going to have almost two days of batting.

“We need a positive outlook and back our ability, that’s what we have to do.

“Batting for two days on a fourth and fifth day wicket is going to be extremely tough but that’s the reason you play Test cricket for your country.

“It’s not meant to be easy and we just have to stay positive about it.”

Racing Diary (Carl):

Wicketkeeper Matt Prior believes England will make the right decision over when to declare to give themselves the best chance of winning the second Ashes Test against Australia at Lord’s.

England lead by 521 runs with their second innings total on 311 for six overnight but Prior predicted captain Andrew Strauss would look at the conditions tomorrow before deciding when to declare, with two days still remaining.

Prior said: “I think it’s tricky. I think you have to come back in the morning and take a look at the conditions.

“We will make a decision to give us the best opportunity to win the game,” Prior added on Sky Sports.

“We are holding pretty much all the cards now.”

Prior and Paul Collingwood both hit half-centuries for England and the Sussex man enjoyed his time in the middle.

Racing Diary (Carl):  Day 3…

Matt Prior signalled England’s determination to learn from their mistakes by leading a ruthless drive towards a match-winning lead in the second Ashes Test.

England’s wicketkeeper-batsman hit a superb 61 off only 42 balls and typified the desire to capitalise on their dominance over Australia having failed to do so earlier in the match.

Prior’s brilliant innings, which included nine boundaries, helped England progress into a daunting 521-run lead at the end of the third day at Lord’s after reaching a commanding 311 for six.

His rapid-fire contribution set the tone for a fast accumulation of runs to make amends from their disappointing first innings display, when they failed to build on a 196-run opening stand and were dismissed for 425.
