Six Nations 2011: Dan Cole of England ready to face Italy’s Tiger

England are Favourites to Win the Six Nations….Italy up next………..
Powered by Guardian.co.ukThis article titled “Six Nations 2011: Dan Cole of England ready to face Italy’s Tiger” was written by Robert Kitson, for The Guardian on Tuesday 8th February 2011 19.52 UTC

Dan Cole admits that he is looking forward to his Twickenham date with Italy this weekend. He may be England’s first‑choice tighthead prop but at club level there is a hairy barrier to his weekly enjoyment. While many in one part of the east Midlands are thrilled that their one-man Italian battalion, Martin Castrogiovanni, has just agreed a new contract to stay at Welford Road with Leicester, it has not made Cole’s life any easier.

Hence the 23-year-old’s eagerness to show what he, and the rest of the England pack can do this weekend, against Castrogiovanni and co. To say Cole is keen to impress is like saying the Leaning Tower of Pisa is slightly off-beam.

“There is a pecking order [at Leicester] in my eyes and I am not at No1,” said Cole, wryly. “To get there means being better than Castro.” Opportunities to out-muscle his rival are not to be squandered.

Quite what happens when Cole approaches the end of his own Leicester contract, next year, will be fascinating to see, given the top-end salaries that quality tightheads can demand. If Castrogiovanni is staying around, the younger man may yet be tempted to look elsewhere.

“I am under contract for the next 18 months and we will see how it goes,” said Cole. Who says props cannot sidestep when required?

Even Cole, though, admits that he partially owes his current status to Castrogiovanni. If there was no need to fight tooth and nail at every training session, just to get into the Tigers’ first team, he might not have risen through the ranks so quickly.

“In some respects we’re good for each other in that one of us doesn’t have to play 80 minutes week after week,” he said. “We push each other as well. You don’t want it handed to you on a plate. You actually quite enjoy the graft. You can’t be complacent. If you’re not being pushed you might fall away. It’s also about what’s best for the club. I’d rather win a Premiership final and be on the bench than start and not reach the final.”

Off the field the two men get on well, although Cole is still waiting for Castrogiovanni to serve him free meals in his Italian restaurant. Coffee is on the house but even Cole concedes that feeding complimentary meals to 19-stone forwards does not make sound economic sense. “If I ran a business and I let five rugby players in I probably wouldn’t let them eat for free,” he says. Then again, Castrogiovanni did invite Cole, Louis Deacon and Steve Thompson to share a ride on the Italian team bus when England were in Rome last year. Someone else must have paid for the petrol.

Such friendships will be put to one side on Saturday. England’s scrummaging coach, Graham Rowntree, said this week that Cole has been advising his loosehead, Andrew Sheridan, on how best to combat the 29-year-old Castrogiovanni.

“Dan is a real student of the game,” said Rowntree. “I have always been impressed, even from an early age, how much he knows about the game. He has given us a few tips on Castro.”

Cole paid attention to events in Rome and Paris last weekend, when the scrum was pivotal. “As a tighthead every game is a challenge,” he said. “But the perception is that Italy, compared to Wales, are better. In terms of scrummaging, they are in the top two or three in the world. They base their game on the set piece and have a lot of guys who know how to scrummage. You’ve got to test yourself against that dominance. Against Ireland they were intent on pushing the Irish for a penalty or trying to break their will as a pack. They are happy to have a long, slow scrummage and wait for you to crack.”

Both England and Italy will finalise their line-ups on Thursday.

Tuesdays Horseracing Preview

Jumping at Leicester and Sedgefield with an all-weather card at Southwell is Tuesday’s horseracing line-up. The best card is at Leicester with plenty of interesting horses running.

Leicester stages a Jumps Card Today

The card kicks off at 1:10 where Champion Court will go off pretty short but looks a very solid proposition and is one with plenty of promise for the future. This does look a match with Tornedo Bob, who I think will be second here, a good looking forecast.

Invictus should land the 1:40 at a short price for Alan King and Robert Thornton. Alan King’s gelding won a point-to-point in Ireland last year and shaped nicely on his debut under Rules earlier this month when a close fourth to Master Hyde at Plumpton.

Nicky Henderson is rarely out of the winners, he has a big chance with Lifestyle (2:40) who was probably in need of the run when down the field in a Wincanton bumper in November but is subject of good reports.

Not a huge day for betting but nevertheless there should be winners to be had.

Mondays Free Horseracing Tips, 25 October

Over the weekend we saw some very nice young horses, not least Casamento on the flat and Cue Card over hurdles. I really like Cue Card and he has laid down a Cheltenham Festival 2011 marker.

National Hunt is in full swing

So it really is jumps season now, but there is another couple of weeks of flat racing, but it is all over bar the shouting, we know the Champion Jockey and Richard Hannon should wrap up the trainer’s title. Free Horseracing Tips on Monday, just one bet for you from Leicester.

2:30 Leicester Cape Rambler, Win. Cape Rambler has shown enough on his first few appearances to suggest he can open his account in the EBF Fosse Way Maiden at Leicester on Monday. Henry Candy’s youngster was noted making late progress when sixth on his debut at Salisbury in June, after which he ran third behind subsequent dual Group One winner Dream Ahead at Nottingham. He again picked up minor honours in another strong race on his latest start at Newmarket and there is every reason to believe he is still improving. This looks to be his easiest test to date and connections will surely be disappointed if he cannot sign off his season with a win.

Back to work and possibly the end of summer after the bank holiday. It is back to bread and butter after the feast of the past few days. Here are your free horseracing tips for Tusday, from Racing Diary.

3:40 Leicester, Angus Newz, Win. She recorded her first win in almost two years at Newmarket on Saturday and is fancied to continue her revival in Leicester’s ladbrokes.com Prestwold Conditions Stakes. Mick Quinn’s seven-year-old was rated as high as 100 in her pomp but a long winless spell had seen her drop down to just 78 ahead of her weekend assignment. A couple of decent efforts behind the likes of Hawkeyethenoo and Elnawin earlier in the campaign suggested she still retained a level of ability, so it should not have come as a huge surprise when she finally got her head in front at Headquarters. As well as her drop in the weights, it could have been the slightly easier conditions that aided her return to form and it is interesting she is turned out again so quickly for this contest. Her course record is pretty impressive with two wins and three thirds from five starts and with conditions again likely to be testing, another bold show is anticipated. Midnight Caller looks a good thing in the EBF ladbrokes.com Filbert Maiden Fillies’ Stakes. The Dansili filly was a narrow second on her debut at Doncaster and would possibly have won had she not hung right in the closing stages. It would be a big surprise if she does not make amends at the second time of asking.

Thursdays Free Horseracing Tips, 15 July

A busy day of action on Thursday with plenty of horseracing to get stuck in to. We have three bets, all good prospects, Free Horseracing Tips from Racing Diary….

Free Horseracing Tips

Free Horseracing Tips from Racing Diary

Paul Hanagan in a man with a mission, he is flying in the winners and he goes to Leicester then up the M1 to Doncaster for his evening rides.  Ryan Moore will need to start riding winners if he is going to catch the Northern challenger. I personally am firmly in the Paul Hanagan camp, but I am a northerner! We have not had a northern Champion Jockey since Kevin Darley pulled it off.

2:40 Leicester King Of Aquitaine, Win. Paul Hanagan again rides for Kevin Ryan for whom he had a winner at Catterick on Wednesday. This is a nursery handicap, the great news is that King Of Aquitaine is the top weight. A mark of 84 isn’t an insurmountable barrier in this company and the old theory about backing the top weight in a nursery might be the best route to riches here. Certainly stable and jockey are in form and his last time out win at Newcastle suggests he is in good nick.

7:35 Doncaster, Wooton Bassett, Win. It is that man again, Paul Hanagan who takes the ride aboard the well named Wooton Bassett. Firstly let me pay tribute to the town of Wooton Bassett. The people of that town make me proud to be English and I have nothing to admiration for the respect and gratitude they show our fallen heroes as they return home from war. Unlike that facebook page about the scum that was Raoul Moat, which makes me sick, Wooton Basset is something we should cherish.

One run so far for Richard Fahey and I think that without any sentiment Wooton Bassett can follow up for connections and assist Hanagan in his Championship Challenge.

8:50 Epsom, Waveband, Win. I will have a small bet on Mark Johnston’s charge here who rewards the excellent Amy Ryan with another ride for the yard after a great win on Sea Lord last week at Newmarket. Amy is a very good rider and will succeed in a sport that needs more females. Waveband has a six pound penalty but Miss Ryan takes off five, a good move for all in my view.

Some Horseracing News….

Harry Findlay will have to wait until Thursday morning to learn of his fate regarding the six-month warning off imposed by the British Horseracing Authority after a five-hour hearing before an independent appeal board panel in London.

Free Horseracing Tips

By Carl Harris

Here it is June, a great month of sport lays ahead. We have Racing from Epsom, with The Derby and The Oaks, Royal Ascot featuring five days of the best flat racing in the World and of course we have the World Cup which starts on the 11th June.

We also have International Cricket and there is plenty of horseracing, each and everyday. You will not go short of Free horseracing tips and our World Cup Podcasts will keep you in touch with the latest World Cup betting news.

I can’t wait for the World Cup! Come on England!

World Cup 2010

A super month of Sport in June 2010

With so much amazing sports and betting coming up in June it is a shame that it all kicks off today with the usual Tuesday fayre. I do have a couple of bets for you, here are your free horseracing tips for Tuesday.

Seb Sanders puts in the miles today, can he make it pay? Our free horseracing tips are two bets for Seb Sanders which are literally miles apart….

3:45 Leicester Comedy Act is Seb Sanders one and only ride at Leicester, for Sir Mark Prescott. he stepped up to ten furlongs for the first time last time out and won rather easily. Comedy Act will be hit hard by the handicapper next time the weights are published so the 5lb penalty he carries here today should be no problem. He can win this before attempting to complete his hat-trick in one of the several contests that he is entered for this week. Is the price right? Comedy Act should win!

8:55 Yarmouth Aestival, Win. Seb Sanders gets in his car and drives to Yarmouth where he has a few rides, but only one for his retained stable of Sir Mark Prescott. He trotted up at Brighton last time by six lengths and is clearly ahead of the handicapper. Six pounds extra will be no problem and again this should score readily before a huge hike in the weights comes his way. This should be a formality. It all depends on the price.

5:45 Yarmouth Margot Did had an easy win last time out, in her first start beating fifteen rivals. Hayley Turner retains the ride for Michael Bell and with potentially a lot more to come from this filly is very exciting and is my best bet of the day as long as the price is right. She could go off prohibitively short!

Good luck.

Mondays Free Horseracing Tips, 31 May

Bank Holiday Monday and there is plenty of racing to get stuck in to today. It’s Derby week, with the Oaks and Derby from Epsom coming up, then the World Cup, Royal Ascot and oh its a sporting feast in June.

Free Horseracing Tips

A sporting feast in June

I don’t like Bank Holiday racing, too much and low on quality, with a few notable exceptions. Therefore I don’t plan to get heavily involved today. However, here are your free horseracing tips, for Monday.

3:10 Goodwood Laaheb. A good race this at Goodwood, a Listed contest which stands out like a sore thumb today. The Michael Jarvis stable is in top form at the moment with a 30% strike rate in the last 14 days and an amazing seasonal tally of 40% winner. After a nice seasonal reappearance Laaheb can add to those stats by landing this listed contest at the expense of Palavicini. With four wins in seven career starts Laaheb is clearly progressive and very much in form. He looked in need of the run when third of seven in a Group Three last time out. He should come on for that and shopuld be able to give weight to Palavicini and win.

5:30 Goodwood, Ghufa can make it a family affair owned by Emma, trained by Jeff and ridden by Simon Pearce in the last at Goodwood. This horse used to be with George Baker but has done well under the stewardship of the Pearces. Its not a great race, by any stretch of the imagination but I take Ghufa to win again following a win in an apprentice race last time out.

2:05 Leicester Little Lion Man is making his debut at Leicester and I am told is fully expected to win. Only four runners, but I think he has scared them off. he won’t have to be much but lets face it it is a question now of price. We can only hope!

3:15 Leicester Timocracy is the best horse in this seller, illustrated by wins at Brighton and Lingfield of late. Timocracy who was bought for 4,400 guineas after winning at Lingfield and really should prove to be much better than the other horses in this race. The ground and trip are spot on here so again if the price is right, come on down to the ring and lump on Timocracy!

Good Luck, have a great Bank Holiday. See You Tuesday, June for the start of an amazing month of sport!

Mondays Free Horseracing Tips, 24 May

Mondays Free Horseracing Tips; 24 May. After a great weekend of horseracing we have some decent cards in the sunshine on Monday.

Picture

Chris Wilson from PA Sport says its time to get some Tax Free cash with Mondays Free Horseracing Tips….

7:40 Windsor Tax Free. The irrepressible Tax Free can collect yet another big prize at Windsor. Dandy Nicholls’ eight-year-old is one of the most popular sprinters in town, and looks a tempting prospect in the sportingbet.com Leisure Stakes. Although the dashing speedball is creeping towards veteran status, he is still likely to possess plenty of zest this summer. Things did not go to plan on his return at Doncaster, though, when he finished last in a six-furlong Listed heat in March. A combination of soft ground and a protracted absence were probably to blame for that no-show, however, and punters can rightly expect a bigger bang for their buck here. Tax Free has crucially done most of his winning in fast conditions, whereas many of his rivals perhaps need the heavens to open. This is not the easiest puzzle to solve by any stretch of the imagination, but Nicholls’ representative has been placed 20 times in 36 starts – winning 14 races in the process. With consistency such a hugely important trait in sprinters, Tax Free can again be relied upon to deliver the goods.

4:00 Leicester Seta is pretty much bombproof in the ladbrokes.com Charnwood Forest Fillies’ Conditions Stakes at Leicester. Luca Cumani’s filly has always carried a huge reputation, but she really needs to be translating such ebullient vibes across to the racetrack. Her eight-length romp on debut at Newmarket left many scribes pondering whether they had seen the next big thing, but she subsequently failed to deliver in a strong renewal of the May Hill. Nonetheless, there was still plenty of stable confidence before Seta’s Guineas tilt – but it all went horribly wrong. Despite having cosily been the stand-out horse in the paddock, she only beat five home in the Newmarket Classic. That, of course, does not tell the full tale as connections of those animals who were not drawn on the stands side essentially knew their fate inside the first few furlongs. Even if the hype has clouded the judgement of some observers, Seta is clearly far superior than that form would suggest. The decision to drop her back to seven furlongs here is, however, pretty revealing as it might indicate a slight fallibility over a mile. That said, few of her rivals will be able to live with her raw pace in this contest, which is clearly being utilised as a confidence-boosting mission. Even in spite of the presence of Baileys Cacao and Souter’s Sister, Seta cannot afford to lose in Leicestershire.

2:40 Leicester Rowan Lodge can secure yet another winner at Carlisle for up-and-coming handler Ollie Pears, who is in excellent form. Both the eight-year-old chestnut and his trainer do exceedingly well at claiming level, with recent efforts at Beverley and Musselburgh adding weight to that theory. Rowan Lodge also loves competing in Cumbria and is already three times a scorer at the track – one such triumph coming in this race 12 months ago. With the excellent Ian Brennan at the helm, a huge run looks assured.

8:25 Thirsk Royal Swain can carry on the good work back at Thirsk in the Weatherbys Bloodstock Insurance Handicap. Alan Swinbank’s four-year-old easily broke his Flat maiden at the North Yorkshire venue a couple of weeks ago, having previously caught the eye at the same circuit in April. The dual bumper winner, who also finished sixth in Grade Two company at Aintree, could have plenty of room to manoeuvre off an inaugural perch of 75.

Through The Cards, Mondays Free Horseracing Tips:

CARLISLE: 2.15 Marine Commando, 2.45 Rowan Lodge, 3.15 Soto, 3.45 Shayla, 4.15 Coolella, 4.45 King Of Eden, 5.15 Desert Hunter

THIRSK: 6.25 Muse To Use, 6.55 Jonny Lesters Hair, 7.25 Sailorman, 7.55 Tiradito, 8.25 Royal Swain, 8.55 Mey Blossom

WINDSOR: 6.10 Fifth Ave, 6.40 The Shuffler, 7.10 Berbice, 7.40 TAX FREE (NAP), 8.10 My Manikato, 8.40 Silent Act

Free Horseracing Tips

By Carl Harris

It is a desperate set of cards of that we are presented with on Tuesday. I will not mention again that it is only two weeks, to the day before the start of the Cheltenham Festival. We will not have this problem in two weeks time.

I have one free horseracing tip for you on Tuesday;

3:00 Catterick, Desperate Dex- Win. Ferdy Murphy looks to have improved this one out of hand with two wins from two outings since taking over the training. The handicapper as shoveled on the weight but there is every possibility that there is plenty more to come. In a poor race, off such a low weight I am prepared to side with the in form horse and at the prices he is my one and only bet of the day.
