Kauto Star goes to Kempton for 5

Despite the delay, the Kempton stage remains firmly set for Kauto to record an unparalleled five in one of the decade’s most eagerly-anticipated events, with Tony McCoy set to partner the white-faced superstar in his history-making attempts.

Irish raider Forpadydeplasterer completes the line-up, however compatriot Sizing Europe is an unfortunate absentee, along with veteran Ollie Magern.

MCCOY HOT FAV FOR KAUTO RIDE AFTER FEHILY MISERY

King George 2010

Kauto Star goes to Kempton

Noel Fehily’s Kauto Star William Hill King George ride hangs in the balance after Nicholls’ newest representative tragically crashed out aboard Rivaliste at Newbury on Saturday.

The injury comes as massive blow to the jockey, who had only recently been confirmed to ride the white-faced steeplechaser in Boxing Day’s highlight, thus, this surely leaves some doubt as to whether he will in fact be recovered in time to take up the coveted position.

Tony McCoy will take his place aboard Neptune Collonges and Big Buck’s on Saturday, leading William Hill to install the champion as heavy 1-4 market leader to secure the premier Christmas cracker.

Lucy Rhodes, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: “Yet more drama surrounds Kauto Star in his bids for a fifth King George. Noel Fehily was a relative outsider following the sudden absence of Ruby – aside from hot fav McCoy, will there be any other unfancied riders who can grab on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to grab the December 26th spotlight?”

The Kauto Star King George
Desert Orchid had his phenomenal William Hill King George VI Chase record eclipsed as Kauto Star made the race his own with a fourth consecutive success in the Boxing Day feature at Kempton.

Dessie’s four wins were punctuated by a second-place finish in 1987, while Kauto Star‘s sequence has yet to be interrupted and he underlined his status as a steeplechasing legend by finishing over 30 lengths clear of his nearest rival.

While his supporters used to be put through the mill with final-fence blunders, the Paul Nicholls-trained horse of a lifetime has become near faultless under Ruby Walsh.

The 8-13 favourite was imperious throughout and the only one to travel gracefully behind the fierce pace set by Nacarat. The field were well strung out as Nacarat thundered to the fourth-last, but the galloping grey looked a sitting duck ready to be picked off by the dual Cheltenham Gold Cup winner. Walsh sailed into the lead three fences from home and the final two obstacles proved easy pickings as Kauto Star came further and further clear.

Such was the manner of his success that William Hill make him just 6-4 to score for a fifth time in 2010. Madison Du Berlais stayed on best of the rest for second, pipping the Queen’s Barbers Shop for third with the gallant Nacarat a tired fourth.

The Kauto Star that turned up here was far superior to the one who was bustled up by Imperial Commander on his seasonal bow at Haydock, and the latter let himself down with an early mistake which knocked him out of contention. Nicholls had watched the race on a small television in the Tote betting shop, and was buoyed by the reception his nine-year-old received.

The champion trainer said: “He is great for racing and the crowd here today have been fantastic. It was never in any doubt barring an accident as he was always jumping and cruising. He is the best there will ever be for me. Since Haydock all he has done is bloom and watching that, it is probably the best he has been. Never mind going backwards, he seems to be going forwards and that probably is his best performance. Everything about him now is the utter professional. He is relaxed, grown up, jumps and will be a hard horse to beat next year. He is just as likely to be back next year if he stays sound. He is not going to have too many runs before then – it will be the Cheltenham Gold Cup and then back here.”

Kauto Star will now head straight for the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup on March 19 and the sponsors trimmed him into 5-4 favouritism to add to his victories of 2007 and 2009. Boylesports are the same price but Sky Bet and Ladbrokes offer 6-4. William Hill make him 6-4 to win a fifth King George in 2010.

Nicholls added: “Denman put his name in the hat the other day with an awesome performance (in the Hennessy) and Kauto has gone and done the same. Denman has got another run to come, of course, but it is going to make things interesting come March.”

Walsh received almost as much adulation from the crowd as his equine partner, and he said: “We jumped four out and he came on the bridle turning in. I had a look around and Barbers Shop was a good bit back and I was fairly confident.

“He never missed a beat at all and was deadly. It was relentless, but he has the cruising speed most horses don’t have. He’s won four King Georges and is a magnificent horse.”

Walsh faces the agonising prospect of choosing between Denman and Kauto Star at Cheltenham, with the likes of Willie Mullins’ Cooldine providing a further potential headache. Walsh added: “Anything can happen and horseracing could get me off both of their backs. It is a fickle sport.”

Those connected with the also-rans were full of admiration for Kauto Star, with Madison Du Berlais’ trainer David Pipe saying: “We thought if we could make the frame today we’d be happy, but Kauto Star is one in a million. A very, very good horse.”

Barbers Shop again came up short over an extended distance and his trainer Nicky Henderson conceded: “We’ve been debating it all and we have to say now that at this level he needs to drop back in trip and go for the Ryanair.

“I thought he ran a great race, though, and it’s a pity he couldn’t have finished second as he deserved it.”

Tom George was delighted with Nacarat’s performance in front of the sell-out 22,000 crowd, and said: “I was very proud of the horse to see him upsides a horse like Kauto Star turning in - Kauto Star was the only one to go with him!

“He doesn’t want an undulating track, so he won’t be going to Cheltenham, and we will have to look at the Bowl at Aintree again.”

By Carl Harris

It looks like the Boxing Day cards will be ravaged by the weather, but to be fair if you were to pick just one card to survive you would plump for Kempton. It looks like that will go ahead and boy is it an exciting card.

Kauto Star is the main focus of attention. He bids to be the first horse to win the race four times in succession, Dessie did it four times but in five years. It will not be easy, he faces a tough test and is very short to win but Kauto Star is one of those special horses that have become public property and will be the one being cheered on by the race day crowd. Can he do it?

The supporting card is of the highest quality and I will be focusing exclusively on the Kempton card. I reckon there is a few quid for us too. Here are my best bets for Boxing Day.

12:45 Kempton- Bellvano, Win. He looked very impressive last time hosing up by ten lengths at Newbury under Tony McCoy who takes the ride again for Nicky Henderson. He won hard held and looks another from the yard to be heading for the top. He will not be a great price but should get us off to a flyer.

13:55 Kempton- Long Run, Win. Making his debut for Nicky Henderson Long Run is very exciting. He is a multiple Grade One winner in France and if he can adapt his jumping style for the British fences he will take some stopping, in fact he should be too good for the field today. I have heard some good reports about this one and in all honesty I would rather see the likes of McCoy in teh saddle but the owners son, Sam Waley-Cohen takes the ride, he is a capable amateur. This could be impressive.

McCoy rides Binocular

14:30 Kempton- Binocular, Win. This is a pay back mission having blown out in the Fighting Fifth. That was a false run race where they went no pace and Binocular is much better off a fast pace. Hopefully the layers will be confident and offer a decent price. He is without doubt the class act in the race but faces a tough opponent in Go Native who won that race at Newcastle. A true run race will be a different story and connections will be hoping to see Binocular back to winning ways.

15:05 Kempton- Kauto Star, Win. Topping the bill is Kauto Star who has a date with history. What a race this is with thirteen rivals all looking to dethrone the king. Imperial Commander who ran Kauto Star to a pixel or two at Haydock will have another crack at Paul Nicholls’ dual Gold Cup winner, but I think it will be a totally different outcome. Kauto Star gets better from his first run, Imperial Commander runs best fresh. Better ground will see a different Kauto Star and he was made for Kempton. Trainer and jockey have been bullish about Kauto Star, comments you can not disregard. The only negative is the price, he is odds on and I have to say this is more about support, for me, than betting. I may in fact not bother punting and just cheer on my favourite horse. If he wins here then we can look forward to Cheltenham and a show down with Denman. I can’t wait!

Carl Harris’ Best Bets for Saturday 26 December (Boxing Day)

  • 12:45 Kempton- Bellvano, Win
  • 13:55 Kempton- Long Run, Win
  • 14:30 Kempton- Binocular, Win
  • 15:05 Kempton- Kauto Star, Win

Kauto Star Better Than Last Year Says Ruby Walsh

Ruby Walsh says Kauto Star is a better horse now than he was this time last year when he landed a third William Hill King George VI Chase at Kempton Park. The Irish jockey will attempt to partner the nine-year-old to a record fourth consecutive King George at Kempton on Boxing Day and he can’t wait to get on with his bid to make history.

Kauto Star odds on for King George

He told sportinglife.com: “I would say Kauto Star is as good if not better than last year. Last year he went to Down Royal and won an ordinary race and then went back to Haydock where he might or might not have won when he unseated Sam (Thomas) at the last. At least this year he’s going there on the back of a win and he seems to be in good form. Kempton’s been a very lucky track to me over the last couple of years and Kauto Star has been outstanding there. It’s a race I really look forward to and I can’t wait for it to come around. Kauto’s been a brilliant horse for my career. He’s an outstanding horse and to be associated with him is incredible. I’m looking forward to riding him and if he could win four King George‘s he will go down in history.”

Walsh was on board Kauto Star for his seasonal reappearance in the Betfair Chase at Haydock, where he beat Imperial Commander by the narrowest of margins in a dramatic photo finish.

Trainer Paul Nicholls said Kauto Star would improve for the run, but Walsh concedes that Nigel Twiston-Davies’ horse is a major threat to his horse on that running.

He continued: “I suppose he is a threat. If you take the form literally he has to be. That said, Imperial Commander seems to be a better horse going in the opposite direction, but he ran a cracking race in the Betfair Chase at Haydock and he has to have a good chance. However, a top-form Kauto Star would be nigh on impossible to beat around Kempton and Walsh says all the signs are there that he’s well in himself and ready to go. It’s pretty hard for me to tell how well he is at home but Paul sees him every morning so he’s a better judge of that than me, and he thinks he’s improved considerably so I’ll take his word for it and hope he’s right,” said Walsh. Clifford Baker rode him in his work with Big Buck’s last Wednesday and he was very happy with him. He’s been happy with him in all of his work so if he’s happy then I’m happy.”

Paul Nicholls also offered positive reports earlier about Kauto Star.

THIRTEEN RIVALS FOR KAUTO STAR! WILLIAM HILL KING GEORGE HERO 4-7 FOR A FOURTH HISTORIC WIN

William Hill King George VI favourite Kauto Star remains on target for an historic fourth consecutive win in the race after connections declared the chaser at the five-day stage today.

The nine-year-old was among 14 acceptors in today’s process and remains the firmly odds-on 4/7 favourite for the 59th running of the race. His Haydock rival Imperial Commander ranks as the 6-1 second-favourite, with Madison du Berlais third-in at 8-1.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’Punters seem to have ‘Kauto Star fever’ at the moment, and can’t stop backing him to gain his fourth win. It’s a one-horse book at this stage, but although a win by him will certainly wound us, there is a general consensus at William Hill that this is one result that transcends the bottom line.’’

William Hill King George VI Chase: 4-7 Kauto Star, 6-1 Imperial Commander, 8-1 Madison Du Berlais, 14-1 Deep Purple, Nacarat, 16-1 Barbers Shop, 20-1 Albertas Run, 40-1 Our Vic, 50-1 Tartak 66-1 Master Medic, Racing Demon, Roll Along, 100-1 Ollie Magern, 500-1 Sandymac (EW 1/4 1,2,3)

William Hill King George without Kauto Star: 11-4 Imperial Commander, 7-2 Madison Du Berlais, 6-1 Barbers Shop, Deep Purple, Nacarat, 10-1 Albertas Run, 16-1 Our Vic, 20-1 Tartak, 33-1 Master Medic, Racing Demon, Roll Along, 40-1 Ollie Magern, 200-1 Sandymac (EW 1/4 1-2-3)

****William Hill King George VI Chase Specials****

How Far Will Kauto Star Win By?: 16-1 Under 1 Length, 12-1 One to 1 3/4 lengths, 10-1 Two to three and 3/4 lengths, 3-1 Four to 10 lengths, 9-2 Over 10 lengths

Kauto Star Special: 7-2 Kauto Star to win the William Hill King George & Gold Cup

Age of the winner: 28-1 Six, 14-1 Seven, 7-4 eight, 8-15 nine, 25-1 eleven

Tony McCoy believes “only the weather” can prevent Kauto Star from making history on Boxing Day by becoming the first horse to win the King George VI Chase in four consecutive years.

The 14-time champion jockey renews rivalry with the dual Gold Cup hero aboard Albertas Run, on whom he was an eight-length runner-up to Kauto Star at Kempton last season.

But McCoy feels his mount, and the other 12 possible runners, face a hopeless task in trying to beat the Paul Nicholls-trained superstar.

“As we all know, Kauto Star is going to win,” declared McCoy, whose views can be heard on Betfred Talk from 11.30am every day until the end of December.

“He looks impossible to beat, but Albertas Run was a good second to him last year and hopefully that gives him a good chance of being in the money again.

“I can only see the weather upsetting Kauto Star. He’s an amazing horse to have achieved what he has – two Tingle Creeks over two miles, three King Georges and two Gold Cups. He’s an outstanding racehorse and will be very hard to beat.”

McCoy’s other high-profile mount on Boxing Day is Binocular, who aims to revive his Champion Hurdle claims in the Christmas Hurdle following his ‘Fighting Fifth’ flop last time out.

“Nicky Henderson is very happy with Binocular,” said McCoy. “Hopefully he will put his disappointing run at Newcastle behind him, we’ll see the real Binocular at Kempton and he will get back into the Champion Hurdle picture. I’m very hopeful he can get back to his best and I don’t see any reason why he can’t.

“I just don’t think he performed at Newcastle for whatever reason. I don’t think it was anything to do with the slow pace. I think he just wasn’t himself. We are all entitled to an off day, so hopefully that was his.”

Kauto Star has at least nine pounds in hand of his William Hill King George rivals, according to Timeform.

Paul Nicholls’ charge is 8-13 on Betfair to win the race for a fourth successive time and all his opposition in the race are very easy to back, with Imperial Commander next best on the exchange at 13-2.

And the good news is that the meeting remains a 1-4 chance to go ahead on Betfair, despite another sub-zero night for all in the UK.

Kieran Packman, Timeform’s spokesman, commented: “Kauto Star has firmly established himself in our eyes as the best staying chaser since Desert Orchid and it will be most fitting if he can match that horse’s outstanding record of four King George victories.

“His trio of wins at Kempton have been amongst the most visually impressive of his career and we expect another authoritative display. The closest challenger on ratings is his narrow Haydock victim Imperial Commander, but a small doubt persists about whether that horse can run to his very best on a right-handed course.”

To win the King George – Betfair bet: 8-13 Kauto Star, 13-2 Imperial Commander, 10-1 Madison Du Berlais, 17-1 Deep Purple, 22-1 Nacarat, 27-1 Barbers Shop, 29-1 Albertas Run , 84-1+ others

Will Racing Go Ahead at Kempton on 26th December – Betfair bet: 1-4 Yes, 3-1 No.

Kempton clerk of the course Barney Clifford was optimistic that the big two-day Christmas meeting would survive the cold weather that has hit Britain with a vengeance in the past week.

Clifford said on Monday evening: “We’re raceable and, while we have a forecast indicating that overnight temperatures will be as low as -3C over the next two nights, we expect temperatures to rise heading towards Christmas and Boxing Day, which makes us very optimistic.

“We are set to have a high of between 5C and 6C on Boxing Day and, given that forecast, we do not foresee any problems.”
This is an excellent tribute to Kauto Star….
