Charlie McCann’s Boxing Day Preview (But Will They Race?)

At the time of writing StanJames.com are betting 11/8 that racing takes place at Kempton on Boxing Day and 4/7 it doesn’t. Let’s hope the forecast thaw for Boxing Day allows racing to go ahead as history promises to be made as Kauto Star bids to win the feature William Hill King George VI Chase for an unprecedented fifth year in a row. Note if the Boxing Day card is lost the King George & Xmas Hurdle will be run on Monday 27th weather permitting.

King George 2010

Kauto Star goes to Kempton for 5

Newly crowned Sports Personality of the Year AP McCoy takes the mount on the dual former Gold Cup winner following the injuries to first Ruby Walsh and more recently Noel Fehily. On official figures Kauto Star has to be merely pointed in the right direction to win but why are the bookmakers fielding against him?

Time waits for no one and Kauto Star will be 11 on January 1st and it is almost eight years since he made his racecourse debut. He had not jumped with his usual zest when falling four out in this year’s Gold Cup, and he didn’t impress everyone with the manner of his comeback success at Down Royal last month when he had 4lengths to spare over Sizing Europe. AP McCoy has never ridden the horse before but that is hardly an issue given the horse has hardly made the semblance of a mistake in any of his 4 previous victories in this great race.

Kauto Star (3.00) may not be as good as he once was but it is only 12 months ago that he, arguably, put up a career best performance when landing the corresponding race by no less than 36 lengths and with bullish noises coming out of the Paul Nicholls’ camp I feel history will be made. The great Desert Orchid fell in the 1991 King George in his bid for a fifth win but I take Kauto Star to go one better and to join the greats of the sport.

The Xmas Hurdle is the other feature race on the card with Champion Hurdler Binocular (2.25) looking to get back to winning ways having finished third on his reappearance in the StanJames.com Fighting Fifth at Newbury last month. One got the impression that Binocular would improve greatly for his reappearance and despite again finishing behind Starluck in the corresponding race last year won by Go Native Binocular can return to winning ways and the head of the market for the Stan James Champion Hurdle in March.

Secret World (12.40) looked a doubtful stayer at Newbury on his Hurdle debut but is likely to be played later by jockey Barry Geraghty this time and he can make the most of the weight he receives from Toubab who was such an impressive winner at Haydock last time.

Aiteen Thirtythree has never run right-handed but has looked a novice chaser of some potential to date but marginal preference is for Master Of The Hall (1.50) who looked worth following when beating Fredo at Ascot on his first start over the larger obstacles last month.

Our Bob (3.35) has had problems with his wind but he won’t be the only one over the Festive season. He jumped and travelled like easily the best horse in the race at Haydock last month but went out like a light. He is unlikely to reach the heights he once suggested he was going to in Ireland when trained by Willie Mullins but the hope is that the excellent Philip Hobbs can coax a little bit of improvement from his first run. If that is a case he could be extremely well-handicapped. Swansbrook looks the danger in a cracking finale.

Kauto Star Goes Straight For The King George

A £20,000 bet was amongst the first wagers fielded by the sponsors following the news that four-time William Hill King George VI Chase winner Kauto Star will miss the Hennessy target to instead concentrate on sealing an historic fifth win in the Boxing Day highlight.

Kauto Star goes to Kempton

It was clearly the news that punters were waiting for as immediately after Champion trainer Paul Nicholls, and owner Clive Smith ruled the star out of the Newbury handicap money began to flow for his King George bid.

William Hill were forced to trim the the ten-year-old – likely to be ridden by Noel Fehily – into 11-8 from 6-4. His shortest price since being quoted at 5-2 after his fourth win last year.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’This was clearly what everyone wanted to hear before showing the colour of their King George money. And right now, it’s brightly coloured in purple, yellow, and green as punters of all shapes and sizes show their support of King Kauto in cash.’’

Nacarat enters William Hill King George Reckoning

It was a grey for payday for a burgeoning West Yorkshire crowd as 2009′s Racing Post Chase-scorer Nacarat collared himself the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby on Saturday.

Tom George’s nine-year-old settled behind dual winner Ollie Magern before taking it up at the straight – and the fast-and-furious front-runner refused to capitulate his lead, recording a four-length victory under Sam Thomas.

Fourth in last year’s William Hill King George, the sponsors reacted by installing the gelding in at 12-1 to reap top-class Kempton rewards this Boxing Day, where the flamboyant grey will bid to take the scalp of 7-4 favourite Kauto Star – looking to make history with a fifth win in the historic race.

William Hill spokeswoman, Lucy Rhodes, said: ‘’What a fantastic way to splash into the National Hunt season proper with a scintillating win for Nacarat. So far Kauto has owned Sunbury’s showpiece event, but we could be looking at a White Christmas if Nacarat turns on the style like he did today.’’

National Hunt legend Kauto Star has been priced-up as a 5-2 by the sponsors to win a fifth consecutive William Hill King George at Kempton on Boxing Day 2010.

Kauto Star looks for afifth King George

William Hill retain their faith in the crack chaser following his Gold Cup disappointment at Cheltenham placing him at the head of the betting ahead of 6-1 second-favourite Long Run, and Gold Cup victor Imperial Commander who is available as 8-1 third-favourite.

Henrietta Knight’s Somersby caught attention with his fast-finishing second in the Arkle Chase, and is available at 12-1 with Hills for the King George – having already attracted ante-post money for the 2011 Gold Cup.

Other notable contenders include RSA Chase winner Weapons Amnesty (14-1), and Ditcheat stablemates Neptune Collonges and What A Friend both available at 16-1.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’Four times now Kauto Star has proved his affinity for Kempton – and despite the fact he’ll be rising eleven in December, it would be foolhardy of us to dismiss his chances of making it five on the bounce in one of National Hunt Racing’s greatest races.’’

Four King George's for Kauto Star

Kauto Star will now grace the record books as the only horse to win four successive renewals of the Boxing Day highlight – outflanking the famous grey Desert Orchid who made Kempton his own with four non-consecutive wins last century.

David Hood, spokesman for William Hill, said: ‘’Kauto Star can now boast ‘legend’ status after his fourth consecutive win, and his victory has rounded off an incredible year for the industry.  Financially it won’t be pretty, but cost to the bookies is irrelevant as today will be a day that Racing remembers forever. ‘’

William Hill – proud sponsors of the King George VI Chase now offer odds of 6-4 that Kauto Star can round-off his amazing career with a fifth win in 2010. Hills have also promoted the nine-year-old to 7-4 from 9-4 favourite for next March’s Cheltenham Gold Cup, where he stands above his stable mate Denman in the betting.

Winner of the Betfair Chase- Kauto Star

A field of thirteen will start in this Saturday’s William Hill King George VI Chase – the biggest line-up that crack chaser Kauto Star has faced in his three Kempton wins.

Paul Nicholls’s charge remains the 4-7 favourite with sponsors Hills, ahead of 6-1 second-favourite Imperial Commander, and 9-1 chance Madison du Berlais. Punters remain positive about the favourite with ‘Kauto fever’ still rife amongst British bettors, whilst Deep Purple Barbers Shop, and Master Medic are all proving the each-way picks.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’ Betting impetus remains firmly behind Kauto Star with each-way money now strong for Barbers Shop, Deep Purple, and also Master Medic. Surprisingly, Imperial Commander has proved friendless in the last few days, with punters swerving him entirely for Saturday.’’

Seven runners will go to post in the Williamhill.com Christmas Hurdle – the middle highlight of three Grade Ones at the Middlesex track this Saturday – where Binocular heads the betting as 6-5 favourite with sponsors William Hill.

The JP McManus-owned hurdler just tops the market with Hills ahead of his Newcastle victor Go Native who is the 13-8 second-favourite for the Grade One event.

Starluck makes his eagerly anticipated return to Kempton – where 12 months ago the four-year-old leapt to prominence after an 11-length victory. Alan Fleming’s charge is available at 7-1 with Hills with the classy novice Pepe Simo thereafter at 9-1.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’This was a real test to price-up with so many factors to consider with the main contenders. With his record, and a course and distance win to his name Binocular just takes favouritism from Go Native, but even Starluck, and the unexposed Pepe Simo cannot be discounted.’’

Kauto Star Ready for King George Says Nicholls

Paul Nicholls reports Kauto Star to be thriving ahead of his date with destiny in the William Hill King George VI Chase at Kempton on Saturday week. The dual Cheltenham Gold Cup hero will be bidding to emulate Desert Orchid by winning the Grade One Boxing Day feature for a remarkable fourth time.

The nine-year-old was made to pull out all the stops by Imperial Commander when claiming his third Betfair Chase at Haydock last month, but Nicholls feels his charge is an improved horse.

Kauto Star worked with Big Buck’s on Wednesday morning and all went very well,” said Nicholls. He’s come on a ton for Haydock. I’m not saying he wasn’t fit, but it has mentally sharpened him up. He will do a bit more on Saturday morning, school next week and then have his final workout on Thursday.”

You may find this interesting;

The current cold snap is forcing to wreak potential havoc on the fixture list, but Kempton’s clerk of the course Brian Clifford is confident the William Hill Winter Festival meeting will beat the elements, with a mild Christmas Day forecast.

“We are raceable this afternoon and are deploying the frost covers as a precautionary measure,” Clifford said on Thursday.

“The forecast for the next four or five days is not good, with five to 10 centimetres of snow due to fall and overnight temperatures of around minus three.

“Temperatures are due to rise from Christmas Day into Boxing Day, so we are very optimistic.”

Ground conditions at Kempton are currently described as good to soft.

Can Kauto Star Land Another King George?

Kauto Star was made for Kempton but will have to overcome Imperial Commander who he beat by a nose at Haydock last time if he is to land a fourth King George on Boxing Day.

The market says that Kauto Star will win The King George. He is odds on to win the Kempton show piece on Boxing day.

William Hill have stepped in to Sponsor The King George VI Chase at Kempton. They have announced a four year, five Million Pound deal to sponsor the whole meeting at Kempton which will now be called the William Hill Winter Festival.

This is great news for racing!

David Hood, Director of racing for William Hill, said: “It’s with great pleasure that I announce this deal.

“Kempton has undoubtedly the most innovative, forward-thinking racing team in the UK.

“I don’t say that lightly, and it was one of the encouraging factors to get involved.

“It’s a seven-figure deal over four years. I’m not disclosing the full figures, but the total prize-money is in excess of £5million – but that’s not all from the contribution of Hills.”

Ralph Topping, chief executive of William Hill, commented: ”The sponsorship of this historic and prestigious event affords William Hill the opportunity to enhance our portfolio of great betting races for the general public, whilst strengthening our loyalty to racing during a difficult financial period.

“We are proud to be associated with a race synonymous with so many famous racehorses. Amongst them; the unforgettable Desert Orchid, Arkle himself, and triple King George winner Kauto Star.”

“We are committed to working with Kempton Park to enhance the Winter Festival meeting and look forward to working with this dynamic team throughout the next four years.”
