Gordon Brown

8:20 Kempton, Boom and Bust, Win. Gordon Brown said he had abolished boom and bust, but it is flourishing here. Kieren Fallon is an eyecatching booking for Boom And Bust as he makes his handicap debut at Kempton. The three-year-old will also be having his first start on the all-weather in the Olly Murs Live On Ladies Day Handicap but he looks a horse with some ability judged on his two starts to date.   Well beaten on his initial maiden outing at Windsor, Boom And Bust showed plenty of improvement to right that statistic back at that track last time. In a complete turnaround from the waiting tactics employed on his first start, Martin Dwyer was positive from the off and the son of Footstepsinthesand responded to his every call to hang on by a head at the line. That was only a moderate event and the handicapper’s initial mark of 72 does look too harsh at this stage and with Fallon booked, trainer Marcus Tregoning will be expecting a bold show.

One bet, thats all.

Cumani Set for Tilt at Wokingham and Royal Hunt Cup

CUMANI HOLDS ANOTHER ASCOT HOPE AS HILLS OPEN BETTING ON THE WOKINGHAM & ROYAL HUNT CUP

Leading bookmakers William Hill today opened betting on two of the season’s most competitive handicaps – the Wokingham, and the Royal Hunt Cup. The stable now has Fallon riding for it!

Horseracing News and Tips

Fallon Rides for Fallon

In the Royal Hunt Cup –handicap wizard Luca Cumani predictably holds a number of entries spearheaded by the 10-1 ante-post favourite Mabait. Despite numerous attempts, Cumani has failed to secure the Hunt Cup since the glory days of Towar and Dallas in the 80s, but this year holds a quartet of entries with the lightly-raced duo of Acrostic, and Forte Dei Marmi (16-1), with 25-1 chance Axiom making up the foursome.

Sir Michael Stoute’s Enact and recent York winner Ingleby Lady jointly head the betting with Hills as 12-1 joint-favourites in the Wokingham, just ahead of 14-1 chances Johannes and William Hill Ayr Silver Cup winner Kaldoun Kingdom.

William Haggas – victorious with the smart High Standing last year – holds an entry with Bonnie Charlie whom Hills have installed at 20-1 for the famous six-furlong dash.

Other trainers to have had success in the event are the likes of Richard Hannon, who in both 1990 and 1994 won the race with Venture Capitalist and Knight of Mercy respectively; and holds an entry 20-1 chance Edge Closer.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: “These two handicaps are fraught with danger for the bookies with an abundance of lightly-raced sorts with ‘big handicaps’ written all over them. Cumani, as always bring a wealth of chances into the Hunt Cup, whilst the Wokingham boasts entries from a number of top yards bidding for Royal Ascot glory.’’

Wokingham Handicap: (William Hill bet): 12-1 Enact, Ingleby Lady, 14-1 Johannes, Kaldoun Kingdom, 16-1 Al Khaleej, Bagamoyo, Genki, Jimmy Styles, Masamah, Redford, 20-1 Bonnie Charlie, Brae Hill, Edge Closer, Hawkeyethenoo, Hitchens, Laddies Poker Two, Medicean Man, Palace Moon, Rain Delayed, Wildcat Wizard, 25-1 BAR (E/W ¼ 1,2,3,4)

Royal Hunt Cup(William Hill bet) 10-1 Mabait, 12-1 Dandy Boy,14-1 Fareer, Riggins, 16-1 Acrostic, Al Khaleej, Balcarce Nov, Bangalore Gold, Docofthebay, Forgotten Voice, Fortei Dei Marmi, Last Three Minutes, 20-1 Cityscape, Invisible Man, Lovelace, Marajaa, Mull Of Killough, St Moritz, Stoic, Supaseus, Suruor, Tartan Gigha, Tiger Reigns, Tryst, 33-1 Bar (E/W ¼ 1,2,3,4)

St Nicholas Abbey Heads Field of 19 for 2000 Guineas

Aidan O’Brien’s red-hot favourite St Nicholas Abbey heads a field of 19 runners declared for Saturday’s StanJames.com 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. You can get our betting preview by clicking HERE.

The Montjeu colt was unbeaten in three starts as a juvenile, culminating in a clear-cut success over Elusive Pimpernel in the Racing Post Trophy last autumn. He is one of three contenders from O’Brien’s Ballydoyle base, with Fencing Master and Viscount Nelson also taking their chance.

John Dunlop’s Elusive Pimpernel reopposes following his Craven Stakes success, while Richard Hannon sends Canford Cliffs and Dick Turpin. Godolphin field two runners, with Al Zir hailing from Saeed bin Suroor’s yard. Buzzword is a first Classic runner for second trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni. Mark Johnston is also double-handed as Middle Park Stakes winner Awzaan and multiple all-weather scorer Greyfriarschorista bid to supplement Mister Baileys’ victory for the handler back in 1994.

Xtension, third in the Dewhurst last year, represents Clive Cox, while Pat Eddery will be hoping Hearts Of Fire can bag him his first Classic as a trainer. The line-up is completed by John Best’s pair of Inler and Elspeth’s Boy, Audacity Of Hope, Fair Trade, Lord Zenith, Red Jazz and sole French raider Makfi.

Johnny Murtagh will be aboard St Nicholas Abbey, with Colm O’Donoghue riding Fencing Master. Those arrangements mean that six-times champion Kieren Fallon can renew his association with O’Brien aboard alleged third string Viscount Nelson. Fallon was stable jockey at Ballydoyle for a number of years but he has not partnered on an O’Brien-trained runner since Dylan Thomas won the 2007 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

“It’s exciting to be back riding for Coolmore and Aidan O’Brien,” he told the Daily Mail. It’s a jockey’s dream. They have the best horses in the world and are great people to ride for. I never thought about whether I’d ride for them again, all I think about is riding as many winners as I can. We all know what Aidan can do and, on the big day, he is the trainer everyone wants to ride for. Viscount Nelson is not just making up the numbers. He is by Giant’s Causeway and out of (2001 Oaks winner) Imagine. He has a fantastic pedigree and was just beaten in the Group Two Champagne Stakes.”

St Nicholas Abbey is drawn in stall 12 of the 19 runners, with Dick Turpin and Greyfriarschorista on either side. Elusive Pimpernel will break from stall one, the same draw as last year’s winner Sea The Stars, with Awzaan on his outside. Canford Cliffs will be in gate four for Richard Hughes, with Buzzword in 19 – although the stalls are placed in the centre of the track for the Guineas. Awzaan was unbeaten in four starts over six furlongs last term, including his defeat of top-class Norfolk Stakes winner Radiohead at Newmarket on his final outing.

Great News- Fallon is Fine

Kieren Fallon has been given a clean bill of health following a nasty incident in the paddock at Newbury on Friday.

Horseracing News and Tips

Fallon Rides on Saturday

The six-times champion jockey was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital after being kicked in the build-up to the Bridget Maiden Fillies’ Stakes. Fallon was about to take the mount aboard Mick Channon’s Ayam Zainah when Alioonagh bolted, causing mayhem in the paddock.

The Matthew Salaman-trained daughter of Giant’s Causeway upset several of her rivals and caused Fallon’s mount to kick out in alarm and strike the jockey. The 45-year-old fell to the ground and lay at the side of the parade ring surrounded by black screens while being attended to by medical staff.

Initial fears of a break to his leg proved unfounded as precautionary X-rays came back clear and Fallon’s agent Dave Pollington is not expecting the rider to spend too long on the sidelines.

“There’s nothing broken and he’s been discharged from hospital,” confirmed Pollington. He’s left hospital, the X-rays have all come back clear and he just has some severe bruising. I don’t know whether he will be riding on Saturday or when he will be back, we haven’t got that far yet. You know Kieren though, he will be back just as soon as it is possible.”

Alioonagh was being led around the parade ring by two handlers before bolting, and she later played up at the start causing her withdrawal from the seven-furlong race.

Chris Catlin took over from Fallon aboard Channon’s filly and she went on to fill 10th place. Channon said:

“She’s an absolute pussycat at home and would never normally kick out. She became upset by the loose horse running past and has kicked out and hit Kieren.”

Weekend Dec’s Make Interesting Reading

Saturday’s delarations for Newmarket make interesting reading and should provide a great day of racing with top class racing and some very good horses running. The headlines are;

  • Kieren Fallon replaces Jimmy Fortune aboard High Twelve in the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday.
  • Dewhurst Stakes contest and Chabal will make his final start for the trainer this weekend before joining the Godolphin team.
  • Fame And Glory heads a field of 14 for the Group 1 Emirates Airline Champion Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday.
  • Michael Bell’s dual-Oaks winning filly Sariska, who will be partnered by Kieren Fallon provides the main Champion Stakes opposition.
  • Finjaan, as short as 4/1 favourite for the Victor Chandler Challenge Stakes at Newmarket, misses Saturday’s race.
  • Nanton heads a maximum field for Saturday’s totesport.com Cesarewitch at Newmarket.
  • Johnny Murtagh has been confirmed as the jockey for Sereth in Saturday’s totesport.com Cesarewitch at Newmarket for Barnet Curley.

Fallon Upbeat on Sariska Champion Bid

Kieren Fallon can see no reason why Sariska should not be competitive in her first race against the colts in Saturday’s Emirates Airline Champion Stakes at Newmarket.  Jamie Spencer is suspended so the former champion jockey has picked up the ride on Oaks winner Sariska.

Sariska for Champions Stakes

Sariska for Champions Stakes

Fallon says: “It’s always difficult for the fillies when they are taking on the colts, but she is exceptional, Ouija Board was able to do it and I can’t see why this filly shouldn’t be able to either, as long as she gets her ground of course. There is not much rain around so I hope they put plenty of water on. She seems to act better with a bit of cut in the ground but it was fast at York when she was just beaten by Dar Re Mi by three-quarters of a length and I think that is good form. It should be decent ground, they are looking after it well and there is a good covering of grass. We walk across it when we go to work down there, it looks in good nick,” he told At the Races.

Latest prices; Emirates Airline Champion Stakes: 5-4 Fame and Glory, 4-1 Sariska, 6-1 Mawatheeq, 8-1 Never On Sunday, Pipedreamer, 10-1 Twice Over, 12-1 Doctor Fremantle, 16-1 Crystal Capella, 20-1 Alpine Rose, 25-1 Campanologist, Virtual,  66-1 Balius, Barshiba, City Leader, 100-1 Forgotten Voice, 500-1 Grand Ducal, Set Sail  (EW 1/4 1,2,3)

Racing Diary Says;

If it rains and comes up very soft she has a huge chance, Fame and Glory looks the one to be on, but has he come out of the Arc well? If Aidan O’Brien thinks so then thats good enough for us!

Back on the winning trail at Newcastle

By Carl Harris

By Carl Harris

After some good results last week the weekend and the start of the new week has been disastrous. I’m rarely down for long!

I am also under the weather and could do with the tonic of a couple of winners. Having looked at the cards for Tuesday, which features jumping at Huntingdon and flat racing at Leicester, I am looking for a couple of winners at Newcastle.

To be fair the racing is not very good at the minute, indeed there are many pro-punters who have effectively shut up shop, as they do every year, until November. I can see their reasons for doing so, certainly looking at this week’s cards were my children not in school I would be on a beach somewhere. Sadly though I’m not and am here feeling ill watching moderate horseracing on the box.

2.50 Newcastle- Milton Of Campsie, Win

The old adage of always follow a filly in form has paid handsome dividends in the shape of  Milton of Campsie (14,50) who goes north in search of a four timer. The booking of Kieren Fallon for the four year-old looks significant and is definitely taken as a positive. Last time out at Ayr John Keats was behind in third, but close enough to pose a threat here, that said he was apprentice ridden that day and seven pounds extra is carried today which sufficiently diminishes the threat in my view.  Given the form I think we are getting exceptional value with Milton of Campsie.

3.50 Newcastle- Astrodiva, Win (NAP)

The best bet of the day for me is Astrodiva (15,50) who has found a maiden of such low quality that she probably will never run in a worse race that this. Though no world beater Mark Tompkins has hit the jackpot  by finding a race where his filly is so far clear of the field that she should win on the bridle. These sort of races often afford backers some value as layers look to get the hitherto unreliable favourite beaten. It would be a turn up if Astrodiva is not seen in the winners enclosure this afternoon. I suggest she is the best bet of the day.

Audacity of Hope at Newmarket…

Very good cards on Friday with Ayr, Newbury and Newmarket with an all-weather card at Wolverhampton tonight. The three afternoon cards are highly competitive and kick off a very good weekend. On Saturday we have the Ayr Gold Cup and Mill Reef Stakes to deal with, I am looking forward to it immensely. Radiohead stands out in the Mill Reef at this stage, but we will look at that in detail tomorrow.

It’s the Ayr Bronze Cup on Friday, the consolation race for horses that missed out on the Ayr Gold Cup. A tough race, but one where I will be looking to see if there is any draw and track bias ahead of the main event on Saturday.I once again am sidestepping Ayr’s card today in favour of Newbury and Newmarket.

2.45 Newbury- Campanologist, Win

Campanologist (2.45) runs in the Godolphin blue who are in such good form that it is a brave man who opposes them. This race is a group three, but I would suggest its title as an Arc trial is somewhat misleading. Campanologist was a group three winner at Windsor last time out having been consistent in group company all season. With rider and trainer in such good form I think Campanologist is a solid bet in a very good race at Newbury. A Campanologist is the posh name for bell ringing, this one certainly rings my bell here!

3.05 Newmarket- Audacity of Hope, Win

I love Audacity of Hope (3.05) as a name for a horse. Last week at Doncaster he was given a great ride to win under Kieren Fallon who is back aboard today with a six pounds penalty. I think that he can defy the extra weight in this small field. Newmarket is a course that should suit and ground conditions should mirror those at Doncaster last week. All the boxes are ticked and backers can have the audacity to hope for another win, in my view.

One punter had £7,000 on Fallon at 3/1 as soon as Strike The Deal, the second leg of his double, had crossed the line.

Paddy Power said, “Poor old Strike The Deal hadn’t even had a drink when they started piling into his jockey to be Champion again!  Not that we needed reminding, but the king is back”.
