Nicky Henderson reaches 2,000-winner mark with Punchestowns at Kempton

A wonderful trainer hits 2000 winners, a look at Nicky Henderson’s 2000 winners at kempton on Friday….

Powered by Guardian.co.ukThis article titled “Nicky Henderson reaches 2,000-winner mark with Punchestowns at Kempton” was written by Chris Cook at Kempton, for The Guardian on Friday 11th February 2011 20.00 UTC

For the second time in four weeks Nicky Henderson made slow progress back to the winner’s enclosure here, stopping every two paces to have his hand shaken and his back slapped. This fixture was much less exalted than the day last month when he won his first King George with Long Run but the occasion of his 2,000th success as a jumps trainer appeared to give him a similar amount of pleasure.

No doubt the thrill had something to do with the improbable manner of Punchestowns’ victory, the chestnut rallying from 10 lengths behind at the home turn to take the lead from Pasco by the final fence. The trainer may have been braced for defeat, after his well-backed According had flopped in the opener and his Zazamix had managed only a place in the beginners’ chase.

“It’s been a bit drip, drip this week,” said Henderson, who would have reached the landmark sooner but for a series of beaten favourites since Sunday as well as an unlucky “brought-down” at Taunton on Thursday. Clearly relieved that he had not had to endure a long winnerless spell on the brink of 2,000, he added: “It’s a milestone which, if you went back 32 years, you’d have said was fairly unlikely.”

Based in Lambourn throughout his career, Henderson served as assistant trainer to Fred Winter for four years before taking out his own licence in 1978. Though he has been champion only twice, and not since 1987, he is one of only a handful of men to have trained so many winners, including Martin Pipe and Arthur Stephenson. Paul Nicholls, the current champion, is less than 100 behind, having started more than a decade after Henderson.

It was appropriate that this achievement should be sealed at Kempton, a track which has always been fruitful for the 60-year-old, providing him with more winners than any other in the past five years. “The going here is usually better than at most places and that seems to suit our horses more than soft ground, I don’t know why,” he said.

As has become his habit, Henderson is trying to get through February without indulging in alcohol and he said that discipline would be maintained, despite this obvious cause for celebration. “I’ll probably take the boys out for a drink and have a water or something.”

Stronger stuff will be in order next month if he manages to draw level with Fulke Walwyn’s record of 40 winners at the Cheltenham Festival. Henderson is three shy of that mark but has so many fancied contenders for the meeting that it is by no means difficult to imagine him closing the gap this year.

But, despite yesterday’s result, it is doubtful whether Punchestowns will return there, having been well beaten on his two previous attempts over Cheltenham’s fences. Henderson ruled out the Ryanair, on the grounds that the eight-year-old needs three miles, but did not seem tempted by the Gold Cup and indicated that he may save his horse for the Totesport Bowl at Aintree’s Grand National meeting.

Today the trainer tries to win his fifth Totesport Trophy at Newbury, fielding two fancied runners and an outsider. Solix, having his first run since being brought over from France, is “really a chaser for next year” but Henderson makes encouraging noises about Soldatino and Eradicate, both of whom are said to be fitter for recent outings in which they finished well beaten.

In Riverside Theatre and French Opera Henderson has lively contenders for the other two major races on the Newbury card, but his attention will be divided, as he also sends Finian’s Rainbow to Warwick. Currently favourite for Cheltenham’s Arkle Trophy, the horse faces a small but talented field in the Kingmaker Novices Chase.

Paul Nicholls achieved a Kempton double, including a novice hurdle win with Rebel Rebellion, who has clearly responded well to a wind operation and is thought to be a useful chasing prospect for next season. But the trainer had bad news of Woolcombe Folly, who will not line up for today’s Game Spirit Chase at Newbury.

“He worked brilliantly yesterday morning but he coughed a couple of times afterwards,” Nicholls said. A tracheal wash turned out to be “filthy” and the horse will be rested, though he is still thought likely to take part in the Champion Chase at the Festival.

Bangor is off, but some good jumping today at Kempton where American Trilogy (2:05) can get the better of this small field and land another winner for the Paul Nicholls yard. This is a beginners chase and with a rating of 152, at one stage, over fences he is entitled to win this, if jumping goes to plan. We know Patsy Finnegan can jump and that Zazamix from the Henderson yard will put up a bold show. Not easy nut a good bet in my view!

Now Punchestowns (3:45) is interesting. I would not back it at this price, but it is interesting that a horse with such talent over hurdles has struggled of late. This is a horse Mick Fitzgerald once described as a future Gold Cup Winner, so we really hope that he can get his career back on track. To be fair Pasco and Crack Away Jack are also horse with a once lofty reputation and I think this is an interesting race.

I hear that Cheltenian (4:55) is strongly fancied at Kempton to go one better than when second at Punchestown. Sicnce moved to Philip Hobbs I hear this is a decent horse, VERY STRONGLY FANCIED! Evens is short but from what I hear it should win readily!

Good Luck!

Transformer (6:50) is in good form and can win at Kempton. He won at Lingfield last time out and is improving. In what looks a pretty modest contest where his five opponents have little winning form to speak of, Transformer looks the standout bet on the Kempton card.

Advertisement (7:20) can do just that for the talents of his trainer Jeremy Noseda who could have a very big 2011 on turf. An impressive winner at Lingfield last time out he looks more than capable of defying a 5lb rise in the weights. The excellent George Baker takes the ride and a reproduction of the Lingfield run will make Advertisement very difficult to beat today.

Good luck.

Wednesday’s Horseracing Preview

It looks a good day of horseracing on Wednesday with jumping at Huntingdon and Musselburgh. There is also flat action at Kempton and Lingfield. Free Horseracing Tips from Racing Diary….

All Weather action at Lingfield and Kempton

I like But Beautiful (7:35 Kempton) who will complete three wins in a row should she win tonight despite being hiked up five pounds by the handicapper. As a daughter of Pivotal she certainly is bred to do the job and with improvement she is probably well weighted again here.

Over jumps Huntingdon is where the best card is staged. Buckie Boy (1:45) is a Nicky Henderson newcomer who has been the subject of some good reports, as are many from Seven Barrows! This could be one to keep an eye on for the future.

Henderson could complete a double with Master of the Hall (3:15) who looks to be in a match bet with Voramar Two who has been second in all of his last three starts. I am always suspisious of horses who repeatedly finish second and with the Nicky Henderson yard in such good form I am firmly with Master of the Hall here.

Kauto Star unchanged for King George after satisfactory reappearance

What a great sight it was to see Kauto Star back in action and jumping well this afternoon. He needed the run it seems but jumped well and will come on for it. Can he now lift a fifth King George on Boxing Day? 46 days away, that is all!

Kauto Star remains unchanged at 7/4 with totesport for the William Hill King George VI Chase after recapturing the JNwine.com Champion Chase at Down Royal, a race he last won in 2008 en route to Cheltenham glory.

Kauto Star

King George next for Kauto Star

The two-time Gold Cup winner travelled comfortably throughout most of the contest but had to pull out plenty up the home straight, eventually scoring by four lengths from last year’s Arkle victor Sizing Europe. Henry de Bromhead’s charge stepped up plenty from his first run of the season and has been chalked up at 20/1 for Gold Cup glory next March.

‘Although Kauto Star didn’t show all his customary sparkle today, Kempton is the target and we would not be surprised if he put up another five-star performance to land an unprecedented fifth King George on Boxing Day’ said totesport spokesman Andrew Griffiths.

The following race provided Paul Nicholls with a quick-fire double as The Nightingale landed the Ladbrokes.com Chase with ease. Prior to the race his trainer stated the horse is unlikely to be campaigned on left hand courses so has been given a cautious 25/1 quote for the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Back on home turf, the champion trainer looks to have another promising horse on his hands as Dolatulo handed out a 23-length beating to his rivals in the Blue Square Exclusive Live Shows Juvenile Hurdle at Sandown. The three-year old never came off the bridle and is the new 14/1 favourite (from 33/1) for the JCB Triumph Hurdle with the Wigan-based firm.

Times Up scuppers hopes of totescoop6 punters

This afternoon’s totescoop6 was not won which means there is a total of £137,988 that rolls over in the win fund whilst the bonus pot now stands at £59,137.

Only 6,231 remained after the first leg and a mere five heading into the fourth leg – the totesport.com November Handicap – but none were on eventual winner Times Up whilst means the bet rolls over for the second successive weekend.

‘Competitive racing at both Doncaster and Wincanton meant this afternoon’s Scoop6 was always going to be tough and it proved to be the case but around £300,000 could be up for grabs next weekend when all eyes will be on Cheltenham’s Open meeting,’ said totepool spokesman George Primarolo.

A total of £199,068 was bet into the pool this afternoon and there were only 9 winners of the place dividend, each of whom picks up a whopping £4,423.70.

Nacarat enters William Hill King George Reckoning

It was a grey for payday for a burgeoning West Yorkshire crowd as 2009′s Racing Post Chase-scorer Nacarat collared himself the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby on Saturday.

Tom George’s nine-year-old settled behind dual winner Ollie Magern before taking it up at the straight – and the fast-and-furious front-runner refused to capitulate his lead, recording a four-length victory under Sam Thomas.

Fourth in last year’s William Hill King George, the sponsors reacted by installing the gelding in at 12-1 to reap top-class Kempton rewards this Boxing Day, where the flamboyant grey will bid to take the scalp of 7-4 favourite Kauto Star – looking to make history with a fifth win in the historic race.

William Hill spokeswoman, Lucy Rhodes, said: ‘’What a fantastic way to splash into the National Hunt season proper with a scintillating win for Nacarat. So far Kauto has owned Sunbury’s showpiece event, but we could be looking at a White Christmas if Nacarat turns on the style like he did today.’’

All Weather tips from Kempton

8:10 Kempton Loden, Win. Those in attendance at Kempton on September 22 will no doubt vouch for the claims of Loden upon his return to Sunbury. Luca Cumani’s colt ran a remarkable race on his last start as his saddle slipped about a mile from home in a competitive little handicap. Despite that hindrance, JP Guillambert did exceedingly well to keep the partnership on the straight and narrow. What followed was even more extraordinary as Loden scampered clear and was only headed inside the final 150 yards, eventually finishing third. It can only be assumed that if the saddle had not gone west, he would have won doing handstands. That game display also underscored his aptitude for middle distances as, before that, he had only ever competed over no farther than a mile. The digibet.com Handicap, in which he is just 3lb higher in the weights, looks ideal for this son of Barathea, who has a stamina-laden pedigree and very few miles on the clock.
