Ruby Walsh back on Kauto Star for first time since jockey broke a leg

Ruby Walsh, who could be back in racing action later this week, rode out at Paul Nicholls’s yard on Monday for the first time since breaking a leg in a fall last November. Walsh schooled several high-profile horses, including Kauto Star, Master Minded and Big Buck’s, though he has yet to confirm whether he will return to race-riding at Taunton on Thursday or delay his comeback until the weekend.

The sight of Walsh flying fences at Ditcheat will give the champion trainer a sense that everything is coming together ahead of the Cheltenham Festival, which opens in 14 days’ time. Sam Winner, a possible runner in the Triumph Hurdle, was also schooled by Walsh, while the trainer’s Zarkandar, a winner at Kempton on Saturday, was a major mover in the market for the same race.

In addition to schooling his current champion, Nicholls has also taken delivery of another interesting new recruit, Crack Away Jack, the 2008 Fred Winter Hurdle winner, news which amounts to a disappointing setback for Emma Lavelle, the horse’s former trainer.

Crack Away Jack’s success at the Festival three years ago was Lavelle’s first at the meeting and though he missed most of last season through injury after making a promising start to his career as a novice chaser, Lavelle always felt he had the potential to reach championship standard over fences.

“He’s been disappointing since he came back from his injury and his owner, Danny Charlesworth, thought a change of scenery might help,” Lavelle told the Racing Post. “I wish Danny and the horse the best of luck for the future.”

Crack Away Jack does not hold any major entries and is not expected to race again this season, but he will have a wind operation and return in the autumn.

Festival preparations in Ireland continued at Leopardstown on Monday, when Pandorama and Big Zeb, the defending two-mile champion chaser, both had workouts on the track. Pandorama, the winner of the Lexus Chase, is a top-priced 20-1 chance with totesport for the Gold Cup and will lead a smaller Festival team than usual from Noel Meade’s yard.

“Everything went perfect,” Meade said. “He worked great. I was delighted with him, absolutely thrilled. He went about a mile and seven, almost two miles, with six others, Realt Dubh as well, and I was very happy with both of them.

“They’ll have one more bit of work next week and then that should be it. I might give Pandorama a school over fences at some stage this week at home.”

Big Zeb also schooled well under his regular jockey, Barry Geraghty. “He popped a line of fences and he was very good,” Colm Murphy, his trainer, said.

Kauto cut for Gold Cup as punters begin to overlook King George flop

Kauto Star has been cut to 8/1 (from 10/1) by the sponsors for the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup as punters begin to overlook his disappointing run in the King George VI Chase last weekend.

Kauto Star

Paul Nicholls’ revelation that the horse has been suffering from a ‘low grade infection’ has seen support for the two-time Gold Cup winner as he aims to bounce back to make it a hat-trick in the Cheltenham showpiece. As a result of this support, Imperial Commander has eased at the head of the market to 7/2 (from 3/1).

“Kauto Star’s King George performance has polarised opinion but punters clearly thought the 10/1 represented value as he’s been well-supported for the Gold Cup since he was found to be suffering from an infection,” said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Master Minded will face eight rivals in the Victor Chandler Chase at Ascot for which he is the 4/7 favourite with totesport. Somersby is next in the market at 8/1 and also heads the market without the favourite at 7/2.

King Fontaine and Maktu have been installed as the 11/2 joint-favourites for the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock on Saturday by totesport with Becauseicouldntsee and Buffalo Bob both at 13/2.

The Frank Ward Solicitors Arkle Chase and the BHP Insurances Irish Champion Hurdle are the highlights of a cracking card at Leopardstown on Sunday and Quel Esprit and Realt Dubh head totesport’s market for the former at 10/3 whilst Hurricane Fly is the 1/2 favourite to win his fourth Grade 1 hurdle on the bounce.

Charlie McCann’s Weekend Preview

The rearranged King George VI Chase is today’s highlight with the evergreen Kauto Star (3.00) bidding to become the first horse in history to win the race for a fifth time. Three miles around Kempton are the optimum conditions for the Paul Nicholls-trained 11-y-o who is reported to be “as good as ever” in the opinion of Clifford Baker who rides him out most days.

Kauto Star Runs on Saturday

AP McCoy takes the mount in the absence of injured duo Ruby Walsh and Noel Fehily and the dual Gold Cup winner ought to be too good despite his years. Planet Of Sound is taken to follow the selection home although further significant rain would be a negative.

Listen!

The belated Xmas Hurdle sees current Champion Hurdler Binocular look to return to winning ways in a fascinating six-runner contest. Connections of Binocular have suggested that his season revolves around retaining his crown at Cheltenham in March and that he won’t be 100% ready for today’s clash; he is reluctantly overlooked in favour of Starluck (2.25) who finished runner up (ahead of Binocular) in the corresponding race last year.

The selection is a speed horse and with Overturn likely to tow them along at a decent pace the hope is that Timmy Murphy can swoop late and fast.

We begin a marathon nine-race card with a juvenile hurdle which sees the eagerly-awaited debut of Brampour the ante-post favourite for the Triumph Hurdle. Trained on the flat by Jean-Claude Rouget in France he is reported to have schooled very well for Paul Nicholls but the filly A Media Luz (11.50) sets a decent enough standard having finished an excellent second to stablemate Grandouet at Newbury last time.
The form of the Nigel Twiston-Davies horses is a concern but Sybarite (12.50) is held in the highest regard and finished runner up in a Grade 2 event at Cheltenham on his hurdle debut. His jumping wasn’t as fluent as you would wish on that occasion, but with that experience under his belt he can go one better despite the reservations about the well-being of the yard.
The big betting race of the day is the Lanzarote Hurdle and I like the chances of The Betchworth Kid (3.35) stepping up in trip for the very much in-form Alan King. A decent stayer on the flat he ran a very good race behind the progressive Tocca Ferro at Newbury last time and is given the nod ahead of the unexposed Like Minded one of two Paul Nicholls’ trained representatives.

The weekend nap goes in the last with last month’s Plumpton winner Rey Nacarado (4.05) taken to follow up for Charlie Longsdon. The giant Mallusk has been raised 10lbs for his Uttoxeter win and is likely to be all the rage for the Kim Bailey yard stepping up in trip, but I am convinced there is more to come from Rey Nacarado in the last race on what promises to be a wonderful card.
If Warwick goes ahead my two against the field in the Classic Chase are novice Cannington Brook and first time blinkered Officier De Reserve (3.20) with preference for the latter who can reverse Newbury running with West End Rocker on the revised terms. A winner of his sole start at the track over hurdles and if the headgear works the oracle he must have as good a chance as any in a wide-open event.
Fredo has finished runner up in all three starts over fences but can go one better in Wetherby’s 1.30. Trainer Ian Williams has been among the winners on the flat in recent days and Fredo receives weight from three of his four rivals this afternoon.
There is also an excellent card at Naas where Royal De la Thinte (1.35) can make all in the 1.35 for Jim Draper. The selection has a bit to find with likely favourite Quito De la Roque on a line through Bostons Angel but the fast fluent jumping of the selection can make the difference.

King Kauto V ?

The final field has been declared for the belated William Hill King George VI Chase, with Kauto Star still occupying a lofty position in the betting – the sponsors going 4-6 for an unprecedented fifth triumph in this prestigious occasion.

King George 2010

Kauto Star goes to Kempton for 5

Despite the delay, the Kempton stage remains firmly set for Kauto to record an unparalleled five in one of the decade’s most eagerly-anticipated events, with Tony McCoy set to partner the white-faced superstar in his history-making attempts.

Familiar names return from the previous renewal, with Albertas Run, Nacarat, Madison Du Berlais taking the stand – complete with young pretenders Long Run, Planet Of Sound, The Nightingale and Riverside Theatre adding further excitement to the equation.

Irish raider Forpadydeplasterer completes the line-up, however compatriot Sizing Europe is an unfortunate absentee, along with veteran Ollie Magern.

William Hill King George (Without Kauto Star): 3-1 Long Run, 9-2 Nacarat, The Nightingale, 11-2 Forpadydeplasterer, 6-1 Riverside Theatre, 13-2 Planet Of Sound, 12-1 Madison Du Berlais,14-1 Albertas Run (EW 1/4 1,2,3)

Charlie McCann’s Boxing Day Preview (But Will They Race?)

At the time of writing StanJames.com are betting 11/8 that racing takes place at Kempton on Boxing Day and 4/7 it doesn’t. Let’s hope the forecast thaw for Boxing Day allows racing to go ahead as history promises to be made as Kauto Star bids to win the feature William Hill King George VI Chase for an unprecedented fifth year in a row. Note if the Boxing Day card is lost the King George & Xmas Hurdle will be run on Monday 27th weather permitting.

King George 2010

Kauto Star goes to Kempton for 5

Newly crowned Sports Personality of the Year AP McCoy takes the mount on the dual former Gold Cup winner following the injuries to first Ruby Walsh and more recently Noel Fehily. On official figures Kauto Star has to be merely pointed in the right direction to win but why are the bookmakers fielding against him?

Time waits for no one and Kauto Star will be 11 on January 1st and it is almost eight years since he made his racecourse debut. He had not jumped with his usual zest when falling four out in this year’s Gold Cup, and he didn’t impress everyone with the manner of his comeback success at Down Royal last month when he had 4lengths to spare over Sizing Europe. AP McCoy has never ridden the horse before but that is hardly an issue given the horse has hardly made the semblance of a mistake in any of his 4 previous victories in this great race.

Kauto Star (3.00) may not be as good as he once was but it is only 12 months ago that he, arguably, put up a career best performance when landing the corresponding race by no less than 36 lengths and with bullish noises coming out of the Paul Nicholls’ camp I feel history will be made. The great Desert Orchid fell in the 1991 King George in his bid for a fifth win but I take Kauto Star to go one better and to join the greats of the sport.

The Xmas Hurdle is the other feature race on the card with Champion Hurdler Binocular (2.25) looking to get back to winning ways having finished third on his reappearance in the StanJames.com Fighting Fifth at Newbury last month. One got the impression that Binocular would improve greatly for his reappearance and despite again finishing behind Starluck in the corresponding race last year won by Go Native Binocular can return to winning ways and the head of the market for the Stan James Champion Hurdle in March.

Secret World (12.40) looked a doubtful stayer at Newbury on his Hurdle debut but is likely to be played later by jockey Barry Geraghty this time and he can make the most of the weight he receives from Toubab who was such an impressive winner at Haydock last time.

Aiteen Thirtythree has never run right-handed but has looked a novice chaser of some potential to date but marginal preference is for Master Of The Hall (1.50) who looked worth following when beating Fredo at Ascot on his first start over the larger obstacles last month.

Our Bob (3.35) has had problems with his wind but he won’t be the only one over the Festive season. He jumped and travelled like easily the best horse in the race at Haydock last month but went out like a light. He is unlikely to reach the heights he once suggested he was going to in Ireland when trained by Willie Mullins but the hope is that the excellent Philip Hobbs can coax a little bit of improvement from his first run. If that is a case he could be extremely well-handicapped. Swansbrook looks the danger in a cracking finale.

McCoy To Ride Kauto Star ?

MCCOY HOT FAV FOR KAUTO RIDE AFTER FEHILY MISERY

King George 2010

Kauto Star goes to Kempton

Noel Fehily’s Kauto Star William Hill King George ride hangs in the balance after Nicholls’ newest representative tragically crashed out aboard Rivaliste at Newbury on Saturday.

The injury comes as massive blow to the jockey, who had only recently been confirmed to ride the white-faced steeplechaser in Boxing Day’s highlight, thus, this surely leaves some doubt as to whether he will in fact be recovered in time to take up the coveted position.

Tony McCoy will take his place aboard Neptune Collonges and Big Buck’s on Saturday, leading William Hill to install the champion as heavy 1-4 market leader to secure the premier Christmas cracker.

Lucy Rhodes, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: “Yet more drama surrounds Kauto Star in his bids for a fifth King George. Noel Fehily was a relative outsider following the sudden absence of Ruby – aside from hot fav McCoy, will there be any other unfancied riders who can grab on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to grab the December 26th spotlight?”

Kauto Star Goes Straight For The King George

A £20,000 bet was amongst the first wagers fielded by the sponsors following the news that four-time William Hill King George VI Chase winner Kauto Star will miss the Hennessy target to instead concentrate on sealing an historic fifth win in the Boxing Day highlight.

King George 2010

Kauto Star goes to Kempton

It was clearly the news that punters were waiting for as immediately after Champion trainer Paul Nicholls, and owner Clive Smith ruled the star out of the Newbury handicap money began to flow for his King George bid.

William Hill were forced to trim the the ten-year-old – likely to be ridden by Noel Fehily – into 11-8 from 6-4. His shortest price since being quoted at 5-2 after his fourth win last year.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’This was clearly what everyone wanted to hear before showing the colour of their King George money. And right now, it’s brightly coloured in purple, yellow, and green as punters of all shapes and sizes show their support of King Kauto in cash.’’

McCoy Favourite For Kauto Star Ride

The Racing world was left shocked on Saturday with the news that Ruby Walsh – having sustained a broken leg at Down Royal – will miss the ride aboard Kauto Star in the William Hill King George VI Chase.

Free Horseracing Tips

Kauto Star

The 31-year-old – who has partnered the Ditcheat hero to four consecutive wins in the Boxing Day highlight, will now devastatingly remain on the sidelines as another jockey takes the ride of a lifetime.  King George sponsors William Hill have priced-up who the likely pilot will be; making Tony McCoy their odds-on 1-5 favourite to be aboard the 14-time Grade One winner. Barry Geraghty – with a plethora of possible options – is quoted as their 4-1 second-favourite.

Following his Down Royal win on Saturday Kauto Star remains the 7-4 favourite to secure a fifth unprecedented win in the William Hill King George. But the rising 11-year-old faces one of his fiercest challenges ever against 5-1 chance Long Run, Gold Cup winner Imperial Commander (8-1), and stable mate What A Friend (8-1).

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’Kauto stands on the cusp of racing immortality, and his winning jockey will be carried into history alongside him. Racing’s riding elite will be jostling for this ride, but we suspect that McCoy will be battering down the doors at Ditcheat to be on-board on Boxing Day.’’

Kauto Star unchanged for King George after satisfactory reappearance

What a great sight it was to see Kauto Star back in action and jumping well this afternoon. He needed the run it seems but jumped well and will come on for it. Can he now lift a fifth King George on Boxing Day? 46 days away, that is all!

Kauto Star remains unchanged at 7/4 with totesport for the William Hill King George VI Chase after recapturing the JNwine.com Champion Chase at Down Royal, a race he last won in 2008 en route to Cheltenham glory.

Kauto Star

King George next for Kauto Star

The two-time Gold Cup winner travelled comfortably throughout most of the contest but had to pull out plenty up the home straight, eventually scoring by four lengths from last year’s Arkle victor Sizing Europe. Henry de Bromhead’s charge stepped up plenty from his first run of the season and has been chalked up at 20/1 for Gold Cup glory next March.

‘Although Kauto Star didn’t show all his customary sparkle today, Kempton is the target and we would not be surprised if he put up another five-star performance to land an unprecedented fifth King George on Boxing Day’ said totesport spokesman Andrew Griffiths.

The following race provided Paul Nicholls with a quick-fire double as The Nightingale landed the Ladbrokes.com Chase with ease. Prior to the race his trainer stated the horse is unlikely to be campaigned on left hand courses so has been given a cautious 25/1 quote for the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Back on home turf, the champion trainer looks to have another promising horse on his hands as Dolatulo handed out a 23-length beating to his rivals in the Blue Square Exclusive Live Shows Juvenile Hurdle at Sandown. The three-year old never came off the bridle and is the new 14/1 favourite (from 33/1) for the JCB Triumph Hurdle with the Wigan-based firm.

Times Up scuppers hopes of totescoop6 punters

This afternoon’s totescoop6 was not won which means there is a total of £137,988 that rolls over in the win fund whilst the bonus pot now stands at £59,137.

Only 6,231 remained after the first leg and a mere five heading into the fourth leg – the totesport.com November Handicap – but none were on eventual winner Times Up whilst means the bet rolls over for the second successive weekend.

‘Competitive racing at both Doncaster and Wincanton meant this afternoon’s Scoop6 was always going to be tough and it proved to be the case but around £300,000 could be up for grabs next weekend when all eyes will be on Cheltenham’s Open meeting,’ said totepool spokesman George Primarolo.

A total of £199,068 was bet into the pool this afternoon and there were only 9 winners of the place dividend, each of whom picks up a whopping £4,423.70.

Kauto Star Opens Campaign At Down Royal On Saturday

A field of seven chasers are set to line-up at Down Royal – including the dual Gold Cup winner Kauto Star, last season’s Arkle winner Sizing Europe, and the hat-trick seeking China Rock.

The Paul Nicholls-trained Kauto Star, who won the race back in 2008, is the 8-15 favourite with bookmakers William Hill who also make the ten-year-old a 7-4 shot to win his fifth straight William Hill King George VI Chase at Kempton next month.

The favourite’s biggest challenge could come from last season’s Irish Independent Arkle winner Sizing Europe. The 7-2 second favourite is being stepped up in trip for the second consecutive time – and his trainer Henry De Bromhead is hopeful his eight-year-old will see out the three miles.

China Rock, who got better of Sizing Europe at Punchestown last time out, is rated a 6-1 chance to complete a hat-trick of successes under rules.

Coolcashin, Killyglen, Mossbank and Trafford Lad, complete the line-up.

‘Kauto Star is the star attraction at Down Royal, and it would be a big surprise if he didn’t oblige in the Champion Chase,’ said William Hill spokesman Tony Kenny ‘Sizing Europe is the obvious danger, but there still remains a question mark about his ability to see out a three-mile trip.’
