Punchestown Day Three

We’ll Be Singing When We’re Winning at Punchestown

Mayhem broke out at Cheltenham after Forpadydeplasterer (6.40) won the Arkle, the owners singing loudly and brightening up the winners enclosure. It is back to business on home turf today as Forpadydeplasterer returns to action in the Swordlestown Cup Novice Chase on day three of the Punchestown Festival .

Barry Geraghty is back on board, facing only six rivals, including Tatenen who fell in The Arkle and came back to be second to Kalahri King at Aintree. Tony McCoy will ride the Paul Nicholls trained Tatenen with Ruby Walsh choosing Deutschland for Willie Mullins. Forpadydeplasterer missed the Aintree race in favour of this, a decision that could pay dividends for the choir of owners. I am very keen on Forpadydeplasterer today and will be a backer at 2.62. I will be a layer of Tatenen at 4.4, taking my lead from Ruby Walsh and I hope to be joining in the singing of the Forpadydeplasterer syndicate after he has won.

The big race of the day is the World Series Hurdle at 5.30. Nicky Henderson has withdrawn Punchestowns leaving Fiveforthree as the favourite. Trading at 2.52 to back, this is much too short in my eyes. I will take this one on today with Fair Along and Powerstation having solid each-way claims at better odds. Tony McCoy back on board Brave Inca is eye-catching to say the least. I do not think there is much between the favourite and Fair Along who I am backing win and place against the favourite.

My bet of the day is actually at Folkstone, rather than Punchestown today. Superfrank (3.55) was a good winner last time out over Course and Distance in an apprentice race and remains on a good mark. A big positive is the booking of Chris Catlin and I think Super Frank will frank the form.  Super Frank is a very solid proposition to back at 2.3 in a moderate 7 runner race.

One horse that jumps out of the card is Thomas Baines (5.25 Yarmouth). Trading at 1.33 this was the subject of controversy at Windsor amongst punters for the ride given by Jamie Spencer.  I am sure there will be no mistakes this time, but there will be none of my money on his back today!

It’s always re-assuring when you rate a race, analyse the trends and have a Tony McCoy runner top-rated and that is the case with Hennessy. Carl Llewellyn knows what it take to win a long distance chase and McCoy will give this every assistance from the saddle as he did when 2nd in the Scottish National last weekend. At this stage HENNESSY rates excellent each-way value at 14/1 with Hills based on the trends analysis.

However, he is joint top-rated with OSCAR PARK who looks seriously unexposed and fits almost all the stats as a result. Showed some promise at times last season and very lightly races this season so will be fresher than most and with Timmy Murphy in the plate he should get every assistance from the saddle.

Third best is New Little Bric who loves it round Sandown and almost fits the ideal stats-profile. He could be worth a small cover bet on the other two main bets.

The trends are marginally pointing to Paco Boy with Virtual a very close 2nd. However, I don’t back odds-on and there is one more stat that I have not mentioned which is that “50 horses have lined up that were beaten by 6 lengths or further and only 3 of those have won”. Paco Boy was beaten almost 10 lengths last time out.

I think the value call is to go with the likely 2nd favourite VIRTUAL. John Gosden is in superb form at the moment, his horses are running very well fresh and at 3/1 or 7/2 he is a value proposition.

Bet365 Gordon Richard Stakes – Sandown 4:15

Not ‘that’ strong a trends race and they do not help in narrowing down the field much, but they seem to suggest it rests between Tartan Bearer, Halicarnassus, Pipedreamer and Buccellati. Given the overall poor record of favourites in this race, and the fact that Michael Stoute’s runners are needing their first run, it may be best to oppose Tartan Bearer. However, it makes little sense to back the short-priced Pipedreamer for the win and Halicarnassus may be outside the ideal price bracket of less than 8/1. So the best option may be to back the in-form Andrew Balding’s BUCCELLATI each-way who is likely to be around the 6/1 or 7/1 range. From a trends viewpoint though it’s probably one to leave alone.

Im Off to Lay One at Beverley Today

It is clear that more backers support Tom Dascombe’s horses than read his blog. Gertmegalush was heavily backed yesterday before proving his trainer right by blowing the start and with it any chance of winning. We should now all lobby the BHA to make it compulsory for all trainers to have blogs!

Ladies Best was placed which guaranteed a profit and Lodge Lane showed the effects of a hard season and that fall at Cheltenham. Now we need more of the same on Thursday!

There are another six meetings in the UK and Ireland today with no fewer than thirty-nine races for us to ponder , the quality of which all falls some way short of yesterday’s Epsom card.

All in The Red (6.50) at Southwell  came back to form last time at Nottingham, winning at 33/1. He is a course and distance winner who runs today from only four pounds higher in the handicap.  All in the Red can be supported at 8.6 to win and 2.44 to place, which looks pretty good value. I will be backing in both markets to profit should he only manage a first three finish.  All in The Red should put us All in the Black today at Southwell. White Deer, the favourite doesn’t seem to handle Southwell and might be worth taking on.

I was working late last night on our new site, which you make like. It details how you can get nearly £800 of Free Bets! I will be relaxing today and I will be attending Beverley’s first meeting of the season which, judging by  the card, will be more of a social occasion than a business trip.  Beverley has the most biased draw in the country with a low stall over 5 furlongs being a trainer’s worst nightmare. Laying horses drawn low over 5 furlongs at Beverley will in the long-term prove to be a profitable strategy. At today’s prices Madam Jourdaine (2.00 Beverley) is the one to take on from stall two and can be laid at 7. This looks a very solid lay with the stable not in the best of form and Noel Wilson’s horses usually take a couple of runs when coming back from a break to find their form.
