Haydock Calls Off Saturday Card #horseracing

The weather has claimed Haydock‘s Saturday card due to frost and a frozen track. The cold spell continues.

Walkon who was declared to run in the Champion Hurdle trial will now go to Ascot.

Charlie McCann’s Weekend Betting Preview

Today’s Betfair Chase sees the reappearance of Gold Cup winner Imperial Commander (3.25) just touched off by Kauto Star in the corresponding race 12 months ago. The Nigel Twiston-Davies trained runner was not at his best when unseating behind What A Friend at Aintree back in the spring but is taken to reverse the placings on this more galloping track.

Imperial Commander runs on Saturday

What A Friend is owned in partnership by Sir Alex Ferguson and we at StanJames.com have an enhanced double for United to beat Wigan at Old Trafford and for What A Friend to win at Haydock Park at 5/1. Note we are betting 1/3 odds 1,2 on this event.

Betfair Chase: (place terms: 1/3 the first 2)
8-11 Imperial Commander
11-4 What A Friend
7 Nacarat
8 Planet Of Sound
33 Bar

Tara Royal has disappointed so far this term and I thought Ockey De Neulliac (1.15) made a highly encouraging reappearance at Aintree last month. The Ferdy Murphy stable have tended to need their first run of the season and the hope is that the selection improves markedly for his comeback.

Wogan (2.20) wouldn’t want the ground too soft but improved dramatically last season and is taken to make a winning reappearance for Nicky Henderson. The 10-year-old is 7lbs higher than when winning a valuable event at Doncaster back in January but is lightly raced for one of his years and could improve again.

Nevada Royale was once considered a potential Gold Cup horse but hasn’t seen the track for over two years. He has left the yard of Paul Nicholls in the interim period but is still owned by fearless punter Harry Findlay. A check on the market is warranted.

The David Pipe team have always thought the world of Grand Crus (2.50) and a 6lb penalty is unlikely to stop him following up his impressive Cheltenham win last weekend if over those exertions. His 6l defeat of the highly-touted For Non Stop will necessitate a big hike in the weights (3rd horse a further 11 lengths back) and the step up to 3m for the first time should not inconvenience as connections consider him a 3m chaser in the making.

There is also a cracking card at Ascot where the dual Champion Chaser Master Minded (2.05) reappears 2m 4f. He’s never won beyond the minimum trip in Britain and his stamina looked an issue at Aintree when runner up behind Voy Por Ustedes at this trip a couple of years ago. He faces no easy task against multiple Grade 1 winner Albertas Run but I think his stamina will last and give Paul Nicholls another big race winner.

Nicky Henderson is looking for a hat-trick of wins in the Ascot Hurdle with Champion Hurdle third Zaynar looking for back-to-back successes in the race; in receipt of 8lbs I just favour Karabak (2.35) who is 6lb better off for the 6l he was beaten in the corresponding race last term.

Ascot Hurdle: Prices from StanJames.com
5-4 Zaynar
4 Karabak
4 Silviniaco Conti
12 Won In The Dark
14 Bar

There is a wonderful card at Aintree on Sunday on the only day of the year when there are two races over the National fences. The feature is the Becher Chase with top-weight Notre Pere leading a strong Irish challenge. Scottish National winner Merigo is having his first look at the daunting Aintree fences and connections are targeting the big one back in the spring but at 16/1 I give the nod to Royal Rosa (1.45) ew who was third in the race last year before coming a cropper at Bechers in the National. The selection got going far too late over the Mildmay course on his reappearance and the talented Brian Hughes takes over today.

Fine Parchment (2.20) beat little of note at Uttoxeter last time but jumped well and looks one to keep on the right side of especially with Noel Fehily taking the mount.

Keki Buku (1.10) is the weekend nap having turned what looked a competitive heat at Market Rasen last weekend into a procession. If in the same mood he will take plenty of beating despite the 7lb penalty.

The Hitman on Saturday, Free Horseracing Tips, 20 November

Its a huge day of action on Saturday, not least becuase we see the return of the Cheltenham Gold Cup Winner, Imperial Commander in Saturday’s Betfair Chase. Carl The Hitman Harris marks your card with the best bets of the day…..

Free Horseracing Tips

Kauto Star won the Betfair chase last year

Who can forget last year’s Betfair Chase when Kauto Star was lucky to win, but win he did, will Imperial Commander get a race today?

The reality is that Imperial Commander (3:25 Haydock) has 22 pounds in hand over nearest rival Planet of Sound, he should win this in a canter. There is no value in his price, but this is the banker of the day so whatever we back, we can double up with the Gold Cup Winner.

Dunraven Storm (12:40 Haydock) should trot up in the opener at Haydock, again no value but this is one to watch with a view to bigger prizes in the future. He was hammered by Cue Card last time and I would like to see that form well and truely franked, I think that Cue Card is a show in for the Supreme Novice Hurdle at Cheltenham, even at this stage.

Stagecoach Pearl (1:15)
is a decent horse and I have got this one in my notebook as one to follow. A winner of three of his last four starts, this is a tougher test but I think he will be up to it and will win again despite the rise in the weights and at the prices I make this my best bet of the day.

It is interesting that Master Minded (2:05 Ascot) steps up to 2m 3f, having been campaigned over 2 miles. This is not as cut and dry as most commentators would have you believe, there are plenty of question marks against Master Minded, not least the trip and the disappointing run when we last saw him at Cheltenham in March. In Albertas Run he has a worth opponent and it will not be easy. I think he will win, but it will not be easy. It would be good for him to go to Cheltenham in the best of form.

The Ascot Hurdle is a seriously good race. Won last year by Zaynar who is back to defend his crown, but I think in Silviniaco Conti (2:35 Ascot) he has a serious opponent who potentially could all the way to the top. I think that Paul Nicholls gelding will mainatin his unbeaten record. A very good race indeed here.

Have a great day, good luck.

The Road To Aintree

The Tote has signed a two-year deal with Haydock Park Racecourse to sponsor the Haydock Park Gold Cup in February which will now be known as the totesport.com Grand National Trial (registered as the Haydock Park Gold Cup).

Free Horseracing Tips

Grand National at Aintree

As well as the totesport.com Grand National Trial at Haydock Park, the Tote will also sponsor another four races on the card, including the Rendlesham Hurdle, Victor Ludorum Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle and Walrus Hunter Chase.

Notable horses to have won the totesport.com Grand National trial at Haydock Park include Cool Ground, who won the 1992 renewal en route to winning the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup and Party Politics, who won at Haydock Park the year after his Grand National success.

As part of this new deal, the Tote has developed a bonus scheme in conjunction with Jockey Club Racecourses centred around the John Smith’s Grand National. This will see winning connections pick up £250,000 if the same horse manages to win the totesport Classic Chase at Warwick, the totesport.com Grand National Trial at Haydock and the Aintree showpiece in April, where totesport is also the official betting partner.

The ‘totesport Road to Aintree’ bonus will be split between the owner, trainer, jockey and stable staff in an effort to encourage potential Grand National candidates to run in all three races. 60% of the bonus will go to the owner, 20% to the trainer, 10% to the jockey with the remaining 10% going to stable staff in the winning yard.

In the event that either Warwick or Haydock Park is abandoned, the bonus will be reduced to £100,000 for any horse that manages to win either the totesport Classic Chase at Warwick or the totesport.com Grand National trial at Haydock and then go on to complete a double in the John Smith’s Grand National at Aintree. The bonus will be split between winning connections in the same way.

“We are delighted to have signed a deal with Haydock Park to sponsor the totesport.com Grand National Trial for the next two years,” said totepool Director of Racecourse Business Jason Brautigam.
“This fits in perfectly alongside other races in the Tote’s sponsorship portfolio, including the totesport.com Becher Chase at Aintree, where we are the official betting partner for the John Smith’s Grand National itself.
“The bonus initiative is another example of our strong partnership with Jockey Club Racecourses and connections now have a real incentive to create history by winning both the Classic Chase and Grand National Trial en route to a crack at the big one at Aintree in April.”
“We are thrilled to welcome Totesport as the new sponsors of our Grand National trial in February,” said Dickon White, Managing Director Haydock Park.

“In recent years we have seen winners such as Rambling Minster, Forest Gunner and Shotgun Willy go onto Aintree with live chances in the National itself. The additional incentive of the Road to Aintree Bonus is one that rewards all of the connections and we hope that it attracts plenty of interest in some key Jump races in the New Year.”

“It’s fantastic for Jockey Club Racecourses to strengthen our partnership with the Tote. The Road to Aintree bonus creates an even stronger incentive to race at Warwick, Haydock Park and Aintree,” said Paul Fisher, Chief Operating Officer for Jockey Club Racecourses.

“Hopefully we’ll see a really good head of steam building up to the John Smith’s Grand National.”

Tuesdays Free Horseracing Tips, 14 September

It is mid-September already and you get the feeling winter is on its way. There is still plenty of horseracing on the flat and today we have three meetings at Haydock Lingfield and Yarmouth. Free Horseracing Tips from Racing Diary.

Hayley gets the ride on Horseradish on Tuesday

Almost one third of all the races run in Britain on Tuesday are maidens which quite frankly doesn’t make for good punting. Nevertheless our job is to find the diamonds in the rough, so here we go.

4:00 Haydock, Horseradish, Win. Horseradish has a 50% career strike rate and a 66% strike rate this season, not bad by any standards. Last time out he warned a competitive handicap at Chester on good to soft going, ground I think he may face again here at Haydock with overnight rain forecast to fall on the current good good to soft in places going. Hayley Turner takes the ride for Michael Bell and has ridden Horseradish on five previous occasions. This is a fairly competitive race but horseradish looks rock solid to me and I will be back.

4:10 Yarmouth, Dafeef, Win. There is no doubting the form of the Godolphin stable at the moment and Frankie Dettori should override another winner here aboard this consistent three-year-old. Having won a handicap on his penultimate start he was stepped up to a listed company last time out at Newmarket running with credit to finish third. This looks tailor-made opportunity for him and I make this one my best bet of the day.

Good luck!

Carl Harris’ Free Horseracing Tips, for the Weekend.

It really is a big weekend of horseracing on both Saturday and Sunday in Great Britain and Ireland. Carl Harris looks at the action and gives you his best bets for the weekend. You’re free horseracing tips from racing diary.

Free Horseracing Tips

Starspangledbanner runs at Haydock

SATURDAY…..The Rip Van Winkle and Music Show at Leopardstown!

2:40 Leopardstown, Music Show, win. Mick Channon sends his star filly over to Ireland following her second last time out to the mighty Goldikova. On paper this looks a competitive race but if we take the form of face value then Music Show should be ready winner. I think 2-1 represents value here and I advise a decent bet on the Channon horse.

Matron Stakes: 2-1 Music Show, 3-1 Lillie Langtry, 9-2 Bethrah, Spacious, 10-1 Jacqueline Quest, 16-1 Gile Na Greine, 20-1 Hen Night (EW 1/4 1,2)

3:35 Haydock, StarSpangledBanner, win. There were doubts about the participation of Aidan O’Brien’s sprinter but it is reported all is well and he takes his place in the group one Sprint cup on Saturday at Haydock. With Paco Boy an absentee here I do not think there is anything to trouble SSB. Regal parade won the race last year for Dandy Nicholls and has to be respected, as do most Nicholls runners in sprints these days, on his last three outings though SSB is easily the best horse in the race. Those last three races were all a group one level and two wins and a second is simply fantastic form. At the prices StarSpangledBanner is my best bet of the day.

Betfred Sprint Cup: 11-8 Starspangledbanner, 7-4 Regal Parade, 9-1 Borderlescott, Kingsgate Native, 12-1 Lady Of The Desert, Markab, 16-1 Rainfall, 22-1 Doncaster Rover, 25-1 Genki, 28-1 Prime Defender, 40-1 Our Jonathan, 50-1 Barney McGrew, Serious Attitude, 66-1 Sir Gerry, 100-1 Iver Bridge Lad, 200-1 Fullandby (EW ¼ 1,2,3)

4:45 Haydock, Measuring Time, win. Some say the Richard Hannon two-year-olds have gone off the boil of late, all I know is he wins a lot of races and has done all year! Measuring Time is another decent juvenile from the Hannon stable who has two wins and a second to his name in his career to date. that second came last time out at Sandown in a group 3 where he went down to Native Khan who holds a clutch of fancy entries. Down in grade and up a furlong in trip I take the mount of Ryan Moore to run out an easy winner here at Haydock.

Irish Champion Stakes….

3:45 Leopardstown, Rip Van Winkle, win. What a great race this is at Leopardstown. Sea the stars warned this in 2009 on his penultimate career starts with Aidan O’Brien filling the next 3 places. O’Brien runs three of the field of six but surely this boils down to an match between Twice Over and Rip Van Winkle, a rematch of the International Stakes at York last month. Rip Van Winkle officially won by half a length but in truth he won very cosily under an masterful ride by Johnny Murtagh. Rip Van Winkle is back to his best, of that there is little doubt and I think on home soil Rip Van Winkle will win and send favourite backers home happy.

Irish Champion Stakes: 4-6 Rip Van Winkle,10-3 Twice Over, 6-1 Cape Blanco, 11-1 Sea Lord, 22-1 Famous Name, 33-1 Beethoven (EW 1/4 1,2)

There is racing on Sunday, indeed there is a meeting at my beloved York. However, Saturday is absolutely fantastic in terms of quality and I am sad to say Sunday does not even come close and as such will be treated as a day of rest, at least for me.

Good luck!

Charlie McCann’s Weekend Horseracing Preview

Charlie McCann from Stan James Marks your card for a very exciting weekend of horseracing action. Here are your free horseracing tips, for the weekend courtesy of Charlie McCann…

Earlier in the week rain was expected at Haydock Park this afternoon but the forecast is much better now and it looks as if the Sprint Cup will be run on perfect ground and there ought to be no excuses for one of the big sprints of the flat racing season.

Free Horseracing Tips

Starspangledbanner runs at Haydock

It could be a very good day for Aidan O’Brien on both sides of the Irish Sea with Starspangledbanner (3.35) likely to go off a short priced favourite (currently 7/4 with StanJames.com) for Haydock’s feature.

A high-class horse in his native Australia the Coolmore operation bought the colt earlier in the year and, after a prep run at York, he was well-backed before winning the Golden Jubilee at Ascot’s Royal meeting. He then followed up in the July Cup at Newmarket before finishing runner up over an inadequate 5f at York last time.

The return to 6f ought to suit the four-year-old and as long as the ground continues to dry out he is going to be very hard to beat although I’m not convinced the draw in stall 5 is ideal. At a bigger price I can pass on a good word for Markab who may try and make all under the stands’ rail.

Betfred Sprint Cup: EW 1/4 1, 2, 3: prices from StanJames.com:
7-4 Starspangledbanner
5-2 Regal Parade
9 Kingsgate Native
10 Borderlescott
10 Markab
12 Lady Of The Desert

Stan James! Register and Bet Now for your Free Bet!!

We make Rip Van Winkle (3.40 Leopardstown) 4/6 favourite to land the Irish Champion Stakes for Aidan O’Brien who saddles half the field six-runner field with Cape Blanco and Beethoven supplementing the recent Juddmonte International winner. If there was any rain in Ireland I would be very sweet on the chances of Famous Name at 25/1 but if the conditions remain quick Rip Van Winkle ought to confirm his York running with Twice Over.

Irish Champion Stakes:
4-6 Rip Van Winkle
10-3 Twice Over
6 Cape Blanco
10 Sea Lord
25 Famous Name
33 Beethoven

Music Show holds a 2-1 advantage over Lillie Langtry so far this season but it would be no surprise if the latter, who ran below par at Newmarket last time, levelled matters on home soil. Music Show ideally needs a fast pace at a mile and there is every chance of the race turning into a tactical battle unless Spacious wants to make it a true test.

Matron Stakes:
2 Music Show
3 Lillie Langtry
9-2 Bethrah
11-2 Spacious
8 Jacqueline Quest
16 Gile Na Greine
20 Hen Night

We have seen that O’Brien has fancied runners in all three of today’s Group 1 contests but how many winners will he actually have? We at StanJames.com bet:

No of Gp 1 winners Aidan O’Brien will saddle in Britain & Ireland on Saturday?
0 9/4
1 Evens
2 9/4
3 14/1

Unbeaten top-class juvenile Awzaan has been off the track since disappointing in the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas and it is interesting to see connections persevering with the colt over a mile. When I saw him in the flesh in the spring he hadn’t grown a great deal since his 2-y-old days and he looked more of a sprinter to me. He could be a different class to today’s rivals but I like the look of Secrecy (2.00 Hay) whose third to Sea Lord was franked by the facile win of Poet’s Voice at Goodwood last weekend.

Lady Éclair has been a revelation this year and she could easily land her eighth win of the year but I just favour stablemate Becausewecan (3.05 Hay) in the big betting race of the day the Old Borough Cup. The selection’s stamina looked to give way over 2m last time and the drop back in trip should suit; he has an excellent draw in stall 2.

Measuring Time (4.45 H) meets nothing of the calibre of Native Khan stepped up to a mile for the first time and whilst the Hannon two-year-olds have not been as invincible in recent weeks as they were previously he ought to provide Ryan Moore with a welcome winner. The champion jockey is returning from a wrist injury which has sidelined him at a crucial part of the season and it looks as if Paul Hanagan will be the first northern based champion since Kevin Darley in 2000.

I was at Windsor last weekend to see selection Morache Music (4.10) land the odds and I am slightly surprised to see him turned out again although connections must believe him to be very well-treated despite carrying top-weight. He appeared ill at ease on the soft ground at the Berkshire course and he is again recommended although the draw in stall 1 is a worry.

Alan King’s horses weren’t quite right last year and I am looking forward to a better jumps season for the excellent trainer in 2010/11 and perhaps Pouvoir (2.40 Strat) can start the ball rolling. Stable jockey Choc Thornton will miss the first couple of months of the season after a dreadful incident at Newton Abbot mid-summer and Sam Thomas takes the mount this afternoon.

Stan James have seen money for Aidan O’Brien to have all 3 Gp 1 winners in Britain & Ireland tomorrow and bet 12/1 from 14s.

Head of PR Charlie McCann: “We have seen money for Starspangledbanner (6/4 from 7/4) as the ground continues to dry out for the Betfred Sprint and it is now only 12/1 that Coolmore mop up all three Gp 1 contests tomorrow”.

Number of Gp 1 winners saddled by AOB tomorrow Sat?

11-10 One Winner ((from Evens)
9-4 Two Winners
5-2 No Winners (from 9/4)
12 Three Winners (from 14s)

Haydock Sprint Cup market reformed after Paco Boy ruled out

Paco Boy will go to France and will miss Saturday’s Haydock feature. The market has been reformed….

Free Horseracing Tips

Paco Boy - Non-runner

Both Starspangledbanner and Regal Parade have been cut for Saturday’s Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock following the news that Paco Boy will almost certainly miss the race in favour of the Prix Moulin at Longchamp.

Starspangledbanner now heads the market at 9/4 (from 5/2) with totesport whilst last year’s winner Regal Parade is now a 3/1 shot (from 7/2) with the Wigan-based firm.

‘Richard Hannon’s decision to send Paco Boy over to France has made the Sprint Cup picture a little clearer but punters are still waiting on news on whether current ante-post favourite Starspangledbanner will line up,’ said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

Meanwhile, the weights for both the totesport.com Cambridgeshire and totesport.com Cesarewitch have been published and it is Lost In The Moment and Ransom Note that head the market at 12/1 for the former with the sponsors.

The quartet of Forte Dei Marmi, Start Right, Sweet Lightning and Taqleed are next in the market at 14/1 whilst top-weight Distant Memories is a 20/1 shot.

The Nicky Henderson-trained pair of Ghimaar and Sentry Duty head the sponsors’ market for the totesport.com Cesarewitch at 12/1 alongside Alan King’s Manyriverstocross who has been well supported over the past week.

Top-weight Bergo is next in the market at 14/1 alongside Bernie The Bolt, Lady Éclair, Majestic Concorde, Motrice and Universal Truth.

Saturdays Free Horseracing Tips, 7 August

Saturday is Shergar Cup Day at Ascot, which is enjoyable, but too complicated to bet on in my view. Todays Free Horseracing Tips come from Haydock and Newmarket. Get your bets on for a big day of racing….

Free Horseracing Tips

Free Horseracing Tips

1:50 Haydock, Shubatt, Win, could not have been more impressive for Michael Jarvis when making a winning debut in a Doncaster maiden in June, is bred to handle plenty of cut, and he can make winning start in a handicap off a mark of 86.

2:50 Haydock, Rio De Plata, Win. Godolphin look set to enjoy a fruitful 30 minutes on Saturday with the boys in blue holding leading chances in the feature events at Haydock and Newmarket. Rio De La Plata is the pick of the runners in the totesport.com Rose of Lancaster Stakes at the first-named venue as he continues his renaissance this term. A Group One winner as a juvenile, Rio De La Plata finished second in the French 2000 Guineas at three and was also placed in another Group One event across the Channel before his campaign was cut short. He disappointed on his return from a 419-day lay off at this track last September while two subsequent runs in this country and another outing in Dubai offered little encouragement. However, trainer Saeed bin Suroor’s perseverance paid off when the Rahy gelding landed a Nottingham conditions event in June before staying on gamely to claim a share of the honours in a Pontefract Listed heat last time. Rio De La Plata showed plenty of heart to dead-heat with Mabait that day and Group One entries later in the season show that connections still have high expectations of him. If Rio De La Plata is to justify that faith, he should be able to land this Group Three event.

2:35 Newmarket,  Khor Sheed, Win. Luca Cumani’s filly lost out to a more experienced rival on debut but, atypically for the trainer, was asked to run in Listed company next time and impressed in her manner of victory. She’s entered in all the top races and could be hard to beat although the form of her course success has taken some knocks and it’s difficult to assess the merit of the maiden wins of Clinical, White Moonstone and Musharakaat so it may not pay to go overboard.

Good Luck!

Fridays Free Horseracing Tips, 6 August

It is already Friday, that week was pretty uneventful, but at least the racing gets better from here on in. The best of the action is actually this evening. Here are your Free Horseracing Tips for Friday….

Free Horseracing Tips

Free Horseracing Tips for Friday

There is a nice card at Newmarket this evening, Free Horseracing Tips and Best Bets….

7:50 Newmarket, Chabal, Win. Rated the best horse in this field, Chabal should provide a winner for the boys in blue. Saeed Bin Suroor’s Galileo colt lost a Sandown Group Three after a banned substance was found in his system and then flopped when favourite for the Dante at York. He has since swerved the option of the Irish Derby and although he has something to prove it is hard to see him losing if near his best. He should be good enough here. (NAP).

7:05 Musselburgh, Arctic Feeling, Win. Only four runners in a race won by Singeur last term. Arctic Feeling was runner-up last time to subsequent Listed runner Black Moth in a decent novices’ contest at Beverley. Those in behind had either won before that or come out and run well since, giving it a solid look and he will take a bit of beating tonight. Hanagan is flying and this can add to his title hopes!
