Rewilding Tops Leger Entries, No Decision About Snow Fairy

Rewilding heads 16 remaining entries for the Ladbrokes St Leger on September 11. The Godolphin Colt is the red hot favourite for the World’s Oldest Classic. He is 7/4 favourite with the sponsors following a comprehensive four-length triumph in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York.

German Derby hero Buzzword and Vibrant Force could also represent Godolphin at Doncaster.

Al Zarooni said: “Rewilding has been very well since the Great Voltigeur Stakes. The race didn’t take as much out of him compared to the Derby as he didn’t go to York fully wound up.

“The course at York suited him better than Epsom and Goodwood, where he didn’t look comfortable, and the strong pace also helped him.

“I think that he will enjoy the step up to an extended mile and three quarters because he is a light horse.

“We don’t do much with him at home and we pushed him too hard earlier in the season to get him ready for the Derby, which took a lot out of him. We know him better now and we know that we don’t have to be too hard on him. He has the class to run well

“Buzzword will probably not head to Doncaster and he could go to Turkey for the Bosphorus Cup a week earlier. He stayed a mile and a half well in the German Derby but I don’t think that he would get the extra distance of the Ladbrokes St Leger.

“We also have Vibrant Force but any decision regarding pacemakers will be taken nearer the time. Rewilding needs a good pace to be at his best but it looks like there may be one or two horses remaining who will set the gallop.

“I was lucky enough to be at Doncaster when Mastery and Kite Wood finished first and second last year and it was a great day for Godolphin. We love to have Classic winners and I am hopeful that Rewilding can add to our success in the race.”

Like Rewilding, Snow Fairy also enhanced her claims for the Ladbrokes St Leger with an excellent performance at York’s Ebor meeting as she went down by three lengths to Midday in the Group One Yorkshire Oaks.

The Ed Dunlop-trained filly has already tasted Classic glory in both the English and Irish Oaks this season and is bidding to become the first filly to win the Ladbrokes St Leger since User Friendly in 1992.

Aidan O’Brien, Ireland’s champion trainer, has landed the Ladbrokes St Leger on three occasions, thanks to Milan (2001), Brian Boru (2003) and Scorpion (2005).

The master of Ballydoyle is set to launch another strong challenge with his six remaining entries. Midas Touch was second in the Irish Derby and filled the same position behind Rewilding at York, once place ahead of Group Two winner Joshua Tree.

The sextet of O’Brien entries also includes Cape Blanco, who got the better of Midas Touch in the Irish Derby and was second to Harbinger in the Group One King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, Navan maiden victor Flying Cross, Await The Dawn and Bright Horizon.

James Given is bidding for a first Classic success with Dandino who failed by a head to win the Group Three Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood last month – a race that also featured third Arctic Cosmos, from the stable of John Gosden, the Mark Johnston-trained Corsica (fifth) and Theology (sixth), representing Jeremy Noseda.

Gosden won the Ladbrokes St Leger with Shantou (1996) and Lucarno (2007), while Noseda triumphed with Sixties Icon (2006).

Mark Tompkins, who trains in Newmarket, has had the Ladbrokes St Leger in mind all season for Ted Spread, who scored in the Group Three Chester Vase in May and was fourth behind Rewilding at York. He won the Ladbrokes St Leger with Bob’s Return in 1993.

Total Command, third in the Group Three Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot in June, represents Sir Michael Stoute who won the Ladbrokes St Leger with Conduit in 2008.

The five-day confirmation stage for the Ladbrokes St Leger on Monday, September 6, is also the final chance for any horse to be supplemented, at a cost of £45,000.

Ladbrokes St Leger
– ante-post prices: 7/4 Rewilding, 5/1 Snow Fairy, 6/1 Arctic Cosmos, 7/1 Dandino, 7/1 Midas Touch, 10/1 Cape Blanco, 10/1 Joshua Tree, 25/1 Buzzword, 25/1 Ted Spread, 25/1 Theology, 22/1 Corsica, 33/1 Flying Cross, 33/1 Total Command, 50/1 Await The Dawn, 100/1 Vibrant Force, 200/1 Bright Horizon

Frankie Dettorri won easily

Midas Touch remains at 4/1 after finishing second whilst third-placed Joshua Tree ran an eye-catching race on his seasonal reappearance and has been cut to 12/1 (from 25/1) for the Doncaster classic.

‘Rewilding’s effortless victory in the Great Voltigeur means he is now a warm favourite for the St Leger but perhaps the most eye-catching performance came from third-placed Joshua Tree who could still make up into Ballydoyle’s main hope for the final classic of the season,’ said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

Elsewhere on the card, Waiter’s Dream stormed to victory in the sportingbet.com Acomb Stakes and has been introduced into the betting for the 2000 Guineas at 33/1 by totesport.

William Hill….

A resurgent Godolphin emerged with their strongest Classic contender of the year following a victory by Derby third Rewilding in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York this afternoon.

The win changed the landscape of next month’s St Leger betting, with the son of Tiger Hill cut to 2-1 from 9-2 to top the betting, and previous favourite Midas Touch eased to 11-2 from 7-2. Hills also slashed the odds of Royal Lodge winner Joshua Tree to 8-1 from 25-1 who, after looming as a possible victor two furlongs out, faded in the latter stages following a 325-day absence from the track.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’In an almost exact replica of last year Godolphin have emerged with a strong mid-season run, taking valuable races, and producing another live Leger candidate. Our post-race offering of 5-2 about Rewilding was immediately snapped-up by punters and they clearly rate him as the one to beat.’’

Ladbrokes St Leger: 2-1 Rewilding, 11-2 Midas Touch, 6-1 Snow Fairy, 7-1 Arctic Cosmos, Dandino, 8-1 Cape Blanco, Joshua Tree, 12-1 Buzzword, Monterosso, 16-1 Simon De Montfort, 25-1 At First Sight, Flying Cross, Theology, Total Command, 33-1 bar(EW 1/4 1,2,3)

Dandy Man new Hunt Cup favourite as Mabait misses Royal Ascot

Dandy Man is the new 10/1 favourite for the Royal Hunt Cup with totesport following the news that ante-post favourite Mabait will miss the race at next weeks Royal Ascot. Betting update for Royal Ascot….

Godolphin trains Dandy Man

Luca Cumani’s colt could only finish third behind Bushman when upped to group company at Epsom over the weekend and his trainer has confirmed that he will sidestep Royal Ascot.

‘Mabait showed he was well up to winning in group company at Epsom last week and it looks like handicaps are off the agenda for the time being,’ said totesport spokesman George Primarolo. ‘His Victoria Cup conqueror Dandy Boy now heads the market for another competitive-looking renewal of the Royal Hunt Cup.’

Consequently, Mabait’s stablemate Acrostic has shortened in the betting with totesport for the mile handicap and is now a 14/1 shot (from 16/1). Andrew Balding’s Riggins has also been cut to 14/1 (from 16s).

Elsewhere, Happy Zero has been popular ahead of a possible crack at the Golden Jubilee Stakes and has been cut to 11/1 (from 12/1).

Investec Derby Preview, Frankie Dettori To Win On Rewilding

The Investec Derby, 4pm Epsom, Live Ch4 and RUK

The biggest flat race in the world is the Investec Derby which was won last year by the amazing Sea The Stars. In 2010 there are twelve colts bidding to land the first prize of a mere £771,000. I think Frankie Dettori will win the Derby aboard Rewilding.

Frankie Dettori rides for Godolphin on Rewilding

The betting shows that Jan Vermeer, the mount of Johnny Murtagh is the13/8 favourite, making him a very short price to land the prize.  At the prices though I like the chances of Rewilding, trained by Mamood Alzarooni and ridden by Frankie Dettori, who has only won the Investec Derby once before in 2007.

At Goodwood in the Cocked Hat Stakes Rewilding ran really well, pulling away over a mile and three, suggesting that he will get every yard of the extra furlong at Epsom. Supplemented at a cost of £45,000 by Godolphin I think he has a great chance. Jan Vermeer could be the real deal, but will need to step up on what we have seen so far. I would like to see Henry Cecil win the Derby again but I was highly impressed with Rewilding. There could be much more in the Rewilding Tank so at 15/2 I think he is a great each-way price.

I know some people will be unhappy with this view but should Frankie Dettori win the Derby it will be good for headlines and ultimately for Racing. He is one of only two personalities widely known outside racing. The other been Big John McCrirck. However it is all about the horse and Rewilding is the serious pick for the Investec Derby at 13/2.

Investec Derby – totesport bet: 13/8 Jan Vermeer, 5 Workforce, 11/2 (from 6) Midas Touch, 6 Bullet Train, 15/2 Rewilding, 12 Azmeel, 20 Al Zir, Coordinated Cut, 33 Ted Spread, 50 Buzzword, Hot Prospect, 150 At First Sight.

Wednesdays Free Horseracing Tips, 2 June

Its Wednesday, second day of this sporting month which I am looking forward to. The good stuff kicks off at Epsom on Friday with The Oaks and The Derby on Saturday. Here are your Free Horseracing Tips for Wednesday.

Free Horseracing Tips for Wednesday

Wednesday is not bad, particularly at Nottingham it has to be said where there are a couple of decent races. Here are your Free Horseracing Tips for Wednesday 2 June.  I will be focusing on the meeting at Nottingham.

3:45 Nottingham Forjatt can continue the excellent form of the Michael Jarvis stable who boasts a near 30% strike rate for the season. Likely to be no price at all, particularly with Dettori in the saddle, but she could turn out to be decent and one to watch for bigger prizes ahead. Small field means no price. Shame.

4:50 Nottingham Rio De La Plata could provide a welcome winner for Godolphin and Bin Suroor who has saddled 20 runners in the last two weeks and has failed to win any of those races. Rated 114, Rio De La Plata  should have no trouble beating this field if he can run to within a few pounds of that rating. He was a Group One performer but this is a drop in grade, he really should do the business but the stable form is a worry. Surely he should win this with the assistance of Frankie Dettori in the saddle.

5:25 Nottingham Field Day looks a very exciting filly. Brian Meehan’s filly won very nicely on her debut last season and is bred to be a nice sort. The stable’s débutantes always come on for a first run, so one that wins first time up is always noteworthy. The trip of a mile will suit and I imagine the mark of 85 is of concern to connections.  However, the maiden she won has thrown up plenty of winners and she is definitely one to watch and one to back here.

Rewilding 10s for Derby as Godolphin unearth a realistic Derby contender

Rewilding provided a shot in the arm for Godolphin’s Investec Derby hopes after he quickened four lengths clear under Frankie Dettori in the bluesquare.com Cocked Hat Stakes.

Picture

Transferred from Andre Fabre to Sheikh Mohammed’s second British trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni two weeks ago, the Tiger Hill colt needs supplementing at a cost of £75,000 for the Classic and is just 10-1 with Coral and Ladbrokes. The even-money favourite for his British debut, Rewilding travelled conservatively for Dettori and settled matters when kicking on over a furlong out.

Stan James introduced the listed Goodwood winner Rewilding into their Derby betting at 10/1 following colts impressive success. He will need supplementing for the race but connections suggest that is the plan for the Godolphin trained colt who was in the care of Andre Fabre for his previous runs in France.

The Derby 2010 ~ Outright Ante Post, (place terms: 1/4 the first 3)

Godolphin to win at Goodwood

3:45 Goodwood Rewilding. Godolphin have not enjoyed much success in either the Derby or Oaks for a while now, but Rewilding and Wedding March can forward their Epsom claims at Goodwood. The pair have transferred to Mahmood Al Zarooni and Saeed bin Suroor respectively after previously being handled by master French trainer Andre Fabre. Rewilding would have to be supplemented for Epsom and he lines up in the bluesquare.com Cocked Hat Stakes following a good second in Group Two company for Fabre last month. Winner of one of his two juvenile starts, Rewilding was beaten a length and a half in the Prix Noailles before the Godolphin team decided to recruit him to their squad. There is not too much to go on in terms of form from that race, but the third has since filled the same place in the Prix Hocquart and Rewilding has certainly been running in better company than most of his rivals. He hails from a top-class family, with Dar Re Mi and Hong Kong Star River Dancer among his half-siblings, and while there is a suspicion a little cut might suit, Godolphin’s colt will take some topping.
Bet Live With inrunningodds.com

2:35 Goodwood Wedding March will be having her first start since last October in the Blue Square Height of Fashion Stakes. A winner on her debut at Longchamp, Fabre stepped her right up to Group One level in the Marcel Boussac and she ran with great credit to finish fourth behind Rosanara. Wedding March never really looked like holding on against some speedier rivals, but this daughter of Dalakhani is bred to excel over trips in excess of a mile. Obviously she is at a disadvantage against some race-fit rivals but Bin Suroor is more than capable of turning her out in top fettle.

2:00 Goodwood Memory. Richard Hannon can bag the opening EBF Mel Wood “Celebration of Life” Maiden Fillies’ Stakes for the third successive year with Memory. The trainer fields two but Richard Hughes’ mount is evidently the best of the stable pair.

5:20 Lingfield Mishrif was rated 97 at his peak and, competing off a mark some 15lb lower, he must be one to note in the lingfieldpark.co.uk Handicap at the Surrey venue. Twice placed in Listed company for Peter Chapple-Hyam, he looked set for a decent three-year-old career but struggled to find his feet and really lost his way last summer. However, he shaped with a little more promise when third on his first start for John Jenkins last month, although he failed to land a gamble when beaten four and a half lengths. First-time blinkers back at Yarmouth seemed to pique his interest last time when second and racing off this kind of mark, he is worth taking a chance on in average company.

6:50 Worcester Silver Story is worth a chance in the Dinner In The Severn Restaurant Beginners’ Chase at Worcester. The seven-year-old was merely adequate over hurdles and he looked similarly average when third in a hunter chase on his debut over fences last month. However, he has since won in point-to-point company so is evidently capable and in a weak-looking affair, he can take advantage.

2:45 kelso Quick Will boasts two wins in two starts at Kelso and he can maintain that 100% record in the NFU Mutual Risk Management Services Novices’ Chase. A winner over a shorter trip on his fencing bow last month, James Ewart’s charge looks one with plenty of improvement still to give.

Chabal Lays Down Derby Gauntlet

Godolphin made their first major contribution to the new Flat season as Chabal pulled encouragingly clear in the bet365 Classic Trial at Sandown.

Picture

Sheikh Mohammed’s team is now split into various fragments around Europe and this was just the third British runner from senior trainer Saeed Bin Suroor’s stable. Chabal was acquired from Jim Bolger after he finished runner-up in the National Stakes on only his second start but let himself down somewhat on his final run in the Dewhurst Stakes.

A lot of remedial work seems to have been carried out to get the son of Galileo to settle better and Frankie Dettori buried him in the pack for much of the way. Sent off the 7-4 favourite, Chabal made progress with two furlongs to run, picking off Azmeel and striding away to win by two and a quarter lengths. The Group Three has a patchy recent past as a pointer to the Investec Derby, although it has produced two winners since 1986 in Shahrastani and Benny The Dip.

Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford said:

“It was important to get lots of cover today as he was still very fresh. The main thing was that Frankie got him nice and relaxed as he was very keen in the Dewhurst. He will probably go for the Dante now but it all depends on how the horse is, otherwise he will go straight to Epsom.”

Frankie Dettori added:

“At the top of the straight I thought I was in trouble but he has galloped all the way to the line. He stays well and hopefully he is now on the Derby trail.”

Azmeel’s rider William Buick was given a two-day careless riding ban (May 7 and 8), while trainer John Gosden said: “I’m very pleased and hopefully it will be onwards and upwards. We will probably look for another trial, either at Chester, York or Lingfield.”

Trainer Shake Up at Godolphin

Godolphin are to split their string in both Newmarket and Dubai with the addition of Mahmood Al Zarooni to the training roster alongside Saeed bin Suroor.

Picture

The Dubai national has been assistant to Bin Suroor for over a year and will take charge of Moulton Paddocks in Newmarket, where Godolphin were originally based, when Sheikh Mohammed‘s operation return to Britain in three weeks’ time.

Former camel jockey Ahmed Ajtebi will primarily ride for Al Zarooni with Frankie Dettori maintaining his partnership with Bin Suroor.

Al Zarooni will have his first runners from his Al Asfa stables on the outskirts of Dubai this weekend with seven representatives on Dubai World Cup night, including Allybar in the World Cup itself. Al Zarooni said:

“I am very grateful to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for giving me this opportunity.  It has been a privilege being part of the Godolphin team under Saeed bin Suroor for the past year, and I now look forward to the challenge of operating my own stable.”

In a statement, racing manager Simon Crisford said: “Mahmood has been an important part of the team for some time and has been closely involved with the training of horses he will saddle on World Cup night.

“With more two-year-olds coming through the system the time is now right for Godolphin to employ two trainers. Godolphin has already been allocated a team of two-year-olds for 2010 but there are more due to come in and Mahmood will be taking care of many of those horses. Saeed and I talked it though with Sheikh Mohammed and we all agreed it would be a good idea to have another trainer.”

Crisford added at Godolphin‘s open morning at Al Quoz:

“Saeed trained more than 200 horses last year and with some more coming in he didn’t want to have so many horses. It is time to share the workload and Mahmood has been a great asset while working under Saeed. We will have two stables both here (Dubai) and in Newmarket and have a sufficient number of horses to justify it. Mahmood will have a few more two-year-olds but the allocation of horses will take place as and when. Primarily Frankie will ride for Saeed and Ahmed for Mahmood. There will be occasions where they swap but largely that is how it will work although nothing is set in stone and there are no retainers.”

Bin Suroor will continue to operate Godolphin‘s American barn, with the likes of Andre Fabre and Mark Johnston saddling a number of Sheikh Mohammed’s juveniles. Meanwhile Godolphin suffered a set back before the season has started.

Kingsfort, Godolphin‘s leading chance for the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas, has been ruled out of the first Classic of the season on May 1 after meeting with a setback.

Picture

Sheikh Mohammed snapped up the War Chant colt after his second career started yielded success in the Group One National Stakes at the Curragh, and he was just 14-1 with Coral to provided Godolphin with their first 2000 Guineas win since Island Sands in 1999. Racing manager Simon Crisford said:

Kingsfort is not going to make the Guineas as he has had a setback. He had some smart form last year, beating the likes of Chabal, and will be back for the second half of the season.”

Another missing from Godolphin‘s Classic squad is Flying Childers heroine Sand Vixen. Crisford added of the Doncaster winner:

“She was always going to be a horse for the sprint races, but has also had a setback. She will not run in the 1000 Guineas and we will get her back for the sprint races later in the year.”

However, trainer Saeed bin Suroor still has some useful shots to fire in the Classic division with Passion For Gold quoted as the 10-1 second favourite behind St Nicholas Abbey for the Investec Derby.

The Thirsk maiden winner was beaten by that rival in the Beresford Stakes last summer but progressed when tackling heavy ground and 10 furlongs for the first time to land the Criterium de Saint-Cloud.

“He will probably start off in the Dante and is potentially a nice horse,” Crisford said. I don’t think he necessarily needs soft ground but he did appear to improve on it last year. St Nicholas Abbey did make him look slightly one-paced, though, and he will need to step up again this year.”

Godolphin also have a strong Oaks contender in the shape of Hibaayeb who joined the team after landing the Fillies’ Mile for Clive Brittain.

“She is a possible for the Oaks and a mile and a half will suit her best,” commented Crisford. She may or may not start off in the Guineas but has done well through the winter.”

Long Lashes was another acquisition last year with the Rock Hard Ten filly joining Bin Suroor from Jessica Harrington’s stable. She looked good winning the Sweet Solera first time up but floundered on soft ground afterwards and was then well beaten in the Fillies’ Mile.

“She looked good mid-summer but we ran her on soft ground at the Curragh in the Moyglare and she wasn’t the same afterwards,” Crisford continued. She is on course for the 1000 Guineas and would be an outsider in that race.”

Although Kingsfort is out of the 2000 Guineas, Sheikh Mohammed could still be well represented by the likes of Chabal, Poet’s Voice and Emerald Commander.

Fridays Breeders Cup Tips and Preview

By Carl Harris

By Carl Harris

Carl Harris looks at the 2009 Breeders Cup and gives you his bets bets….

The Breeders Cup take place at Santa Anita again, in California USA, billed (mainly by the Americans) as the World Championships of horseracing. Without being cynical it is excellent racing and the European’s have a strong challenge which could do very well given the climate and the surface. Last year was a success for European raiders, will it be better this term?

It all kicks off on Friday, over two days with the big night being Saturday but Friday is a decent card, to say the least. We will pick the best bets on the card, focusing on the home challenge.

Fridays Races, 6 November…

  • 20:35, Breeders’ Cup Marathon (Synthetic)
  • 21:08, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf
  • 21:45, Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (Synthetic)
  • 22:23, Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf
  • 23:02, Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (Synthetic)
  • 23:45, Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (Synthetic)

Here are my suggested bets for Friday at The Breeders Cup

The Marathon

When you say Marathon you think of a long distance, its 1m 6f, hardly what we would call a marathon but there you go! This is a race that should go to a British trained horse and it is Mastery that heads the market, from the inform Godolphin yard. He won the St Leger over this ‘marathon’ trip and assuming he has recovered can show his class and win the opener. Best price is on Betfair, as many will be for the Breeders Cup meet.
Frankie Dettori rides for Godolphin at the Breeders Cup

Frankie Dettori rides for Godolphin at the Breeders Cup

Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint

Ventura won this race last year, in good style and is a warm order to do so again. There is some difference in price ranging from 10/11 to 5/4, but I suggest she will be about evens. Just watch last year’s race (from Youtube);

Ventura has the class, she won the grade one Woodbine mile in September and could have run in the mile but she is better at a shorter trip say connections who would love to defend their title. I think she will and the form book says she should. Here she is winning the Woodbine mile, her turn of foot is her strength, a class mare who is banker bet material.

Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic

I am tempted to back Rainbow View each-way in the closing race on Fridays card. Firstly John Gosden is one man who knows how to win at Santa Anita having spent many years here as a trainer. He showed that last year with Ravens Pass who was a nearly horse for the first part of the season. Rainbow View may flourish here and at the 6/1 on offer I think we are getting some value. 1m 1f may be her idea trip, she has the speed and the class and is certainly worth a sporting bet. Frankie Dettori takes the ride, another positive. She looks well, here is her workout earlier this week…

So three bets on Friday….

  • 20:35, Breeders’ Cup Marathon- Mastery
  • 23:02, Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint- Ventura
  • 23:45, Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic – Rainbow View, e/w
