Lionel Messi eclipses Cristiano Ronaldo as Argentina beat Portugal

Messi and Ronaldo……..Argentina and Portugal……….
Powered by Guardian.co.ukThis article titled “Lionel Messi eclipses Cristiano Ronaldo as Argentina beat Portugal” was written by Paul Doyle, for The Guardian on Thursday 10th February 2011 00.03 UTC

Lionel Messi once again prevailed in the duel of the world’s best two players as he converted an 89th-minute penalty to give Argentina a 2-1 win over Portugal in an entertaining and acrimonious friendly in Geneva.

Cristiano Ronaldo, eclipsed by the Argentinian when Barcelona demolished Real Madrid 5-0 in November, was handed the captaincy by Paulo Bento and looked to set to be overshadowed again when Messi threaded a wonderful ball through for Ángel di María to open the scoring for Argentina in the 14th minute.

However Portugal, who thumped the world champions Spain 4-0 in their last outing, came back strongly, with Ronaldo and Nani sparkling on the wings. Ronaldo showed expert skills in the 21st minute to draw the teams level, seizing on a Hugo Almeida flick-on before firing into the net from 10 yards. Thereafter the match was marked by thrilling attacking play and rugged scuffles, with Messi feeling particularly aggrieved by the treatment he was receiving from Raul Meireles of Liverpool.

Portugal started the second half the stronger but the momentum swung back in Argentina’s favour when Ronaldo and Nani were withdrawn after an hour. Argentina’s substitute Javier Pastore headed powerfully against the bar in the 85th minute and then, four minutes later Fábio Coentrão chopped down Manchester City’s Pablo Zabaleta in the area to present Messi with the chance to snatch victory. Naturally he did not waste the opportunity.

Carlos Tévez did not feature for Argentina, having been left out of the squad by the manager, Sergio Batista. This omission was initially interpreted as a favour to his club ahead of the Manchester derby. However it has emerged that the City striker was being punished for pulling out of the friendly against Brazil in November, apparently because of injury, and then lining up for his club against Fulham four days later.

“I think that Tévez’s absence is because of his attitude when he didn’t come to play [against Brazil] and shortly after he took the field for his club,” the Argentina FA president, Jorge Grondona, told Radio Pop in Buenos Aires. “That attitude didn’t go down well with the coaching staff; it was a lot easier to tell us that he didn’t want to come.”

In another of the night’s glamorous friendlies, France confirmed that their reconstruction under Laurent Blanc is on the right course, following up their emphatic win over England at Wembley in November by beating Brazil 1-0 in Paris.

Brazil seem less advanced in their rebuilding and became a rabble once the Lazio midfielder Hernanes was sent off in the 41st minute for a chest-high tackle on Karim Benzema.

The Real Madrid striker was at the heart of most of France’s attacks and could have scored several goals, being thwarted on three occasions by the goalkeeper Julio César. He had to settle for a solitary goal, which he scored from close range in the 54th minute after excellent work by Jeremy Menez.

In another rerun of a past World Cup final, Germany and Italy drew 1-1 in front of 60,000 fans in Dortmund. Germany dominated the first half and took the lead when Miroslav Klose hit his 59th international goal by putting the final touch on a fast and intricate move involving Mesut Ozil and Thomas Müller. Italy, who handed a first cap to the Brazil-born midfielder Thiago Motta, fought back in the second half, thanks largely to the introduction of Alberto Aquilani. Villarreal’s Giuseppe Rossi, the player for whom Tottenham Hotspur reportedly bid £35m in January, equalised in the 81st minute.

Manchester City’s David Silva struck an 86th-minute winner to give Spain a laboured victory over Colombia in Madrid. Wigan Athletic’s Hugo Rodallega had a glaring chance to equalise for the South Americans in the final minute but blasted over from close range.

The surprise of the night, other than Iran‘s 1-0 win over Russia, perhaps came in Malta, where England’s European Championship group rivals Switzerland were held to a 0-0 draw. The Swiss contributed to that result by missing two penalties.

Germany v Spain World Cup Betting Preview

Wednesday sees the second World Cup Semi-Final, as Germany face Spain for a place in the World Cup Final. Germany have an amazing World Cup record, but Spain have never won it. This is the biggest match in the history of Spanish Football. Despite being favourites I think Germany will prevail here and go on to win the World Cup.

Miroslav Klose, at 32, is the oldest player for the youngest German side in the World Cup since 1934.

Germany’s World Cup harmony may have been disrupted after skipper Philipp Lahm said he had no intention of willingly giving up the captain’s armband when Michael Ballack returns to fitness. Read more in the Telegraph

It has been a bit-part show for Cesc Fàbregas in this World Cup, but the Spanish midfielder is challenging striker Fernando Torres for a starting place in Wednesday’s semi-final against Germany, the team he calls the “strongest in the tournament”. For Germany though Bastian Schweinsteiger is the man who is the key to success. Despite being second favourites I am of the firm view that Germany will win and advise a decent bet on them to do so.

Germany have scored 13 goals from 28 shots on target. That is a clinical strike rate of 46%, suggesting that if there are few chances, Germany are the team to capitalise. They are free scoring having scored four goals three times in this World Cup.

Stan James will refund losing stakes on all goalscorer markets (first/last/anytime/hat-trick/scorecast) if Miroslav Klose scores at anytime during the 90 minutes on on Wednesday evening. This has to be worth considering given that he is scoring for fun. Klose’s second-half brace helped complete a staggering 4-0 quarter-final win over Argentina in Cape Town, giving the 32-year-old four goals in South Africa and drawing him level with compatriot Gerd Müller on 14 at World Cups. He only needs one goal to break the record. You can bet with Stan James if he will do so;

I would suggest that Klose is a great bet, 11-4 to score one goal in this match or the final, should Germany get there. Well I think they will. I am a bick backer here of Germany to qualify at Evens. I also like the 15/8 to win in 90 minutes, but will have a big bet at Evens on Germany to qualify. Even if it was extra-time or penalties I favour the Germans.

I think that the Germans will win the World Cup.

A great weekend of Football Betting, but has it been a classic World Cup? Who will contest the final and who will win the World Cup? Plus more news on what went wrong for England in the latest World Cup Betting Podcast.

So Uruguay play Holland and Germany play Spain in the World Cup Semi-Finals. Spain are favourites to win the World Cup, but we think that Germany are the value here. Listen to the thoughts of the team on our Podcast. Liam thinks Uruguay are value to win the World Cup and the 6/1 to beat Holland is good value, but its Germany for me to win the World Cup.

There is no doubt that Germany have been the surprise package at the World Cup but they will surely not find the Spanish defence as benovolent as the English or Argentinian were in Durban on Wednesday evening. Spain are just favourites at 8/5 with Germany 9/5 and the draw 11/5 with Stan James.

Indeed Stan James are betting 12/1 that the Germans score 4 or more goals in the semi-final (90 mins). Spain are the 15/8 favourites to add the World Title to their European success of 2008 when they easily disposed of a German side in transition. Fernando Torres scored the only goal of the game in Vienna two years ago and Spain were much superior on that occasion. Torres has struggled throughout the World Cup and he is likely to be on the bench on Wednesday with Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas or Athletico Bilboa’s Fernando Llorente introduced to the starting line-up.

Spain are 4/5 to qualify with Germany Even money and that is surely based on reputation rather than what we have witnessed so far in South Africa. It is of course possible that Germany’s attacking style will play into the hands of the Spanish who have been forced to try to break down their defensive-minded opponents in each of their five games in this World Cup to date. Spain will be bidding to become the first nation to win the World Cup having lost their first game in the competition. We haven’t seen the best of La Roja at this tournament although they have done just enough to reach the last four. David Villa is 4/9 to win the Golden Boot and StanJames.com are betting 9/4 that Spain lift the Trophy on Sunday night with Villa top scorer.

Holland are 2/1 with StanJames.com to win Sunday’s World Cup and they ought to have too much for a resilient Uruguay in Cape Town on Tuesday. Uruguay have performed wonders when you consider they are a nation of less than 3 million in reaching the semi-finals and few would have thought they would be the last standing South American country when they drew their first game with France 0-0 last month. Diego Forlan has been a revelation and he is 7/1 to score Tuesday’s opening goal but the Oranje are firm favourites at 4/6 to win in 90 minutes.

Stan James will refund all losing stakes on all goalscorer markets (first/last/anytime/hat-trick/scorecast) if Diego Forlan scores anytime during the 90 minutes on Tuesday and exactly the same with Miroslav Klose on Wednesday evening.

Breaking News: Did Germany Field and Invalid Player?

Turkey coach Guus Hiddink has incredibly accused German star Mesut Ozil of possessing an invalid German passport.

http://mediadb.kicker.de/news/1000/1020/1100/7000/interview/704184/__zil-1234173806_zoom88_crop_500x375_500x375+0+28.jpg

Both German daily Bild and media in Italy have reported Hiddink’s claim. The former Chelsea coach said, “The German passport of Mesut Ozil is false. The document was falsified to allow the player to play for Germany, but he has no such right.”

Ozil has been one of the brightest stars at the World Cup so far. The 21-year-old Werder Bremen star has both scored and set up crucial goals for Germany as they have marched confidently into the quarter-finals. Unsurprisingly, some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Barcelona and Arsenal are being linked with Ozil.

Dutch coach Hiddink recently took over as Turkey coach. Ozil has Turkish parents and although he was born in Gelsenkirchen in Germany, he was apparently offered the chance to play for Turkey last year, but instead opted to play for the country of his birth.

If true then England may have a right to protest to FIFA, but it seems rather a strange claim to make.

England Germany, World Cup Betting Specials

The World cup is already on course to become the biggest betting event of all time with over £1 billion gambled for the first time on any one tournament, bookies are predicting that England versus Germany on Sunday could produce the biggest betting turnover ever for an individual match.

Charlie McCann thinks England need to be better up front. Rooney is 6/4 to be substituted in the 90 minutes. We should be on course for a record TV audience on Sunday. It is hot so plenty of barbecues and what about 150/1 for England to win 4-2 in extra-time, like 1966.

England (13/8) are marginal favourites to beat Germany (7/4) with StanJames.com ahead of tomorrow’s last 16 World Cup clash in Bloemfontein with the draw at 11/5. We have a number of specials on the match including:

How Will the Match Be Won?

13/8   England 90 minutes
7-4    Germany 90 Mins
9       Germany Penalties
9       England Penalties
11    Germany Extra Time
11    England Extra Time

Number of England Players Singing or Miming the National Anthem?

4-6    Over 8.5
11-10    Under 8.5

England to win 5-1 250/1
England to win 4-2 after extra time 150/1
Wayne Rooney hat-trick 33/1
Match to go to penalties 5/1 (either side to win)

How many of the last 16 matches will be decided after extra time?
Over 2.5 11/10
Under 2.5 4/6

How many of the last 16 matches will be decided on penalties?
Over 1.5 6/5
Under 1.5 8/13

England to lose on penalties has been very popular at 9/1 and there is a horse called Dortmund running at Newcastle this afternoon which I think has a favourites chance. We are betting 9/2 that it is a good weekend for Dortmund and its inhabitants with the Godolphin juvenile winning the 4.15 at Gosforth Park and Germany beating England in South Africa. It is likely to start a shade of odds on.

The Northumberland Plate is the big betting race of the weekend and I am very sweet on the chances of the 4/1 favourite Deauville Flyer (3.05) despite the fact that he would, ideally, prefer softer ground . He is well drawn in stall 6, stays well and, despite a 5lb penalty, will carry only 8st 3lbs. You always need a bit of luck in running in these big handicaps but Deauville Flyer does look the proverbial blot on the handicap.

The European Grand Prix takes place in Valencia tomorrow. Ahead of this afternoon’s qualifying Lewis Hamilton was the 5/2 favourite to gain a hat-trick of F1 wins but it promises to be a wide open race with the Red Bull’s and Ferrari’s looking to arrest the recent McLaren domination. Check out StanJames.com for all your sporting needs.

Uruguay are 5/6 favourites with StanJames.com for today’s opening World Cup clash in the round of the last 16 with England’s Group winners USA 8/5 to beat the sole African representatives left in the competition Ghana. Today’s WC fixtures:
Uruguay 5/6  Draw 5/2 and South Korea 7/2
USA 8/5 Draw 11/5 and Ghana 7/4

World Cup Betting, Weekend Preview and Podcast

We have something for the weekend, a look at Saturday and Sundays matches at the World Cup. It is a huge weekend for English Football as England square up to the old enemy, the Germans on Sunday. Can England do it? World Cup betting Update…..

World Cup Betting Tips

England World Cup Fans, The Bets

Could history repeat itself? It is 9/2 to go to penalties with England 10/1 to win a shoot-out and Germany 9/1, but there is some great news in todays Sun, we are better at Penalties than the current German team. In a great article they reveal that the players in Germany’s squad in South Africa scored 23 penalties in 29 attempts, a success rate of 79 per cent. But Three Lions stars tucked away 79 out of 98, or 80 per cent. England keeper David James is better at stopping spot kicks than German goalie Manuel Neuer. James has saved nine out of 29, a rate of 37.9 per cent. Neuer has kept out four of 11, or 36.4 per cent.

It is still very tight, but I don’t think it will go to penalties. England look solid at the back and can nick this 1-0 in my view, although a nice 5-1 repeat would be most welcome. England can still win the World Cup in my view at least.

So the weekend at The World Cup, World Cup Betting Update;

Saturday World Cup Betting
15:00 Uruguay (10/11)v (5/2)South Korea (4)
Uruguay should win here…

19:30 USA (7/4)v (23/10)Ghana (15/8)
Tight game, England should have been here, but USA can progress I feel…

Sunday World Cup Betting
15:00 Germany (19/10)v (11/5) England (17/10)
The big one, 1-0 to England in my view….

19:30 Argentina (8/15)v (10/3)Mexico (6)

England Will Face Germany on Sunday, World Cup Betting Update

ENGLAND 10/1 TO BEAT GERMANS – IN PENALTY SHOOT OUT!

Germany beat Ghana 1-0 while other Group D competitors Australia beat Serbia 2-1. That means that Germany to their group and will now play England on Sunday, the old enemies meet again in the World Cup!

I find the bookmakers reaction surprising. They make England the  8/11 favourites to beat Germany in the World Cup Last 16. Could it be another penalty shoot out? The bookmakers are already offering odds of 10/1 on that happening. Can it happen again?

‘Fate will have some unexpected drama in store for us – and why shouldn’t it be, at long last, a penalty shoot-out win over the Germans?’ said Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe.

England were shortened to as low as 7/1 earlier today to win the World Cup, but have been eased out to 9/1, now that England will take on Germany in the next round.

Franz Beckenbauer, has he had a World Cup Bet on Germany?

Franz Beckenbauer has put the boot into England accusing them of playing “kick and rush” football. He also claims that the English system suffers because it does not create enough high-quality players in the Premiership. Fabio Capello’s team got off to a slow start in South Africa at the World Cup, drawing 1-1 with the USA.

Franz Beckenbauer (right) and Joachim Loew

Beckenbauer (right) has also said he thinks England can win the World Cup if Wayne Rooney shines

ENGLAND are 16/1 to dump Germany out of the World Cup, following criticism by the great Franz Beckenbauer. The Three Lions are 7/1 to lift the trophy with Germany a 9/1 chance. Fabio Capello’s men are 4/9 to win their group.

The Germans are trying to unsettle England, they have also been playing the World Cup Ball since Jaunuary in the German League. I say Franz Beckenbauer you are a great man, but you are yesterday’s man, so please lets get on with today’s business at hand. Come on England, lets land this 16/1 World Cup bet. Remember this….
