Frankie Dettorri can Guide Poet's Voice Home at Goodwood

Goodwood’s Thursday evening card was abandoned due to waterlogging but today’s meeting goes ahead and there may be a potential star on show.

The Gp 3 Prestige Stakes has been won by some decent fillies’ in recent years and all eyes will be on the second start of Richard Hannon’s Date With Destiny who is the sole progeny of ill-fated 2006 2000 Guineas winner George Washington whose career at stud was short-lived because of fertility problems.

Date With Destiny
showed she had inherited much of her father’s natural brilliance when landing a good Newbury maiden on debut. That run was on fast ground, however, and ground conditions are likely to be at least soft at the Sussex track and there must be a concern about Date With Destiny being as effective under such conditions.

Runner up in a listed race at Sandown last time Cochambaba has the best form in the book, but few juveniles have created a more favourable impression with me than Theyskens’ Theory this season (3.40) and she is a confident selection.

In need of the experience at Newmarket on debut she was a different proposition back on the July course last time when she routed the opposition up to 7f in a time that compared favourably with older horses earlier in the afternoon. The runner up Blue Bunting has subsequently landed a mile maiden (watch out for 2nd Midnight Caller at Leicester next week) at Doncaster and if Theyskens’ Theory is to line up in the Fillies’ Mile at Ascot next month she must go close although she, too, is unproven on soft or heavy ground.

The feature race of the day is the Gp 2 Celebration Mile which has attracted just the four runners. Main Aim has never won beyond 7f but is proven on soft ground and looked ready for a step back up in trip when finishing strongly in a better contest at the Sussex track last time. He is likely to start favourite given his ability to handle the ground but I am keen on Poet’s Voice (3.05) who was a leading juvenile last term but like so many Godolphin three-year-olds lost his way in the first half of the season.

Ridden with more restraint at Salisbury last time Poet’s Voice was only beaten a nose and that form has already been franked by stablemate Secrecy’s win at Kempton during the week. The father of Poet’s Voice Dubawi was well-served by soft ground and Frankie Dettori takes over this afternoon.

I have often pondered what shall we do with a Drunken Sailor (2.30) and the answer on this occasion is to try and win the listed March Stakes. The selection looked all over the winner when taking it up two furlongs from home last time but was run out of it close home. Jockey Kieren Fallon is likely to leave his challenge much later this time although Wajir looks a big danger given he has been running on unsuitably fast ground so far this year.

Bated Breath (3.20) would be something to bet on if the ground dried out appreciably at Newmarket given he looked an unlucky loser over C&D last time and is taken to return to winning ways in the appropriately named Hopeful Stakes.

Richard Hughes
takes over from Jimmy Fortune on the recommendation and many believed at the time it was pilot error that was the key to Bated Breath losing his unbeaten record at Newmarket given Fortune went left to challenge at the furlong pole when the action was unfolding to his right.

Royal Windsor stage their final evening fixture of the season and also their feature race of the whole season the Gp 3 Winter Hill Stakes. Only five go to post but all have realistic chances including the impressive Haydock winner Hot Prospect (6.40) who looked a totally different proposition encountering soft ground for the first time earlier in the month. In receipt of weight from his elders Hot Prospect represents the in-form Michael Jarvis and as there is plenty of juice in the ground he ought to take the beating.

As a son of Sadler’s Wells Bullet Train (6.10) is bred to improve racing on a slow surface for the first time, and it is interesting that the great Henry Cecil has given him a ten-week break since Royal Ascot. Lightly-raced this represents a drop in class and if as effective on soft ground he should take the beating.

Bullet train- one to back

Morache Music
(5.40) is held in some regard by trainer Peter Makin and October’s valuable two-year-old Trophy at Redcar is reportedly his end of season target. Connections must want to get some more experience into the colt and under normal circumstances his draw in stall 11 would be considered ideal but on soft ground don’t be surprised if the horses meander over to the far rail.

        Tuesday’s Horseracing Tips, 21st July

It is a real struggle today, not the best day for punting and if you were going to take a day away from racing this week, Tuesday would be the ideal candidate.

Ffos Las stages it’s first flat meeting today, which will be interesting. Of course we know noting about any draw or track biases and I prefer to wait and see how things go before punting at the new venue.

Well handicapped jumper for us today....

Well handicapped jumper for us today....

5.15 Yarmouth – Silver Prelude, Win

Silver Prelude (5.15) was a good winner last week over course and distance and teams up again with Kevin Shea in a bid for a double. The six pounds penalty shouldn’t inconvenience the eight year-old whose seven career wins have all come over the minimum trip. On a difficult day Silver Prelude represents one of the better bets of the day and my only flat wager of the day.

        6.30 Bangor- Arctic Shadow, Win

Arctic Shadow (6.30) is looking to land a quick hat-trick within the space of a few days. Richard Johnson has won twice for the stable aboard the seven year old who is looking to maintain his 100 percent record for his new trainer. The quick reappearance indicates that Tim Vaughan must think he has a very well handicapped horse on his hands and as we saw with Little Shilling he knows how to maximise opportunities when he has. It would be a surprise were this one not to win today.

Time to Look Busy at Ayr…

Look Busy Each Way at Ayr...

Look Busy Each Way at Ayr...

After a washout on Sunday there are four flat meetings to get stuck in to and it looks a decent day’s racing. It’s Monday and we are looking at a £40,000 handicap at Ayr, which is as good as it is unusual.

It is by far the best race of the day and has attracted a quality field, but I think that the obvious bet is the best bet here. I hope I will show you why not to look elsewhere in this race.

4.30 Ayr- Look Busy, Win and Place (NAP)

Look Busy (4.30) makes the long trip to Ayr, where she has a 100 percent record having scored twice at the track previously. This is a tough and consistent filly who goes on any ground and always runs a solid race. Her best trip is five furlongs, with all her 10 career wins coming over the minimum trip. Her career strike rate is an impressive 35 percent but over five furlongs it is an amazing 50 percent, which include several listed as well as a group three and a group two victory which she achieved by landing the Temple Stakes at Haydock in May.

The point here is that Look Busy is a top class filly and although she will have to concede weight to all of her rivals she is dropping back in to a handicap and may just be too quick for her rivals. With Slade O’Hara, her regular jockey, claiming five pounds she is not too badly weighted and looks a good thing for at least a place.

        Back to Lay…

A fast pace is assured and one to back to lay is Canadian Danehill (4.30) who will trade shorter in running as he hits the front. I will be investing in Look Busy as I simply cannot see her being out of the frame.

        6.50 Windsor- Slip, Win

The rest of the day is nowhere near as strong but I think Jim Boyle’s horses are worth following at the moment, with the stable coming back after a quiet spell. I will therefore have a small bet on Slip (6.50) at Windsor who won a similar event at Lingfield last time and can repeat the dose tonight.

I really am looking forward to my Monday racing and will enjoy it even more if Look

        Saturday’s Horseracing Tips…18th JulyThe

High Standing- 100% over 6 furlongs

High Standing- 100% over 6 furlongs

It’s been a good week, but Saturday is where the real action is with Newbury and Newmarket offering the best racing action. The big race is the Super Sprint, a race in which I have found the winner for the past two years and will now look to land the hat-trick.

There is certainly plenty of racing to get stuck in to, no fewer than four afternoon meetings and two evening cards. We will focus on the best of the action on Saturday.

2.20 Newbury- High Standing, Win (Nap)

High Standing (2.20) horse has a 100% record over 6 furlongs, boasting the Wokingham at Royal Ascot amongst his victories. Now in the care of William Haggas he has won three times for his new trainer and is improving hand over fist. Ryan Moore gave the four year-old a great ride at Ascot and retains the ride in this group three company.

Though stepping up in class I would be surprised if there were not further improvement to come and I honestly can not see him being beaten. This could be a top class performer over six furlongs and the Newbury going should be perfect for him. This is a very solid bet and is awarded NAP status.

        3.55 Newbury- Covert Ambition, Win

Frankie Dettori takes the ride aboard Godolphin’s lightly raced four year-old Singspiel colt who reopposes Tranquil Tiger, on equal terms, after getting his measure last time at Sandown. Covert Ambition (3.55) should be able to make it three wins from only four career starts for a stable that is now is full flight and firing in the winners with regularity.

2.35 Newmarket – Flame of Gibraltar, Win

Henry Cecil is one of the best ever trainers of fillies and though not one of the best he has ever trained Flame of Gibraltar (2.35) is talented and progressive which was illustrated by her second in the Ribblesdale. The three year-old gets a handy weight allowance and Barhiba has to concede 19 pounds, a tall order and probably beyond her. This listed contest is a drop in class for the daughter of Rock of Gibraltar, a race she ought to win.

The Super Sprint- I will leave that to the Professor today!

        Friday’s Horseracing Betting Tips….17th July

Some good racing takes place on Friday with six interesting UK meetings, the best of which is at Newbury and I really like one in the listed two year-old contest.

        flatfieldsideshot513_largeimage_2

        3.10 Newbury, Walkingonthemoon, Win

Walkingonthemoon (3.10) hails from the Tom Dascomble stable who has very quickly established itself as a top outfit with youngsters.Eight runners go to post but Dascombe’s colt has the best form in the book, certainly last time’s second in the Woodcote Stakes is decent. A neck second to Corporal Maddox looks good enough to win here but there could be a couple of improvers in the field to give Walkingonthemoon a good race. I would suggest that we should be on to a solid bet with our selection though. Back Walkingonthemoon to win is my advice.

        4.55 Newbury, Ashram, Win

I am very keen Godolphin’s Ashram (4.55) in this conditions event. He takes a class drop, having run well in a group three contest (Jersey Stakes) at Royal Ascot last time. A reproduction of that third place effort should see Frankie Dettori bring him home in front and confirm his official rating as the best horse in the field. The stable are certainly in form with 1o winners in the last 14 days and we should take full advantage of that momentum with Ashram.

4.30 Nottingham, Phoenix Enforcer, Win (NAP)

This is a poor race even for a seller and on official ratings George Baker’s Phoenix Enforcer (4.30) has well over a stone in hand. If this filly can’t get her head in front here then it is hard to imagine her ever having a better opportunity. I am not sure what sort of price we will get, but it should prove to be value. I appreciate that this is a seller but the form book tells us that this horse really must win.

9.00 Hamilton, The Last Alzao, Win

A double penalty to carry but this progressive filly is one to follow until she gets beaten. Richard Fahey has already completed a hat-trick of wins with The Last Alzao (9.00) and has booked useful five pounds claimer to negate some of the extra weight. The stable are closing in on the century of winners for the season and it looks like they will be one closer after this handicap event.

        In Summary…Friday’s Best Bets…

        3.10 Newbury, Walkingonthemoon, Win

        4.55 Newbury, Ashram, Win

4.30 Nottingham, Phoenix Enforcer, Win (NAP)

9.00 Hamilton, The Last Alzao, Win

        Tuesday’s Horseracing Tips…14th July

There is no huge bets to be struck again on Tuesday, but the moderate cards offer a few interesting angles…

        74098062JH015_Chester

        Beverley…

My local track is Beverley and I will be there armed with a couple of fancies, the first of which is Northern Flyer (3.45) who showed he is still on a competitive mark when going down a head at Catterick. John Quinn has found a great young claimer in Jamie Kyne who takes the ride and should win on this horse who won well at Musselburgh and is fully expected to make in two in three today.

The bet of the day for me is Yonder (4.15) who can complete a hat-trick of the Hughie Morrison stable. I will also lay Monte Platino (4.15) who  hails from a stable who do not have many winners and has gone up five pounds in the handicap, for winning an amateur race last time where the rider took off five, and does not look anywhere near the calibre of Yonder. That is my view, which may leave me with egg on my face, but I am confident of this lay!

        Southwell…

Swiss Art (7.40) is the best on the card for Ruth Carr, who is doing very well this season. On it’s second start for the yard Swiss Art showed improvement and in a moderate race can follow up with another victory.

        Yarmouth…

Starstruck Peter (8.40) is another who is massively improved for Jim Best. I took him on last time and knew my fate early on. A penalty will not stop this one and he should land the hat-trick, this time with my money on him, not against him.

Short and sweet but we should be amongst the winners on Tuesday…

        Tuesdays Bets;
        3.45 Beverley- Northern Flyer, win
        4.15 Beverley- Yonder, win
        7.40 Southwell- Swiss Art, win

        8.50 Yarmouth- Starstruck Peter, win

        Lay..
        4.15 Beverley- Monte Platino
