Get The Best Bets for Saturday- Call 0844 811 2811* Now

I can’t believe that there will be early morning inspections at Cheltenham and Doncaster, the prospect of losing either or indeed both of these cards is very worrying. The quality at both venues is really high particularly at Cheltenham.

There may be no Denman but Festivals trial day at Cheltenham looks excellent with so many betting opportunities. I will look to take on Madison Du Berlias who is 0 from 6 at the track.

Here are a few good bets for Saturday;

12:55 Cheltenham, Pistolet Noir- Win. This should kick off the day with a winner but it won’t be any sort of value. Making his debut for Paul Nicholls for powerful connection this is one horse who could strongly figure in the Triumph Hurdle market and will almost certainly be cut for that if as expected he wins this well. Ruby Walsh for Paul Nicholls, could set the theme for 2010 as in 2009 at the track.

Paul Nicholls could have a good day at Cheltenham

2:35 Cheltenham, Madison Du Berlais- Lay. Yes a Lay! Clearly he is the best horse in the race, the Argento Chase, but his stats at Cheltenham are woeful. He also had a very hard race last time when [a distant] second to Kauto Star in the King George. I also have a hatred of this horse, although not his fault, when he beat Denman at Kempton Scudamore turned round and made a gesture to Ruby Walsh, Denman was clearly below par that day and was delighted to see him stuff Madison Du Berlias out of site in the Gold Cup. Previous winners Joe Lively and Knowhere are great to have on side but I really like the prospects of Inchidaly Rock. It all adds up to a lay, particularly at the track at these prices.

3:10 Cheltenham, General Miller- Win. I think this is a really good horse for the future. I love to see McCoy riding for Nicky Henderson, particularly at Cheltenham. This is his toughest test but would be surprised if he was not up to it. The price will be interesting, particularly if the Nicholls / Walsh bandwagon is powering ahead.

3:40 Cheltenham, Lie Forrit- Win (NAP). This is a great horse from a small stable. He steps up in grade but has looked top class, winning four out of five and unseating when looking the winner in the other of those runs. This is the race where we will find out if he can take the step in to the premier league, so to speak. I really think he can, he certainly travels powerfully and will be one to trade at a shorter price in running. I have always liked Fair Along who will travel well in front (and trade shorter in play) and make it a strong gallop. Tidal Bay is interesting, on his old form he would win well but he doesn’t look the horse of old. Lie Forrit could prove to be better than these. (NAP).
At Doncaster…

1:45 Doncaster, Mad Max- Win. This is a horse I really like and now he is over fences he could be very very good. He is a huge horse who jumps well. It is interesting that Barry Geraghty is at Doncaster rather than Cheltenham and I hope Mad Max played at part in that decision. He should win and any sort of price would be worth taking if you consider it value.

4:00 Doncaster, Alegralil- Win and Place. This is a horse who has not yet been tested and could be much better than her rating suggests. At Catterick last time she was devastating and I would be interested in taking a chance at a decent price for a stable very much in form.

What a weekend, I will be having some serious bets this weekend with so many good events taking place. Of course horseracing is my first love and it is the Arc at Longchamp on Sunday. Paddy Power have given us a charity bet on the Arc, and I am confident with Sea The Stars, so fingers crossed. Here are the tips we gave out on Suntalk with Jon Gaunt on Friday for the weekend ahead. Make sure you check out our full preview of the days racing here at RacingDiary.co.uk.

Not as many bets on Wednesday as yesterday for me, but I have two very strong selections on the flat and over the jumps. It’s what I call a bread and butter day, as far as betting is concerned, but at Catterick I think we will see a pretty decent horse who will go on to better things.

Looking for Winners on Wednesday...

On The Flat…

Mister Angry (2.30) runs in what is a very good race, certainly for Catterick, and will leave backers anything but if reproducing his performance at Wolverhampton. He handed out a lesson in winning to his opponents, showing them total distain and trotting up by seven lengths, improving from his racecourse debut. I think we will see yet more improvement from Mark Johnston’s son of Cape Cross who could progress to be a very decent horse indeed. I rate that performance last time very highly and will be backing Mister Angry to make me Mister Happy today. Mister Angry is the Racing Diary NAP on Wednesday.

Over Jumps…

Over the jumps I was on Rhinestone Ruby (8.10) last time when she was denied by a nose over two and a half miles. She drops down in trip with Robert Thornton taking over from Richard Johnson in a race that will take little winning. With the exception of McCoy’s mount I would struggle to make any sort of case for her opponents in this Worcester handicap. She has a good turn of foot and should be suited to the trip, certainly her trainer has booked a top jockey to get the job done. I rate Rhinestone Ruby as a good bet, but would say Mister Angry is the best bet off the day.

Good Luck.

Wednesday’s Bets Bets

We are relying on fillies at Newmarket….

What a great card at Newmarket, a good card by any standards and outstanding for a Wednesday. We saved our ammunition for today and hopefully we will be hitting the targets with some precision selections.

Rainbow View one to Lay against Goldikova

The highlight is the group one Falmouth Stakes and if at her best Goldikova (3.10) would win this in a canter. The interesting angle is Rainbow View who is getting nine pounds in weight for age allowances but from what we have seen so far this year I can not see her winning this. Looking at the early prices Goldikova is huge value based on her form, if you can forgive her that last run.

Goldikova’s form is exceptional, with her penultimate run being a win in The Breeders Cup Mile at Santa Anita. In the context of this race she is way ahead and official ratings substantiate that quite decisively. The stable are not in the best of form but she has bags of class and at that price I will be a significant backer of a world class filly. I would rate Spacious as the main danger to Goldikova and I advise you to lay Rainbow View.

Goldikova’s trainer Freedie Head says;
“I am very confident. On form she looks to be the best horse, so I expect her to win and win well,”

Watch the Breeder’s Cup Mile at Santa Anita

This is class that should see her home at Newmarket.

The Cherry Hinton is another race for fillies, this time two year-olds, which looks a match between Royal Ascot winner Habaayib and Queen Mary second Misheer (2.35). The Queen Mary was a better race than the Albany Stakes and was decisively won by Jealous Again, who was simply too good for the rest. I think that Misheer will be suited by the step up in trip and will have too much speed for the field. Neil Callan is an excellent jockey who will relish this opportunity to show his talents at the highest level. Misheer is the best value bet of the day, at almost 5-1 there is each-way value to be had.

At a Decent Price….

At a decent price Shamwari Lodge (2.00) looks to have outstanding claims for Ryan Moore and Richard Hannon. She is an improving filly who was just edged out at Epsom last time and drops back to six furlongs where she will be able to put her speed to good use. I think she may be well treated and can land this valuable prize and a nice return for backers.

Elsewhere…

Our Uttoxeter bets were called off due to heavy rain but we have an excellent McCoy bet at Worcester. Hope Road (7.40) has everything in its favour. The excellent trainer teams up with the best jockey of all time! Following up on a good win last time out, Hope Road is an excellent bet and can win for us, rain or no rain.

Both colts prevailed on their last starts, but missed expected engagements at the Royal Meeting and will line-up on Saturday for the first time since May. William Haggas will saddle top-weight Mutajaad who finished just 11th in last year’s renewal after being sent off favourite.

Other notable entries include Aqwaal – who rates alongside another Sir Michael Stoute runner – Desert Creek, and Godolphin’s Moonquake, as 8-1 second-favourites.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’Saturday’s John Smith’s Cup looks set to be a fascinating contest, with many of the leading contenders appearing big-handicap contenders in their previous starts. The draw over this trip at York can often prove a crucial consideration, so all eyes will be on the stall allocations at the 48-hour stage.’’

SEA THE STARS BACKED FOR UNBEATEN ’09 RUN!

After 24-hours of support, William Hill have been forced to adjust their odds on Sea the Stars continuing his unbeaten 2009 run through till the end of the year.

Breaking News: THE Juddmonte International at York on August 18 rather than the Betfair-sponsored King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes would appear to be the more likely target for triple Group 1 winner Sea The Stars following his victory in the Coral-Eclipse Stakes on Saturday.

3-1 to Remain Unbeaten in 09

Hills offered 5-1 about the special bet following Sea the Stars’s eclipse win yesterday, but after support at their opening price, and a follow-up at 4-1, John Oxx’s colt is now a 3-1 chance to triumph in his remaining races this season.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’Sea the Stars has beaten every runner that has stood before him so far this season, including a win against the older generation in yesterday’s Eclipse. Punters have weighed-in for him to remain unbeaten this season, and clearly believe he is peerless in the current era.’’

Sea the Stars to remain unbeaten throughout 2009 (must run once): 3-1 from 5-1

Sea The Stars fine ahead of Eclipse

Sea The Stars, Coral-Eclipse, Saturday

For Racing Diary reader who are on at 11-10, John Oxx’s words will be like music to their ears!

SEA THE STARS is dropping back to 10 furlongs for Saturday’s Coral Eclipse Stakes at Sandown but despite that his trainer John Oxx yesterday stressed his belief that the Epsom Derby winner has proved himself over a mile and a mile and a half and dismissed suggestions otherwise as “spin” from Coolmore Stud.

The Curragh trainer stated his happiness about Sea The Stars’s stamina in an interview yesterday and also said that a faster pace at Epsom last month would have suited his dual-Classic winning colt better. There was widespread criticism of the tactics employed by Aidan O’Brien’s team at Epsom where the runner-up Fame And Glory was generally regarded as being unsuited to a lack-lustre early tempo. The Montjeu colt impressively won last Sunday’s Irish Derby off a much stronger pace.

Sea The Stars missed the Curragh Derby due to ground conditions and now faces older horses for the first time over the shorter Eclipse distance. However Oxx said yesterday:

“He was a bit keen early on (at Epsom) and we would have preferred a faster pace ourselves. There’s a lot of Coolmore spin going around: they’re trying to alter the picture as best they can. That’s just their style and we all know about that! The result is there and he stays the trip well enough.”

Oxx also stressed yesterday the value of a colt proving his versatility and having won at a mile and a mile and a half, Sea The Stars will now attempt a Group hat-trick at different distances this weekend.

It should be a good distance for him, who knows what his best distance is yet. We will try him and see how he goes. It’s always nice to win top races over a variety of distances. Winning at a mile and a quarter would be another feather in his cap. It’s important to prove a horse’s versatility, Oxx isn’t underestimating the task facing Sea The Stars against the likes of Conduit and Rip Van Winkle on Saturday and said the result will be influential in deciding the rest of his colt’s 2009 campaign. Another race gives us more information. He has only had five races so every time he runs we learn a little more. It could point us in a certain direction, it looks like there will be a couple of pacemakers in the race so it will be a nice pace I hope. The usual blend of speed, stamina and class will be required.

Ground conditions are currently quick at Sandown but showers for the area are forecast over the next couple of days. However, Oxx doesn’t anticipate a late withdrawal similar to last weekend at the Curragh.

It’s not the same situation. It’s pretty fast at Sandown at the minute. At the moment it is very hot and they could get a thundery shower I suppose. We will monitor it but it’s not the same situation as last week when there was a lot of moisture in the ground to begin with.

Can Rip Van Winkle Bat Sea The Stars Over 1m 2f…

Jimmy Fortune cleary thinks so, but we say he has no chance, here’s Jimmy view…

Jimmy Fortune can hardly wait to get the leg up on Aidan O’Brien’s Rip Van Winkle in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown on Saturday. Fortune has come in for the ride on the Galileo colt with Ballydoyle stable jockey Johnny Murtagh on the sidelines due to suspension. The three-year-old has so far finished fourth in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and in the Derby at Epsom, both of which were won by Sea The Stars. Fortune admits John Oxx’s charge is the one to beat again at the weekend but he has certainly not given up hope of turning the form around. Fortune told At The Races;

“He’s a very nice horse and for Johnny to ride him in the Derby, he has obviously being doing everything right at home so I’m very happy to get the ride. To win a Guineas and then go on and win a Derby, Sea The Stars is obviously a high-class horse and he’s the one we’ll all have to beat. Conduit is also a solid horse who has been there in these Group One races and done it. He handles the track and he is going to be there. It looks a three-horse race but you can not write off Luca Cumani’s horse (Cima De Triomphe). The trip could be ideal for us as he travelled well in the Derby and there were stamina doubts going in there, so you would have thought this was his trip. I’ll speak to Aidan and see what he wants me to do and obviously I’ll speak to Johnny and find out everything I can about the horse. Hopefully we’ll get it right on the day. We haven’t got that much to find with Sea The Stars, it’s going to be a great race and I’m looking forward to it.”

Joining Rip Van Winkle from Ballydoyle are Malibu Bay and Set Sail, while St Leger and Breeders’ Cup Turf hero Conduit spearheads the older generation, with stable companion Lang Shining also taking his chance. Henry Cecil’s Twice Over, Cima De Triomphe, Steele Tango and Jukebox Jury complete the stellar line-up. Mike De Kock’s Archipenko was not declared after suffering a swollen fetlock.

Tazeez, Monitor Closely and Westphalia were the other withdrawals at the final declaration stage, meaning the sponsors have decided to cut Sea The Stars to 4-6 from 4-5 for the historic contest. Coral spokesman Simon Clare feels he could be even shorter come post time.

Bit of a disaster yesterday, not least at Worcester which ended in farce because of a lack of available water, at a course that spent month submerged by flood water, you have to laugh! That said if horse’s welfare was in question then the right decision was made and everyone lives to fight another day. Is’s a big weekend ahead with the Eclipse and the Steward’s Cup to look forward to.

Over Jumps…

I am back on the McCoy bandwagon again today, which makes its way to Perth for three rides. His first is at 2.20 where he teams up with Pengana who has by far the best form and should win with the minimum of fuss at a price that reflects that scenario. However, Aggies Lad (2.50) is a much more sporting price and is one I will be backing to follow up on a decisive and impressive win over fences at Killarney. Tony Martin likes a gamble, but also knows how to handle a decent horse and really places his horses well. The booking of McCoy is a statement of intent that cannot be ignored. McCoy could complete a treble, and a double for Martin, with Another Ambition (4.20), but this looks a trappy race that I am going to sidestep.

On the Flat…

This evening, on the flat, my best bet of the day is a bit shorter than I had hoped but should provide a straightforward win. Stateside (9.20) hails from the excellent Richard Fahey yard and should defy a six pounds penalty to land the hat-trick. Stateside will be running off higher marks in the near future and this is not a great race so it’s time to make hay, or indeed money, whilst the sun shines.
