Sandown - where we should have a winner!

6:05 Sandown, Dream Win, Win. With no Marjury Daw in the field this is a much easier task for Brian Ellison’s Dream Win. This is also an apprentice race, which usually rings alarm bells, but Dale Swift is an excellent jockey and I have no worries with him aboard. Dream Win win last time at Wolves and I think he will do so again back on turf and make the long trip to the Esher track worth it. Koo’s Racing Club is doing very well this season and I suspect they may notch up another here!

8:15 Sandown, Squall, Win. Jeremy Noseda is one of the best trainers in the business. Squall makes his handicap debut after winning a Ripon maiden from a mark of 77 here tonight. That is unlikely to be a mark that stops him being very competitive and I suspect he will greatly improve for in time. He may prove to be very well handicapped. I advise watching the market. This is my bet of the day and with Frankie Dettori booked we may be on to something good!

8:50 Sandown, Tilos Gem, Win. Mark Johnston usually has a winner here and Tilos Gem could be another of his stayers to land the money. This fella is in no way a stable star , indeed he has not won for 12 months, one win from 17 races, but he can go one better I reckon here tonight.

5:15 Yarmouth Thoughtsofstardom, Win. A low grade affair this, but still quite competitive. I side with Thoughtsofstardom who had every chance of winning but was mowed down in the closing stages last time out here. Frankie Dettori is back on board, looking for revenge and although he lost to Greek Secret earlier in the month the turn-around in the weights will put them much closer together and Phil McEntee’s horse looks the one to side with. It is not a great day, but this look a good bet.

There really isn’t much else to get excited about. The weather looks set fair and with plenty to come this week, including the King George on Saturday, it looks like Tuesday is a good day to be outdoors.

3:50 Ffos Las, Lady Eclair, Win (NAP). She just keeps on winning Lady Eclair! I love this filly. Lady Eclair can continue the terrific run of the Mark Johnston stable who can do no wrong at present. He had a big race handicap double at Newmarket with St Moritz and Sea Lord (Amy Ryan), he also won the Bahrain Trophy with Corsica who was give a great ride by Frankie Dettori. Lady Eclair has a pretty similar profile to Corsica in that she has been on the go a very long time but there seems to be no sign of her progression stopping. Mark Johnston had her entered in a Listed race at Leopardstown which gives a good deal of confidence that she is considered good enough to win another handicap off her current rating.

2:50 Ffos Las, Cockney, Win. Before Lady Eclair the Mark Johnston team should land a winner with Cockney who has gone close three times. In this five runner field Cockney must have a great chance of adding a one to his three two’s by his name. As Said above the Johnston yard is flying and this should be another winner in the familiar green and red and colours. Joe Fanning is in great form too so in a tight race, Cockney should win!

Free Horseracing Tips

4:00 Pontefract, Pipalong Stakes, Tropical Paradise, Win. This is a listed race for fillies and she is the only horse with a rating of 100 or more, rated 102 , she should take all the beating. She won a Goodwood handicap from a mark of 98, suggesting she is worthy of her mark, last time out. This is not a great listed race, but in terms of today’s racing it is by far the best race on offer all day. Just Lillie would be the one to trouble the selection but really Tropical Paradise should win this.

The only other bet would be in the 2:30 at Pontefract…

2:30 Pontefract, Majestic Myles, Win. He lived up to his reputation at Redcar last time and looks capable of defying a penalty today, while Loves Theme and Orientalist are others to consider. The Richard Fahey-trained pick stayed on strongly to win over this trip at that much flatter track, suggesting that this gradual climb up to the line may suit ideally. With the ground to suit and plenty of potential we will side with the colt to follow-up.

July Cup Betting….

Frankie Dettori has been confirmed as the jockey for Fleeting Spirit in Friday’s Darley July Cup at Newmarket. Speculation had been mounting as to who would partner Jeremy Noseda’s flying filly with Tom Queally, who rode her to victory last year, and champion jockey Ryan Moore also in the mix.

The big race at Newmarket on Wednesday is the Falmouth Stakes….

Ryan Moore just shades favouritism in the race to be top jockey at Royal Ascot with totesport and the Wigan-based firm make him 8/11 to take the crown. July Cup winner Fleeting Spirit has been cut to 13/2 (from 8/1) by totesport after a field of 24 was declared for Saturday’s Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The champion jockey drew a blank on the third day of the Royal meeting but still heads the table due to the number of placed horses he has ridden. Frankie Dettori is next in the market at 11/4 after his victory on Hibaayeb in the Ribblesdale Stakes took his tally to two for the meeting.

‘We’ve seen some thrilling finishes at Royal Ascot already this week but the race to be top jockey could end up being just as close with Ryan Moore, Richard Hughes and Frankie Dettori all sitting pretty with two wins apiece,’ said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

The bookmakers fought back on the third day of Royal Ascot after Rite Of Passage sunk a huge gamble on Ask in the Ascot Gold Cup when winning at 20/1.

‘Although the punters had a result in the Hampton Court Stakes courtesy of Afsare, Rite Of Passage’s victory in the Ascot Gold Cup ensured that day three of the Royal meeting belonged to the bookies,’ said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

The biggest flat race in the world is the Investec Derby which was won last year by the amazing Sea The Stars. In 2010 there are twelve colts bidding to land the first prize of a mere £771,000. I think Frankie Dettori will win the Derby aboard Rewilding.

The betting shows that Jan Vermeer, the mount of Johnny Murtagh is the13/8 favourite, making him a very short price to land the prize.  At the prices though I like the chances of Rewilding, trained by Mamood Alzarooni and ridden by Frankie Dettori, who has only won the Investec Derby once before in 2007.

At Goodwood in the Cocked Hat Stakes Rewilding ran really well, pulling away over a mile and three, suggesting that he will get every yard of the extra furlong at Epsom. Supplemented at a cost of £45,000 by Godolphin I think he has a great chance. Jan Vermeer could be the real deal, but will need to step up on what we have seen so far. I would like to see Henry Cecil win the Derby again but I was highly impressed with Rewilding. There could be much more in the Rewilding Tank so at 15/2 I think he is a great each-way price.

I know some people will be unhappy with this view but should Frankie Dettori win the Derby it will be good for headlines and ultimately for Racing. He is one of only two personalities widely known outside racing. The other been Big John McCrirck. However it is all about the horse and Rewilding is the serious pick for the Investec Derby at 13/2.

Frankie Dettori last won the Derby in 2007 on Authorized. He has only ever won one Derby. Though 13/2 Rewilding could, in my view give Frankie Dettori a derby victory, in the Godolphin blue, that would be a very emotional victory for the Italian.

1:40 Epsom Verdant. Can you give another chance to Verdant who bombed last time.  I have seen Sir Michael Stout horses run shockers and then come back and do very well.

I remember Harbinger at York last year, shocking, finished last, but has come back to prove what a great horse he really is. So I am going to give Verdant the nod after his flop last time at Newbury. We should get a decent price.

2:10 Epsom (Woodcote Stakes) Casual Glimpse. This is not easy, but when in doubt in a two year old race go with The Richards, Hannon and Hughes.  They have some top quality two year-olds and have chosen to run Casual Glimpse who looked very good when winning first time out. I won’t get too involved but this is a tried and tested method, back Hannon two year-olds.

3:15 Epsom (Dash) Fathom Five. Last time out Chris Wall’s six year-old won over course and distance, which at Epsom is vitally important. In fact he has won twice at Epsom and last year did so from a mark of 93, today he runs off 94. Alan Munro, in my view, rode a brilliant race last time out and I am very keen on the chances of Fathom Five here, certainly at an each-way price. There is little between the field, margins are small, but Fathom Five is one I really like today!

4:00 Epsom (Investec Derby) Rewilding, each-way. I think this could be Frankie’s year. Rewilding ran really well at Goodwood over 1m 3f, pulling away suggesting that the extra furlong would suit him well. Jan Vermeer has been heavily backed but I am looking for some value here and Rewilding fits the bill. OK so £45,000 is not a huge sum to connections but he has been supplemented for the Derby.

Free Horseracing Tips for Wednesday

Wednesday is not bad, particularly at Nottingham it has to be said where there are a couple of decent races. Here are your Free Horseracing Tips for Wednesday 2 June.  I will be focusing on the meeting at Nottingham.

3:45 Nottingham Forjatt can continue the excellent form of the Michael Jarvis stable who boasts a near 30% strike rate for the season. Likely to be no price at all, particularly with Dettori in the saddle, but she could turn out to be decent and one to watch for bigger prizes ahead. Small field means no price. Shame.

4:50 Nottingham Rio De La Plata could provide a welcome winner for Godolphin and Bin Suroor who has saddled 20 runners in the last two weeks and has failed to win any of those races. Rated 114, Rio De La Plata  should have no trouble beating this field if he can run to within a few pounds of that rating. He was a Group One performer but this is a drop in grade, he really should do the business but the stable form is a worry. Surely he should win this with the assistance of Frankie Dettori in the saddle.

5:25 Nottingham Field Day looks a very exciting filly. Brian Meehan’s filly won very nicely on her debut last season and is bred to be a nice sort. The stable’s débutantes always come on for a first run, so one that wins first time up is always noteworthy. The trip of a mile will suit and I imagine the mark of 85 is of concern to connections.  However, the maiden she won has thrown up plenty of winners and she is definitely one to watch and one to back here.

Transferred from Andre Fabre to Sheikh Mohammed’s second British trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni two weeks ago, the Tiger Hill colt needs supplementing at a cost of £75,000 for the Classic and is just 10-1 with Coral and Ladbrokes. The even-money favourite for his British debut, Rewilding travelled conservatively for Dettori and settled matters when kicking on over a furlong out.

Stan James introduced the listed Goodwood winner Rewilding into their Derby betting at 10/1 following colts impressive success. He will need supplementing for the race but connections suggest that is the plan for the Godolphin trained colt who was in the care of Andre Fabre for his previous runs in France.

Lady Brookie can scorch a trail to glory in the Trustmark Design And Print Maiden Stakes at Ffos Las. Trained by Bill Turner, whose juveniles consistently excel at this time of year, this Makbul filly looks to have a blindingly bright future.

Dettori can win on Tuesday

Sole cause for optimism, of course, can be derived from her racing bow at Doncaster, where she finished a superb second in the Brocklesby. Jack Dean’s mount attempted to do it the hard way, from the head of affairs and from a low draw, and only went down fighting by a head, staying on resolutely to suggest six furlongs might be the way forward later this year.

That performance was obviously anything but a disgrace, especially as the winner, Chiswick Bey, could be special.

With Lady Brookie again in receipt of a nice chunk of weight from the colts – not to mention the fact she is already proven on soft ground – Turner’s speedball rates a confident selection to go one place better than on her debut.

The Hermitage is an absorbing aspirant bidding for top honours in the Burns Pet Nutrition Handicap.

Things have not really gone to plan for Mark Johnston’s filly since she finished second in Beverley’s Hilary Needler – although she was admittedly up against it at Royal Ascot and in the Redcar Two-Year-Old Trophy.

Despite failing to pull up many trees on her two subsequent starts since Beverley, it is a shade surprising to see her handed a rating of just 80.

To that end, there seems plenty of room for manoeuvre off her current perch.

She should therefore run with a great deal of promise in this fairly average contest – especially under Frankie Dettori’s expert supervision.

The three-year-old is one of just three animals in the field who have seen a racecourse this year – a fact which cannot be undervalued.

His performance at Lingfield last month was also pretty impressive as he closed to within a head of Mount Juliet over seven furlongs.

Amanda Perrett’s decision to step him up to a mile for the first time in his career seems logical, while a 4lb rise is unlikely to stunt expected progress.



King Fontaine can rule at Wetherby.

The Malcolm Jefferson-trained gelding has already enjoyed a profitable campaign, and can carry on the good work in the wetherbyracing.co.uk Novices’ Chase.

Twice successful over hurdles late last year, King Fontaine has acclimatised well to his new fencing career.

After an undistinguished start at Catterick, where he was pulled up, Jefferson’s charge has since finished in the money at Bangor and Carlisle.

His most recent effort in Cumbria was particularly satisfying as he got much closer to the decent Award Winner than at Bangor to suggest clear improvement.

King Fontaine should be in his element competing at the demanding Yorkshire circuit and looks to have conditions made to measure.
