England 3/1 to win all Euro qualifiers

Rio Ferdinand has been confirmed as England’s captain for the Euro 2012 qualifier with Montenegro at Wembley on Tuesday evening. Returning Rio Ferdinand is 6/4 with William Hill to start as skipper for the remainder of England‘s Euro 2012 Qualifying matches. (1/2 not to).

The Manchester United defender was named as Fabio Capello’s skipper after John Terry was sacked following allegations about his private life. The 31-year-old Ferdinand has worn the armband for only two of the 10 subsequent internationals because of injury problems. He missed the World Cup campaign with knee ligament damage sustained during England’s first training session in South Africa. Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has worn the armband in Ferdinand’s absence and earned praise from Capello for the way he has handled the role.

But the Italian has reverted to his original appointment with Ferdinand leading out the side for the first time since the friendly international with Japan in Graz in late May.

‘Fabio clearly has no doubts that if he is fit, Rio takes the armband, but with his patchy season so far due to injury there must be a chance that he may miss out again between now and the final qualifying game’ said Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe.

With Wayne Rooney starting the match, Hills offer 4/7 that he will still be on the pitch when the final whistle blows – and 5/4 that he will not. ‘Rooney is another whose fitness has to be taken on trust and it would be no surprise to see him taken off if he looks off the pace, or, perhaps, if the game is well won some time before the end’ added Sharpe.
Hills offer 3/10 that Joe Hart will start the rest of the games in goal.

Fabio Capello To Quit, after Euro 2012

The news broke last night that England manager Fabio Capello will quit his post after Euro 2012. After four years in the job by that time he will have been paid around £24 million and 66 years old, it isn’t about time to retire.

Fabio Capello says he wants to enjoy his life as a pensioner, and who can blame him. There is no doubt that he is a very good football manager, England have looked very good in their qualification campaigns for both the World Cup and the opening rounds of the Euro 2012 tournament.

I hope that he is motivated to set the record straight about his ability, in a major football tournament at Euro 2012 following what can only be described as a disaster in the World Cup in South Africa. As more revelations emerge in the tabloids it is clear that there were issues, tensions and problems in the camp that no manager could have worked around so I think we have to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Fabio Capello could have easily walked away after the World Cup with a few harsh words for the young dumb (and full of ***) England stars, but he didn’t despite calls from people like me to jump on the first plane back to his tax haven.

So the question is now can England win Euro 2012? For my money they are not in the same league as Spain or Holland for that matter, Germany will be even tougher to beat in two years time but certainly England should make a better fist of it next time round.

As is the English way we do not mind failure as long as it is glorious failure. The bookmakers make England and 9 to one shot generally which on balance is probably a fair price but I would have to use someone else’s money if I was honest to back England.

They represent absolutely no value with the tournament just under two years away but Spain are a team that only a fool at this stage would oppose. Capello has a mountain to climb to compete with the world champions. The good news though is he is up for the challenge which will make it an interesting couple years for the three Lions.

England‘s next match is against Montenegro next month at Wembley. Until then England sit proudly at the top of their qualifying group having played two and won two with a goal difference of seven for and only one against.

England Impress With Easy Swiss Win

England maintained their unbeaten start to their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign with a win over Switzerland in Basel on Wednesday evening. The three Lions beat Switzerland 3-1 to top the group with Wayne Rooney scoring and much-needed goal.

Carl Harris looks at the latest football betting news and the latest England betting odds after the first round of Euro 2012 qualification.

England went ahead through an early Wayne Rooney goal and seemed to be in control for much of the game. Theo Walcott unfortunately went off with an ankle injury and he went to hospital for an x-ray which will not please Arsene Wenger in the slightest.

The question has to be asked though ‘where was this England during the World Cup in South Africa?’, they look a completely different team which I think only proves that there were problems and tensions in the camp. Perhaps I was overcritical of the manager, he clearly knows what he’s doing but England were nothing short of a laughing stock in the World Cup; I do agree though with Capello insomuch as rather than dwelling on the past we must focus on the future.

So far so good then for England, to impressive wins maximum points and group leaders. The mood of the nation has improved but let’s not get carried away again and our hopes raised, just in case this England team turns out to be very good during qualification and not so good in the tournament itself. So what do the bookmakers make of England?

Stan James were counting the cost of Stephen McManus’s late late winner for Scotland against Liechenstein at Hampden last night in their Euro 2012 qualifier. We also cut England from 10s to 9s for Euro 2012 after an impressive win in Basel. Spain remain the 4/1 favs despite their 4-1 reverse against Argentina in a friendly.

Head of PR Charlie McCann: “Punters had the Scots in all their doubles, trebles and accas as many thought it was buying money. When Mario Frick scored just after half time that looked to have made it a decent night for the layers as Craig Levein’s side didn’t look as if they had one goal in them let alone two. Little did we know the referee was playing next goal the winner.”

WAYNE Rooney’s opening goal for England saw punters land a major coup according to Ladbrokes.

The bookies had been offering 9/2 for the United striker to open the scoring in Basle – and Rooney fans threw their support behind the under-fire hitman with hard cash to bash the bookies.

David Williams of Ladbrokes said: “Rooney’s opener was a sickener for us. Madame Fate was clearly on the side of the punters and Rooney. The script went against us big time.”

Rooney is now 6/4 to break Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time England goal-scoring record. England remain 8/1 to win the Euros in 2012 and are 1/14 to qualify from their group.

Scotland’s failure to beat Liechtenstein at Hampden Park was some relief to the bookies who had chalked up 1/12 about Craig Levein’s men cruising to victory.

Not To Qualify 6/1

Rooney To Break Bobby Charlton’s Goalscoring Record……….6/4

Switzerland v England Betting Preview

England will be boosted by a win, but surely a draw is a decent result in terms of Group G qualification

World Cup Betting

Wayne Rooney - England

England face Switzerland tonight amid more furore surrounding the not-so-private-lives of players (dont forget that there are injunctions in place preventing publication of details about other players!) but Friday’s 4-0 win against Bulgaria will have done much to quieten critics of Capello and a win tonight at  St Jakob Park, Basle will further quieten the critics.

However, a win against Switzerland who pulled off the shock result of this summer’s World Cup by beating Spain in their opening game, will be more difficult than many imagine, and realistically an away draw should be regarded as a “good-enough” result in the grand scheme of Group G qualification.

The problem England will have against Switzerland is to actually score. Managed by Ottmar Hitzfeld, formerly of Bayern Munich, the Swiss will be well drilled in midfield and defence, take few chances themselves in terms of committing players forward and will almost certainly have 10 men behind the ball for much of the game, since they haven’t won a home international for six games. England also have to overcome the latest in the long list of “unavailable” central defenders so expect Cahill, Upson or Lescott to replace the injured Dawson alongside Jagielka in the heart of the England defence but Jagielka impressed against Bulgaria and Joe Hart looked like he had been born to be England’s No 1.

In match odds betting, England have drifted overnight and are generally around 10/11 or just short of even money to win tonight against Switzerland; the draw is available at around 5/2 and Switzerland are 3/1 to win. In terms of “value”, it is difficult to see the Swiss winning, even with home advantage, but beyond the clear English favouritism, it is difficult to find value in less than even money. Switzerland’s last 10 games have resulted in in just one goal either way or a scoreless draw and Under 2.5 at 1.7 looks great value and Under 1.5 can be backed at 3.15.

Certainly we expect a low scoring game and waver between the frustrating and scoreless or an equally frustrating  0-1 England win so dutching for a correct score looks a useful option. You can dutch 0-0, 0-1, 1-1 and 0-2 for better than even money (2.09) and this is our bet of the day. Adding the 1-2 scoreline significantly reduces the odds to 1.73.

With goals difficult to come by, we would not look to name the first goalscorer, especially when Defoe and Rooney are so short, our suggestion is that if you want to bet on a goalscorer then look further down the field and think in terms of a player to score at anytime, maybe from a set play or a long distance effort. The obvious choices would be Gerrard or Milner at 3/1 and 13/2 respectively.

Switzerland v England Prediction

England to edge this 0-1 (6/1 on Betfair) though the Swiss may take some time to breakdown and a trade on the 0-0 scoreline could produce an easy profit.

To Score

We select Milner at 7.6 on Betfair

England v Switzerland Best Bet

Dutch 0-0, 0-1, 1-1 and 0-2 for better than even money (2.09) or back Under 2.5 at 1.78
