Denman Can Land a Third Hennessy on Super Saturday at Newbury

Free Horseracing Tips

By Carl Harris

The Hitman cleaned up last Saturday and he is back to mark your card for the big meeting at Newbury on Saturday, Carl Harris says get on Denman for Hennessy Gold Cup glory….

Denman has dominated the Hennessy Gold Cup (3:05 Newbury) with jaw dropping performances that have even reduced his trainer to tiers. I firmly believe he will do it again on Saturday and I have taken the early prices, Denman is most definately the best bet of the day.

Were it not for health problems Denman could have dominated the game, but despite his heart problems there is no doubting his bravery, I absolutely love Denman but sentiment aside, I think his class will show. Paul Nicholls has said he has never been happier with Denman, that will do for me. Get on Denman, with Gold Cup winning jockey Sam Thomas in the plate. Take the early price about Denman.

Cheltenham Gold Cup 2010

Denman won in 2008 and 2009

The Fighting Fifth as been moved from Newcastle to Newbury and now goes off at 12:25 and Champion Hurdler, Binocular makes his reappearance in a race he should win, at odds-on there is no value but a nice double with Denman may be a good investment. He has some decent opponents but lets be honest he should have a stone in hand and win on the steel.

McCoy should complete a double with Big Buck’s (2:30 Newbury) who is quite simply a star and should literally win in a canter here. Another short price but this will give you a nice Brucie Bonus on your winnings, he is an absolute good thing.  Absolute certainty!

Last week there was plenty of value with Stagecoach pearl winning at 7/2, today with all the abandonments choice is a bit thin on the ground, so Denman is my cornerstone today. I do like Corner Stone at Newbury in the last (3:40) who can land a hat-trick and I think is well handicaped over fences. Definately worth a bet I think.

Worth a watch, Denman winning the Hennessy Gold Cup last Year…..

Charlie McCann’s Weekend Betting Preview

Denman bids to make history by becoming the first horse to win the Hennessy Gold Cup three times this afternoon and the former Gold Cup winner is a worthy favourite despite being 8lb higher in the weights than last year when he beat stablemate What A Friend. This year Paul Nicholls has five in the race and StanJames.com bet 9/4 that one of the five hits the target.

Cheltenham Festival 2010

Denman - shock fall , hope for better

Arkle himself couldn’t win three Hennessy Gold Cups but only five of Denman’s 17 opponents are in the handicap. Sam Thomas who rode the ten-year-old to win his first Hennessy in 2007 and his Gold Cup success the following year regains the ride following the injury to Ruby Walsh who was last year’s successful pilot. His quick nimble jumping is likely to have many of his rivals in trouble from some way out, but I take a chance with Irish challenger Pandorama (3.05) despite the fact that he is 8lbs “wrong” in the weights.

The only horse to beat Pandorama to date is the brilliant but fragile Mikael D’Haguenet (more of him later) and the seven-year-old is unbeaten in three starts over fences including the Grade 1 Novice chase at Leopardstown when last seen back in December. The runner up on that occasion was the subsequent RSA Chase winner Weapon’s Amnesty so the form is rock solid and Pandorama gave every indication that he would be best served by going left-handed. His trainer has targeted a Grade 1 Chase over Xmas as his next possible objective and Noel Meade has never been one for calling geese swans. His lack of chasing experience is a cause for concern, but he will never carry the minimum weight again and he is given the vote in a wonderful renewal.

The StanJames.com Fighting Fifth Hurdle has been hastily rearranged from snowbound Newcastle who abandoned on Thursday afternoon. The forecast heavy ground at Newcastle wouldn’t have suited the Champion Hurdler Binocular (12. 25) but he should be more at home at Newbury where the good to soft ground should be ideal. Donald McCain’s Peddlers Cross won the Neptune Novices’ Hurdle at the Festival earlier in the year but he will have his work cut out against Binocular although the Champion is sure to come on for his seasonal reappearance.

On the flat at Kempton Man Of Iron was a winner at the Breeders’ Cup in Santa Anita last year but has largely disappointed since and preference is for the progressive Dreamspeed (3.50) who finished 3rd in a decent Group 3 at Newbury on turf last time. His ability to handle the artificial surface must be taken on trust but he is taken to score from Nideeb who landed a similar contest over 10f last week at Lingfield. If he stays he will be a threat to all.

Fairyhouse stage a cracking card tomorrow with no less than three Grade 1 contests including the Grade 1 Drinmore Novice chase which sees the reappearance of Mikael D’Haguenet (1.50) after a 576 day lay-off. I have always considered the horse a potential Gold Cup winner and if that is the case he must go close. He was beaten in a chase in France as a four-year-old so does have some experience of the larger obstacles.

Solwhit is the one to beat half an hour later but I am a massive Hurricane Fly fan and was staggered when the horse met with defeat on his seasonal reappearance (at the hands of Solwhit) last year. He showed when winning the Grade 1 Hurdle at Punchestown (gained his revenge on Solwhit albeit by only a neck) that he is a top class hurdler and, although he lacks the race fitness of the likely favourite, his class can prevail.

Zaidpour (1.15) was hugely impressive at Punchestown on his hurdle debut and he is taken to give Willie Mullins another Grade 1 success in the Royal Bond Novice Hurdle and land the weekend nap.

Mouse Morris’ charge was on Wednesday ruled out of the contest after a minor setback but Rare Bob is the only defector at the final declaration stage. Nicky Henderson has declared Barbers Shop who Andrew Tinkler will ride with Barry Geraghty switching to China Rock. The presence of Denman as top-weight means on seven horses are in the handicap proper on Saturday.

Sam Thomas as expected will ride Denman. He partnered him to victory in the 2008 Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

Nicky Henderson Confident For Binocular Return

Nicky Henderson expressed himself satisfied with the health of the Champion Hurdle favourite, Binocular, despite the five-year-old blowing hard at the end of a racecourse gallop yesterday morning.

“I’m happier with him now than I was last year, but that’s not to say something was obviously amiss back then,” the trainer said on Wednesday.

Binocular Can Land Fighting Fifth

“I wasn’t that confident going to Newcastle last year and I wouldn’t be again – it’s a very good race, as it should be, with Peddlers Cross and Starluck in there – but I do know Binocular is in very good form. Saturday is not the Champion Hurdle, it’s just the first step on the road to Cheltenham in March. My job is to make sure Binocular is fit and ready to defend his crown then but the stanjames.com Fighting Fifth Hurdle is the perfect place to start and provides a good route into the Christmas Hurdle,” he added.

A preview by Charlie McCann of Stan James

Sponsors Stan James have cut Peddlers Cross from 7/2 to 11/4 for Saturday’s Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle following support for the Donald McCain Festival winner and have eased Champion Hurdler Binocular from 5/6 to 10/11. The firm have also opened a book on whether this weekend’s big races at Newcastle and Newbury go ahead.

Head of PR Charlie McCann: ” The frost covers are due to go down at both tracks but will the weather allow the StanJames.com Fighting Fifth and Hennessy Gold Cup to go ahead? We suggest and hope yes and bet 4/11 the Fighting Fifth takes place at Newcastle on Saturday (2/1 no) and 4/9 the Hennessy takes place at Newbury on Saturday (13/8 no). Punters have latched on to Peddlers Cross for the Fighting Fifth and we have cut the Neptune Novices’ Hurdle winner to 11/4 from 7/2 in light of sustained support.”

Burton Port has been trimmed in the market for the Hennessy Gold Cup following the news that China Rock will miss the race and is now 7/1 (from 8/1) with totesport.

Over in Ireland, Alaivan ran out the comfortable winner of the Listed Fishery Land Hurdle and has been introduced into the market for the Champion Hurdle at 33/1.

Denman

Champion trainer Paul Nicholls has also left in Neptune Collonges, Taranis, The Tother One and Niche Market but it is Weird Al who is likely to be Denman’s main rival in the market and Ian Williams’ gelding is currently a 5/1 shot.

‘After big-race victories for Kauto Star and Imperial Commander in recent weeks, the spotlight is now on Denman as he aims to win the Hennessy for an historic third time and we’re bracing ourselves for a wholesale gamble similar to the one seen twelve months ago,’ said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

A total of seven horses have been entered for Saturday’s Stan James Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle and totesport make reigning Champion Hurdler Binocular the 5/6 favourite.

The race will also see the much-anticipated return of Peddlers Cross who is next in the market at 7/2. Starluck is an 11/2 shot with Nearby next at 12/1.

Can Denman Do It Again?

After the Champion Trainer was brought to tears by an historic weight-carrying performance last season, dual Hennessy Gold Cup winner Denman has been installed by William Hill as their 5-1 favourite for a repeat win in the famous handicap chase.

Denman now heads to the Newbury

Chased home last season by stablemate What A Friend, it is only appropriate that the Alex Ferguson/Jed Mason is again quoted as the 11-2 second-favourite with Hills, with Diamond Harry and Pandorama thereafter at 8-1.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’the unthinkable was achieved last season with an awe-inspiring weight-carrying performance by Denman in the Hennessy that brought the crowd (and bookies) to tears. Paul Nicholls and his team at Ditcheat have proved this horse can be targeted towards anything, and only the hardest of souls would doubt his ability to dominate again.’’

Findlay Splits from Nicholls and Barber

Denman’s co-owners Harry Findlay and Paul Barber have mutually agreed to end their association, primarily they are known for owning former Gold Cup Winner, Denman.

Free Horseracing Tips

Harry Findlay charged by BHA

Professional gambler Harry Findlay will no longer have horses with Champion Trainer Paul Nicholls, the trainer of 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Denman. This stems from Harry Findlay being banned for six months after being found guilty by the British Horseracing Authority of laying one of his own horses, the Paul Nicholls-trained Gullible Gordon, on two separate occasions in contravention of the rules of racing.

“Harry and I have agreed to split up, mainly to do with the situation with the BHA,” said Barber. I’ve said I think he has been harshly treated, but at the same time he feels very hurt by it.”

Denman will be owned solely by Barber, Nicholls’ landlord and principal patron.

Big Fella Thanks, another high-profile horse co-owned by the pair, will run in the colours of Findlay’s mother, Maggie.

Fourth in this year’s John Smith’s Grand National, Big Fella Thanks will move to Ferdy Murphy‘s stables in North Yorkshire.

“It’s great to get a horse of that calibre. It’s a big boost for the yard and we’re delighted to get him,” said Murphy.

“Harry rang me on Sunday and asked if we would take him and he confirmed it on Monday morning after he’d had a meeting with Paul Barber that the horse would be coming here.

“He asked me if I would be interested in training the horse. I said I would and he said it would run in his mother’s name. He said was that all right and I said OK.

“It’s grand, happy days. Any horse with that rating (151) is great to have.”

Speaking to The Times, Mrs Findlay (told the real story) said: “We have had horses at Ditcheat for eight or nine years and many people there will know just how honest and straight Harry is with his gambling.

“Yet the support, from the place where Gullible Gordon was trained, has simply not been loud enough or strong enough.”

Sea The Stars last year's Derby winner

3:30 Epsom Prompter- win. Lets start at home with the Derby trial at Epsom where Prompter is the main attraction and will look to emulate Sea The Stars brilliant win in the Derby 2009.  It is interesting that Hayley Turner gets the ride for Michael Bell at this level. He went close on his debut last year so may not be the hardest horse to get fit and this son of Motivator (who won The Derby for the stable) should relish the longer trip today. As we know his sire won at the track (2005 Derby winner) and a bold bid is expected. I would be shocked if he didn’t win.

5:30 Punchestown Denman – win. I do love Denman. He may be a gelding but he has more balls than most colts. He comes back time after time and proves the doubters wrong. The run in The Gold Cup was excellent and I am absolutely delighted that Tony McCoy retains the ride. You can stick your criticism of McCoy where the sun doesn’t shine. The best jockey ever and any fool who doubts that just needs to look at the record book and spend five minutes in his company.I don’t buy this being polite, there are too many idiots talking rubbish where McCoy is concerned. Denman should be too good for these, as long as he is fresh.

Good Luck on Wednesday.

Denman runs at Punchestown

The Paul Nicholls-trained winner of the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup returned to something like his best form when runner-up for the second year running in the blue riband last month. The 10-year-old spearheads a three-pronged British assault on the big prize, backed up by The Queen’s Barbers Shop, trained by Nicky Henderson, and Philip Hobbs’ Planet Of Sound.

Another former Gold Cup winner in the line-up is 2006 victor War Of Attrition, trained by Mouse Morris. Notre Pere, who took this race 12 months ago, goes again for Jim Dreaper, while Willie Mullins is double-handed with Cooldine and J’y Vole. Paul Nolan saddles Joncol, with Follow The Plan, Tranquil Sea and the Dessie Hughes-trained pair of Rare Bob and Siegemaster also engaged.

One of Ireland’s most popular chasers of recent times has his last race ever on Wednesday as War Of Attrition ends a productive career. Now 11, Mouse Morris’ stable star was narrowly beaten by Brave Inca in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle of 2004 but his future was always going to lie over fences. He won the Swordlestown Cup in 2005, the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2006 and the Guinness Gold Cup a month later.

Injury kept him off the track for nearly two years but he returned with a win over another Gold Cup winner, Kicking King. He still managed to win two Grade Two hurdles this winter before running well for a long way in the World Hurdle at Cheltenham. “He likes Punchestown and the ground is in his favour,” said Morris.
