The Hitman Horseracing Tips, Saturday 16 October

Well, what today we have in store today with top-class action from Newmarket (and boy is it top-class) as well as jump racing from Cheltenham. This day really marks the transition from flat racing to jump racing, but the big race is definitely the Dewhurst stakes at Newmarket.

Frankel, Henry Cecil

How Good is Frankel?

Carl Harris, The Hit Man, Takes a Look at the Day’s Action and Mark Your Card with the Best Bets on Super Saturday..

I make no apologies for focusing on Newmarket today with one eye on Cheltenham for what promises to be a fantastic winter of National Hunt racing. The best of the action without a shadow of a doubt is the champion stakes card at Newmarket, which kicks off with a group 2 (1:50) and the return to action, at a meaningful level at least, of Delegator. A rating of 121 puts him in group one class and really he should win this quite readily with the main challenge coming from Red Jazz, who seems to find winning very difficult.

Delegator return to action last month with a good win at Newbury and he is sure to have improved for that outing. Indeed, Frankie Dettori told Racing UK that he gave him a really good feel in recent work on the gallops this week and if he runs to the form he has shown in the past, using his blistering turn of speed, then Delegator should be somewhat of a good thing here. Famous last words you may say, but he does tick all the boxes here.

Delegator can win for us on Saturday

The big race of the day, possibly of the season and in some respects, in juvenile terms, of the century is the Dewhurst Stakes (2:45) which features three unbeaten, and the best, two-year-olds we have seen this season. This really shakes up as a great race and whoever wins here will go into winter quarters as favourite for the 2000 Guineas next year. Though you cannot readily dismiss Saamidd, the amount of Frankie Dettori, I think this boils down to our match between Dream Ahead and Frankel. Regular readers will know that Dream Ahead holds a special place in my affections having landed a couple of group ones in great style. However, only a fool would ignore the vibes emanating from Newmarket about Frankel.

Henry Cecil is possibly the best trainer of all time, a personal view, but without a shadow of a doubt he is one of the all-time greats. He has publicly said that this is the best horse he has trained since Wallow who was his first 2000 Guineas winner. If you do not take that seriously, then my friends I make no apologies for calling you an idiot. I was told that in a competitive gallop at home Frankel went clear by some 25 lengths. Some very serious people are saying that he could be the best two-year-old of all time,

I have never heard such terminology about a horse in my lifetime. I think Dream Ahead is a very good horse indeed, but possibly Frankel is one of those that comes along so infrequently that you have to call him exceptional. He looks the real deal and has done absolutely nothing wrong so far, safe Saturday is his big test but I can tell you right now he is fully expected to pass it with flying colours. I would advise taking the price in the morning because the weight of money expected for Frankel will be huge, but in all reality he will probably be too short for many to get involved with. I think we are safe with our forecast of Frankel to beat Dream Ahead. I would strongly advise taking the price now about Frankel for the 2000 Guineas as he is very likely to be odds-on after tomorrow.

If that wasn’t good enough straight after we have the Champion Stakes (3:00) which is another fascinating group one contest. Henry Cecil runs last year’s winner Twice Over again but I think this can go to the boys in blue with Poet’s Voice who has improved out of hand this season and showed genuine class when beating Ripe Van Winkle under a scintillating Frankie Dettori ride in the Queen Elizabeth at Ascot last time out. I strongly fancy him to win again. There is no better jockey to judge the pace in a race than Frankie Dettori and as a backer I see him as a big reason for backing Poet’s Place..

Twice Over goes in these colours

Well, what a superb opening to the card, but it does not stop there, The Totesport Cesarewitch (3:40) is the next on the card. This is in truth a bit of a lottery although I have to say that if money talks then Universal Truth, trained in Ireland by Dermot Weld, is the one to be on. There has been a sustained anti-post gamble on this fella, but I prefer Red Cadeaux, who offers better value and is a rock solid each way bet, widely available at 10 – 1.  Ed Dunlop’s gelding comes here on the back of a very decent course and distance trial which had many of today’s opposition well beaten behind. The blinkers could hold the key to his chances and one cannot ignore the fact that Johnny Murtagh rides him again, no doubt having had opportunities to ride several others. My advice would be to take the price in the morning.

What a great day of racing at Newmarket as the 2010 flat season draws to a close. Cheltenham stage is a very good day racing which really marks the start of the National Hunt season and the buildup to the 2011 Cheltenham Festival which is just the best week of the year and my best bet of the day at Cheltenham is Barizan (3:15) although I have to be perfectly honest about it, I will be focusing on the flat.at least for today!

Good look, Carl.

It’s the start of a really decent weekend of horseracing with good cards at both Ayr and at Newbury. Poets Place I see was the last out of the draw for the Ayr Gold Cup on Thursday, but I think it will be the first past the post on Saturday, 6-1 looks great value, get on now!

Delegator returns to action….. Free Horseracing Tips for Thursday…

2:35 Newbury, Delegator, Win. Despite an absence of 314 days Delegator should make a winning return to action in what is I race beneath his true grade. This is a group one horse and if fully fit, which he should be coming from the Godolphin stable, he should win this and get his career back on track. He has an official rating of 121 which is well ahead of anything else in the field with I think the main danger being Yaa Wayl who ran very well at York four weeks ago and runs here receiving weight, but it will be a big disappointment I think to connections is Delegator didn’t win.

3:10 Newbury, Rainbow Peak, Win. This race is billed as an Arc trial which is in truth a bit of a joke. I have not gone back in history but am prepared to eat my hat if a winner of this race has ever gone on to win the Arc. That said it stacks up as a decent group 3 contest and I am very much in the Rainbow Peak Camp. I am a big fan of Neil Callan but I have to say I don’t think his ride on Michael Jarvis’s four-year-old was his finest hour when second by a neck at York, I think Frankie Dettori got the better of him that day when Rainbow Peak should really have won the race. Today there it is another Godolphin horse who poses the main danger in receipt of seven pounds this race is there for the taking for Rainbow Peak, especially as Ted Durcan takes the ride on the top weight.

3:55 Ayr, Krypton Factor, Win. Krypton Factor should continue his winning streak with our win in a listed company with Seb Sanders making the long trip north of the border to ride for trainer Sir Mark Prescott. With a rating of 100 and still improving I make this one my best bet of the day, it would be a big shock were this one not to prevail. Seb Sanders is your archetypal no-nonsense jockey who gives absolutely everything whether it be a seller or the Derby and rarely, if ever, makes a tactical mistake. I think we can go for a nice tickle here!

Good luck!

8-1 The Field for Golden Jubilee Stakes

8-1 THE FIELD IN THE GOLDEN JUBILEE AS DELEGATOR, FLEETING SPIRIT, AND ROCKET MAN TOP THE BETTING!

Delegator heads a strong list of candidates bidding for glory at this year’s Royal Ascot, with the Godolphin runner topping the betting for the Golden Jubilee Stakes alongside Fleeting Spirit, and Golden Shaheen runner-up Rocket Man.

Delegator wins on Godolphin Debut

The trio top the market ahead of 9-1 chance Canford Cliffs, who could turn to sprinting should next week’s 2000 Guineas bid prove unsuccessful. Overseas raiders have provided strong contenders for the Ascot sprints in recent years, and Ballydoyle’s significant new recruit Star Spangled Banner (10-1) holds an entry following his previous campaign in Australia.

Australian entry Nicconi (20-1) has disappointed of late, but boasts a win back in January in the Lightning Stakes to his name. The five-furlong Grade One at Flemington holds an illustrious list of winners with Scenic Blast, Apache Cat, Miss Andretti, and Takeover Target all taking recent renewals.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’As 8-1 the field would suggest, this year’s renewal of the Golden Jubilee is wide open with an intriguing mixture of seasoned sprinters, overseas entries, and newcomers who could light-up the sprinting division.’’

Golden Jubilee Stakes: 8-1 Delegator, Fleeting Spirit, Rocket Man, Canford Cliffs, 10-1 Awzaan, Happy Zero, Kinsale King, Showcasing, Starspangledbanner, 12-1 Joy And Fun, Overdose, Paco Boy, 14-1 Inler, Kingsgate Native, West Ocean, 16-1 Alverta, Fravashi, High Standing, Main Aim, Sayif, Total Gallery, 20-1 Arcano, Gold Trail, Nicconi, Varenar, War Artist, 25-1 Arctic, Equiano, Marchand D’Or, Mullionmileanhour, Our Jonathan, Regal Parade, Triple Aspect 33-1 bar (EW 1/4 1,2,3)

Mastercraftsman Out of QEII

As expected, Mastercraftsman has been declared a non-runner for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on Saturday.

Aidan O’Brien warned he was only in as a precaution should Rip Van Winkle miss the race. Clearly Rip Van Winkle is fine and will run against Delegator in the showpiece.

Mastercraftsman was officially taken out of the Ascot race on Friday evening.

A great day at Ascot with the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes taking centre stage. There are some very good races at Ascot which is where I have decided to focus my efforts today. There are decent cards at Haydock and Chester as well as jumps racing at Market Rasen. The day is completed by an all-weather card under the lights at Kempton.

The card at Ascot is of very high quality, (pattern races in bold);

1:55 Deloitte Rosemary Handicap (fillies’ Listed) (3yo+, Class 1, 1m, 18 runners)
2:30 Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes (c&g) (group 2) (2yo, Class 1, 1m, 11 runners)
3:05 Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile (group 1) (2yo, Class 1, 1m, 9 runners)
3:40 Totesport.com Challenge Cup Heritage Handicap (3yo+, Class 2, 7f, 29 runners)
4:15 Queen Elizabeth Ii Stakes (sponsored By Sony) (group 1) (3yo+, Class 1, 1m, 5 runners)
4:50 Miles & Morrison October Stakes (fillies’ Listed) (3yo+, Class 1, 7f, 12 runners)
5:25 Tabac Gordon Carter Handicap (3yo+, Class 3, 2m, 10 runners)

2.30 Ascot- Frozen Power, Win

The Royal Lodge is an important two year-old race and as usual has attracted a quality field. The stand out bet in Frozen Power (2.30) for Frankie Dettori and Godolphin. Although this is a step up in class he won a decent listed race at Deauville with the mile trip looking tailor made for the son of Oasis Dream. I think this will be another one for Godolphin who have a host of decent two year-olds. Frozen Power can kick off the day with a winner for us.

Goldolphin in form...

Goldolphin in form...

3.05 Ascot- Long Lashes, Win

It is Godolphin and Frankie Dettori who I think will land the fillies mile with Long Lashes (3.05). This race was won by Rainbow View last year who was the winter favourite for the 1000 Guineas, an important race. I am prepared to five her another chance, down in grade after finishing fourth in a group one last time out at the Curragh, which was on heavy ground which didn’t suit. Back on a sound surface Long Lashes will run better and I take her to win the fillies mile.

4.15 Ascot- Rip Van Winkle, Win

The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes is a small but select field with Ballydoyle going head to head with Godolphin. Rip Van Winkle (4.15) takes on Godolphin, both of whom won at Goodwood last time out. Rip Van Winkle was behind Delegator in the 2000 Guineas but was short of a run that day and has run with credit in group one races all season, winning the Sussex Stakes last time out. That was in a very good time and I think he is now a better horse than Delegator. Rip Van Winkle is my confident selection for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

Rip Van Winkle Clear QEII Bet, Saturday 26th September

Aidan O’Brien will be lifting the QEII trophy on Saturday, but the question is with which horse?  Aidan O’Brien has declared Mastercraftsman as a precaution for Saturday’s Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot. He will only run if stablemate Rip Van Winkle misses the Group One contest, meaning a field of four will go to post on Saturday. The racecard for the race is below. (From Sportinglife.com)

Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (sponsored By Sony) (group 1)

1 (3) silks 1-03121 Aqlaam 20 Course and Dist winner 4 9-3 W J Haggas R Hills 120
2 (2) silks 5-12821 Delegator 28 Distance winner 3 8-13 Saeed Suroor L Dettori 121
3 (4) silks 4-51123 Mastercraftsman (IRE) 21 Course and Dist winner 3 8-13 A P O’Brien C O’Donoghue 127
4 (1) silks 17-4421 Rip Van Winkle (IRE) 59 Distance winner 3 8-13 A P O’Brien J P Murtagh 128
5 (5) silks 12-12 Zacinto 28 Distance winner 3 8-13 Sir Michael Stoute R L Moore 113

The race throws up an interesting dual between Ballydoyle and Godolphin. As much as I like Delegator I do not think he can beat Rip Van Winkle. If Rip Van Winkle were to miss the race it would be closer but he is very solid and if he shows up Rip Van Winkle, in my view will win the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

Delegator Far Too Good Today

Delegator wins on Godolphin Debut

Delegator wins on Godolphin Debut

Regular Racing Diary readers will have taken the evens and the easy victory will have come as no surprise, but it was very impressive! Godolphin are in good form and could now aim Delegator at a Group One race.

Frankie Dettori who rode him to victory said;

He showed a tremendous turn of foot, he’s a proper horse, He was second to Sea the Stars, he was second to Mastercraftsman. It was nice to get his confidence back today and it’s all systems go for the QEII. I spoke to Jamie (Spencer) this morning and he said ride him with confidence. I was actually quite taken with the way he picked up – I haven’t ridden a horse like this for a while.”

Saturday’s Horseracing Tips, 29th August

By Carl Harris

By Carl Harris

A great day of racing on Saturday kicks off a bank  holiday weekend. There is some top quality action at both Goodwood and Newmarket with decent cards elsewhere, including the Beverley bullet sprint. There is no shortage of racing with the final night meetings (on turf) of the year. Cartmel stage a jumps card, a track I fully recommend visiting, it is something special.

I am focusing on the pattern racing today, which presents some very interesting and exciting opportunities.

2.35 Goodwood- Urban Poet, Win

As I have said before Godolphin and Frankie Dettori are on fire, with 30 and 40 percent strike rates, respectively. Urban Poet (2.35) sees them team up in the listed March Stakes over 1m 6f. The lightly raced three year-old followed up his maiden win with a third place in the Gordon Stakes for Mark Johnston. Now with Godolphin they obviously think the extra two furlongs will suit and the drop in class is an obvious positive. This is a horse full of potential and could win this in good style.

3.10 Goodwood- Delegator, Win (NAP)

Delegator (3.10) makes his debut for Godolphin with Frankie Dettori taking the ride.  Previously with Brian Meehan he ran a fantastic second to Sea The Stars in the 2000 Guineas having bolted up in the Craven Stakes. He was second to Mastercraftsman in the St James Palace Stakes, genuine group one form and he should win down in grade to group two company. This is a very strong bet, certainly the best of the day and I recommend taking the early prices about a horse that is sure to be well supported.

Delegator now with Godolphin

Delegator now with Godolphin

3.45 Goodwood- Full Mandate, Win

Full Mandate (3.45) was an unlucky to meet Lady of the Dessert last time who has confirmed the form by winning a group two at York since. The  Hannon team is in good form, as always, and I fully expect Full Mandate to confirm her ability by landing this group three Prestige Stakes over seven furlongs. With Ryan Moore aboard we can have every confidence that she will get a good ride.

3.25 Newmarket- Strike The Deal, Win

Strike The Deal (3.25) ran well last time in the group one Golden Jubilee. That was a much better race than this and as I have said on numerous occasions it pays to follow group one form in a lower grade. Jeremy Noseda will hope to get another win on the board for his four year-old. The handicapper rates him as the best in the race and should he run as he did at the Royal meeting then we should be collecting.

Carl Harris’ Best Bets for Saturday 29th August

2.35 Goodwood- Urban Poet, Win

3.10 Goodwood- Delegator, Win (NAP)

I have to be honest, it is not getting any better! This week’s cards have been poor and today is no exception. I am wondering if it is just me, perhaps I need a holiday, but I am hearing the same moans from my colleagues in the game.

I once again advise modest stakes, but the good news is the weekend is looking really good with the Celebration Mile and much better quality racing that we have seen this week. I will be getting stuck in to that and will make up for a slow week. Delegator looks like making his Godolphin debut in that race and with six meetings on Friday and Saturday you can be sure things will pick up.

On Thursday I have one modest bet for you;

Only One Bet Today should see us in profit....

Only One Bet Today should see us in profit....

4.40 Ayr- Mutawarath, Win

Mutawarath (4.40) is a rare runner at Ayr for William Haggas who appears to have found a decent opportunity for his colt’s handicap debut. He won a maiden at York last time out, form which is working out quite nicely. The handicapper has awarded him a mark of 83. which I think is fair. York maiden’s are usually of a high quality and he was a ready winner on the Knavesmire. I like Mutawarath today, which is the only bet of the day.

Delegator Prepares for Godolphin Debut

Spencer Will NOT ride Delegator

Delegator now with Godolphin

Godolphin duo Delegator and Evasive are among nine entries for the Celebration Mile at Goodwood on Saturday. Delegator has been off the track since finishing second to Mastercraftsman in the St James’s Palace Stakes for Brian Meehan, and could make his debut for the boys in Blue on Saturday. The form now looks rock solid and he could be a decent horse.

Delegator was second in the 2000 Guineas to Sea The Stars at Newmarket and you have to say that the form looks good!

Evasive has already had one run for Godolphin, but ran no sort of race when beaten into sixth in Newbury’s Hungerford Stakes, he is entered.

Mac Love, Stef Liddiard’s Sovereign Stakes hero, could go in search of more Group-race glory after being supplemented for Saturday’s Group Two prize, while Glorious Goodwood scorer Zacinto has also been added to the line-up.

Beacon Lodge, Cesare, Ordnance Row, Premio Loco and Smokey Oakey complete the field.

Lets hope we see Delegator at Goodwood on Saturday!
