4.30 Lingfield Absolutely no pace in this race and you should be looking to support anything on the front end. I tend to like backing the first two or three on the front end because the gallop should be sedate here.

4.00 Lingfield – We’ve lost a front runner in WOTASHIRTFULL but I’ve had another 400/300 about the trio ANNA OF KIEV, GARSTANG and EVEN BOLDER winning the race given the strong pace going to be set here by Master Lightfoot, Billy Red an Incomparable. GARSTANG will have first run at the leaders with ANNE OF KIEV and EVEN BOLDER closing fast late. I expect the pace to collapse but feel free in running to watch and make a decision.

1.05 Lingfield – BEYOND looked pony size in the paddock at Wolves and although this looks a very bad race I don’t think he has a deal of scope. People are looking at the GREFRIARSCHORISTA form and thinking that on that footing he looks a shoe in. However for a horse making its debut late in the year at wolverhampton tells me this is no world beater and I’m a layer at 1.67

Todays Live Trading Advice Schedule

Lingfield: 1:05 1:40 4:00 4:30

Doncaster: 1:20 3:05

Today’s Outright Bets Summary

4.00 Lingfield – 1pt win ANNE OF KIEV @ 7/2, 1pt win EVEN BOLDER @ 9/1, 1pt win GARSTANG @ 9/1 (like having 3pts @ 11/8)

4.00 MARRIOTT HOTEL OPENING SPRING 2010 HANDICAP (4) (AWT) 5f

The pace shape is vital for 90 – 95% of handicaps and here it will simply be a war of attrition up front with no less than FOUR confirmed front runners with arguably INCOMPARABLE likely to be up there early as well. This should play right into the hands of the three horses who will have the race run to produce their very best form.

It may seem alien to some by backing three horses in one race but why not? If we have an edge over the market because we have worked out the pace scenario then there is no problem. By Backing ANNE OF KIEV @ 7/2, EVEN BOLDER and GARSTANG @ 9/1 a piece we are in effect backing an 11/8 chance as that is what backing all three together works out at. You may want to consider changing the bet so you do win the same amount whetever wins the race but for account purposes I will keep the stakes at 1pt per horse, keeping it simple.

The dutch stakes will be £52.63 @ 7/2 ANNA OF KIEV and £23.68 each on the other two at 9/1 each. That’s £100 staked and £236.84 returns if any one of the three selections is successful.

ANNE OF KIEV looks like a mare to follow since arriving at Jeremy Gask from John Gosden, she was a quirky filly for her former trainer but hasn’t shown that for her new trainer, who is adept at training highly strung horses like her. SHe won well off a strong pace at Wolverhampton last time and has the same scenario again, a three pounds penalty shouldn’t stop her from moving forward. GARSTANG loves it around here he’s a four time course winner and off a mark of 75 with a perfect pace set up (will track the pace) should be going close here. The same can be said for EVEN BOLDER, who can often find less than expected but is well handicapped on his best form and his return from a six week break last time should have blown ut the cobwebs.

I think at 11/8 the trio we’ve got a terrific bet given that there is a very high chance that the pace will collapse on the front end.

Sariska can complete Oaks double…

Sariska v Midday- The rematch....

Sariska v Midday- The rematch....

Irish Oaks, 3.40, The Curragh

All eyes will be on the Curragh on Sunday, with no flat racing in the UK. There are three jumps meetings but I will not be backing anything over the obstacles on this hard, fast ground. The good news is that we have an excellent group one race, the Irish Oaks, which offers a rematch between Epsom runner-up Midday and her conqueror Sariska (3.40).

The weather forecast is dire in Ireland and we could be looking at very soft going, but I am going to remain loyal to the Oaks winner, who we backed at Epsom. Being by Pivotal Sariska should handle some cut and you cannot crab her form. A winner of The Musidora she showed tenacity to fight off a spirited challenge from Henry Cecil’s filly to win the filly’s classic. Jamie Spencer said he thought he hit the front too early on her and I am sure will ride her differently in Ireland.

The betting suggests that this is a two horse race, but there may be something lurking in there to trouble the English big guns. The dark horse may well be John Oxx’s  Beauty O’ Gwaun who has been very patiently campaigned by her excellent trainer. She is highly thought of but it would take a leap of faith to see her beating the Epsom Oaks pair. Given the price Beauty O’ Gwaun may be a decent lay at the prices. We will have both Sariska and Midday on side, which looks a decent proposition and the best angle to approach this one, in my view.

Only one race today, which hopefully Sariska will win landing a winning bet and a lay for us.

Good luck.

Sea The Stars

Sea The Stars

I will be Painting The Clouds at Market Rasen…

Sea The Stars is a superstar, with the temperament, tenacity and ability of a true champion. The win in the Eclipse is the best performance seen since Nashwan twenty years ago and I hope that he can confirm his status by taking on Fame and Glory in the Irish Champion Stakes next time.

Much lower grade stuff today. I keep banging on about this but Sundays are just a wasted opportunity and should be of better quality.

Just two bets for me today, both on the flat but under different codes.  At Ayr I think that Tom Tower (4.10) can defy an eleven pounds hike in the weights and follow up a very easy eight lengths win last time. Refreshed after a break he looked in great shape and in a moderate looking race is taken to oblige.

At Market Rasen Alan Swinbank runs yet another high-class bumper horse in Paint The Clouds (5.20). A course and distance winner last time the hat-trick should be landed in what looks a very weak race. The price on offer, at time of writing, offers outstanding value as I can not see any other outcome than Paint The Clouds winning this race.

Have a great day, good luck.

Mondays Horseracing Tips…29th June

We find a Racing Hero tonight at Windsor in Ryan Moore…

Fame and Glory was an easy winner of the Irish Derby on Sunday and I really hope you took the early price which was a gift. Many have said that he may have beaten Sea the Stars on that performance, I just think it franks the Derby form and makes the Derby winner a good thing for Saturday’s Eclipse.

FAME AND GLORY is now the 4-1 (from 8-1) joint-favourite with Stan James for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in October after victory in the Group 1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby. The rematch will be worth watching!

Ryan Moore- Our Racing Hero on Monday....

Ryan Moore- Our Racing Hero on Monday....

Today at Windsor….

Before that group one we have to navigate through this weeks more modest offerings, starting with Monday’s action. The best cards are this evening’s at Windsor and this afternoon at Pontefract which should both be well attended, particularly with a heat wave warning issued by the Met Office!

We start with Racing Hero (8.10) who makes his handicap debut off a mark of 80, which I think is lenient, at Windsor.  He won his maiden very cosily, beating a horse who went on to win a maiden with equal ease next time out. Jeremy Noseda’s colt hacked up over a mile and a half at Doncaster and I would suggest is much better than an 80 rated handicapper, connections who paid  160,000 Guineas to purchase this son on Montjeu as yearling will certainly hope so.

Ryan Moore is aboard again in a race that should be a formality in the context of what is expected from this individual. Once again it may pay to take the early prices. I will be shocked if this is not well supported and equally so should he not win. Without question Racing Hero is my bet of the day.

At Pontefract…

Although not much of a price Queen Eleanor (5.15) should make the trip to Pontefract pay by landing this five runner maiden. She came close last time at Goodwood and this is much easier and John Gosden will be left scratching his head if she is unable to get off the mark here.  She has a decent attitude and should be up to the relatively straight forward task.

A couple of winners should set up a week that I hope will be as full of winners as sunshine.

Mondays Bets

5.15 Pontefract- Queen Eleanor, win

8.10 Windsor- Racing Hero, win

If you missed Sunday’s Irish Derby, then its on Youbube and you can watch Fame and Glory win below…….

Sundays Horseracing Tips…28th June

Seeking Fame and Glory with Youmzain…

Irish Derby is Fame and Glory's to win today!

Irish Derby is Fame and Glory's to win today!

It has been a great week, but it came to an end on Saturday, but Sunday should be anoter winning day for us. What’s equally disappointing is the defection of Sea The Stars from today’s Irish Derby, but the good news is he will run at Sandown next Saturday in the Eclipse.

Irish Derby…

We gave you some early prices yesterday, but Stan James are offering 11-10 about Fame and Glory this morning, so get on this now. Its the best price and its a great price!

25 Free Bet

We were on Fame and Glory (4.20) at Epsom and we should gain compensation at the Curragh by taking Aidan O.Brien’s three year-old to win at even money. I cannot see him being a much bigger price at any stage before the race and without  Sea The Stars this is genuine value in my view.In fact I think he will be odds on and win, so take 11-10 right now! Click teh Stan James advert and open an account. You will get a Free Bet when you do and will get off to a winning start at 11-10!

25 Free Bet

At Epsom he beat them all but the great horse with some critics, somewhat harshly, rounding on Seamus Heffernan’s riding tactics. Johnny Murtagh takes over in the saddle, having had the choice of six Ballydoyle runners in the race. The ground that was a worry for John Oxx should be no problem for Fame and Glory who has won on ground ranging from good to heavy. I simply can’t see this horse getting beaten today and have backed him accordingly at the early Betfair price of evens, which I think offers genuine value. Fame and Glory is the clear choice to land the Irish Derby.

Grand Prix Saint Cloud…

With fairly moderate cards at home we turn to France for the Grand Prix de Saint Cloud and the Mick Channon’s Youmzain (3.30). This horse has been unlucky but is a group one winner and, as Fame and Glory, offers backers genuine value at the early prices. I thought he would be shorter than the 2.5 available this morning  on Betfair. I would advice taking the early price and get on with Betfair.

Youmzain is a 6-year-old son of Sinndar trained by Mick Channon in Newmarket, Youmzain has been the runner-up in the last two runnings of the Arc de Triomphe. On June 5th, his nose second in the Coronation Cup, in which he split Ask and Look Here, left him second-best in that 1 1/2-mile Group 1 for the second time in two years. The 12 furlongs of Sunday’s contest, in which he picks up the services of jockey Christophe Soumillon, suit him perfectly, in a race he won last year.

So its a group one double for us on Sunday, good luck!

Friday..Good Thing at Musselburgh..

Baizically It Is A Special At Musselburgh In The 2.55 says Nathan Lynch

After scratchings only 4 horses greet the starter in the 2.55 from Musselburgh and one stands out as clearly a superior staying prospect to the rest over the 12f100y test.

Top weight Baizically comes into this on the back of winning two on end including against similar 2 back by 4l over 13f on good to firm going at Hamilton, last start it franked that form winning again for a bigger purse over 14f on this track. Both starts suggest he is well above the level required to win here and he is bred for this trip being by Gallileo. He will be on pace and the pace scenario should prove a bonus which is likely to be slow. It simply keeps on ticking every box we look at. Class will prevail in this facile 4 horse staying contest.

Royal Ascot Day Three…Yeats’ Date with Destiny…

Murtagh will ride Yeats in the Gold Cup

Murtagh will ride Yeats in the Gold Cup

The American’s did it again with another flying two year-old and can land a third winner is as many days with Yogaroo (2.30) in the Norfolk Stakes. There is a definite draw bias favouring the stands side rail so this race will be fought out between Monsieur Chevalier and the fast American horse drawn in stall two and three. The US horses are so fast away from the stalls which is a contrast to Richard Hannon’s four time winner who takes time to get into top gear. I have already backed Yogaroo who could actually go off as favourite.

The best bet of the day for me is Leocorno (3.05) looked top class last time at Sandown and missed the Oaks in order to run at Royal Ascot. She steps up to 12 furlongs for the first time and should, hopefully, give Sir Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore their first winner at the meeting.

This race looks a match between Leocorno and the Timeform top rated Take the Hint who also caught the eye on her reappearance at Newmarket. The official handicapper has John Gosden’s filly 10 pounds ahead, but  he will be revising the marks after this race I’m sure!

Ryan Moore was the favourite for top jockey prior to Tuesday but is yet to ride a winner and he will want to break that hoodoo as soon as possible.

Then it’s the feature race, the Gold Cup (3.45) and Yeats’ date with destiny as he chases a fourth Gold Cup . You just know that he will do it! He is the best stayer I have ever seen and Aidan O’Brien would not run him was he not showing all the right signs.

Geordieland looks to have improved and could muster a better fight than last year but he rarely runs two good races in a row. The roof will come off Ascot’s expensive grandstand if Johnny Murtagh gets the big horse home in front.

These are the great moments of the sport that make history and I just hope that he does it and cements his place is Royal Ascot folklore.

Thursdays Best Bets @ Royal Ascot….

2.30 Yogaroo- win @ 3.25
3.05 Leocorno- win @ 2.88
3.45 Yeats- win @ 3.25

Carl Harris of Racing Diary previews day one of Royal Ascot….

Royal Ascot 2009 kicks off with now fewer than 3 Group one races back to back and presents punters with an opportunity to get ahead.

2:30 Queen Anne Stakes (group 1) (str) (4yo+, Class 1, 1m, 9 runners)

Run over a mile this is a Group 1 for 4 year olds and has attracted a field of 9 runners. Timeform have Gladiatorus as the top rated runner but it is strange that this Godolphin runner will be partnered by Ahmed Ajtebi with Frankie Dettori riding Alexandros in the second colours. Is this a changing of the guard or does Frankie not fancy the horse that performed well in Duabi over the winter?

Timeform Top Rated;
Gladiatorous – 146
Paco Boy- 143
Main Aim- 140

Market Odds (Paddy Power)
2 Gladiatorus, 11-4 Paco Boy, 9-2 Main Aim, 8 Alexandros, Aqlaam, 12 Cesare, 25 Arabian Gleam, 33 Dream Eater, 50 Mac Love

I would be against the favourite given the jockey arrangements but more importantly the stable form. Running in Dubai is a different thing to running in England and therefore I would Lay Gladiatorus on Betfair.

I will be backing Paco Boy and Main Aim. Regular readers will know that I believe Main Aim to be a group one horse and today we find out. Paco Boy will like the ground but is that bit better over 7 furlongs, though his trainer believes he is a miler. For me though my main bet is Main Aim and I think Ryan Moore will get off to a flyer. We advised you to back him at 6-4 for leading rider and he is now 4-6. Main Aim won easily in a handicap then showed he has a turn of foot at Haydock in the John of Gaunt Stakes.

Racing Diary Queen Anne Betting Advice;

Lay- Gladiatorus to lose

Back- Main Aim to win

3:05 King’s Stand Stakes (group 1) (3yo+, Class 1, 5f, 15 runners)

This will be fast and furious. We have already published a preview of this race which features some of the best sprinters in the business. There will be many different views on this race and it is worth noting that the margins are very small. Timeform has Australian Sprinter Scenic Blast as the top rated horse.

Timeform Top Rated;
Scenic Blast – 136
Borderlescott- 135
Fleeting Spirit -135
Amour Propre- 134

Market Odds (Paddy Power)
5-2 Amour Propre, 7-2 Scenic Blast, 9-2 Fleeting Spirit, 8 Borderlescott, Tax Free, 20 Equiano, Mythical Flight, Dandy Man, 25 Cannonball, Hoh Hoh Hoh, Angelzarke, 40 Spin Cycle, 50 Rievaulx World, Wi Dud, 66 Captain Gerrard

Having spoken to our Australian colleague Nathan Lynch you can not rule out Scenic Blast. Amour Propre, the three year-old showed real class when winning the Palace House Stakes at Newmarket. His trainer Henry Candy has said today; “The ground is fine at the moment. I hope they don’t get the two inches of rain that is lurking around. Everything is fine and I’m happy with the draw (six)”

Borderlescott will have no issues with the ground and Robin Bastiman has aimed him at this race, he will be 100% ready and I expect him to be in the shakeup. Scenic Blast is a top class sprinter and it is worth watching this Group One race won by Scenic Blast…(from YouTube)

Of course Aussie runners have a good record at Royal Ascot. He clearly comes from off the pace and has a good turn of foot but I am going to side with the 3 year-old Amour Propre who has a handy weight allowance. At Newmarket he went from the front and was a good winner. He may improve and may be very very good. I will also back Borderlescott each way.

Racing Diary Kings Stand Betting Advice…

Back Amour Propre to win

Back Borderlescott each-way

3:45 St James’s Palace Stakes (group 1) (3yo, Class 1, 1m, 10 runners)

Ten runners will compete in this three year-olds colts 1 mile group 1. Delegator has been subject of much pre-race news with Jamie Spencer being jocked off in favour of Jimmy Fortune. Mastercraftsman is now odds-on and is Timeform Top rated.

Timeform Top Rated…
Mastercraftsman- 141
Delegator- 137
Lord Shanakill- 131

Latest Odds (Paddy Power)
4-5 Mastercraftsman, 4 Delegator, 11-2 Evasive, 9 Intense Focus, 16 Soul City, 20 Orizaba, 25 Lord Shanakill, 40 Pure Poetry, 66 Set Sail, 100 Born To Be King

This race revolves arround the two market leaders. Delegator beat Mastercraftsman in the 1000 Guineas and then did not handle the soft ground in the Irish 2000 Guineas which we can see below (from Youtube)

Aidan O’Brien’s colt won this well but this race was down to the ground and if you look back at the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket the form is rock solid. I think Delegator is now a great price and will be backing him to win on this better ground. I feel sorry for Jamie Spencer but Jimmy Fortune is an excellent jockey and we can take this as a positive. 4-1 makes Delegator an each-way price. If you take out that run on heavy ground he would come here as second to Sea the Stars- a champion who is the first horse to win the Derby and the 2000 guineas in the same season. Delegator is my best bet of the day at 4-1.

Fortune has said about Delegator; “The ground was desperate at the Curragh and you have got to excuse him one bad run. You have got to respect the horse that won at the Curragh (Mastercraftsman) as he looked liked he had improved from the (Newmarket) Guineas. He obviously outgalloped them in that ground at the Curragh and he’s an improving horse.”

I agree and think this is a great value bet!

Racing Diary St Jame’s Palace Stakes Betting Advice….

Back Delegator to win

4:20 Coventry Stakes (group 2) (2yo, Class 1, 6f, 14 runners)

The first two year old race of Royal Ascot 2009 sees 14 runners line up over 6 furlongs. There is often value to be had in this race with there being little meaningful form to go on. I have one horse though that I think will win, that is Red Jazz, who is Timeform top rated.

Latest odds (Paddy Power)
6-4 Canford Cliffs, 5 No Hubris, 8 Air Chief Marshall, Red Jazz, 12 Alrasm, 16 Marsh Warbler, Raines Cross, 20 Fremont, Walkingonthemoon, Xtension, 33 Flying Statesman, Moran Gra, Rakaan, Treadwell

Red Jazz won well in his maiden and showed his class by winning again at Ascot. There is plenty more to come from Barry Hill’s colt and at the 6-1 I will be backing him each way. Canford Cliffs is teh worry but he is way too short at 6-4 and I will be taking him on.

Racing Diary Coventry Stakes Betting Advice..

Lay- Canford Cliffs

Back – Red Jazz each-way

4:55 Ascot Stakes Handicap (4yo+, Class 2, 2m 4f, 20 runners)

No in-depth write up here. A complicated looking handicap that can go the way of Kayf Aramis who is an improver and regular readers will know is in my book. We backed him at York and said then that we will be on in the Ascot Stakes.

Racing Diary Ascot Stakes Betting Advice…

Back Kayf Aramis

5:30 Windsor Castle Stakes (2yo, Class 1, 5f, 22 runners)
This is a really hard race, a 22 runner 5f 2 year-old race. I am having only a small bet on Star Rover who has looked decent and could win again, however I can not get too involved!

Fridays York Horseracing Tips….12th June

A great day on the Knavesmire ahead…

A great day of horseracing at York...

A great day of horseracing at York...

its been a poor and  mundane week so far but it gets much better from here with a great weekend and then its off to Royal Ascot. The quality of the cards have been weak in comparison to what we have ahead of us, starting today at York which is where, I am pleased to say, I will be.

Best Bets at York…

Bet of the Day: It will be late start to my betting activity on the Knavesmire with the first bet, and the best bet of the day, coming at 3.25 in the shape of John Quinn’s Hawk Mountain.  His form suggests that going left-handed on a flat galloping track such as today at York will be ideal and the step up in trip could bring about real improvement. Micky Fenton is in my view a very under-rated jockey who judges pace very well as well as being very tactically astute. He can nick a race from the front or come late to snatch it on the line. Hawk Mountain will be my biggest bet for some time and I will try and get the early prices because there is no doubt John Quinn’s four year-old will be very well supported. Remember take an early price at William Hill and if the early price drifts then you get the bigger SP!

The 4.35 is a really competitive sprint handicap over the flying five furlongs. Lochsong was a brilliant winner of the Nunthorpe and her son returns to the scene of her famous victory today. This 0-90 handicap is not as prestigious but seeing Lochstar in those famous colours at York will no doubt bring back memories of the sprint queen of years gone by.  Andrew Balding has lightly raced the five year-old who if taking after his mother will improve with age. I think though that he will have to settle for a minor role behind Sloop Johnb, back over course and distance, who can complete the hat-trick for the in-form Richard Fahey stable.

Richard Fahey loves York and this inform three year-old will relish the conditions taking on his elders for the first time which gives him a handy weight for age allowance. Paul Hanagan has ridden him to all of his three career victories and I think this is one to be on at very decent odds.

Joe Jo Star (5.05) owes us a few quid following his narrow defeat at a short price the other day at Beverley and can gain compensation is a race that will be more to his liking.

Borderlescott in fine form reports trainer

BORDERLESCOTT, an 8-1 chance with Paddy Power for next Tuesday’s King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, delighted Robin Bastiman in his final piece of strong work this morning and the North Yorkshire trainer is hopeful that he can secure his first winner at the Royal Meeting.

The Compton Place gelding, who was among today’s King’s Stand confirmations, went down by a neck to Look Busy on heavy ground last time in the Temple Stakes at Haydock, having previously finished just over two and a half lengths in third behind Amour Propre, Power’s 100-30 favourite for the King’s Stand, on his seasonal debut in the Palace House Stakes at Newmarket.

Bastiman said: He worked four furlongs with one of my lead horses this morning and he really pleased me. He has come on well for his last two runs and I couldn’t be more pleased.

He takes a few runs to get himself sorted and he is a hard horse to get fit, usually peaking in July and August. But I’m pleased with his progress and hoping for a good run, although obviously it won’t be easy as it’s a Group 1 race.

The ground was atrocious at Haydock and he had to be up there where he likes to get a good lead. It was a muddling race, but I’m glad that I ran him and he has definitely improved more than the two lengths or so that he was beaten in the Palace House. He has definitely come on a lot, but whether Henry Candy’s horse [Amour Propre] has come on as well, we’ll see.

He prefers fast ground and a fast run race, and they should definitely go fast, and five furlongs is his trip. I might run him over six furlongs again, but not at the moment.

It would be nice to get my first Royal Ascot winner, but obviously Henry thinks a lot of his, there is the Australian animal [Scenic Blast], Jeremy’s horse [ Fleeting Spirit] who beat us in the Temple last year, and obviously David Nicholls’ Tax Free. They’re all there aren’t they and it will be a very good race.

Scenic Blast is Power’s 7-2 second favourite, while Fleeting Spirit is a 9-2 chance with the universe’s friendliest bookmaker.

Paddy Power spokesman Paddy Power said: Scenic Blast and Fleeting Spirit have been popular with punters and both were backed at 8-1 with us. Amour Propre is a worthy favourite and to be mentioned in the same breath as speedballs Kyllachy and Airwave by Henry Candy shows just how much toe this horse possesses.
