Nani’s sixth-minute strike was enough to earn Manchester United a precious 1-0 Champions League win over Bursaspor at the end of a traumatic few days at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney has accused Manchester United of lacking ambition. Twenty four hours after Sir Alex Ferguson’s devastating attack on his star striker, Rooney entered the fray. In confirming he wishes to leave the Red Devils, the 24-year-old outlined why his future lies away from Old Trafford. Ferguson claimed not to have an answer.

Gareth Bale’s stunning second-half hat-trick spared 10-man Tottenham‘s blushes but failed to prevent them slumping to their first Champions League Group A defeat at Inter Milan 4-3.

Wayne Rooney……

WILLIAM HILL have cut their odds for Wayne Rooney to be sold for £31million or more from 7/2 to 3/1, after 90% of the bets they have taken in the market backed him to go for their highest quoted amount.
‘There is a theory that Wayne may opt to buy out his own contract, and a few punters have backed that eventuality, but the vast majority are convinced that he is going to go for mega-money of at least £31million’ said Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe.

Arsenal and Chelsea Win, Now United and Spurs. Champions League Betting Preview….

Andrey Arshavin, Marouane Chamakh and Sebastien Squillaci earned Arsenal a 3-1 win at Partizan Belgrade in their Champions League Group H game. Chelsea remain top of their Champions League group after first-half goals from John Terry and Nicolas Anelka helped them to seal a comfortable victory over Marseille at Stamford Bridge.

Carlo Ancelotti admitted Chelsea are in pole position to win Group F of the Champions League after cruising past Marseille.

Can Manchester United win in Valencia tonight?

Rio Ferdinand looks set to make his first start of the season for Manchester United alongside new club captain Nemanja Vidic in central defence. Both of Ferdinand’s starts this season have been without Nemanja Vidic, so the backline will have stability. The same cannot be said for the frontline with Wayne Rooney not making the trip to Spain, sidelined with injury.

This looks an exceedingly tough game for Manchester United, away to Valencia, who currently sit proudly at the top of La Liga. United have conceded nine goals in their last five Premier League games, a statistic that will no doubt worry Sir Alex Ferguson. Paul Scholes is rested for tonight’s game, but Berbatov is in sparkling form and will lead the line, probably alongside Michael Owen who scored a fantastic goal at the weekend.

The betting would suggest that this is our tight game, and indeed Valencia are favourites to win but there is value to be had whichever way you decide to go here. United are best price 15 to 8, which given recent form is about right. I personally have been of the view that United would be a better team without Rooney and now that theory will be put to the test. I am a backer of Manchester United this evening, despite the form of Valencia. There will be in the region of 2200 United fans at the game and with the warm weather it should be an enjoyable trip, made all the better by the United win, hopefully.

Tottenham Hotspur host Dutch champions FC Twente. Dawson and Gallas are both out injured and with Ledley King doubtful and a long-term injury to Jermaine Defoe Harry Redknapp has injury concerns. Redknapp is not too downhearted as he points out that Peter Crouch and new signing Van De Vart can both score goals. Spurs have the added bonus of having Dutchman Van De Vart on the team who knows the Dutch opposition very well. The good news for Spurs is that first choice keeper Gomes could be back after a month on the sidelines.

Spurs should win this game, indeed they are odds-on to do so, but it will not be easy. I expect Spurs to win in 5 to 6 looks fair.

Rangers have the benefit of home advantage this evening but this looks a tight game and I advise no bet.

Latest Champions League betting…

WILLIAM HILL offer 6/5 that NO British teams will reach the Champions League Final, 5/6 that just one will do so, and 7/1 that two will do so.

Hills make Chelsea 6/4 favourites to go furthest of the British teams and also offer 2/1 Man U; 5/2 Arsenal; 8/1 Spurs; 25/1 Rangers.

Mid Week Football Betting Tips

Chelsea and Arsenal are in Champions League action this evening. Both clubs are seeking to bounce back from a disappointing weekend results in the Premier League.

Arsenal away in Belgrade tonight

Chelsea are at home to Marseille, managed by former Chelsea player Didier Deschamps who has revealed that he could have been appointed Liverpool manager over the summer. I suspect he is glad he turned them down looking at the plight of the Anfield club this season. That said his side of double-digit odds to upset Chelsea and win this tie tonight. Chelsea are best priced 2/5 to win and really should do so quite readily, but would you lump in at those odds? I know I wouldn’t!

There is no alternative really, the draw at 4/1 has no appeal so this is one I will let pass from appointing point of view although Chelsea should win. Lampard and Drogba will miss the game for Chelsea. Frank Lampard will be out for another two weeks, recovering from surgery to a hernia problem whilst Drogba is serving the second of his two game suspension. Despite those key losses the blues should have too much in every position for the French side.

Arsenal face a more difficult task with an away tie at Partizan Belgrade, but are still odds-on to come out on top. At best price of 4/5 they will need to play much better than we saw against Bolton at the Emirates on Saturday. Arsenal keeper Manuel Almunia is not available through injury, the under fire keeper has not had a great start to the season. It seems almost certain that Arsenal will recruit a new stopper in the next transfer window, but for now they have to rely on reserve goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski in Belgrade.

Of course the Gunners still have long-term injuries to Theo Walcott, Robin Van Percie and Nikals Bendtner, which is compounded by Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey also being on the sidelines. It is an injury list that does not make good reading for Arsenal but there success so far this season suggests that when the squad is back to full strength they will be a force to be reckoned with.

So Do We Back Arsenal at Odds-On?

In short no! I would be very tempted to let these games pass without any involvement. Chelsea should win but 2/5 is way too short to get involved and Arsenal looked at sixes and sevens at times on Saturday so there is no way I can be getting involved at odds-on in a Champions League game away from home. Both English clubs may in fact win tonight but it is all about value and the risk and certainly for the risk involved the rewards are too small for me. If you are betting then I wish you the very best of luck!

Specials…

Bookmakers William Hill are offering a Wednesday British Bonanza bet. 14/1 is offered for all three British teams to win with a British scorer in each game. Hills are also offering a market on which game will see the fastest British goal. Tottenham are the 11/8 favourites to score fastest with Rangers 7/4 and Man Utd 15/8.

“With three British sides in action, it is going to be an evening for our patriotic punters to savour. Should all three win with British scorers it will be even sweeter,” said Hill’s spokesman Joe Crilly.

The game between Tottenham and FC Twente is the 4/1 joint favourite to be the highest scoring game along with the Internazionale vs Werder Bremen game.

On a night that features Tottenham, Rangers and Manchester United, it is surprisingly the Red Devils that are the only team who are not odds-on to win their game. Tottenham are priced at 8/11, with Rangers 19/20. United on the other hand are offered at 7/4 away to Valencia.

“United are struggling at the moment and our punters are preferring to back Rangers and Spurs than put faith in the brittle United defence,” said Hill’s spokesman Joe Crilly.

Arsenal and Chelsea Win Easily, Champions League Betting Update

Arsenal and Chelsea, confident bets on Wednesday both won very easily in the Champions League with a combined total of 10 goals.

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas scored twice as Arsene Wenger’s entertainers handed Champions League newcomers Braga a European masterclass with a 6-0 demolition at the Emirates Stadium.

Chelsea also cruised through their opening Champions League game with a 4-1 demolition of Slovakian side MSK Zilina in Group F. The damage was done in the opening half with two goals from Nicolas Anelka and another from Michael Essien. Daniel Sturridge added a fourth early in the second-half before Tomas Oravec scored a consolation for the home side.

WILLIAM HILL now offer 7/1 against an all British Champions League final – and 6/1 that Arsenal will agin score six or more goals in the tournament this season. ‘Arsenal have again looked unstoppable against lesser opposition – can they prove this time rouns that they can also at last outclass the big boys as well?’ asked Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe.

Wednesdays Champions League Betting Preview….

After Manchester United drew with Rangers and Spurs threw away a two-goal lead to draw in Germany, on Tuesday, tonight it is the turn of Arsenal and Chelsea to fly the Premier League flag in the Champions League.

Arsenal v Braga…

I think Arsenal are a much better team this season than they have been in recent seasons and as such I expect them to do better in the Champions League this season.  Theo Walcott, Robin van Persie (both ankle), Nicklas Bendtner (groin) and Aaron Ramsey (leg) remain out for The Gunners, but this has not inconvenienced them in the league.

Arsenal Team News: Arsenal will be without midfielder Abou Diaby (ankle) and defender Thomas Vermaelen (Achilles) for Wednesday’s Champions League Group H opener against Braga at Emirates Stadium. Fit-again winger Samir Nasri comes back into contention for the Emirates Stadium clash having recovered from knee surgery, while full-backs Gael Clichy and Bacary Sagna are expected to return after being rested for the Premier League win over Bolton.

Despite what looks like a long list of absentees Arsenal have a strong squad and should be far too good for the opposition this evening, which is reflected in their price of 1 to 4 to win the game. They should do so quite readily. Arsenal would be my first leg of a double with the second being Chelsea.

MSK Zilina v Chelsea….

Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti has already named his side ahead of their Champions League opener in Group F against MSK Zilina on Wednesday night. The Chelsea line-up is: Petr Cech, Branislav Ivanovic, John Terry, Alex, Yuri Zhirkov, Michael Essien, Yossi Benayoun, John Obi Mikel, Daniel Sturridge, Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka.

John Terry is a welcome addition back to the side but Frank Lampard is sidelined with a hernia problem and fellow England star Ashley Cole is rested by the Chelsea coach. The squad though looked very strong and certainly their league form has been nothing short of sublime which does not bode well for tonight’s hosts. I fully expect Chelsea to justify short odds and what’s more I think they are the English side who will progress furthest in this competition.

I advise a double: Chelsea and Arsenal.

Wednesdays Champions League Betting…..

Chelsea are 2/9 to beat Zilina in their opening Champions League group match. The Slovaks are 12/1 to spring an upset, with the draw a 5/1 shot.

Arsenal are 1/4 to defeat Braga, while the Portuguese team, conquerors of Celtic in the qualifying rounds, are 11/1 to win at the Emirates.
With three London clubs taking part in the competition, it’s 25/1 that Wembley hosts an all-London Champions League final in May.

Zilina 12/1, Chelsea 2/9, Draw 5/1

Arsenal 1/4, Braga 11/1, Draw 9/2

To win the Champions League
Chelsea 6/1
Arsenal 14/1
Braga 150/1
Zilina 750/1

All London Final 25/1

Tuesday’s Champions League Betting Preview, 14 September

The Champions League takes centre stage this evening with the big game being the so-called ‘Battle of Britain’ between Manchester United and Rangers at Old Trafford. Spurs are also in action at Werner Bremen.

Wayne Rooney is set to return for Manchester United having been left out of the squad for Saturday’s visit to Everton, where United threw away a 3-1 advantage in injury time. Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly left out his star striker to protect him from abuse and ridicule, following recent tabloid revelations about his private life. There will of course be a Rangers contingent present this evening but Rooney will face overwhelming support from the Old Trafford faithful. United will also welcome back Rio Ferdinand, the England captain, who could be given the armband on a regular basis at Old Trafford. Ferguson has hinted that he may make Ferdinand the club captain with the armband having been passed between Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs and most recently Ferdinand’s fellow centre Nemanja Vidic.

Michael Carrick is definitely out for United with an Achilles injury. Rangers will await the outcome of a late fitness test on defender Kirk Broadfoot who returned from international duty with an ankle injury. Steven Whitaker has been declared fit following his minor injury sustained when playing for Scotland last week. Other than Jelavic, who is not eligible to play in the Champions League Rangers have no other injury concerns.

They do have plenty of concerns though regarding how they are going to win this game. Manchester United should be far too strong for Rangers, but Sir Alex Ferguson is not prepared to under estimate the club with which he has such a close affinity. That said there is such are difference in class between the Premier League and the SPL that only an ardent Rangers fan can give the Glasgow side any chance here on Tuesday evening.

Rangers scrambled a late win over Hamilton in the league over the weekend, hardly the stuff of European champions. Man for man Manchester United totally outclass Rangers and I expect a passionate and exciting game but ultimately one in which United come out on top. Manchester United are bankers for me this evening.

Live odds…

Spurs on the other hand face a very difficult task in their first appearance in Europe’s premier club competition. It is never easy when an English team travels to Germany. Werder Bremen are a decent team and this is a very competitive game that represents genuine value for Spurs backers, but I would rather be a layer, then a backer, of Harry Redknapp’s side.

Spurs have made a stuttering start to their Premier League campaign and indeed had to overcome a first leg deficit in qualifying for the group stages of the Champions League. By laying Spurs you have both a home win and a draw onside.

Harry Redknapp knows just how tough the task is facing Spurs…

Influential midfielder Luka Modric is rated as extremely doubtful for the Group A opener on Tuesday evening having gone off with injury during Saturday’s Premier league game at West Brom. Club captain Ledley King though is set to return after being arrested over the weekend and goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini keeps his place in goal deputising for the injured first choice stopper. The Spurs cause is not helped by the absence of Jermaine Defoe and Michael Dawson as well as long-term casualties Jamie O’Hara and Jonathan Woodgate. On balance laying Spurs looks solid proposition and for those of you wanting to back the result my forecast would be a draw, but I would not be surprised in the slightest to see the German side win which is why I am advising laying Spurs.
