Jason Maguire to appeal against ban ruling him out of Champion Hurdle

Should he get to ride in the Champion Hurdle? Maguire banned at Doncaster and is due to miss the biggest ride of his life….is it fair? Should common sense prevail?

Jason Maguire is likely to miss the ride on Peddlers Cross in the Champion Hurdle, having earned a seven-day ban for abuse of the whip at Doncaster on Wednesday. Maguire finished second on Cool Mission in a beginners’ chase, after which he was found to have raised weals on his mount’s hindquarters and to have used the whip with excessive frequency.

“It’s very frustrating for me,” said the jockey, who intends to lodge an appeal with the British Horseracing Authority. If the ban remains at its present length he cannot ride for a week from 9 March, with the final day of that ban being the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival.

“I gave the horse a strong ride. It’s the marking that’s caused the problem,” Maguire said. “Once you mark a horse, there’s no comeback, but something has to be done about that rule. We are all interested in the welfare of horses but there has to be some leeway for the jockeys.”

Donald McCain, trainer of Peddlers Cross and Cool Mission, said he felt that runners from his yard were being singled out by officials. “The stewards in the north have been chasing us all year and now they’ve got us,” he said.

“This has happened an awful lot with my horses in the north and it’s becoming a joke. I don’t stop horses, we don’t abuse horses. They are always at the tough end of racing and all we do is our best. The horse has been marked, I can’t argue with that, but the horse is notoriously lazy. Jason is devastated, as they’ve cost him a Champion Hurdle ride.

“At least I’ve still got a Champion Hurdle horse. He hasn’t got anything and has put in so much work with the horse.”

McCain said it was not just Maguire who feels he has been victimised by stewards, adding “it’s all my jockeys”, though he was at a loss to offer any reason for this. “Maybe I’m saying the wrong thing. We’ve been concerned about it all winter.”

McCain said that, pending Maguire’s appeal, he would not consider a replacement jockey for Peddlers Cross, an 11–2 shot for the Champion Hurdle.

The stipendiary steward, Robert Earnshaw, said that five days of the penalty related to Maguire’s marking of Cool Mission, while two days related to his excessive use of the whip. The rider was noted by the stewards to have used the whip 18 times from the fourth-last fence. The BHA’s guidelines call for a caution where a jockey has used the whip 16 times during the whole course of a jump race, with a one-day penalty for each additional use.

The Midnight Club is the new Grand National favourite at no bigger than 12-1 after winning at Fairyhouse on Wednesday.

There was distressing news for backers of Diamond Harry, a 10-1 shot for the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The horse is “not showing the same sparkle” as before winning the Hennessy in November, according to his trainer, Nick Williams, who added: “He’s possibly an autumn horse”.

Philip Hobbs hails brilliant Menorah ahead of Champion Hurdle

Can Menorah Win The Champion Hurdle? Philip Hobbs hopes so…..

Powered by Guardian.co.ukThis article titled “Philip Hobbs hails brilliant Menorah ahead of Champion Hurdle” was written by Greg Wood, for The Guardian on Tuesday 8th February 2011 21.15 UTC

Menorah was described by his trainer, Philip Hobbs, on Tuesday as “one of those few horses where there’s no faults” as the six-year-old continued his preparation for the Champion Hurdle next month with a “brilliant” piece of work on the gallops.

Menorah is one of a significant number of Cheltenham Festival contenders who will line up without a previous outing in 2011, and he has done so well since winning the International Hurdle in early December that Hobbs has already accelerated his exercise programme with just under five weeks left until the Champion Hurdle on the first day of the Festival meeting.

“He worked brilliantly this morning,” Hobbs said. “We’ve stepped up his work earlier than anticipated due to the fact that he’s put on a bit of condition having had an easy time in December. That is a good fault as I’d much rather have him that way so that we can now work him hard and get him fitter and better.

“I couldn’t be more happy with him and I think there’s still room for improvement but this is surely one of the best Champion Hurdles we’ve had for some time. Menorah is one of those few horses where there’s no faults. He’s got the most fantastic temperament, he works well and enjoys his work on a daily basis.

“He’s still a potential improver and the worst situation, which isn’t too bad, is that he gets beaten in the Champion Hurdle and then we go novice chasing next year.”

Paul Nicholls’s Tataniano, who has not raced since November, will head straight to the Queen Mother Champion Chase next month after suffering a minor setback which has ruled him out of the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury on Saturday.

Binocular Entered at Sandown, Champion Hurdle Warm-Up

Champion Hurdle winner Binocular is amongst the six entries for Saturday’s Contenders Hurdle at Sandown. Not much of a field it has to be said! he will then head to Cheltenham for the Champion Hurdle.

Champion Hurdle Winner

Binocular is owned by JP McManus whose racing manager Frank Berry said:

“I haven’t been told that he hasn’t been entered anyway. Nicky said straight after Kempton that he wanted to run him and everything has been fine since. Touch wood, ever since the Champion last year he’s been very consistent. I suppose he might come up against Peddlers Cross again and let’s see how they get on. Binocular is in good form and the plan is to go there.”

Donald McCain Keen To Take on Binocular!

Donald McCain told At The Races that he isn’t afraid to take on Champion Hurdler Binocular with Peddlers Cross a week on Saturday.

He was left frustrated by the abandonment of Haydock due to frost on Saturday, where his stable star was due to put his unbeaten record on the line in their Champion Hurdle trial. This is what he told Matt Chapman on At The Races this afternoon….

Binocular looked back to his best last time and will be in my view hard to beat at the Cheltenham Festival in March ! Still we will see!

Dunguib On Comeback Trail

Dunguib is responding well to treatment according to his trainer and is on course to run at Gowran Park next month.

Dunguib on his way back?

Trainer Philip Fenton told the press today;

“He’s grand, he’s fine. He appears to be responding to the antibiotics, so now hopefully he’ll run in the Red Mills, Hopefully we’ll get him there in good order and the idea after that at the moment is to go to Cheltenham.

Dunguib is now an eight-year-old and is still listed in the Stan James Champion Hurdle. He shot to promenance when he won the Weatherbys Champion Bumper at the 2009 Cheltenham Festival. In 2010 Dunguib was third to Menorah in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle with many blaming the inexperience of the jockey for that loss.

On his last outing he finished sixth to Hurricane Fly in April.

Hurricane Fly Mixed Reaction for Champion Hurdle

Hurricane Fly confirmed he is a live contender for the Champion Hurdle when fluently winning in the BHP Insurances Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown.

He has now beaten rival Solwhit four times out of five and the result never looked in doubt this time, could he be a live contender for the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March? Bookies Paddy Power left him unchanged at 5-1.

William Hill clipped though Hurricane Fly’s Champion Hurdle quote to 7-2 from 4-1 as a result of a solid victory in the Irish equivalent.

Renewing rivalry with Solwhit for the fifth time, Willie Mullins’ outstanding son of Montjeu extended the score to 4-1 whilst denying his adversary a follow-up in the premier event.

Settling behind stablemate Thousand Stars until two from home, the seven-year-old had no problems in pulling clear of his challenger down the straight, finishing with a three-and-a-half lengths in hand.

Tony Kenny, spokesman for William Hill, said, ‘Hurricane Fly displayed his usual class on Sunday when clocking in at Leopardstown to add to his bourgeoning CV, confirming Solwhit superiority in the process. The Champion Hurdle hokey cokey continues, and we’ve trimmed him in to 7-2 from 4-1 after today’s success.’

Champion Hurdle: 3-1 Binocular, 7-2 Hurricane Fly, 5-1 Menorah, 11-2 Peddlers Cross, 14-1 Oscar Whisky, 16-1 Dunguib, 20-1 Cue Card, Silvianaco Conti, 25-1 Mille Chief, Overturn, Walkon, 33-1 Get Me Out Of Here, Khyber Kim, Soldatino, Solwhit, 40-1 Alavain, Starluck, 50-1 Celestial Halo, Clerk’s Choice, Salden Licht, Solix, Thousand Stars, Zaynar, Ronaldo Des Mottes, Tocca Ferro, 66-1 Barizan, 100-1 Blackstairmountain, Cristal Bonus, Notus De La Tour, Sublimity, 150-1 Bygones Of Brid (E/W 1/4 1,2,3)

Totesport Reaction…Hurricane Fly remains 9/2 for Champion Hurdle after victory in Irish equivalent

Hurricane Fly remains the 9/2 joint-second favourite with totesport for the stanjames.com Champion Hurdle after a fluent victory in the BHP Insurances Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown this afternoon.

Solwhit again proved to be no match for Willie Mullins’ gelding who ran on strongly to record his third victory this season.

“Hurricane Fly is clearly the pick of the Irish hurdlers but whether he will be able to live with the likes of Binocular and Peddlers Cross is the conundrum punters will be looking to answer in the run-up to the Champion Hurdle,” said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

Earlier on the card, Realt Dubh has been nibbled to 12/1 (from 14/1) by totesport for the Arkle after narrowly defeating Noble Prince in the Irish equivalent. The latter has been cut to 14/1 (from 20/1) whilst Flat Out, who departed two out when still travelling strongly, remains a 12/1 shot.

Hidden Cyclone has been given a quote of 14/1 for the Neptune Investments Management Novice Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival after he took the Synergy Security Solutions Novice Hurdle by two lengths from Ballyhaunis.

Hurricane Fly Wins Irish Champion Hurdle

Hurricane Fly confirmed his Champion Hurdle credentials with a confident win in the BHP Insurances Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown.

He has now beaten rival Solwhit four times out of five and the result never looked in doubt this time.

Paddy Power said: “Hurricane Fly has well and truly proved that he is the King of the Irish hurdlers. But will he become the master of Europe on March 15 when he meets the cream of the English, including reigning champion Binocular?”

Hurricane Fly 1-2 For Irish Champion Hurdle

The big race of the day on Sunday is the Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown, where Hurricane Fly will start long odds on.

Hurricane Fly Odds On For Sundays Irish Champion

An excellent article in the Irish Times puts things in to perspective. Just five are set to line up for this weekend’s €110,000 highlight, but the phrase “small-but-select” could have been coined for them. Hurricane Fly and his old rival Solwhit are six-time Grade One winners, while Thousand Stars is a Cheltenham Festival winner. Voler La Vedette has yet to score at the top level, but she probably represents a greater threat than Sublimity, who is now very much in the veteran stage.

To be fair Hurricane Fly should win this readily and stake a claim for the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham in a few weeks time. 1-2 is very short. Not a working man’s price but those wanting a quick return wont find any bank paying 50% !

Hurricane Fly will win and win easily, but this is one to watch with an eye on the Champion Hurdle!

Elsewhere on the card, Bobs Worth is a 20/1 shot with totesport for the Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival after winning a race of the same name this afternoon.

Hurricane Flys to Champion Hurdle favouritism at Fairyhouse

Stan James cut Zaidpour from 11s to 9/2 for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle after his fluent success in the Grade 1 Royal Bond at Fairyhouse earlier today. He is 6/1 for the Neptune at the Cheltenham Festival but we believe he is more likely to go for Tuesday’s curtain raiser.

Head of PR Charlie McCann: ” Whilst his hurdling may not have been as fluent as Cue Card’s last Saturday we think Zaidpour is a real threat to last season’s Champion Bumper winner and Cue Card v Zaidpour would get the Festival off to a wonderful start.”

Hurricane Fly made a tremendous reappearance to deny his old rival Solwhit again in a thrilling finish to the Bar One Racing Hatton’s Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse.

The talented duo were locked in battle from the final flight but just as at Punchestown in April, Hurricane Fly (11-4) came out on top – but only after a hard-fought tussle.

He was completing a quick double on the card for trainer Willie Mullins and jockey Paul Townend after their success in the previous race with the smart Zaidpour.

Aitmatov made the running, with the two principals tucked away in midfield, until last year’s winner Oscar Dan Dan took it up briefly.

Solwhit then made his bid two out but he was soon joined by Hurricane Fly and the pair treated racegoers to a battle royal with the latter getting home by a length and a half. Voler La Vedette was third.
