I will be at Beverley for the afternoon and am hoping for some bright sunshine. On a gorgeous summers day Beverley is highly recommend. We will follow the men in form this afternoon..

In the First its Mark Johnston who had a great Royal Ascot and his horses continue in great form, which is a big positive as far as Rock of Love (2.15) is concerned.

This is a very moderate contest, by any standards, and represents the best chance yet for the son of Rock of Gibraltar to score. A modicum of his Dad’s ability will be more than enough to win this! The step up in trip to 7 furlongs should suit perfectly and the good to firm ground will be ideal for him. Going French has a higher official rating but Rock of Love should be much better at seven furlongs.

The jockey to follow in form is Darryl Holland who has notched up no fewer than 13 winners in the last 14 days, five of them in one night at Musselburgh last week. He has once again landed a good book of rides at the East Yorkshire venue this afternoon and though I hope he draws a blank in the first his mount in the 2.45 looks booked for the winners enclosure. I can not see this one getting beaten.

They All Laughed looks a class above these and should have no problem winning a poor claimer and is a very good bet today. Not the best of the day though, that is Summer Dancer (3.15).

Summer Dancer could be very well in at the weights, he carries a six pounds penalty following a good win at Musselburgh last week and steps up an extra half furlong. This time last year for David Elsworth he was running with credit off a mark of 81 and could have plenty in hand if recapturing that ability. There is no reason why he should not prevail again, comfortably!

I hope the winners flow, the drinks certainly will be!

Philip Robinson holds All The Aces at Pontefract…

After Royal Ascot Sunday is a day to take it easy and catch our breath. There is a race though at Pontefract that would not be out of place at Royal Ascot. The Pontefract Castle Stakes is a listed event which has attracted a quality field of eight with the lowest mark being 104.

Pontefract deserve much credit for the prize money that they offer, a policy that is often, but not always, rewarded with very good fields. All the Aces (3.40) is well named in the context of this race and should put up a good show. He ran well at Newbury last time, going down by half a length, drawing clear of third place horse by eight lengths.  The stable form would be a worry though with Michael Jarvis’ horses not quite firing this week but I do think All the Aces is good enough to win this over a trip that will suit ideally.

They call Philip Robinson the master tactician, so lets hope that proves to be the case today!

The highlight of the day is the Golden Jubilee Stakes at 3.45 which is an international affair, but there is some great supporting races to get stuck in to.

2:30 Chesham Stakes (listed) (2yo, Class 1, 7f, 17 runners)

A difficult race to kick off the day with a 17 runner group 2 event. The 7f listed event for 2 year-olds is never easy to solve and this is no exception. Wesley Ward runs Honor in Peace but the one to beat is Beethoven trained by Aidan O’Brien who is easily the top rated and is an 11/10 shot. Jimmy Fortune gets the ride and could have a Royal Ascot winner aboard this son of Derby winner Oratorio.

A decent group 2 where Ryan Moore could have another winner for Sir Michael Stoute aboard Doctor Fremantle who we backed at Chester. The 4 year-old won the Huxley Stakes last time and can land this one. He will have to beat Campanologist of Godolphin but I think he will. I really like Doctor Fremantle and will be backing him to win.

The feature race of the day and an international affair. I am with Nathan Lynch here who thinks Sacred Kingdom is the best bet for this competitive sprint. (click to read a full analysis of the Golden Jubilee) Takeover Target is a non-runner now but the international make-up is still there and Sacred Kingdom is trained in Hongkong can beat the South African trained JJ The Jet Plane.

5:35 Queen Alexandra Stakes Conditions Race (4yo+, Class 2, 2m 5f 159y, 12 runners)

A marathon to close the Royal Ascot meeting of 2009 where there is a good bet in this lucky last in the shape of Amerigo. The Jarvis stable have not had a winner here this year and can get one on the board with a horse who was second to Patkai at last years Royal meeting. He finished strongly in the Chester Cup and can go well over this longer trip. We strongly fancy this one.

Another big day in store at Royal Ascot. We have already previewed day three at Royal Ascot, click here. The big race of the day is the Gold Cup in which Yeats will be going for a fourth consecutive Gold Cup.

Timeform have evaluated the Gold Cup, interestingly;

Yeats goes for an historic fourth consecutive Gold Cup win at Ascot tomorrow and, despite running a shocker on his reappearance at Navan in April, Timeform are keeping the faith with the eight-year-old.

And so are the Betfair punters, who have installed him as the [3.25] favourite for the Ascot staying crown.

Timeform relate that he ran an amazing four stone below form at Navan, but still have him 5lb clear of Thursday’s opposition.

Timeform spokesman Kieran Packman explained: “The Gold Cup revolves around Yeats, there’s no doubting that, as he bids for an unprecedented fourth success.

“A replication of the form shown in any of his previous three wins will be good enough, but the fact he’s available at the price he is obviously stems from his uncharacteristically dismal reappearance.

“On that occasion, on heavy ground, he ran some four stone below his best, by some way his worst performance since disappointing in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud way back in 2005.

“Given stamina/well-being concerns surround Eastern Anthem, who’s second top-rated on his Nad Al Sheba win in March, and Geordieland is held by Yeats on all three previous meetings, Yeats strikes us as well worth keeping faith with at current odds.”

Its the stuff on nightmares today. With only a week until Royal Ascot, this week is the diet before the week of indulgence! I have a shortlist but not much in the way of major wagers today.

Chester Looks Very Difficult for Punters

At Redcar..

Officially Redcar is a seaside town, however the view from the racecourse is dominated by chemical plants and industrial clouds bellowing from huge chimneys. That said I can’t help but love racing at the Teeside venue and will be there today to back a horse I think may land a bit of a touch.

The Redcar straight mile championship is a good series with decent prize money that culminates in a valuable televised 9Channel 4) final  at the end of the season.  The journey towards the big prize kicks-off this afternoon for Dream Lodge (3.35) in the maile handicap who is making his debut for the Richard Fahey yard. The drop in the handicap and with Frederik Tylicki’s  five pounds claim it should mean that Dream Lodge turns out to be a well handicapped horse today.

The Richard Fahey stable are flying and it looks as though this will be another horse, as so many do, to improve for the switch to the Malton trainer.  I expect to see steady market support today for the former James Given inmate so I have taken the early price, remember you get Best Odds Guaranteed, so if it drifts you get the bigger SP.

I also like Luc Jordan (4.45) who was a close second last time and should break his maiden today at Redcar.



At Salisbury…

Aromatic (3.55, Salisbury) was one that we gave you last time she ran at Lingfield where she won in workman like fashion. Not impressively but quite easily. That was from a handiap mark of 78 and she is back to turf today running from only a five pounds higher mark. John Gosden still has her entered in next weeks Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot which looks a remote possibility given her rating but suggests that she has shown quite a lot at home. She looks a filly that likes to do the bear minimum which Jimmy Fortune, who takes over from Richard Mullen, will have to overcome with his usual no nonesense style.

I think Aromatic, who is an improving filly, is well weighted to complete the hat-trick today.



At Southwell….

Jumping at Southwell where I have two on the list. 7.30 Southwell  Tony McCoy has been booked by the McCain yard for Empress Orchid who should win. Two career starts under National Hunt rules have yielded 2 seconds and it should be a 1 with a win in this maiden hurdle.

At 8.30 Mizen Ravnen is tough and consistent and has a big chance of winning tonight, although the race looks tricky. Roses in the 9.00 looks the good thing of the day for the Swinbank team who farm thse NH flat races.

Chester just looks a nightmare!

Ask Wins at York and now runs at Epsom

2 Group 1′s, a Listed and a Group 3…Just for Starters

One non-runner and an easy winner made it a pretty good day for us yesterday which was just an hor ‘douvres before today’s five star banquet of racing. Today we will look at every race on the top class Epsom card and summarise our best bets of the day below.

1.40 Diomed Stakes- Group 3

Eight runners but the clear form pick is Confront from Sir Michael Stoutes stable with Champion Ryan Moore aboard. He won a handicap at Newmarket and is now stepped up in class. Michael Stoute gradually steps up his horses and here again is one that could be better than this grade. Back Confornt to Win.

2.10 – 1 mile Handicap

A trappy race in which we recommend a minimal investment. Plumb Pudding won well last time out and is a tentative investment.

2.45 – The Coronation Cup – Group 1

The group 1 coronation cup (2.45) is as competitive as it is interesting with a field of 8 very good runners all of whom have realistic winning chances. Last year’s Oaks winner Look Here returns to action and there are some proven group one performers as well as some improving types who could be anything. This is a really hard puzzle for punters to solve. I am torn between Ask and Duncan, but think I will side with the improver.

That one is Duncan who John Gosden has stepped up from a handicap, to listed company and now he is straight in at the top level. There are plenty of pattern races which would be far less competitive for him sowe can assume that Gosden must think Duncan is pretty good. The way he won last time at Ascot, when we were on him big time, suggested that he had plenty left in reserve and he will need every last bit of those reserves against such quality opposition. 3.25 1m 2f Handicap

Another competitive handicap and one in which we will not be having a bet. This is the hardest race on the card and will keep our powder dry for the main event…

4.05 The Oaks Group 1

I have already advised Sariska following a very impressive win in the Musidora Stakes at York. This daughter of Pivotal stretched well clear of a quality field showing that she is definitely a high class performer who will be better for today’s step up in trip. The last eight winners of the Musidora have been beaten at Epsom but this is a route her trainer has successfully followed before.


Michael Bell won an Epsom classic with Motivator, in 2007, who he got ready perfectly for the big day and backers can be sure that Sariska will be trained to the second for the big race. Although lightly raced Sariska ticks all the right boxes and I think she will win the Oaks in good style and then more group one races in the future. I am sure Sariska is a very good filly. Sariska is likely to be well supported in the market and I have taken the early price which looks very good value. Back Sariska to Win and take an early best odds guaranteed price with Canbet.com

4.50 – The Surrey Stakes- Listed

Another tricky race with 9 runners. The handicapper says that Nasri is the best horse in the race. Hopefully Jamie Spencer will be on a high after the Oaks. The one that I find interesting is Mastoora who William Haggas throws straight into Listed company following a folkstone maiden win for which she was given a mark of 82. William Haggas is no mug and he must think that she is much better than the handicapper does. My advice is to back Mastoora to win. Take an early price with Best odds Guaranteed with Canbet.

5.25- 7f Handicap

This is a very hard race. A small bet to finish off the day on Shamwari Lodge who is in good form and could complete the hat-trick for Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes.

Great Day Yesterday,Same Again Please…

Everaard was second at Warwick yesterday but the conduct of first past the post Bob Stock was criminal. What a great thing Betfair is, I was able to lay off my bet at 1.14 and didn’t have to worry about the stewards enquiry.

Everaard was duly awarded the race completing a clean sweep, all three bets won. I hope you made a good few quid!

The Lay got beaten too, we are 100% for the month, and a further Lay will be coming your way today.

Today..

This week is a great week with the Chester meeting looking good. Today by comparison is poor. There are few decent bets today, at decent prices anyhow.

Tony McCoy looks assured of a winner at Fakenham aboard No Panic, but is too sgort to back, far too short.He also  rides Treaty Flyer (2.20) which should win at better odds. With McCoy aboard this looks an easy opportunity for a quick double after winning a better race easily last Sunday. Treaty Flyer should win this to get us off to a flyer Today. My Nap…

Royal Dignitary (3.00) at Southwell is my Nap and should win this weak all-weather claimer easily. Dandy ran him  in a hot handicap last time won by Forgotten Voice at Kempton, (and we know how good that one is don’t we?)

Back in a claimer he may be a 9 year-old but has a very good record at Southwell and should outclass these today.

Royal Dignitary should win this easily.
