Vettel On Pole for Silverstone British Grand Prix

Red Bull Racing were in a league of their own as Sebastian Vettel claimed a stunning pole position for Sunday’s British Grand Prix.

Vettel, who started on pole at Silverstone last year on his way to a dominant win, got the better of team-mate Mark Webber in a heated battle for supremacy, the German posting a quickest time of one minute 29.615 seconds.

Hopes of a British win remain intact with Lewis Hamilton wringing the best out of his ill-handling McLaren to take fourth, but there was misery for his team-mate Jenson Button, who could manage only 14th.

Despite a shocker is qualifying William Hill are still seeing money for the British pair with Lewis Hamilton a 12/1 shot and Button an 80/1 outsider. A McLaren 1-2 is out to 200/1, whilst a Red Bull 1-2 even money. The British drivers will need some help and Hills offer 40/1 that the Red Bulls collide taking at least one out.

“The British Grand Prix is always the biggest of the year but we could have done with the British drivers being a little more competitive,” said Hill’s spokesman Rupert Adams.

William Hill British Grand Prix: 8/13 Vettel, 9/4 Webber, 7/1 Alonso, 12/1 Hamilton, 50/1 Rosberg, 66/1 Kubica, 66/1 Massa, 80/1 Button, 100/1 Schumacher

In the run up to this weekend’s British Grand Prix, William Hill have seen a number of large bets for either Red Bull driver to start on pole, these bets include a five figure wager. As a result Hills offer 4/7 that a Red Bull car will be at the front of the grid come Sunday and 6/4 that it is a McClaren. Hills are offering 7/1 that we have a British 1-2, Hamilton is 3/1 to win his home GP and Jenson Button is 13/2.

“All the money has been on Red Bull to dominate qualifying, but interestingly enough, the Brits are are well backed to win the main event,” said Hills spokesman Joe Crilly.

World Cup Betting Tips

England play in World CUp

With £50million expected to be wagered on Saturday’s Epsom Derby, the bookies fear another win for the hot favourite Jan Vermeer and top Irish duo Aiden O’Brian and Johnny Murtagh will paint them in to a corner for the summer.

But the Derby pales in to insignificance compared to the FIFA World Cup in South Africa starting on June 11th, where more than £1billion is expected to be gambled on all the individual matches. Fans of England, currently 13-2 third favourites behind Spain and Brazil are desperately hoping Fabio Capello’s men can end their forty-four years of hurt, while Irish, Scottish, and Welsh fans will be hoping their World Cup drought continues. Racing Diary will be here with daily audio World Cup podcasts with Bookmakers YouWin.com

The supporting card for the summer is sizzling. Five days of Royal Ascot (June 15-19) will generate another £500m, quickly followed by Wimbledon SW19, where Murray mania will be another multi-million pound hangover for bookies. We will also be doing Royal Ascot Podcasts every day, with expert Horseracing Tips from betting experts.

Tiger Woods, arguably the best known sportsman in the world, will be aiming to win his first major tournament since his comeback when he ventures over to St. Andrews in Scotland for the British Open in July, whilst the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button will battle out at British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Cricket fans have both the Ashes and the test series against Pakistan to enjoy.

The summer of sport is set to boost a raft of businesses from memorabilia makers to the brewing industry, but Britain’s bookmakers are dreading a summer of British Success.

David Hood, Director of Public Relations for William Hill, said “It’s a double-edged sword for the bookies. On one hand we are rubbing our hands in anticipation of the biggest two months in the history of sport for the betting industry.” He continued, “On the other we know that a string of British success or fancied contenders could be our worst nightmare. Put all the ingredients together from the Epsom Derby, the World Cup, Wimbledon, Royal Ascot, the British Open, the British Grand Prix et al – and we expect that betting mad Brits will turnover in excess of £2 billion this summer.”

Of course, if you’re not interested in sport, then one thing you could do is top up your tan. The met office are expecting temperatures to sore during the months of June and July, and bookies William Hill are offering odds of just 5-1 for the temperature in Britain to soar over 100F. Formula One Row Heads to Court

Formula One’s governing body the FIA is to take legal action against eight teams who plan to break away to form their own championship.

Latest from Sky News: Ferrari, McLaren, Brawn GP, Renault, Toyota, BMW Sauber, Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso have all declined to enter F1 for 2010 ahead of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

The FIA has warned of a ‘financial arms race’ within the sport over the split. The development comes after the Formula One Teams’ Association (FOTA), failed to reach a compromise with FIA president Max Mosley over plans for a £40m budget cap. The FIA said:

“The actions of FOTA as a whole, and Ferrari in particular, amount to serious violations of law including wilful interference with contractual relations, direct breaches of Ferrari’s legal obligations and a grave violation of competition law.”

Earlier, the governing body said:

“We are disappointed but not surprised by FOTA’s inability to reach a compromise in the best interests of the sport. It is clear that elements within FOTA have sought this outcome throughout the prolonged period of negotiation and have not engaged in the discussions in good faith. The FIA cannot permit a financial arms race in the championship nor can the FIA allow FOTA to dictate the rules of Formula One.”

The FIA had issued a deadline of Friday for teams to enter next year’s championship unconditionally.

The 2010 competition now consists of Williams and Force India, along with the three new outfits – USF1, Campos and Manor. The split was announced ahead of the British Grand Prix, which takes place at Silverstone on Sunday.

FOTA said it had tried to work with the FIA and Bernie Ecclestone, who holds the commercial rights to F1, to “develop and improve the sport” since forming last September. But it added in a statement: “It has become clear, however, the teams cannot continue to compromise on the fundamental values of the sport and have declined to alter their original conditional entries to the 2010 world championship.

“These teams, therefore, have no alternative other than to commence the preparation for a new championship which reflects the values of its participants and partners.”
