Horseracing Betting Update – Binocular Fails To Impress

Binocular has been eased to 3/1 (from 11/4) at the head of the market for the Champion Hurdle and Oscar Whisky cut to 11/1 (from 14/1) after the two Nicky Henderson-trained horses won their respective Champion Hurdle trials this afternoon.

Horseracing Betting

Henderson Has Champion Hurdle Key

Oscar Whisky was undoubtedly the more impressive of the two in winning the Welsh Champion Hurdle at Ffos Las, barely coming off the bride to record an eight length victory. Binocular also won relatively easily at Sandown but failed to impress AP McCoy who was similarly downbeat after the horse won the same race twelve months ago.

“Although both Binocular and Oscar Whisky posted reasonably facile successes this afternoon, the former wasn’t as impressive as anticipated and this adds another dimension to what is already a fascinating renewal of the Champion Hurdle,” said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

Medermit has been cut to 6/1 (from 10/1) for the Arkle after running out the game winner for the totepool Challengers Novices’ Chase by half a length from Captain Chris. The latter has been cut to 9/1 (from 12/1) for the Jewson Novices’ Chase at the Festival with Medermit similarly trimmed to 7/1 (from 9/1) for the same race.

The Hitman On Saturday, Free Horseracing Tips, 4 Feb

The Hitman

Free Horseracing Tips on Saturday from The Hitman.

The big meeting is at Sandown on Saturday with a high quality jumps card. There is also the Welsh Champion Hurdle at Ffos Las with supporting cards at Wetherby (jumps) and a flat all-weather fixture at Lingfield. The Hitman has all your free horseracing tips and analysis of the big action for Saturday……

Binocular (1:55 Sandown) has scared off any serious challenge and should win as he likes under AP McCoy. He won this on the way to the Champion Hurdle and we will not learn much if anything here. It is good to see that the Champion Hurdle winner in action, but he will do more at home!

Free Horseracing Tips

Binocular Can win easily at Sandown

Medermit (2:25) is the interesting runner in the Chellenger’s Novice Chase who will face a stiff challenge for some pretty unexposed chasers. He is the highest rated of these with a mark of 155 but the improver and one I side with is Rock Noir in the McManus colours, Rock Noir has progressed niceley but this is a proper test and I am of the view he will be more than up to it!

Lush Life (3:00) is favourite for the Heroes Handicap Hurdle for the Nicky Henderson yard who certainly had a fantastic month in January. David Bass is given the task here and crucially takes off five pounds, which is a tight handicap is a shrewd move by Henderson.  He has won 3 of his last four starts and was in my book at least, impressive when winning at Cheltenham last time. Sandown is a stiff finish so we know he has the stamina to finish strongly.

Theatrical Moment (3:35) is one I think is due to run a big race at Sandown. AP McCoy rides for Jonjo O’Neil and this is a horse with bags of ability. 7 wins from 20 starts show that and fresh after a break, with conditions to suit I would suggest that Theatrical Moment is a rock solid each-way bet. Amateur ridden last time at Cheltenham I would ignore that completely and expect better today.

Oscar Whiskey (2:40) Ffos Las is as much of a non event as Binocular. The Ffos Las owner owns this one so no prizes as to why he runs here. On ratings he is miles clear and will like Binocular have done more had he stayed at Seven Barrows for a Saturday morning piece of work. It may be worth doubling up Binocular and Oscar Whiskey, even then it wont pay much!

Good Luck from the Hitman!

Binocular

Binocular will not face Peddlers Cross

It was another winning day for Racing Diary readers with our bet of the day Advertisement winning for Jeremy Noseda.A busy day ahead on Thursday with four meetings in the UK and a meeting at Clonmel in Ireland.

Feet Of Fury (2:00 Southwell) has improved since converting to the Southwell fibre sand. She was an easy winner last month over this trip here and has been raised a mighty 11lb but despite that I am prepared to back her agaain.

Sail Home (3:00 Southwell) can make it doubles all round, and follow up on her maiden win over course and distance. From a mark of 65 in a weak looking race Sail Home should do just that and complete a fibresand double for Racing Diary readers.

It is a big weekend of racing on the way but sadly Peddlers Cross is “highly unlikely” to run this weekend after he was found to have developed a cough following a piece of work on Wednesday morning. Binocular will again have an easy race as he prepares to defend his Champion Hurdle Crown.

Binocular Entered at Sandown, Champion Hurdle Warm-Up

Champion Hurdle winner Binocular is amongst the six entries for Saturday’s Contenders Hurdle at Sandown. Not much of a field it has to be said! he will then head to Cheltenham for the Champion Hurdle.

Champion Hurdle

Champion Hurdle Winner

Binocular is owned by JP McManus whose racing manager Frank Berry said:

“I haven’t been told that he hasn’t been entered anyway. Nicky said straight after Kempton that he wanted to run him and everything has been fine since. Touch wood, ever since the Champion last year he’s been very consistent. I suppose he might come up against Peddlers Cross again and let’s see how they get on. Binocular is in good form and the plan is to go there.”

Donald McCain Keen To Take on Binocular!

Donald McCain told At The Races that he isn’t afraid to take on Champion Hurdler Binocular with Peddlers Cross a week on Saturday.

He was left frustrated by the abandonment of Haydock due to frost on Saturday, where his stable star was due to put his unbeaten record on the line in their Champion Hurdle trial. This is what he told Matt Chapman on At The Races this afternoon….

Binocular looked back to his best last time and will be in my view hard to beat at the Cheltenham Festival in March ! Still we will see!

Denman Can Land a Third Hennessy on Super Saturday at Newbury

Free Horseracing Tips

By Carl Harris

The Hitman cleaned up last Saturday and he is back to mark your card for the big meeting at Newbury on Saturday, Carl Harris says get on Denman for Hennessy Gold Cup glory….

Denman has dominated the Hennessy Gold Cup (3:05 Newbury) with jaw dropping performances that have even reduced his trainer to tiers. I firmly believe he will do it again on Saturday and I have taken the early prices, Denman is most definately the best bet of the day.

Were it not for health problems Denman could have dominated the game, but despite his heart problems there is no doubting his bravery, I absolutely love Denman but sentiment aside, I think his class will show. Paul Nicholls has said he has never been happier with Denman, that will do for me. Get on Denman, with Gold Cup winning jockey Sam Thomas in the plate. Take the early price about Denman.

Cheltenham Gold Cup 2010

Denman won in 2008 and 2009

The Fighting Fifth as been moved from Newcastle to Newbury and now goes off at 12:25 and Champion Hurdler, Binocular makes his reappearance in a race he should win, at odds-on there is no value but a nice double with Denman may be a good investment. He has some decent opponents but lets be honest he should have a stone in hand and win on the steel.

McCoy should complete a double with Big Buck’s (2:30 Newbury) who is quite simply a star and should literally win in a canter here. Another short price but this will give you a nice Brucie Bonus on your winnings, he is an absolute good thing.  Absolute certainty!

Last week there was plenty of value with Stagecoach pearl winning at 7/2, today with all the abandonments choice is a bit thin on the ground, so Denman is my cornerstone today. I do like Corner Stone at Newbury in the last (3:40) who can land a hat-trick and I think is well handicaped over fences. Definately worth a bet I think.

Worth a watch, Denman winning the Hennessy Gold Cup last Year…..

Nicky Henderson Confident For Binocular Return

Nicky Henderson expressed himself satisfied with the health of the Champion Hurdle favourite, Binocular, despite the five-year-old blowing hard at the end of a racecourse gallop yesterday morning.

“I’m happier with him now than I was last year, but that’s not to say something was obviously amiss back then,” the trainer said on Wednesday.

Binocular Can Land Fighting Fifth

“I wasn’t that confident going to Newcastle last year and I wouldn’t be again – it’s a very good race, as it should be, with Peddlers Cross and Starluck in there – but I do know Binocular is in very good form. Saturday is not the Champion Hurdle, it’s just the first step on the road to Cheltenham in March. My job is to make sure Binocular is fit and ready to defend his crown then but the stanjames.com Fighting Fifth Hurdle is the perfect place to start and provides a good route into the Christmas Hurdle,” he added.

A preview by Charlie McCann of Stan James

Sponsors Stan James have cut Peddlers Cross from 7/2 to 11/4 for Saturday’s Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle following support for the Donald McCain Festival winner and have eased Champion Hurdler Binocular from 5/6 to 10/11. The firm have also opened a book on whether this weekend’s big races at Newcastle and Newbury go ahead.

Head of PR Charlie McCann: ” The frost covers are due to go down at both tracks but will the weather allow the StanJames.com Fighting Fifth and Hennessy Gold Cup to go ahead? We suggest and hope yes and bet 4/11 the Fighting Fifth takes place at Newcastle on Saturday (2/1 no) and 4/9 the Hennessy takes place at Newbury on Saturday (13/8 no). Punters have latched on to Peddlers Cross for the Fighting Fifth and we have cut the Neptune Novices’ Hurdle winner to 11/4 from 7/2 in light of sustained support.”

It is also the Hennesy Gold Cup on Saturday, Can Denman carry top weight to a third victory?

Burton Port has been trimmed in the market for the Hennessy Gold Cup following the news that China Rock will miss the race and is now 7/1 (from 8/1) with totesport.

Looking ahead to the stanjames.com Fighting Fifth at Newcastle, trainer Robbie Hennessy has ruled former Champion Hurdler Sublimity out of the race which has seen the front two shorten at the head of the market.

Binocular is now the 4/5 favourite (from 5/6) with totesport whilst Peddlers Cross is the 5/2 second-favourite (from 11/4).

Binocular Gets Champion Hurdle Green Light as Geraghty Opts for Punjabi

Nicky Henderson has confirmed that Binocular will run in the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham on Tuesday. Third in the race last year, there had been a doubt about the participation of JP McManus’ six-year-old for some time following a couple of below-par efforts this season.

Tony McCoy rides Binocular in Champion Hurdle

Indeed, he had initially been ruled out of the race by Henderson on February 17 after suffering a muscle problem. But following a pleasing schooling session on Wednesday, he came through a gallop on Friday morning with flying colours. The recent Sandown scorer will be ridden by Tony McCoy.

Binocular will add a third string to the Champion Hurdle bow of the Seven Barrows handler, who will also be represented by the Barry Geraghty-ridden Punjabi and Zaynar, the mount of Andrew Tinkler. Binocular could finish only fifth in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle, but showed more promise when third in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton. He then won a three-runner race at Sandown but connections were not happy in the aftermath and he was ruled out of the Festival. Having gone back into training last week, Henderson is now satisfied that he should take his chance.

Punjabi…

Barry Geraghty has chosen to ride Punjabi in the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle. Nicky Henderson‘s stable jockey was aboard the gelding for his victory in the race 12 months ago and has stayed loyal despite having the option of partnering Zaynar.

The trainer confirmed riding plans for his three runners in the race, saying: “Binocular will be ridden by AP (McCoy), Barry (Geraghty) will ride Punjabi and Andrew Tinkler will now ride Zaynar.

“They are all very well and all three are pleasing me.”
