Can Grand Crus Beat Big Bucks?

Grand Crus was theimpressive 10 length winner of the Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham on Saturday, by 10 lengths. He will now take on Big Buck’s in the World Hurdle at The Cheltenham Festival in March. Game on!

Big Bucks off to Cheltenham

Speaking to reporters trainer David Pipe said; “Most dreams are shattered here but he’s done that exceptionally nicely, I’ve always held him in the highest regard and he’s proved it today. Today was the World Hurdle without Big Buck’s and let’s hope we both get there in good form.  I wouldn’t swap him for anything – even Big Buck’s.

Paddy Power cut Grand Crus from 10-1 to 3-1 and eased Big Buck’s out from 4-7 to 4-5. Last year the bookies let Big Buck’s go out to evens, as they were winning big at the Cheltenham Festival but this year maybe he has a genuine contender?

Certainly that was impressive and Grand Crus came up the hill powerfully, but he didn’t have Big Buck’s breathing down his neck. An unbeaten horse with such good form will be a very different proposition. The World Hurdle has been dominated by Big Buck’s and the young pretender could deny him another victory.

Would I take 4-5 about Big Buck’s now, no.  I would wait until the declarations are made before having a bet, but I think that this match will be close if it happens and 3-1 is some value for the World Hurdle, but I wouldn’t write off Big Buck’s not by any stretch of the imagination. I think he will be tough to beat, but if anyone can, Grand Crus is the one.

Game On!

Grand Crus Update………David Pipe says this morning;

“All is good with him. He ate up last night and he seems fine this morning, It’s every trainer’s and jockey’s dream to have a horse like him and that’s what we’re all in the job for. He’s still only a six-year-old and he’s lightly raced, so it’s very exciting. We went to Cheltenham full of hope, but you can’t expect a performance like that. He was going into Graded company for the first time, which is a lot different to running in handicaps, but he was extremely good. The ground in March will be what ever it’s going to be, but Cheltenham always do a good job watering. I think he is better on softer ground and he has a high knee action, but safe ground is all he really needs. The ground wasn’t that soft on Saturday and he certainly wasn’t too bad on it there. Let’s hope both he and Big Buck’s make it to Cheltenham in March and we can get our horse there in the same kind of form. If we finish second to Big Buck’s it will be a fantastic run and if we manage to beat him, it will be amazing.”

Big Bucks Tops World Hurdle Entries

Big Buck’s heads a field of 46 in his bid to reap yet another World Hurdle at Cheltenham, William Hill going 4-7 about Paul Nicholls’ eight-year-old, with betting without the favourite also available.

If successful in a third Championship staying event, Andy Stewart’s long-distance dominator could equal the record of the fantastic Inglis Drever, and record a monumental eleventh victory on the spin.

In a bid to upset the division, Nicky Henderson relies on the progressive Oscar Whisky, 2009 runner-up Punchestowns and 2009’s Triumph Hurdle-winning Zaynar, whereas Alan King fields exciting pair Karabak and Bensalem.

The David Pipe-trained Grand Crus has been the subject of significant support since his Cheltenham and Haydock routs, with Irish hope Mikael D’Haguenet returning to the smaller obstacles after two winless starts over fences.

Lucy Rhodes, spokeswoman for William Hill, said, ‘Big Buck’s was the only one of four to have returned from Prestbury last season with his Championship banker status intact. He’s since been hot fav for the hat-trick – can anyone crack the Stewarts’ staying stranglehold this time?’

World Hurdle: 4-7 Big Buck’s, 8-1 Quevega, 10-1 Karabak, 12-1 Grand Crus, Oscar Whisky, Punchestowns, 14-1 Mourad, Solwhit, Zaynar, 16-1 Any Given Day, Mikael D’Haguenet, 20-1 Bensalem, Celestial Halo, Fiveforthree, Khyber Kim, 25-1 Ashkazar, Luska Lad, Organisateur, Shinrock Paddy, Thousand Stars, 33-1 Fair Along, Powerstation, Restless Harry, Souffleur, Spirit River, Walkon, 40-1 Cristal Bonus, 50-1 Berties Dream, Beshabar, Blackstairmountain, Catch Me, James De Vassy, Shalone 66-1 BAR (EW 1/4 1,2,3)

Denman Can Land a Third Hennessy on Super Saturday at Newbury

Free Horseracing Tips

By Carl Harris

The Hitman cleaned up last Saturday and he is back to mark your card for the big meeting at Newbury on Saturday, Carl Harris says get on Denman for Hennessy Gold Cup glory….

Denman has dominated the Hennessy Gold Cup (3:05 Newbury) with jaw dropping performances that have even reduced his trainer to tiers. I firmly believe he will do it again on Saturday and I have taken the early prices, Denman is most definately the best bet of the day.

Were it not for health problems Denman could have dominated the game, but despite his heart problems there is no doubting his bravery, I absolutely love Denman but sentiment aside, I think his class will show. Paul Nicholls has said he has never been happier with Denman, that will do for me. Get on Denman, with Gold Cup winning jockey Sam Thomas in the plate. Take the early price about Denman.

Cheltenham Gold Cup 2010

Denman won in 2008 and 2009

The Fighting Fifth as been moved from Newcastle to Newbury and now goes off at 12:25 and Champion Hurdler, Binocular makes his reappearance in a race he should win, at odds-on there is no value but a nice double with Denman may be a good investment. He has some decent opponents but lets be honest he should have a stone in hand and win on the steel.

McCoy should complete a double with Big Buck’s (2:30 Newbury) who is quite simply a star and should literally win in a canter here. Another short price but this will give you a nice Brucie Bonus on your winnings, he is an absolute good thing.  Absolute certainty!

Last week there was plenty of value with Stagecoach pearl winning at 7/2, today with all the abandonments choice is a bit thin on the ground, so Denman is my cornerstone today. I do like Corner Stone at Newbury in the last (3:40) who can land a hat-trick and I think is well handicaped over fences. Definately worth a bet I think.

Worth a watch, Denman winning the Hennessy Gold Cup last Year…..

Thursdays Horseracing Tips, Aintree, 8 April

Cheltenham Festival Betting Tips

By Carl Harris

The Grand National meeting kicks off at Aintree on Thursday and what a great card we have to kick off the festival. Two of the big Cheltenham winners are in action, Big Bucks and Imperial Commander. The card is choc-full of quality all the way through.

I have also had a real good luck at the Grand National and I think on balance I will back Mon Mome to win the race again, as he did last year (at 100/1 too). The run in the Gold Cup where he finished third I thought was of the highest order and I will go for a back to back winner of the Grand National in 2010. Todays racing is Live on BBC2.

Though the flat season is now in full bloom we must focus on Aintree for the next few days, then its full steam ahead on the flat. Here are your free horseracing tips for Aintree at Thursday;

2:00 Aintree, Big Bucks- Win. Ok so not a backable price, but if you want to nick a few quid them Big Bucks is the horse to do it. I had to dig myself out of a hole at Cheltenham with Big Bucks who was even money, amazing. Today he faces a lesser field than at Aintree and with Time for Rupert out he has 23 pounds in hand on official ratings and should win readily. Big Bucks won this last year which shows that coming here after Cheltenham is no worry, and he could win this hard held on the steel.

Free Horseracing Tips

Big Bucks can show his class at Aintree

2:35 Aintree, Super Kenny- Win. Super Kenny won easy as you like first time out. Regular readers will know we backed Super Kenny to win the Triumph Hurdle, but he never made it to Cheltenham. Today he faces a stiff test against the Fred Winter winner Sanctuaire and the Triumph Hurdle second Barizan, with McCoy now in the saddle. Me Voici is also a decent type but I am backing Super Kenny. Nicky Henderson has made no secret of the regard he holds Super Kenny in and I think he will be a decent price. I am sticking with Super Kenny, and if he wins I will roo the 33/1 I had ante-post for the Triumph Hurdle.

Free Horseracing Tips

Imperial Commander

3:10 Aintree, Imperial Commander- Win. The Gold Cup winner will  turn up here and should earn his owners an easy £85,000. With only five runners it would be a huge shock if anything here was good enough to trouble the Gold Cp winner. One to watch, and one for the multi-bets.

4:55 Aintree, Somersby- Win. We had Somersby in the Arkle at Cheltenham but he could only finish second. Robert Thornton takes the ride again and a repeat of the Cheltenham performance should be good enough. The Nightingale is the horse to worry about, having skipped Cheltenham to come here fit and fresh.

A great day of action. I really like the look of today’s card and cant wait to get stuck in.

Big Bucks To Run at Aintree on Thursday

Big Buck’s will face eight rivals as he bids to secure back-to-back victories in Thursday’s BGC Partners Liverpool Hurdle at Aintree.

Big Bucks can show his class at Aintree

The seven-year-old heads to Aintree off the back of a brilliant second success in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, and is sure to be long odds-on as he chases an eighth successive win.

World Hurdle runner-up Time For Rupert and Tidal Bay, who was a disappointing seventh, are also declared to run.

Emma Lavelle’s Bouggler returns to the scene of his finest hour having won a Grade Two novice event at this meeting 12 months ago.

Kayf Aramis, Possol, Silver Token, Souffleur and Wolf Moon complete the field.

Cheltenham Festival Betting Tips

Carl Harris @ Cheltenham

What a brilliant day at Cheltenham, working for SunTalk radio. I had the pleasure of speaking to some of the biggest names in racing, not least AP McCoy.

He told us he had a great chance and duely won the Ryanair Chase on Albtertas Run. Albertas Run, the Jonjo O’Neill-trained winner of the 2008 RSA Chase, has struggled for consistency throughout his career but is never better than on drying ground and his abundance of stamina proved superior in the two-mile-five-furlong showpiece. McCoy was brilliant again! Poquelin was second, my bet in the race.

We also spoke to Racing UK pundit Graham Cunningham, Ferdy Murphy, Denis O’Regan, Claude Charlet and we had Clare Balding, Ally McCoist and former World Darts Champion Denis Priestley. It was a brilliant day. But what we needed, what i needed was a big winner.

We got back in the game with a huge win for Big Bucks today at Cheltenham, what a day it was! The bookies went 5/6 on Big Bucks a horse that was trading at long odds on all winter. Step up Ruby Walsh and Big Bucks.

And the crowd saved their biggest cheer of the week for the staying hurdle champion as he followed up his win of 12 months ago to maintain his unbeaten record over timber in Britain.

Picture

Bookies are claiming day three to them;

Now its the Gold Cup on Friday. Its Kauto Star and Big Bucks. We have said all that needs to be said, now we need a good price! Its Kauto Star all the way for me! Kauto Star will win the Gold Cup!

Kauto Star to Win!

Day Two to the Bookies, But I’m Not Cross!

Cheltenham Festival Betting Tips

Carl Harris @ Cheltenham

A day to remember for the Bookmakers at least at Cheltenham

I had Peddlers Cross each way at 7/1 in the Neptune Novice Hurdle, which basically paid for the day. I am simply amazed at the results today.

While Ginger dominated the Grand National through the 1970s with legendary three-time winner Red Rum, McCain jnr has made Cheltenham his own playground since taking over the family licence in 2006.

We spoke to some top guests today at Cheltenham including Sam Wahley-Cohen the jockey of Long Run, but I think we put the curse on him as he was beaten. Weapon’s Amnesty and an unflinching Davy Russell spoiled what appeared to be an RSA Chase already gift-wrapped for Nicky Henderson at the Cheltenham Festival on Wednesday.

Master Minded was dethroned in the Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase as Big Zeb expunged his fall of 12 months earlier to land the highlight on day two of the Cheltenham Festival.

When the 40-1 bumper winner bolted up in the last it proved it was just not the punters day. I enjoyed the day, we had Claude Charlet on the show to talk about French horses and we spoke to Statto as well as trainer Pat Murphy who was a good guy to have on.

All in all it was a good day, but tomorrow we need a few winners! Big Bucks should be the one to win and win well!

Big Bucks Heads World Hurdle Entries

Defending champion Big Buck’s could face up to 15 rivals in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle at Cheltenham on Thursday following the confirmation stage.

Cheltenham Festival 2010

Big Bucks Won The World Hurdle in 2009

Paul Nicholls’ seven-year-old was a brilliant winner of the Grade One contest 12 months ago and has continued in a similar vein this season with two bloodless successes at Newbury. Karabak was second in the latter of those races, the Long Walk Hurdle, and looks set to reoppose at the Festival for Alan King, who also has former champion hurdler Katchit to call upon.

Last year’s Supreme Novices’ Hurdle favourite Cousin Vinny looks set to return to the smaller obstacles after a brief stint over fences, while his trainer Willie Mullins has also left in Mourad. Mouse Morris’ 2006 Cheltenham Gold Cup hero War Of Attrition has been enjoying a fantastic season in Ireland and looks set to return to the scene of his finest hour. Other entries from the Emerald Isle are Ebadiyan, Oscar Dan Dan, Powerstation and Royal And Regal.

Howard Johnson’s recent Cleeve Hurdle winner Tidal Bay is one of the more viable contenders, while Cape Tribulation, Fair Along, Lie Forrit, Sentry Duty and Time For Rupert complete the entries.

Big Buck’s Now 4-7 For World Hurdle at Cheltenham

Big Buck’s once again stamped his class with an authoritative display in the Long Walk Hurdle at Newbury. Last season’s World Hurdle hero was sent off at 1-2 to record his sixth successive victory over timber, but there were a few anxious moments as Ruby Walsh became animated turning for home.

Big Buck’s affirmed his position as a ‘punting banker’ for next March’s Cheltenham festival when taking the rescheduled Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury this afternoon.

Big Bucks showed his class in Long Walk Hurdle

Despite tough conditions, the Andy Stewart-owned hurdler destroyed the opposition in the three-mile contest, causing bookmakers William Hill to slash his odds for the World Hurdle to 4-7 from even money.  Pretender to the crown Diamond Harry could only finish third in the race and was eased to 7-1 from 6-1, whilst Karabak’s solid second-place saw Hills trim his odds to 7-1 from 12-1. Nick Williams – trainer of Diamond Harry- has now highlighted a possible tilt at the RSA Chase for his charge – for which Hills have re-quoted the gelding at odds of 12-1.

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill, said: ‘’Big Buck’s now appears absolutely bombproof for the Festival after today’s performance, and is a certainty to appear on every punters ‘banker’ list for March.’’

In other ante-post news Solwhit now matches Zaynar as joint 9-2 favourite for the Champion Hurdle after taking the Leopardstown December Hurdle today, whilst What A Friend’s victory in the Lexus Chase saw his odds for the Gold Cup tumble to 20-1 from 33-1, with his Hennessy victor Denman also trimmed to 2-1 from 9-4. Champion trainer Paul Nicholls now rates as a 1/3 chance to saddle the winner of next March’s Gold Cup for a fourth successive year.
