Saturdays Horseracing Tips, 20 February

Free Horseracing Tips

By Carl Harris

Saturday could be a great day then again it could be a disaster! There are four scheduled jumps meetings, all of which will have inspections in the morning.

Lingfield is the only card guranteed to go ahead, so it will be fingers crossed, certainlt at Haydock, Wincanton and Ascot.

Saturdays Going;

  • Ascot - Soft-Good to Soft in places (Prec Inspection 6.30am).
  • Haydock - Chase: Heavy; Hurdle: Soft-Heavy in plcs (Prec Inspection 9.00am).
  • Lingfield - Standard
  • Uttoxeter - Heavy (Inspection 8.00am).
  • Wincanton - Heavy (Inspection 8am).

I am going to assume that all is fine tomorrow and here are my Free Horseracing Tips for Saturday.

1:55 Haydock, Me Voici- Win. This is a really interesting race with the Triumph Hurdle only three weeks away. Me Voici was a really impressive winner at Chepstow last time when beating Sang Bleu by 10 lengths. I think that form is well ahead of anything else here and as such he can win here and put himself in the Triumph Hurdle picture.

3:00 Haydock, Adams Island- Win. I think this is a decent type who can land a three timer with Tony McCoy onboard. His win last time at Newbury was very impressive, winning going away, to get the better of a well regarded Paul Nicholls horse. The price may not be great however, but I really like this one and will have a decent bet.

3:15 Ascot, Planet Of Sound- Win. This was won by Voy Por Ustedes last year and though there are no big names on show this time round I think it will be a good race. It revolves around Planet Of Sound and Alberta Run. When the two met last time it was Albertas Run who came out on top but with six pounds better terms and two below par runs from Albertas Run I am siding with Planet of Sound, although it will be a close one in my view. Planet of Sound is the fresh horse and at the weights is my bet here.

Albertas Run lines up at Ascot

Betfair Chase – Ascot 3.15pm(William Hill bet): 2-1 Planet of Sound, 3-1 Herecomesthetruth, 9-2 Albertas Run, 13-2 Oh Crick, 7-1 Monet’s Garden, 16-1 The Sawyer (EW 1/4 1,2)

3:35 Haydock, Dream Alliance- Win and Place. This is the Blue Square Handicap Chase which is highly competitive, to say the least. Last time out he won the Coral Welsh National, with Silver By Nature and Le Beau Bai behind.  Although he has been raised nine pounds by the handicapper I am prepared to back him to defy that and win again. testing conditions are right up his street, a win and place bet is recommended.

John Oxx Says Sea the Stars will be fine over Eclipse Distance..

BRIAN O’CONNOR Racing Correspondent of The Irish Times;

Sea The Stars fine ahead of Eclipse

Sea The Stars, Coral-Eclipse, Saturday

Sea The Stars, Coral-Eclipse, Saturday

For Racing Diary reader who are on at 11-10, John Oxx’s words will be like music to their ears!

SEA THE STARS is dropping back to 10 furlongs for Saturday’s Coral Eclipse Stakes at Sandown but despite that his trainer John Oxx yesterday stressed his belief that the Epsom Derby winner has proved himself over a mile and a mile and a half and dismissed suggestions otherwise as “spin” from Coolmore Stud.

The Curragh trainer stated his happiness about Sea The Stars’s stamina in an interview yesterday and also said that a faster pace at Epsom last month would have suited his dual-Classic winning colt better. There was widespread criticism of the tactics employed by Aidan O’Brien’s team at Epsom where the runner-up Fame And Glory was generally regarded as being unsuited to a lack-lustre early tempo. The Montjeu colt impressively won last Sunday’s Irish Derby off a much stronger pace.

Sea The Stars missed the Curragh Derby due to ground conditions and now faces older horses for the first time over the shorter Eclipse distance. However Oxx said yesterday:

“He was a bit keen early on (at Epsom) and we would have preferred a faster pace ourselves. There’s a lot of Coolmore spin going around: they’re trying to alter the picture as best they can. That’s just their style and we all know about that! The result is there and he stays the trip well enough.”

Oxx also stressed yesterday the value of a colt proving his versatility and having won at a mile and a mile and a half, Sea The Stars will now attempt a Group hat-trick at different distances this weekend.

It should be a good distance for him, who knows what his best distance is yet. We will try him and see how he goes. It’s always nice to win top races over a variety of distances. Winning at a mile and a quarter would be another feather in his cap. It’s important to prove a horse’s versatility, Oxx isn’t underestimating the task facing Sea The Stars against the likes of Conduit and Rip Van Winkle on Saturday and said the result will be influential in deciding the rest of his colt’s 2009 campaign. Another race gives us more information. He has only had five races so every time he runs we learn a little more. It could point us in a certain direction, it looks like there will be a couple of pacemakers in the race so it will be a nice pace I hope. The usual blend of speed, stamina and class will be required.

Ground conditions are currently quick at Sandown but showers for the area are forecast over the next couple of days. However, Oxx doesn’t anticipate a late withdrawal similar to last weekend at the Curragh.

It’s not the same situation. It’s pretty fast at Sandown at the minute. At the moment it is very hot and they could get a thundery shower I suppose. We will monitor it but it’s not the same situation as last week when there was a lot of moisture in the ground to begin with.

Can Rip Van Winkle Bat Sea The Stars Over 1m 2f…

Jimmy Fortune cleary thinks so, but we say he has no chance, here’s Jimmy view…

Jimmy Fortune can hardly wait to get the leg up on Aidan O’Brien’s Rip Van Winkle in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown on Saturday. Fortune has come in for the ride on the Galileo colt with Ballydoyle stable jockey Johnny Murtagh on the sidelines due to suspension. The three-year-old has so far finished fourth in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and in the Derby at Epsom, both of which were won by Sea The Stars. Fortune admits John Oxx’s charge is the one to beat again at the weekend but he has certainly not given up hope of turning the form around. Fortune told At The Races;

“He’s a very nice horse and for Johnny to ride him in the Derby, he has obviously being doing everything right at home so I’m very happy to get the ride. To win a Guineas and then go on and win a Derby, Sea The Stars is obviously a high-class horse and he’s the one we’ll all have to beat. Conduit is also a solid horse who has been there in these Group One races and done it. He handles the track and he is going to be there. It looks a three-horse race but you can not write off Luca Cumani’s horse (Cima De Triomphe). The trip could be ideal for us as he travelled well in the Derby and there were stamina doubts going in there, so you would have thought this was his trip. I’ll speak to Aidan and see what he wants me to do and obviously I’ll speak to Johnny and find out everything I can about the horse. Hopefully we’ll get it right on the day. We haven’t got that much to find with Sea The Stars, it’s going to be a great race and I’m looking forward to it.”

Joining Rip Van Winkle from Ballydoyle are Malibu Bay and Set Sail, while St Leger and Breeders’ Cup Turf hero Conduit spearheads the older generation, with stable companion Lang Shining also taking his chance. Henry Cecil’s Twice Over, Cima De Triomphe, Steele Tango and Jukebox Jury complete the stellar line-up. Mike De Kock’s Archipenko was not declared after suffering a swollen fetlock.

Tazeez, Monitor Closely and Westphalia were the other withdrawals at the final declaration stage, meaning the sponsors have decided to cut Sea The Stars to 4-6 from 4-5 for the historic contest. Coral spokesman Simon Clare feels he could be even shorter come post time.

Coral-Eclipse, prices: 4-6 Sea The Stars, 7-2 Conduit, 4-1 Rip Van Winkle, 8-1 Cima De Triomphe, 16-1 Twice Over, 66-1 Steele Tango, Jukebox Jury, 200-1 Malibu Bay, Lang Shining, 250-1 Set Sail

Bet365 Gold Cup Preview, Sandown, Saturday

The Bet 365 Gold Cup is run at Sandown on Saturday

The Bet 365 Gold Cup is run at Sandown on Saturday

The 2008/2009 jumps season is all over bar the shouting. Paul Nicholls will be champion trainer again and Tony McCoy will be crowned Champion Jockey, for the 14th time in succession. But there is the small matter of the Bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase, which is the shouting!

I have already said that Lacdoudal has a big chance of winning the Bet365 Gold Cup he won in 2006 for Philip Hobbs and is a 6/1 chance to do so. Lacdoudal is not favourite, that accolade goes to Hoo La Baloo who has been in consistent but not sparkling form. I think that Lacdoudal loves Sandown and is a better bet, I would certainly be laying Hoo La Baloo at 5-1.

But what of the other runners in The Bet 365 Gold Cup ?

Oodachee is the only other runner in single figures. Trained in Ireland by Charlie Swann this one comes to the Bet365 Gold Cup following a good run in the Topham Chase at Aintree, finishing a close second. Oodachee has a big chance and I consider this the biggest threat to the favourite.

Of the rest Zacharova and Briery Fox are the only two in the field to have won their last starts.  Zacarova is the one to look at in detail. Hailing from the Grand National Winning yard of Venitia Williams Zacharova won a Chase named after the Grand National Winner Mon Mome at Cheltenham last time. It would be no surprise to see Venitia Williams land the Bet365 Gold Cup and crown what has been a great season for her.

Zacarova is 10-1 and I will be backing this one each way. At the bottom of the weights, carrying only 10 stone from a stable in form, Zacharova can not be ignored. Not to be confused with Zarkava who won the Arc de Triomphe!

There are fifteen runners, which means that it is each way the first three, not four. I am sure that Bet365 will offer first four each way, after all it is called the Bet365 Gold Cup and it is worth checking with the Sponsors. One thing Bet365 will do is give you a Free Bet to open your account and also if you back the winner of the Bet365 Gold Cup they will give you a Free bet to the same value.

Hennessy will be partnered by Champion Jockey Tony McCoy, who is riding at his minimum weight and is not out of it at 11-1. The trainer has not had the best of season’s but you can never write off McCoy.It would be fitting for McCoy to win the Bet365 Gold Cup on the day he will be crowned Champion.

New Little Bric has the habit of popping up to spring a surprise as was shown 2 runs ago when winning the Gold Cup at Newbury. Could he do it again in the Bet365 Gold Cup?

You can win with Bet365 and land an amazing £200 of Free Bets!

Badiat Alzaman (2.25 Wolverhampton) is one I will be laying today. Currently 3.6 to Lay, David Simcock’s three year old has had a 6 months break and his price is too short in the context of his form. I expect his price to drift, may be not to the extent that Madame Jourdain did yesterday. I took 7.4 about yesterday’s advice and almost fell off my chair when I looked closer to the off as she was 4 times the price, which only goes to show the importance of getting on early.

Delegator to win 2000 Guineas for Meehan and Spencer

Delegator - 2000 Guineas Favourite

Delegator - 2000 Guineas Favourite

Delegator, a three year old colt by Dansili is trained at Manton by Brian Meehan. Delegator is now favourite for next Saturday’s 2000 Guineas after Delegator won the Craven Stakes, also run at Newmarket.

Delegator has now ran four times in his career, all at Newmarket, it is as if he has been aimed at the 2000 Guineas since being a two year-old.

Delegator was second in his debut maiden to a nice horse, then came back to Newmarket to win with the minimum of fuss. Jamie Spencer then took the ride in the Dewhurst where Delegator finished fifth, with Intense Focus winning. This one is trained by Jim Bolger in Ireland who trained New Approach last year.

Delegator showed he was a different, stronger and better horse as a three year-old when he returned to Newmarket for the Craven Stakes. Jamie Spencer held Delegator up at the back then asked Delegator to quicken up which he did readily to win going away. Delegator’s times indicate that was a good run and the horse was made a worthy favoutrite for the 2000 Guineas.

So can Delegator win the 2000 Guineas?

We took a chance based on the positive reports prior to the Craven and advised that readers back Delegator for the 2000 Guineas. Certainly he is a worthy 8-1 shot.  Confidence amongst Delegator’s connections is high. Brian Meehan, Delegator’s trainer says that Delegator is the horse to beat on 2000 Guineas Day. Jamie Spencer believes that Delegator has what it takes to win the 2000 Guineas.

Jamie Spencer must have Delegator closer to the pace. He will not be able to come from too far back, a point stressed by Meehan. It is the final furlong where the 2000 Guineas is won and lost, but much can depend on what happens in the first furlong.

Racing Diary is delighted with the 8-1 about Delegator for the 2000 Guineas and would still recommend readers to back Delegator to win the 2000 Guineas now!

Chelsea and Man Utd Should Both Win

Drogba - five goals in last four games

Drogba - five goals in last four games

Manchester United v Portsmouth – 8pm

The title is Manchester United‘s to win now, following Liverpool’s 4-4 draw with Arsenal last night. The Champions will need to play better than they did against Everton if they are to win the league with the minimum of fuss. Tonight they face Portsmouth at Old Trafford and surely must win this one.

United were coasting to yet another Premier League crown before being beaten 4-1 by Liverpool and then remarkably falling foul of Fulham. They then managed last gasp wins against Villa and Sunderland ,so it would be fair to say that United are not in the best league form. But they should beat Portsmouth who have had a roller-coaster season, first the departure of Redknapp to Spurs, then the sacking on Tony Adams and then the appointment of Paul Hart. They now look safe and as such have nothing left to play for this season after their 1-0 win at the weekend put them six points clear of the drop zone. United are due a return to commanding league form and could thrash Portsmouth tonight.

United fans will certainly be looking for a better performance from Berbatov, but I would not be lumping on him at 5/1 to score first. I will settle for backing United to win the game.

Man Utd are a 1/4 chance to win the game, but better value is to be had by backing Utd to win to nil at 4/5 with Blue Square.

Chelsea v Everton – 8pm

Both teams were engaged in FA Cup Semi-Final Action at the weekend and will meet tonight in the league for what is a rehearsal for the FA Cup Final. Chelsea played well and beat Arsenal, whereas Everton did not play well and won on Penalties against a weakened Manchester United. Although Chelsea only have a remote chance of winning the league there is every reason to make sure they win this game, not least the imp[act that tonight’s result will have on hearts and minds in the cup final!

Chelsea are a different team under Guus Hiddink and his arrival has sparked Didier Drogba in to action. He is on fire at the moment and was on target once again at Wembley, netting the winner to make it five goals in four games. Drogba is awesome in this mood and will present a totally different proposition for the Everton defence than Berbatov managed on Saturday. Everton’s recent away form has been moderate having only managed a draw with Newcastle, Blackburn and Villa and also suffering a 2-1 defeat at Portsmouth in their last four away matches. I am struggling to find any reason why Chelsea should not win this one and keep a clean sheet too.

Chelsea are 4/9 to win the game (generally) and are 6/5 (Blue Sq) to win to nil.

Back Manchester United to Win to nil – 4/5 Blue Square

Tuesday’s Racing Tips….

Richard Hannon's Melt is one of Todays Tips

Richard Hannon's Melt is one of Todays Tips

It was a bad day for me on Monday. Desperate Dan was second, but the rider let Daryl Holland steel the race. The first lay was spot on, but I underestimated the Henderson horse. Hopefully we will fare better today.

Today is another moderate day of racing, despite the high number of races. I am not inclined to do much today, but hopefully I have found a couple of gems amongst all the low quality racing. This afternoon at Folkstone the Seller (3.30) is shocking and the only horse you could possibly back is the favourite Billy Beetroot. Well beaten last time in a Handicap that saw the winner steak 11 lengths clear, clearly very handicapped. So taking the winner out Billy Beetroot won the race (of the rest) and is consistent in his handicap grad something you can not say about any of his opponents. Stuart Williams is shrewd, to say the least and has booked the useful William Carson to take five pounds off.   I like his chances and make Billy Beetroot my bet of the day, which is indicative of the cards I’m afraid to say.

Melt (6.20 Bath) is a filly who has been very busy over the winter, having had nine runs on the All-Weather and will certainly not be lacking for fitness as she comes back to turf! Superverdi by contrast has had a break and the race is between these two with teh preference being for Melt to get her head in front and at the prices I am prepared to take the Richard Hannon trained melt. Lady Bora is one I would definitely lay, the race is a match-up with Melt to come out on top, in my view.

Now we turn to Laying Horses to Lose on The Betting Exchanges…

Laying Horses to Lose today is a good strategy. Lady Bora in that Bath (6.20) race is first on the list, as detailed above. Also laying one against Billy Beetroot may not be the wisest move, as it may compound losses if things go wrong but the market has Mythical Blue as a 3-1 shot. his last two runs saw his finish last in a Nursery at Musselburgh and second last of eleven in a claimer at Great Leighs. He has a high rating but his reappearance in a seller for his new trainer, having been with Billy Beetroots trainer Stuart Williams tells us all we need to know. Had the horse gone from a useless trainer to Milton Bradley I would be cautious, but am not worried at all and think he will get well beaten today.

Tonight’s Football looks interesting and we continue to make good money at the Snooker!

Have a good day!

Monday’s Horseracing Tips…

Get On Desperate Dan at Wolves Today

Get On Desperate Dan at Wolves Today

Well certainly lots to choose from today. Something for everyone, with Flat, Jumps, All-Weather and Irish racing this afternoon and evening. There is plenty to go at, but what we have in quantity we lack in quality.

I have a 10/3 very strong horse racing back bet today. That is on the Premier Service today and I think that the bookmakers have made the wrong horse favourite. If you want to be on, then join right now.

Elsewhere I will be laying a couple today starting with Standpoint of Sir Michael Stoute at Pontefract (3.10). I would be very surprised if at least one of the others is not better than the standard of only 74 that the Favourite sets. At 3.1 I am more than prepared to take a chance on Standpoint getting beaten today.

You’re The Top (4.25 Kempton) Won a poor race last time, although Nicky Henderson’s horse won it very easily it was not a good race and his form prior to that was not very good at all. On Betfair this morning the horse is 2.18 to win, and I think that is very short.  The trouble is that there is only Proper really on side so heavily laying You’re the Top is risky, but it could be worth a small investment, on the basis that we would be in profit after Standpoint’s race.

Henderson has the favourites of both divisions of the bumper at Kempton. Random division too, who would have thought it! Again his horses should go well, but I am not prepared to take those short prices.

To give you one to back today is not an easy task, Premier Service members have the best bet by far today but I think Desperate Dan is the best chance otherwise at Wolves (3.50). This horse is tough and consistent and in Claimers will keep on winning, until he gets claimed by some clueless trainer in search of winners and his form then dips. 2.84 on Betfair is an excellent price and I think this is a good bet.
