The 2008/2009 jumps season is all over bar the shouting. Paul Nicholls will be champion trainer again and Tony McCoy will be crowned Champion Jockey, for the 14th time in succession. But there is the small matter of the Bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase (3.10), which is the aforementioned shouting! Sandown stages a simply stunning day of racing, with top class flat and jumps racing. I think that Lacdoudal has a big chance of winning the race he won in 2006 for Philip Hobbs and can be backed at 10 in the Win Market on Betfair. Hoo La Baloo who has been in consistent but not sparkling form for Paul Nicholls is favourite. I think that Lacdoudal, who loves Sandown is a much better bet and will certainly oppose Hoo La Baloo. Tony McCoy is riding Hennessy off 10st 7lbs and could very well be the plunge horse of the day as the McCoy factor takes hold. For me Lacdoudal is running off a very fair mark, 12 pounds lower than his 2006 winning mark of 151. He is my idea of a solid each way bet. Sandown stage a fantastic mixed card, there are not enough of them in my opinion in the UK. Kalahari King (2.35) will love the faster ground and should be suited by the track. Ferdy Murphy’s Arkle runner-up won by 8 lengths at Aintree last time out and Kalahari King looks a good thing to finish a great season with another commanding performance. The ground will see Kalahari King at his best and I expect him to win and to win in style. My bet of the Day is Kalahari King – Double Maximum Stakes (2.35 Sandown).
My P and L this week is in profit, primarily because of the lays, another of which was successful yesterday after being heavily supported. The one I would lay today is definitely Twist Magic (2.35) , against Kalahari King. Twist Magic has looked a shadow of his former self this season and although the better ground will suit him, it would take an enormous leap of faith to see him winning at Sandown. At 4.2 to Lay this is one well worth taking on. You need a Betfair account to Lay Horses to Lose.
The Sandown Card just gets better and better. On the flat there is a Group 2 and a Group 3 race, both full of quality. I really like the 3.45 race in which Paco Boy and Virtual make their season reappearances. Paco Boy is top class. A Group One Winner in France before not handling the surface at Nad Al Sheba he is reported to be in great form. He is the best horse in the race and Richard Hannon writing on his website says he is not contemplating defeat and Paco Boy is flying at home.
This is what Hannon has to say on his web-site
Hannon said:”After the Dubai trip, our original plan was to wait for the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on May 16, but this is a good prize in its own right, and with three weeks between the two races the timing is perfect.
“Paco Boy worked really well at home last Sunday and then again on Tuesday, and, though he was tired for a few days when we got back from Dubai, he is in great form again now. “The race at Sandown definitely looks within Paco Boy’s compass, and it would be very nice to put that Nad Al Sheba experience behind us and go to Newbury on a high rather than head for another Group 1 on a retrieving mission.”
Paco Boy will only run if the ground is suitable on Saturday.
Hannon, commenting on the Dubai trip said:”There were far too many minuses – no preperation race, the ground that was too firm, an outside draw and a distance which was always going to stretch Paco Boy. It might have been an all-expenses paid trip, but the entry fee was £53,000 and the prize money only went down to sixth, so, all in all, it was a very expensive lesson to learn.”
Paco Boy is a big bet for me and should show his class. Backing a Group 1 winner in a Group 2 has been a successful formula for me and Paco Boy should continue that trend.
I am hoping for a big day on Saturday and I hope that Kalahri King and Paco Boy are both winners at Sandown.
Summary For Saturday:
Sandown:
2.35 Kalahri King – Win
3.10 Lacdoudal- Each-Way Win, Twist Magic-Lay
3.45 Paco Boy – Win

Never mind the last 10 years trends, I’m taking in 13 as it’s my lucky number ;-)
