Thursday’s Horseracing Tips…25th June

It’s a spot of overtime tonight for Racing Diary Punters….

We had another good day at Worcester on Wednsday with two winners, both vintage McCoy rides. I said he was the man to have on your side, and it was the case yesterday! Budwiser was miles clear of the field, but there was one better in front of Budwiser which illustrates the perils of backing in bumpers. Still, five winners from six bets is form I am very pleased with and hope you have made some good money!

Today is the start of Newcastle’s three day Northumberland Plate meeting, culminating in the big race on Saturday in which I think Judgethemoment will follow up his Royal Ascot win . But to Thursdays action and it is a strange card at the Gosforth venue today with a decent listed race following a seller, but race planning aside the best of the action is to be found on Tyneside, which is where we are heading for two bets.

Markington (4.00) is in fantastic form at the moment. Looking to complete a hat-trick Peter Bowen clearly thinks that he is ahead of the handicapper on the flat so takes his chance today with a six pounds penalty. William Carson keeps the ride after showing great tenacity to get home by a neck at Pontefract at the weekend by a neck.  Recent wins are scarce amongst his 11 rivals and Markington looks rock solid over this two mile trip. This is not as strong as the last race, so lets hope he can win a bit easier today!

Then after the seller the best race of the day, a fillies listed event is run at 5.00 where Henry Cecil’s Gripsholm Castle is sure to be well supported. Her only start to date was an impressive win, at 20/1, in a Newmarket maiden in which she got the better of her stable mate comfortably by 4 1/2 lengths, she bolted in. Sadly we will not get anywhere near those double figure odds but with natural improvement this could be a filly that is better than this class and can win this in commanding style. The trainer is probably the best there is with fillies, so lets see how good she is today. Take an early price, if she drifts Bet365 will pay the bigger SP.

Elsewhere there is only one horse of interest, which sees us putting in a bit of overtime to back Tangerine Trees at 9.30.  There will not be many, if any, races run later than this eight runner six furlong sprint this season. Brian Smart’s horse can follow up his last course and distance win and send us to bed in profit. This could be the best bet of the day, as this one looks to have the measure of the field on form.

Friday..Good Thing at Musselburgh..

After scratchings only 4 horses greet the starter in the 2.55 from Musselburgh and one stands out as clearly a superior staying prospect to the rest over the 12f100y test.

Top weight Baizically comes into this on the back of winning two on end including against similar 2 back by 4l over 13f on good to firm going at Hamilton, last start it franked that form winning again for a bigger purse over 14f on this track. Both starts suggest he is well above the level required to win here and he is bred for this trip being by Gallileo. He will be on pace and the pace scenario should prove a bonus which is likely to be slow. It simply keeps on ticking every box we look at. Class will prevail in this facile 4 horse staying contest.

We saw  the transformation of a champion into a legend as well as a huge gamble landed, yesterday. Lets hope for another good day today.

So three days down, now two to go. In many ways the Coronation Stakes (3.45) is the best race of the week, it certainly is the race of the day, with a quality field of 3 year-old fillies. Again won the Irish 1000 Guineas, Ghannaati won the Newmarket 1000 Guineas, Rainbow View was last years champion filly and French training sensation Jean-Claude Rouget saddles French Guineas winner Elusive Wave. I see this as a match between the two Guineas winners. Ghanaati looks a really good filly but I will take Elusive Wave at the prices. I will be laying Rainbow View who hated the ground at Newmarket and will be on a similar surface today.

The 3.05 is a decent Group two for three year old colts and geldings in which Black Bear Island is favourite and runs after a really poor show at Epsom where he didn’t handle the track. Plenty of Derby also rans in this race but I am going for one who didn’t run at Epsom in Native Ruler. He was going well in the Dante before being short of room and at the early prices is a worthy each-way bet for a trainer who is overdue a Royal Ascot winner.

Wesley Ward has had two winners with two year-olds so far and at the start of the week he said that Aegean was his best horse. He has proved that his 2 year-olds are ahead of the European team and should be noted particularly given what has been seen so far. I must side with Aegean though the draw is a worry, I guess we will see if there really is a draw bias or not. With early speed Aegean may be able to overcome the draw and make it a third win for the American team.

It’s a very busy day with six meetings and the T20 Cricket to attack with a loads of betting opportunities for us today. With Royal Ascot starting on Tuesday now is the time to swell coffers for the best week of flat racing anywhere in the world which Racing Diary will be launching our Live Interactive Trading, more about that later! I have a long short list to work from which should yield some winners for us today. I will highlight the best bets below and then the others on the list….



At Yarmouth….

We have to wait for the luck last race where Sir Mark Prescott can continue his revival following a temporary shutdown of his stable with Brett Vale (5.05). The gelding has won twice off his current handicap mark of 57 and the master trainer (and punters pal) replaces his stable jockey Seb Sanders with the very capable Rossie Jessop who takes off five pounds of the six pounds penalty. The early price looks a good one for a horse that should complete a hat-trick and will surely be winning races from a higher marks in the future. Layers will be brave to oppose this one but it is surprising how often they take on Sir Mark’s handicappers, it is a battle in which the trainer is well ahead. We can benefit from another well handicapped performer today.

At Newbury….

Party Doctor (1.35) should kick off proceedings at Newbury with a win in a competitive looking two year-old maiden. Tom Dascombe’s colt went very close to making a winning start at Leicester first time out which will with further improvement, have set him up nicely to go one better and land a nice wager for his backers. I anticipate this one will come in for sustained support in the serious trading period before the off so taking the early price is recommended.



Best Bet of the Day (Newbury)….

The feature race on the Newbury card is a three year-old fillies listed contest which I anticipate going to the very progressive Apple Charlotte (2.40). I backed the Cecil filly last time when she beat The Miniver Rose readily over course and distance. Unbeaten in all of her three career starts connections decided against running in the Oaks in favour of a gradual step up in class. The Miniver Rose did take part in the Oaks suggesting that the form, in the context of today’s race at least, is rock solid. Apple Charlotte is my best bet of the day and again I forecast she will be well supported.

8.20 Haydock- Sunshine Always… handicap debut off mark of 79. Would have been a best bet but for the jockey.

2.30 Nottingham- Murcar..good win last time and can follow-up today

4.35 Yarmouth- Bataleur..in good form and went close last time, could win today

Wednesday Horseracing Tips..10th June

Dream Lodge won with some authority to further, if any was needed, the abilities of Richard Fahey as a trainer. Taking the early price paid dividends as I thought a steady stream of support pushed the price into around the 3-1 mark at the off, which still proved to be good value.

The Fahey team should kick off the Beverley card with a winner in the shape of Maidtourn (2.00). Dropped into a claimer following being over faced in a conditions event at Pontefract.   This is a big drop in class which, if the filly were to reproduce the performance of her course and distance maiden win, from a good draw then she should win. The handicapper has rated her at 75 which is the highest of those with a classification. If the filly that won at Beverley turns up then she should be back in the winners enclosure where I for one will be applauding her.

The Fahey horses are worth following when in form and they should have a winner with Joe Jo Star (3.30) at Beverley this afternoon. I will be there to see this horse who won the Swinton Hurdle in May and runs here without a penalty following an easy win in an apprentice race last week off a mark of 57. If we can get a price then this is one worth wading into as a good thing.

  • 4.20 Brighton – Hand Painted
  • 8.40 Hamilton – Fremen…

…Fremen (8.40) looks to have bags in hand dropped into a seller, from claimers. Dandy Nicholls will be scratching his head if he were to come back empty handed. He has given the eight year-old a couple of months to freshen up and the trip North of the Border should give the gelding a confidence boosting victory.
