His efforts to force his way back into the fold have been helped of late by a reserve outing, a behind-closed-doors friendly and a fundraising game again Accrington Stanley. Having come through those contests unscathed, Duff has now set his sights on securing a recall to the first-team fold for Saturday’s visit from Sunderland.
However Sunderland striker Jordan Cook will be out for several months after damaging cruciate ligaments in his right knee. It Could be a long season for Hull and Phil Brown
Hull City v Birmingham City
Hull City insist a recent report suggesting they are struggling financially is inaccurate. An article published by The Guardian on Wednesday suggested the Tigers are currently experiencing monetary troubles.
The piece was based on the fact that the Premier League outfit are yet to submit their accounts for 2008, the only club in the top flight of English football yet to do so. Three other companies connected with the club or the KC Stadium have also to reveal details of their accounts.
Hull, however, insist there is nothing sinister behind the delay, claiming that ‘this is a technical point relating to a change of auditing standards. News from St Andrews is that Birmingham City have been rocked by the news that James McFadden could be out for up to six weeks. The talismanic playmaker lasted just 45 minutes of the Blues’ derby date with Aston Villa on Sunday before being forced off.
Scans have since revealed that the Scotland international has torn a muscle in his thigh and will require a spell on the sidelines in which to recover. Early indications suggest McFadden could miss Birmingham’s next five games, while he will also be forced to sit out an international friendly against Japan in October. The news comes a major blow to Blues boss Alex McLeish who has seen his side make a mixed start to the 2009/10 campaign.

Stoke will be looking for goals...
Bolton Wanderers v Stoke City
Ex Sunderland “stopper” Thomas Sorensen has confirmed that he could be fit to face Bolton at the weekend despite being forced off against Chelsea.
The Stoke goalkeeper limped off against the Blues at the Britannia Stadium after complaining of a strained thigh muscle. The 33-year-old was replaced by Steve Simonsen and the former England Under 21 international put in an impressive display despite conceding both goals in the 2-1 defeat.
However Simonsen could yet miss out on the trip to The Reebok after an arm infection kept him out of training on Monday, leaving manager Tony Pulis sweating on the fitness of his two first-team shot-stoppers. At Bolton, Ricardo Vaz Te revealed his delight after he played his first game for nearly a year in Bolton’s reserve clash with Blackburn on Monday.
The 22-year-old had been out with a knee injury suffered against Manchester United at Old Trafford at the end of September last year. The striker admitted that at times he even doubted whether he would even return to the game but having played 45 minutes on Monday he confirms his confidence has returned. A first-team comeback still seems some way off but the Portuguese ace could force his way into Gary Megson’s plans for the Carling Cup clash with West Ham next week.
