Burnley v Sunderland

Michael Duff is back to full fitness and hoping he has done enough of late to catch Owen Coyle’s eye for tomorrows Live game on Sky. The 31-year-old has spent the last month attempting to shake off the knock, desperate to be involved in the Clarets’ debut season in the Premier League.

His efforts to force his way back into the fold have been helped of late by a reserve outing, a behind-closed-doors friendly and a fundraising game again Accrington Stanley. Having come through those contests unscathed, Duff has now set his sights on securing a recall to the first-team fold for Saturday’s visit from Sunderland.

However Sunderland striker Jordan Cook will be out for several months after damaging cruciate ligaments in his right knee. The youngster sustained the injury on Tuesday evening during the reserves’ 1-0 defeat to Burnley. After landing awkwardly on the half-hour mark, he was stretchered off and underwent X-rays to confirm the damage. The club’s medical team will continue to assess Cook’s injury before and after surgery which will keep him out for most of the season. The news is a blow to Sunderland boss Steve Bruce who has been encouraged by Cook’s impressive displays during a short loan spell with Darlington.

Aston Villa v Portsmouth

Aston Villa new boy Stephen Warnock believes their new-look defence can help the club to success this season. New signings Warnock Richard Dunne and James Collins all made their debuts in Sunday’s 1-0 win over local rivals Birmingham.

Warnock was happy with his first outing for the club and believes the trio will bring some leadership to the side because of their experience. Meanwhile, Aruna Dindane insists he is ready to join Portsmouth’s Premier League battle.Dindane joined Pompey on a season-long loan from Lens with a view to permanent deal.

The Ivorian international managed just a dozen games last season before a knee injury curtailed his campaign. He is now building back to full fitness and although manager Paul Hart said he did not want to rush him, Dindane is confident he will soon be involved.

It Could be a long season for Hull and Phil Brown

Hull City v Birmingham City

Hull City insist a recent report suggesting they are struggling financially is inaccurate. An article published by The Guardian on Wednesday suggested the Tigers are currently experiencing monetary troubles.

The piece was based on the fact that the Premier League outfit are yet to submit their accounts for 2008, the only club in the top flight of English football yet to do so. Three other companies connected with the club or the KC Stadium have also to reveal details of their accounts.

Hull, however, insist there is nothing sinister behind the delay, claiming that ‘this is a technical point relating to a change of auditing standards. News from St Andrews is that Birmingham City have been rocked by the news that James McFadden could be out for up to six weeks. The talismanic playmaker lasted just 45 minutes of the Blues’ derby date with Aston Villa on Sunday before being forced off.

Scans have since revealed that the Scotland international has torn a muscle in his thigh and will require a spell on the sidelines in which to recover. Early indications suggest McFadden could miss Birmingham’s next five games, while he will also be forced to sit out an international friendly against Japan in October. The news comes a major blow to Blues boss Alex McLeish who has seen his side make a mixed start to the 2009/10 campaign.

Bolton Wanderers v Stoke City

Ex Sunderland “stopper” Thomas Sorensen has confirmed that he could be fit to face Bolton at the weekend despite being forced off against Chelsea.

The Stoke goalkeeper limped off against the Blues at the Britannia Stadium after complaining of a strained thigh muscle. The 33-year-old was replaced by Steve Simonsen and the former England Under 21 international put in an impressive display despite conceding both goals in the 2-1 defeat.

However Simonsen could yet miss out on the trip to The Reebok after an arm infection kept him out of training on Monday, leaving manager Tony Pulis sweating on the fitness of his two first-team shot-stoppers. At Bolton, Ricardo Vaz Te revealed his delight after he played his first game for nearly a year in Bolton’s reserve clash with Blackburn on Monday.

The 22-year-old had been out with a knee injury suffered against Manchester United at Old Trafford at the end of September last year. The striker admitted that at times he even doubted whether he would even return to the game but having played 45 minutes on Monday he confirms his confidence has returned. A first-team comeback still seems some way off but the Portuguese ace could force his way into Gary Megson’s plans for the Carling Cup clash with West Ham next week.

Premier League Football Betting Tips, 12-13th September

By Barry Robson

By Barry Robson

After a break for the internationals it’s back to Premier League action this weekend. It promises to be an exciting one and our man has cast his eye over the teams. Barry Robson is back with his football betting tips for Saturday and Sunday. Barry is looking at four draws, half the pools done for you is he Derren Brown?  We will see….

Birmingham v Aston Villa (Sunday)

Franck Queudrue has admitted that Sunday’s Midlands derby is Birmingham’s biggest game of the season. Alex McLeish’s side missed out on a match against Aston Villa last term as they were battling to win promotion from the Championship.

But the two teams will lock horns at St Andrews on Sunday and ex Boro and Fulham player Queudrue is predicting a very competitive clash. The French defender does not want anything to get out of control but feels referee Howard Webb may find it difficult to keep everyone on the pitch. Queudrue told the Birmingham Mail;

“We all know exactly how the fans feel about this, they are on at us all the time about beating Villa, and it is certainly our biggest game of the season. You can talk about Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool coming to St Andrews but no, this game is more important. The fans have passion for it, and as players you must have that passion too, and we have. It’s about who wins the duels, the single battles, without being silly of course, in a good way. That’s who will get the game. But the referee is going to have a tough job, he could have a problem keeping 11 on the pitch from us and them!”

Queudrue had to watch from the sidelines as Blues lost 5-1 to Aston Villa in April 2008 but he is confident there will be a different outcome on this occasion.

Result : Score Draw  Man To Watch : Ashley Young on his return from injury  FirstGoal Scorer : Emile Heskey

Best Odds: Birmingham 12/5, Draw 9/4 (Boylesports), Villa 13/10

Wigan v West Ham

Alessandro Diamanti is looking forward to making his West Ham debut after joining from Livorno. The Italian striker did not complete his transfer in time to be available for the goalless draw with Blackburn on 29th August and has been settling into his new surroundings for the past fortnight during the international break. He scored two stunning free-kicks in a reserve match at Upton Park on Tuesday and hopes he can keep his form going. Diamanti told the club’s official website.

“To play here was an excellent feeling. I was very excited and couldn’t wait to show my qualities, the team did well and played a good game, which I’m very happy about.”

Diamanti admits he has been an admirer of English football for some time and he is relishing the prospect of playing with and against some of the best players on the planet.

“I came to England because the Premier League is the most beautiful championship in the world and I cannot wait to start the season with the first team, I am very excited about that and want to have this challenge.”

Result : Score Draw  Man To Watch : Alessandro Diamanti on debut for Hammers  First Scorer : Allesandro Diamanti

Best Odds: Wigan 13/10, Draw 23/10 (Ladbrokes), West Ham 9/4

Blackburn v Wolverhampton Wanderers

Blackburn Rovers boss Sam Allardyce feels a weekend meeting with Wolves has become a must-win contest for his side. The Ewood Park outfit have made a slow start to the 2009/10 campaign, taking just one point from their opening three fixtures.

They have also struggled in front of goal, with only a Gael Givet effort in a 2-1 defeat at Sunderland to show for their efforts so far. While results have been poor, Allardyce still feels that his side have displayed enough potential to suggest they can pull clear of a relegation scrap this term.

The experienced coach does, however, accept that points on the board are vital at this stage of the season and has called on his players to grind out a result against Wolves on Saturday. Allardyce said

“It’s more important than anything else now, we’ve had performances with no results, apart from the draw against West Ham. What we must do is get the performance with the result, and that needs to be the win – and if we can’t get the performance, just win, get three points on the board, which will settle us all down. It’s going into game four for us and we’ve been excited about what we’ve done and how much we have created in those games. But at the end of the day, the bottom line is that out of all the chances we have created, out of all opportunities to score goals, we’ve only scored one. There have been one or two cruel blows in terms of wrong refereeing decisions at certain times during the games and that has played its part as well, but the big part is about us needing to improve on our finishing for Saturday.”

Result : Score Draw  Man To Watch : Gamst Pedersen  First Scorer: Beni McCarthy

Best odds: Blackburn 11/8, Draw 5/2 (Bet365), Wolves 4/1

Spurs host the Champions

Spurs host the Champions

Tottenham v Manchester United (5.15pm)

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is delighted with his summer transfer dealings, believing the squad is now in a stronger state. The Spurs boss brought in six players in the window, while letting seven leave White Hart Lane. But he believes his squad is now in a better position to deal with the challenges ahead as his unbeaten side prepare to face Manchester United on Saturday in the first game after the international break. Redknapp told the club’s official website:

“I never felt that we needed to make a lot of changes this summer because we already had a lot of quality within our squad. Sometimes I think that you can have too many players and it does nothing but give you problems. The squad is stronger, I think we have bought well and it is a well-balanced squad now in all parts of the field.”

Meanwhile, Spurs are hopeful that one of their summer signings Sebastien Bassong will be fit for Saturday’s clash, while fellow centre-back Ledley King is also confident of playing after recovering from a groin injury he suffered during the last-gasp win over Birmingham.

Result : Score Draw  Man To Watch; Niko Kranjcar on his Spurs Debut  First Scorer  : Niko Kranjcar (freekick, top left)

Premier League Football Betting, 22-23rd August

By Barry Robson

By Barry Robson

Manchester United‘s defeat at Turf Moor shows that anything is possible in this league and, as in every season, has had people jumping to conclusions…sorry Chelsea, they`ll STILL win it!

After just two games Ancelotti`s “mercenaries” have shortened from 15/8 to 6/4, Manchester United pushed out to 100/30 from 9/4 and “youthfull” Arsenal clipped in to 5/1 from 8′s. To me all three price changes are a typical “early doors” over-reaction, especially the Champions’ drift to 10/3, which looks a big price…grab it, I have! Get on Now with Betfair and get a £50 Free Bet….

Here are my Football Betting Tips for the weekend of 22-23rd August.

Arsenal v Portsmouth (Back Arsenal)

What a brilliant start to the season Arsenal have made…sorry I upset you Arsene…sorry Mr Moyes too! They produced their biggest opening day success at Everton (ouch!) and then had Charlie Nicholas purring on Tuesday night with their performance at Celtic Park (double ouch!) They play Portsmouth on Saturday and look good things, having never lost to them in the Premier League (12 games) and not been beaten at home since 1955.

Expect goals…lots of `em!

Result: Arsenal WIN  Man To Watch: Denilson  First Goalscorer: Cesq Fabregas

Best odds- Arsenal 1/5 with Paddy Power

Sunderland v Blackburn Rovers (Back The Draw)

This weekend’s best bet is at the Stadium of Light…unfortunately! Sunderland and Blackburn have produced just 15 goals in their 12 Premier League meetings (an average of only 1.25 goals per game I`m told) and neither side look full of goals this season…again! Blackburn are unbeaten in their last five visits to Stadium of Light and the draw, sadly, appeals.

Result: Score Draw (1-1 ?)  Man To Watch: Kenwyne Jones  First Goal Scorer: Darren Bent

Best Odds: 12/5 with BoyleSports

Hull City v Bolton Wanderers (Back Bolton)

I feared for Hull this season and they were badly out-classed by Spurs this week…it’s now 11 Premier League games without a win and just one success in 24…ouch, ouch!

Their home form is particularly worrying and although they bounced back last season from conceding five to Wigan… (how`d they win away then lose at home?) …by winning five of their next six games, I can’t see that happening this time around and Bolton look a decent bet to become the next side to win at the KC Stadium.

Result: Bolton WIN  ManTo Watch: Sean Davis  First Goal Scorer: Elmander

Best Odds: 2/1 with Skybet

West Ham v Tottenham Hotspur (Draw)

Optimism abounds again at White Hart Lane with Spurs top of the league and with a 100 per cent record after two games for only the second time in 14 years…yawn, yawn! However, after his second hat-trick in the Premier League and first since 2004, Jermain Defoe looks razor sharp and makes some appeal at 6/1 to win the Golden Boot…well, a modest bet perhaps! We will find out more on Sunday at West Ham in a game that is very hard to call but I envisage a score draw…2-2 even!

Result: Score Draw  Man To Watch: Mark Noble  First Goal Scorer: Jermaine Defoe

Best Odds: 12/5 with BoyleSports

Liverpool play on Monday, at home to Villa and are 1/5 to win, too short to back, but should win and are one for the multiple.

Well it’s back, Premier League football, with no Newcastle (shame!) and I am delighted to be here on RacingDiary.co.uk to give you my football betting advice, free, what good value eh? Here are my football betting tips for the first weekend of the Premier League Season.

Sunderland to beat Bolton

Sunderland to beat Bolton

Bolton Wanderers V Sunderland

Bolton Boss Gary Megson has quietly gone about his business this summer, bringing in four proven Premier League players with just a handful of departures which will do little to disturb the sleep of most Trotters fans.

The arrival of Sean Davis on a free transfer, plus Zat Knight and Sam Ricketts for undisclosed fees represent shrewd business by the 50-year-old. The addition of West Brom’s left-back Paul Robinson also adds some steel to the squad and on paper, they look a good bet to avoid the drop.

Sunderland head into the new Premier League season with an understandable air of optimism thanks to key arrivals at the Stadium of Light, especially that of Darren Bent and Lorik Cana…”El Destructeur! ”

Last season’s narrow escape from relegation has been banished to the history books as new manager Steve Bruce and a selection of astute signings, the latest being Lee “Battler” Cattermole from his old club Wigan, give the Wearsiders a realistic chance of establishing themselves in the top half of England’s elite league…”are you watching Mike Ashley?”

Result: Sunderland WIN  First Goal Scorer: Kieron Richardson  Man to Watch: Kieron Richardson

Best Odds- Sunderland 13/10 (Betfred)

Everton v Arsenal

Everton v Arsenal

Everton v Arsenal

The Toffees have belied their lack of investment in the last two seasons by finishing in fifth spot and also reaching the FA Cup final last term.

Everton have again been left behind in the transfer market this summer leaving David Moyes increasingly frustrated at not being able to strengthen his squad. New faces have been at a premium due to the lack of finances, but the return of Jo from Manchester City on loan for the season looks like a shrewd piece of business by Moyes.

Arsenal? No trophy since 2005.

Just one or two additions to Wenger’s side could change this situation entirely, but..? The current squad is a strong one should they avoid the curse of injuries that hangs over Arsenal with its usual inevitability…but?

They boast a wealth of attacking options and arguably have one of the most exciting players in the country in Arshavin. But the defensive problems that have been shown in pre-season must be sorted out. In my opinion, Wenger must avoid his readiness to rely so heavily on youth if they are going to do anything, but…?

Result: Everton WIN  First Goal Scorer: Jo  Man to Watch: Tim Cahill

Best Odds- Everton 9/4 (BoyleSports)

Stoke City v Burnley

Tony Pulis has won half the battle in keeping hold of his best players…Seyi Olofinjana’s departure is no loss…but only Dean Whitehead has been added to the first-team ranks.

The former Sunderland captain is a decent addition but more additions are desperately needed and, simply put, Stoke’s success this season depends on who Pulis can get in quickly.

The bottom line is that Stoke will be in the bottom five or six unless Pulis can add to his star quartet of Fuller, Beattie, Etherington or Lawrence. Find another couple of their quality, however, and who knows what they could achieve.

Back in midfield Glen Whelan looks set to be Whitehead’s first-choice partner…Delap will be restricted to bench duty..so Stoke shouldn’t be short of passing ability in the opposition’s half, but they are unlikely to alter their no-nonsense, “big boot”, attitude in their own.

Ryan Shawcross and Abdoulaye Faye are one of the best centre-half pairings outside the top six, Danny Higginbotham is an equally strong defender on the left and Andy Wilkinson is ever improving on the right, but distribution is not their chief concern and nor will it ever be under Pulis.

Pre-season has not gone too well for Owen Coyle and his men, he has stayed loyal to almost all the squad which got him into the Premier League…scary!

Coyle will just be hoping that his pre-season woes do not transfer into the season…scary?

The Burnley side that takes to the field on the opening day against Stoke will have a few new faces in, including club record signing Steven Fletcher.

The Scottish international looks a fine prospect, but his lack of experience at this level could mean he takes a little time to adapt…scary?

Result: Stoke City WIN  First Goal Scorer: James Beattie  Man to Watch: Dean Whitehead

Best Odds- Stoke 21/10 (BoyleSports)

Portsmouth v Fulham

Portsmouth v Fulham

Portsmouth v Fulham

Uncertainty has made for a miserable summer on the South Coast. With Sulaiman Al Fahim’s proposed takeover of Portsmouth still in the balance, the general feeling has spiralled from initial excitement to genuine concern.

Djimi Traore, Sean Davis, Glen Little, Noe Pamarot, Lauren and Jerome Thomas have all followed Peter Crouch and Sol Campbell in seeking exits. Granted, these players are not world-beaters, but they make up a squad. And, right now, one, with all due respect, I would be pushed to label Pompey’s current numbers a ‘squad’. Hart has been left desperately short, and until sufficient funds are made available to him, he is having to work the market as best he can.

Roy Hodgson’s arrival at Craven Cottage in late 2007 was met with plenty of scepticism from those who remembered his disappointing second season with Blackburn, but he is now rightly regarded as one of the most astute British managers in the game.

Should they manage to bring in enough quality players to reinforce the squad, there will be every reason to hope for a comfortable season in the league and a decent run in Europe and the Carling Cup.

Could be this seasons “Dark Horse”…as well as Sunderland of course!

Result: Fulham WIN  First Goal Scorer: Andy Johnson  Man to Watch: Bjorn Helge Riise (yes, Arne`s “little” bro`)

Best Odds- 7/4 (BoyleSports)

New Godolophin purchase Long Lashes is one of 15 horses entered for Saturday’s skybet.com Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket. The two-year-old joined Saeed Bin Suroor after making a winning debut over six furlongs at the Curragh for Irish trainer Jessica Harrington. And the daughter of Rock Hard Ten could step straight into Group company in the seven furlong contest according to Godolphin’s racing manager Simon Crisford; ” She’s done well since she came over from Ireland,” he said.

Goldolphin in form...

Goldolphin in form...

Other opponents include the Aidan O’Brien-trained pair Devoted To You and Famous, while Henry Cecil is responsible for Albany Stakes third Chachamaidee. Among the other entries are Richard Hannon’s Blue Angel, John Dunlop’s Clarietta and the Barry Hills-trained Sent From Heaven.

Haydock’s feature is the Group 3 totesport.com Rose of Lancaster Stakes over an extended mile and a quarter. The race is famed for horses that haven’t won a Group 1 since their two year old season.

Campanologist ran well to be second in the Hardwicke at Royal Ascot but flopped at Newmarket last time. The fact that Frankie Dettori goes up to Haydock instead of taking rides at his local track Newmarket suggests the Godolphin team expect him to bounce back.

Duncan can be forgiven for his disappointing run at Newmarket last time out as he was too keen over the mile and a half trip, the drop back to ten furlongs will help and he won’t mind cut in the ground. He is the highest rated in the field.

The interesting runner in this race for me, though, is the Michael Bell-trained Allied Powers, who ran his best race since progressing from handicaps when finishing second in the Sky Bet York Stakes last time out. Any rain will enhance his claims and I’ll certainly be doing a “rain dance” for him.

The annual team competition that is the Shergar Cup takes place at Ascot on Saturday for the ninth time with teams of jockeys from Great Britain, Ireland, Europe and the Rest of the World taking each other on in six races. It is a great chance to see riders from around the world competing here in Britain.

A couple of riders who may be less familiar to racegoers are Hiroyuki Uchida from Japan and Malesh Narredu from India, who will be riding in the Shergar Cup for the first time.My selections this weekend are Sent from Heaven in the skybet.com Sweet Solera Stakes and Allied Powers in the Rose of Lancaster Stakes.

Enjoy and good luck!

Strawberrydaiquiri The Selection For Valiant Stakes at York

Fast-improving three-year-old Strawberrydaiquiri will challenge the older fillies for the first time in Friday’s EBF Transformers And Rectifiers Valiant Stakes. The grey, trained by Sir Michael Stoute and owned by Renata Jacobs, impressed many with her comfortable victory in the Coral Distaff on Eclipse day at Sandown where we backed her heavily.

Gary Coffey, the owner’s racing manager, said: “She’s in good form and Sir Michael says she has come out of her last race well. She carries a penalty here but we feel she is entitled to take her chance.”

She`ll be no price but I`m confident she`ll take all of the beating and should be in your combo` bets if you`re squeamish about backing her singly.

Nine Remain In King George Showdown On Saturday

Sir Michael Stoute and Aidan O’Brien dominate the field for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes with three entries apiece. Stoute fields leading fancies Conduit and Tartan Bearer, third in the Eclipse and second in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes respectively, as well as Coronation Cup hero Ask in the Betfair-sponsored feature. One major bookmaker has already revised its prices following news that Cima De Triomphe became the latest casualty for the Ascot showpiece.Conduit has been cut to 13/8 from 7/4, while Golden Sword (4/1 from 9/2) and Look Here (6/1 from 7/1) have also seen their prices trimmed in the diminishing Group 1 field.

Sir Michael Stoute admits it is hard to split Conduit and Tartan Bearer. The former will go into the race as favourite with his stablemate the second favourite in the betting. However, Stoute is getting no clues at home as to which of his charges will come out on top.

“They have never done serious work together. Conduit wouldn’t be spectacular at home but a little more generous than Tartan Bearer who leans towards the lazy side, I’m not in the tipping business, my job is to get them there in the best physical and mental shape I can but I don’t think there’ll be much between them.”

My selection is Tartan Bearer albeit Ryan Moore has sided with Conduit. Don`t ask me why either, I just do!

Diana`s Choice Heads Abu Dhabi International List

Mike de Kock’s South African raider Diana’s Choice leads a 22-strong charge for the Abu Dhabi International. The five-year-old mare will shoulder top weight under Pat Cosgrave as she drops back from Pattern-race company for this richly-endowed handicap. De Kock also fields Stubbs Art in a race that also features ante-post favourite Captain Brilliance from Jeremy Noseda’s yard.

      Roaring Forte, well fancied for the Royal Hunt Cup before being controversially withdrawn at the start, bids to atone for that disappointment, while a number of trainers are double-handed. Michael Jarvis has yet to saddle the winner of the Abu Dhabi International but, in my opinion, he has a live chance with Taqdeyr.The lightly-raced four-year-old was last seen finishing second to subsequent Group Three placed runner Doncaster Rover at Haydock earlier in the month.Taqdeyr did not enjoy the clearest passage that day either, leaving Jarvis full of hope the switch back up to seven furlongs, combined with a little luck, can yield big-race glory. Jarvis said;

“He looked a little bit unfortunate at Haydock as he did get a bit of a bump, The winner won well, though, and he (Doncaster Rover) ran pretty well at Newbury last week so the form looks pretty solid. I think seven furlongs is his better trip but he wouldn’t want the ground too firm at Ascot. It would be to his advantage if there were a drop or two of rain before Saturday but the weather is unsettled so it is hard to tell if he will get it.”

Elsewhere, York course specialist River Falcon will try to win the Sky Bet Dash at the fourth at attempt. Jim Goldie’s nine-year-old has been out of luck since winning at the Knavesmire in August 2007 and he has been unsuccessful in this six-furlong contest in 2004, 2007 and 2008. His best effort came last summer when he was sixth behind Lesson In Humility. However, the 14-1 shot with the sponsors showed his well-being when finishing third to Pavershooz at Ayr on Monday.

Biniou will attempt to maintain his unbeaten record for this season in the same race. Before this term, the six-year-old had only won once for Robert Cowell since his transfer from France at the start of 2007, but has now hit a rich seam of form. A horse who likes to be able to dig his toe in, he scored at Thirsk in May and followed up at Newmarket last Saturday.Cowell reported:

“As long as the ground (currently good to soft) stays the same he’ll run. He’s in super form…he’s absolutely loving it at the moment.”

Predictably for a six-furlong sprint, there is a plethora of Dandy Nicholls entries. The Thirsk trainer has four chances, Tajneed, Valery Borzov, Something and Striking Spirit.Biniou, my choice, is currently a 12/1 chance with the sponsors with Viking Spirit a market mover on Thursday. He is 14/1 from 16s.

      Peter Chapple-Hyam hopes the rains stays away ahead of the Sky Bet York Stakes.He runs Monitor Closely, a fancy of mine for some time now, who finished third to Glass Harmonium in the Listed Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot.  He said;

“Monitor Closely seems in good form and if the rain stays away we will be taking him to York on Saturday. He likes fast ground, so he would not want it wet on the Knavesmire, I wound him up a little bit at home before Royal Ascot, I possibly made him a little bit too keen and it showed in the race. The aim is to get him settled and in a nice rhythm at York. He wants 10 furlongs at the moment, so this race is ideal, and we’ll see whether he wants further as the season progresses.”
