Ascot racecourse bumper crowd on free racing day

Powered by Guardian.co.ukThis article titled “Ascot racecourse attract bumper crowd on free racing day at the track” was written by Greg Wood at Ascot, for The Guardian on Wednesday 27th April 2011 17.26 UTC

It may not have had the Queen or the morning dress, but Wednesday’s meeting here shared one feature with its more glamorous counterpart in June. As a large crowd struggled out of Ascot station, the first thing to greet them was a gang of ticket touts – and this on a day when the track was throwing open its doors and inviting people to go racing for free.

It was not, perhaps, as odd as it seems. With well over 25,000 coming into Ascot’s main enclosure for nothing, there may have been some margin in selling tickets for the Premier enclosure, where the queues for food and drinks were much less daunting. It takes a proper crowd to bring a buzz to the aircraft hangar that is Ascot’s vast grandstand, and on Wednesday, when the standard of the racing went no higher than the Group Three Sagaro Stakes, the hum of excitement was certainly there.

The same card was part of Racing For Change’s “Free Racing” experiment 12 months ago, and many of those who took advantage then had clearly returned, and brought their friends as well. In all, there were 26,595 in attendance, more than 6,000 ahead of last year’s total, and the scheme is likely to continue in 2012.

The warm spring weather, and the fact that so many people are simply taking this week off, must have helped to swell the numbers. But as an advertisement for racing, and Ascot in particular, the timing was perfect, a reminder that for the five days of the Royal meeting in a few weeks’ time there will be nowhere better to be.

“This is one of those rare occasions in racing where there doesn’t appear to be a downside,” Nick Smith, Ascot’s head of PR, said. “We reckon that if today was a normal day, we would probably sell 3,000 tickets, so if 10% of the people coming in for nothing come back and buy another ticket, then it will be worthwhile, but it doesn’t really matter, the whole point is to try to get people to come racing.

“The catchment area locally of people who don’t go racing is huge. People are always thinking nationally and internationally, but there are thousands of people who go past the track every day and it wouldn’t occur to them to go. We’re trying to target them, especially with a day like this.”

Tickets were on sale for the Royal meeting in June, which is a lop-sided event in terms of attendance. The last three days will be close to a sell-out, but the opening day – which includes three Group One races – and Wednesday still have plenty of spare capacity.

“Today is not a novelty,” Smith said. “The top jockeys are here, and people are seeing racing as it properly should be. On the Tuesday and Wednesday at the Royal meeting we’ll get up to 40,000, which means that there’s 40,000 spare, then after that it’s 65,000 plus for the rest of the week. We are selling tickets today, and we will also have everyone’s email address added to our marketing database, so they will all get promoted to.”

There will have been several Royal Ascot attendees on show on the track here, including Richard Hannon’s juvenile Magic City, who is still being aimed at the Norfolk Stakes despite finishing only second behind Miss Work Of Art when a 1-4 chance for the opening race.

Askar Tau, the winner of the Sagaro Stakes, will also be back in June, and is 16-1 (from 20-1) with Totesport for the Gold Cup after a smooth success in one of the most significant trials for the Royal meeting’s feature event.

Marcus Tregoning’s gelding travelled much better than has often been the case, and while his overall form is many lengths behind that of Fame And Glory, the ante-post favourite for the Gold Cup, he is at least proven at the two-and-a-half-mile trip. “He just needs top of the ground,” Tregoning said. “For some reason he just wasn’t moving as well last season but we got him started early and he was very good today.”

Charlie McCann’s Weekend Horseracing Preview, 19 Feb

It hasn’t been the greatest of weeks for horseracing following the Newbury tragedy, but one excellent piece of news was that the veteran grey Monet’s Garden has returned home to Greystoke in Cumbria following a life-threatening illness. Nicky Richards’ stable star won today’s feature Ascot Chase twice in the last four years and although it may not be a vintage renewal we have a fascinating contest to consider.

A great Ascot Card on Saturday

A great Ascot card on Saturday

Pride Of Dulcote (3.00) is unbeaten in two starts over fences and is currently a 16/1 shot with Victor Chandler for the Cheltenham Gold Cup next month. He bypassed the Irish Hennessy last weekend to wait for Ascot and is taken to maintain his 100% record over the larger obstacles, despite the fact that the 2m 6f trip is, arguably, on the sharp side for him. Riverside Theatre finished runner up in the King George last month but, with Kauto Star not at his best, something had to finish second to facile winner Long Run and the suggestion is today’s favourite was flattered by his finishing position.

Ascot Chase: prices from victorchandler.com Riverside Theatre 7/4 Pride Of Dulcote 2/1 Tartak 5/1 Deep Purple 7/1 Big Fella Thanks 12/1 Gauvain 14/1 Racing Demon 33/1 I wasn’t convinced Master Of The Hall (1.50) would appreciate the step up to 3m at Huntingdon last time but the further he went the better he was and I take him to follow up in the four-runner Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase. French raider Royal Tune (2.25) has been raised a stone for his cosy victory at Ffos Las last time but could still be ahead of the handicapper. Ogee is on a very favourable mark but with rain forecast he is best left until the spring when he gets better ground. The weights for the Grand National were unveiled in London on Tuesday and there is a competitive trial for the race at Haydock where Le Beau Bai (3.20) can reverse recent Warwick form with West End Rocker. The latter is currently 25/1 for the National but if he were to win well those odds would shorten dramatically for the Aintree showpiece. Court In Motion (2.10) cannot be opposed in the 3m Novice Hurdle despite giving weight to each of his seven rivals; he was most impressive at Warwick last time and although his stamina must be taken on trust his class ought to see him home in this grade. Connections of Bensalem (2.45) are protecting his handicap mark over fences for another crack at the Festival Chase at Cheltenham next month but en route he can pick up today’s Rendlesham Hurdle with Any Given Day yet to prove his stamina for this 3m trip on soft ground. The nap of the weekend is Mille Chief (3.45) in the Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton. The recommendation receives weight from his principle rivals and if he is to become a realistic contender for the Champion Hurdle he ought to win. Overturn and Celestial Halo will ensure there is a decent gallop and that will suit Alan King’s five-year-old. The stable’s Katchit became the first 5-y-o since See You Then back in 1985 to win Hurdling’s Blue Riband event when he landed the prize in 2008 and the trainer has gone on record as stating Mille Chief is superior to him! Earlier in the card Carlicue (2.35) could have been let in lightly by the handicapper having won his maiden at Ffos Las last month. A winning point-to-pointer McCoy takes over and any further rain would not inconvenience. Vagrant Emperor has failed to confirm the promise he showed at Newbury back in November when returning from a long lay off but a market move would be worth noting. The Hitman on Saturday

The Hitman

It is a big day of racing on Saturday with the Victor Chandler Chase taking Centre Stage at Ascot. All eyes will be on Master Minded, the winner of this race last year is sensational style, but at 4-7 there is no value to be had. Only an investment banker with his bonus burning a hole in his pocket would be lumping on at that price.

It has to be said that Master Minded is exceptional. He sins for me, so its either an each-way bet of a bet without the favourite.  I have always been a fan of Mad Max, who is huge and is trained by the in form Nucky Henderson. I will have a small each-way on Mad Max at 12-1. The Henderson team can win with the stable cat at the minute, but even a place is a better return than the jolly.

For me the best bet of the day is another Nicky Henderson runner at Ascot in Carole’s Legacy at Ascot. She has only finished out of the first two twice in nine starts, having won four of them. She has a rating of 150 and should have too much for these, from a stable who can do no wrong at present.

Amazingly it is a Nicky Henderson horse that completes the treble and is firmly my best bet of the day, Soldatino, who I think could be rather special as we saw at Cheltenham last march when he landed the Triumph Hurdle. Walkon is declared but this is his second preference so weather permitting he will go to Haydock and for me Soldatino is a good thing and the price should be taken early. I fully expect it to shorten in the betting.

Its good to be back, Good Luck!

  • 1 point each way Mad Max, Victor Chandeler Chase, 2:25 Ascot
  • 2 points win Carole’s Legacy, 1:50 Ascot
  • 3  points Win Soldatino, 2:55 Ascot

Charlie McCann’s Weekend Betting Preview

Today’s Betfair Chase sees the reappearance of Gold Cup winner Imperial Commander (3.25) just touched off by Kauto Star in the corresponding race 12 months ago. The Nigel Twiston-Davies trained runner was not at his best when unseating behind What A Friend at Aintree back in the spring but is taken to reverse the placings on this more galloping track.

Free Horseracing Tips

Imperial Commander runs on Saturday

What A Friend is owned in partnership by Sir Alex Ferguson and we at StanJames.com have an enhanced double for United to beat Wigan at Old Trafford and for What A Friend to win at Haydock Park at 5/1. Note we are betting 1/3 odds 1,2 on this event.

Betfair Chase: (place terms: 1/3 the first 2)
8-11 Imperial Commander
11-4 What A Friend
7 Nacarat
8 Planet Of Sound

Tara Royal has disappointed so far this term and I thought Ockey De Neulliac (1.15) made a highly encouraging reappearance at Aintree last month. The Ferdy Murphy stable have tended to need their first run of the season and the hope is that the selection improves markedly for his comeback.

Wogan (2.20) wouldn’t want the ground too soft but improved dramatically last season and is taken to make a winning reappearance for Nicky Henderson. The 10-year-old is 7lbs higher than when winning a valuable event at Doncaster back in January but is lightly raced for one of his years and could improve again.

Nevada Royale was once considered a potential Gold Cup horse but hasn’t seen the track for over two years. He has left the yard of Paul Nicholls in the interim period but is still owned by fearless punter Harry Findlay. A check on the market is warranted.

The David Pipe team have always thought the world of Grand Crus (2.50) and a 6lb penalty is unlikely to stop him following up his impressive Cheltenham win last weekend if over those exertions. His 6l defeat of the highly-touted For Non Stop will necessitate a big hike in the weights (3rd horse a further 11 lengths back) and the step up to 3m for the first time should not inconvenience as connections consider him a 3m chaser in the making.

There is also a cracking card at Ascot where the dual Champion Chaser Master Minded (2.05) reappears 2m 4f. He’s never won beyond the minimum trip in Britain and his stamina looked an issue at Aintree when runner up behind Voy Por Ustedes at this trip a couple of years ago. He faces no easy task against multiple Grade 1 winner Albertas Run but I think his stamina will last and give Paul Nicholls another big race winner.

Nicky Henderson is looking for a hat-trick of wins in the Ascot Hurdle with Champion Hurdle third Zaynar looking for back-to-back successes in the race; in receipt of 8lbs I just favour Karabak (2.35) who is 6lb better off for the 6l he was beaten in the corresponding race last term.

There is a wonderful card at Aintree on Sunday on the only day of the year when there are two races over the National fences. The feature is the Becher Chase with top-weight Notre Pere leading a strong Irish challenge. Scottish National winner Merigo is having his first look at the daunting Aintree fences and connections are targeting the big one back in the spring but at 16/1 I give the nod to Royal Rosa (1.45) ew who was third in the race last year before coming a cropper at Bechers in the National. The selection got going far too late over the Mildmay course on his reappearance and the talented Brian Hughes takes over today.

Fine Parchment (2.20) beat little of note at Uttoxeter last time but jumped well and looks one to keep on the right side of especially with Noel Fehily taking the mount.

Keki Buku (1.10) is the weekend nap having turned what looked a competitive heat at Market Rasen last weekend into a procession. If in the same mood he will take plenty of beating despite the 7lb penalty.

The Hitman on Saturday, Free Horseracing Tips, 20 November

Its a huge day of action on Saturday, not least becuase we see the return of the Cheltenham Gold Cup Winner, Imperial Commander in Saturday’s Betfair Chase. Carl The Hitman Harris marks your card with the best bets of the day…..

Free Horseracing Tips

Kauto Star won the Betfair chase last year

Who can forget last year’s Betfair Chase when Kauto Star was lucky to win, but win he did, will Imperial Commander get a race today?

The reality is that Imperial Commander (3:25 Haydock) has 22 pounds in hand over nearest rival Planet of Sound, he should win this in a canter. There is no value in his price, but this is the banker of the day so whatever we back, we can double up with the Gold Cup Winner.

Dunraven Storm (12:40 Haydock) should trot up in the opener at Haydock, again no value but this is one to watch with a view to bigger prizes in the future. He was hammered by Cue Card last time and I would like to see that form well and truely franked, I think that Cue Card is a show in for the Supreme Novice Hurdle at Cheltenham, even at this stage.

Stagecoach Pearl (1:15)
is a decent horse and I have got this one in my notebook as one to follow. A winner of three of his last four starts, this is a tougher test but I think he will be up to it and will win again despite the rise in the weights and at the prices I make this my best bet of the day.

It is interesting that Master Minded (2:05 Ascot) steps up to 2m 3f, having been campaigned over 2 miles. This is not as cut and dry as most commentators would have you believe, there are plenty of question marks against Master Minded, not least the trip and the disappointing run when we last saw him at Cheltenham in March. In Albertas Run he has a worth opponent and it will not be easy. I think he will win, but it will not be easy. It would be good for him to go to Cheltenham in the best of form.

The Ascot Hurdle is a seriously good race. Won last year by Zaynar who is back to defend his crown, but I think in Silviniaco Conti (2:35 Ascot) he has a serious opponent who potentially could all the way to the top. I think that Paul Nicholls gelding will mainatin his unbeaten record. A very good race indeed here.

Have a great day, good luck.

The Hitman on Saturday, Free Horseracing Tips, 9 October

By Carl Harris

By Carl Harris

There is plenty of racing on Saturday with no fewer than six meetings, but the best of them is at York and Ascot on Saturday. Carl ‘The Hitman’ Harris Mark Your Card with the Best Bets on Saturday, Exclusive to Racing Diary…

The the big race of the day at York, is The Coral Sprint Trophy where Poet’s Place (3:55 York) is taken to come back to form having disappointed in the Ayr Gold Cup, a race that depended heavily on the draw and be the very last horse drawn out of the hat, David Barron’s charge got the worst of it. But on his form from Doncaster, the time before, he is bang in the mix and has a big chance at decent odds.

I will be focusing though on Ascot, where we find the best of today’s action. There are some very good two-year-old races on the card not least the Cornwallis Stakes which can go to Dinkum Diamond (2:30 Ascot). The softer ground here at Ascot will suit Henry Candy’s youngster who was seemingly back to his best last time when and neck second to Zebedee at Doncaster. A reproduction of that group to form should see him home here, with him taking a drop in class.

Free Horseracing Tips

Redford can Win Again

Redford (3:05 Ascot) has been in scintillating form of late clocking up two wins at Ayr and Ascot. He drops back to six furlongs after winning over seven here Ascot two weeks ago. Frankie Dettori is on international duty so Richard Hughes comes in for the ride aboard the improving five-year-old. The draw would be of concern but with the form shown by Redford of late he has certainly earned his crack at pattern company and could benefit from Richard Hughes’ quiet riding style. There will be many keen to take him on but for me I am prepared to follow this in from sprinter, from a yard who has not earned the title of Sprint king for nothing. This could once again represent excellent value.

Michael Jarvis has consistently won with one in four of his runners this season and I think Toolian ( 4:15 Ascot) will land a hat-trick of wins in the competitive Autumn Stakes. I make this one my best bet of the day. The form is in the book and there is no doubt that this is an improving colt who will be suited by the trip underground plus he already has course winning form to his name, the only one in the field. I think that Toolain is a very exciting horse and will take this group 3 on his way to bigger and better things next season.

It should be an entertaining day of racing, good luck!

Weekend Horseracing Preview and Betting Tips

Hardly a vintage weekend of racing but there are a couple of interesting jumps meetings and Ascot holds a competitive card this afternoon featuring a fascinating soft ground sprint over 6f which sees Redford stepping up in class having won a couple of the biggest handicaps of the season in successive weeks last month.

Free Horseracing Tips

Free Horseracing Tips form Racing Diary

Richard Hughes who saw his appeal against a six-day ban fall on deaf ears at the BHA earlier in the week takes over and the genial Irishman will be certainly giving his best; he has promised to fight on in his quest for the jockeys’ title although it is very much advantage rival Paul Hanagan with his ban due to come into effect next weekend.

Redford looks the one to beat but as long as the ground doesn’t dry out too much a chance is taken on last year’s winner Royal Rock (3.05) who was a sick horse for much of the season and looks sure to come on a bundle for his belated seasonal reappearance at Yarmouth. High Standing is another to consider in an excellent end-of-season sprint but the hope is that Chris Wall’s six-year-old is fresher than most and can follow up last season’s victory.

The big betting race of the day is the 12f handicap where the progressive three-year-old Vulcanite (3.40) is on a four-timer and looks to have a cracking draw in another ultra-competitive heat. His best form is on fast ground but he won on rain-softened ground last time and most of his sire’s (Dubawi) off spring relish plenty of give in the ground. One slight reservation his successes have come in small fields and he faces 18 rivals this afternoon.

Masked Marvel (4.15) is currently 33/1 for the Derby with Stan James.com having won his sole start at Sandown when a well-backed favourite. Seven of the eight runners in the field won their previous start and three come into the event unbeaten so it is a very hot heat. The race has been won by some very good colts’ in the past including Nayef a decade ago and this looks a cracking renewal.

Paul Nicholls likes to have winners at the first jumps card of the season at Chepstow and the champion trainer has runners in all seven races on a fascinating card. Merehead (5.45) looks a good thing in the finale but the weekend nap is given to his West Country neighbour Philip Hobbs who also has a strong raiding party crossing the Severn Bridge.

Karasenir (2.50) showed plenty of promise in bumpers but improved for eight flights of hurdles when destroying his field at Market Rasen a couple of weeks ago. He needs to improve again to follow up in this class but he looked a novice of some potential at the Lincolnshire track and is worth following.

There is a cracking novice chase at Bangor-on-Dee where Pouvoir is reported to have come on for his recent Uttoxeter success. Paul Nicholls is double-handed including the likely favourite Otage De Brion but Tara Royal (5.15) was most impressive over the Haydock fences when last seen back in the spring and it looks significant that Donald McCain has booked AP McCoy for the ride in the absence of injured Jason Maguire.

Just For Men (3.10 Hexham) ran his best race first time out last season, and whilst many may think it folly to recommend a horse who hasn’t won for almost three years the hope is that Graham Lee can coax the grey’s head in front in a race that really shouldn’t take too much winning.

Ascot on Sunday

4:10 Ascot Laaheb, Win. The absence of Patkai takes some of the gloss off of this Group Three contest but it’s a race that often throws up an exciting finish and this year may prove no exception. On first impression LAAHEB may have been flattered by his Kempton success having been allowed to dominate but a previous second to Irish Field St. Leger winner Sans Frontieres reads very well and conditions are perfect, so he gets the vote to defy a penalty as he’s entitled to on the ratings. Mikhail Glinka has his first start for Gary Moore and acts on the ground but the Queen’s Vase form hasn’t worked out particularly well and he may be done for speed so a bigger threat could be Whispering Gallery, closely matched with Laaheb and like that rival set to race under his optimum conditions

Totescoop6 Rolls Over

The totescoop6 has rolled over again after two 20/1 winners in the first two legs dashed the dreams of the majority of punters. All Annalena’s victory at Haydock was swiftly followed by Palomar’s shock success at Market Rasen which left just 38 tickets going heading into the third leg.

The bet finally went down after the fourth leg – the Read Paul Nicholls Exclusively on Betfair ‘Prelude’ Handicap Chase at Market Rasen – as Silmi’s victory at 16/1 knocked the remaining two tickets out who had been relying on Martin Todhunter’s That’s Rhythm.

This means there is now £468,366 in the win fund whilst the bonus pot has grown to £861,677. A total of £375,880 was bet into the pool this afternoon but there was good news for the 148 winners of the place fund, each of whom pick up a healthy £507.90 for their efforts.

‘Two big-priced winners meant that this weekend’s Scoop6 was pretty much over before it had begun but there could be as much as £1.75 million up for grabs next weekend when all eyes will be on Newmarket for the Cambridgeshire meeting,’ said totepool spokesman George Primarolo.

The bonus fund of £861,677 is the sixth-largest rollover since the Scoop6 started over ten years ago whilst the combined rollover of £1,330,043 is the 17th highest in the history of the bet.

Frankel is now the 2/1 favourite (from 5/1) with totesport for next year’s 2000 Guineas following a breathtaking performance in the Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes at Ascot this afternoon.

The race was over in a matter of strides around three furlongs out as Tom Queally’s mount turned the race into a procession, eventually winning by ten lengths.

‘Everything about Frankel’s performance in the Royal Lodge oozed class and a victory in either the Dewhurst or the Racing Post Trophy will see him go into the winter as one of the shortest-priced Guineas favourites in recent history,’ said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

White Moonstone battled hard to repel the late challenge of Together and land the Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile at Ascot this afternoon and she has been cut to 6/1 favourite (from 8/1) by totesport for next year’s 1000 Guineas.

The runner-up has been trimmed to 12/1 (from 25/1) for the same race whilst third-placed Theyskens’ Theory is out to 14/1 (from 10/1). White Moonstone remains a 10/1 shot for next year’s Oaks.
