Premier League Preview 2nd-3rd May

Premier League Preview 2nd-3rd May

The Premier League, 2nd-3rd May 2009

After a busy week of European action for three of the Premier League’s Clubs it is now back to League action at the weekend. Manchester United are on the Verge of sealing the Premiership title, leaving only the relegation issues to  be be decided. Today we look ahead to the betting opportunities in the Premier League. The first game of the weekend could have a decisive say in both those issues…

Middlesborough V Manchester United – Saturday 12:45 Sky Sports

Boro were beaten at Arsenal last week and it doesn’t get any easier for the Riversiders as they host Man Utd in the lunchtime kick-off. Defeat at the hands of the Red Devils will surely send Middlesborough, currently second bottom, down and United need to win to be virtually assured of the title.

That is what is at stake, but even if this was a mid-season fixture the league table tells you the tale. The clubs are poles apart and only a Boro fan could give them any chance of getting a result. United have won their last four matches and should be long odds on to win, and they are. Well, you can get 4/7 with Bet365. I think that is a great price, just look at the form book, the league and the team sheet. Liverpool are 1/4 at home to Newcastle. I think United should be the same price so as strange as it sounds 4/7 is a bit of value!

Chelsea V Fulham – Saturday 15:00

This is what I call the Posh London Derby as neighbours Chelsea host Fulham. This should be a classic case of back Chelsea at home. Fulham have had a great season under Roy Hodgeson, currently 7th, a far cry form the club he took over last season. Chelsea will have their minds on the second leg of the Champions League Semi-Final, but they are not mathematically out of the Premier League race. In real terms they have no chance of that, but they will be going all out, to impress and to be there should either Liverpool or Man Utd slip up.

On balance I would suggest that Chelsea will win, but at the price of 8/15 (Bet365) I would advise you to double your stake on Manchester United. I will be laying Fulham, on Betfair, which will give me the draw too.

Manchester City V Blackburn Rovers – Saturday 15:00

BRITAIN SOCCERBlackburn are not yet safe, but took a big leap towards survival last week. Man City are safe and have nothing to play for. Hughes will be looking at the players he has and with the big money to spend the players will either be playing for their futures, or will be resigned to leaving at the end of the season.

I do not know which, but I do know that Blackburn are determined and need the points. Sam Allardyce has seen it all before at Bolton and knows how to stay in the big league.

Man City are Evens to win and Blackburn 3-1. My preference would be the draw at 5/2, but I am going to Lay Man City, with the draw and a Blackburn win at Evens being an excellent bet. They did it for us last week and I expect Blackburn to get something from the game.

Portsmouth V Arsenal – Saturday 15:00

Although Arsenal had a disappointing defeat at Old Trafford on Wednesday they are much better than Porstmouth who are a fairly poor side showing the effects of a long season. Just about safe Arsenal will look to bounce back and go into their second leg with United on a high. Pompey were poor against Newcastle and Arsenal will win this game.

Arsenal will win this comfortably in my view and they are a huge price. 13/10 with Bet365. Huge price and a great bet.

Stoke City V West Ham – Saturday 15:00

Neither team have anything to play for and this end of season game is not one to get involved in. Only fans of either teams will have an interest in the result and although it may be a good game I do not propose to have any interest in the outcome, financially. There are too many lacklustre games of this type at the end of the season.

Tottenham Hotspur V West Brom – Saturday 15:00

harry-redknappWest Brom showed they had some fight and some life left with a good beating of Sunderland. It would be very easy for me to say West Brom are rubbish and will get beaten at Spurs, but I am sorry to say that I think they will get beaten. They are a spirited side but will be down in The Championship next season.

Spurs will be a better side next season and there are players playing for their future. I think that at White Heart Lane Spurs against rock bottom West Brom are a good thing, and at 1/2 (Bet365) are a great price to double up with Man Utd.

Liverpool V Newcastle United – Sunday 13:30 Setanta Sports

alan_shearer_newcastle_managerWhere do we start with this one? This could be any score with Liverpool scoring for fun and leaking gooal galore. Alan Shearer simply must get something at Anfield. Still without a win since his appointment his Newcastle side were, frankly, awful in mid week against Porstmouth. It was a must win game and given a big build up but turned out to be a dull affair. Not good enough and any thoughts of winning at Anfield must seem as distant as those days when this fixture produced two thrilling 4-3 victories for Newcastle. If Newcastle had any chance of scoring I would say don’t rule it out, but you can! Remember this- From Youtube….

Sadly it won’t happen this time!
There is a realistic possibility that Newcastle will be relegated. I really hope they stay up, but they are not good enough and will need to produce something special.

If Shearer had been in charge from the start, I have no doubt Newcastle would be safe. The fate of the club mirrors that of their sponsor and they will need a bailout to save them. Will it come from Owen back at Anfield?

When you look at Liverpool’s run in to the end of the 08/09 season, you will see that they have some fairly easy fixtures, with this being one of them. Liverpool could, if United slip up, win the Premier League. They have only a slim chance of winning the title, but it is all they have to play for. I fully expect Liverpool to win. It could be 3 or 4 or more, sadly for Newcastle.

Liverpool are 1/4, no value but should win. One for the trebles I think.

Sunderland V Everton – Sunday 16:00 Sky Sports

sunderland_badgeSunderland are a club desperate for Premiership football football next season and take on a Wembley Bound Everton side almost certain of a place in Europe. Fifth place in the league provides around £1million more than sixth so I expect Moyes to field a very strong side. The players will be keen to stamp their cup final place claims on the manager.

Sunderland were beaten by West Brom, 3-0. They really needed to win that and must try to get something at home on Sunday. But Everton are now established as a top club, top of that second tier in the Premier League. This is a tight call according to the market with Sunderland Favourites (13/8) and Everton 2/1.

Laying Sunderland is the best bet. If it is a draw, and it may be, then you win.

Monday’s Horseracing Tips…

Mark Johnston-5 Runners at Newcastle

Mark Johnston-5 Runners at Newcastle

It certainly was an up and down weekend for me. I got the Celebration Chase badly wrong on Saturday with Twist Magic hammering Kalahari King, which hurt somewhat. I was definitely down after that.

The Bet365 Gold Cup though lifted the spirits, thanks to the two horses I had backed each-way. Lacdoudal finished third and Hennessey won, under another McCoy master class, just a brilliant piece of riding from the greatest jump jockey of all time.

Once again it proved profitable to read the trainer’s blog with Richard Hannon’s confidence about Paco Boy being justified. The price drifted to an amazing 3.1 about the favourite who was always in control under Richard Hughes, winning cosily by three quarters of a length. The day finished in profit and on a high after the starting so badly, just another ride on the betting rollercoaster!

It is a big week ahead with the 1000 and 2000 Guineas being the highlight at the weekend. I have backed Delegator for the colt’s classic, taking 8-1 before his impressive Craven Stakes victory. There are reports this morning that Brian Meehan may withdraw if the ground is too quick, which has pushed the price out slightly, however, I am of the opinion that this is just a coded message to the Clerk of the Course to start watering. With rain forecast and the watering policies adopted by racecourses the safest bet of all is that Delegator will run and I recommend taking the 5.6 currently available on Betfair. Do it Now, on Betfair and get a FREE £25 to do so…

The Craven win was achieved in a decent time, the final two furlongs were of 2000 Guineas standard and Brian Meehan has reported the colt to have improved for that. Taking today’s price would mean you could trade a profit before the race as Delegator is certain to contract again when declared to run.

So what about today…

well I have one bet today that is just an amazing price, and have put that on the Premier Service. It will win and Win Nicely! Join the Premier Service Today and you will be in profit by the close of play thanks to this one horse! Call 0844 811 2811 to hear more. I can not stress enough how big today’s bet is!

Elsewhere the man to follow today is Mark Johnston who has a good hand at Newcastle. He could have a very good day in the North East. The pick of the Johnston runners for my money is Touchdown (2.50) mainly due to the weakness of the opposition. 2.6 to back on Betfair is no great shakes, but the horse should win this and set up a big day for the Middleham yard. His other runners with big chances are;

  • Box Office- 3.50
  • Thebes- 4.20
  • Al Mugtareb- 4.50
  • Gilded Age- 5.20

They are all market leaders and although I do not think he will win every race, a good day loos assured for Mark Johnston at Newcastle!

Meehan Issues Delegator 2000 Guineas Warning

Delegator Working on the Manton Gallops

Delegator Working on the Manton Gallops

If you took Racing Diary’s advice then you are holding a nice 8-1 about Delegator for Saturday’s 2000 Guineas, and after the Craven Stakes win Brian Meehan’s colt is now a 3-1 market leader for the first classic of the 2009 season.

Brian Meehan today issued a warning that Delegator may miss the Newmarket 2000 Guineas if the ground is too fast.

Meehan said today that  “I will monitor the ground throughout the week, and also keep one eye on the weather forecasts because we’re not prepared to risk Delegator if conditions are too firm,”

Meehan said he was very keen to run Delegator and would love to win the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

I am sure that Newmarket’s Clerk of the Course will have heard Meehan’s words and will be firing up the watering system this week. A look at the weather gives us some optimism. “Rain is forecast for Tuesday, when showers are possible. Wednesday looks dry then the rest of he week will be generally unsettled into the weekend, with outbreaks of rain. Some tactical watering should sort out any worries that Brian Meehan may have.

However for thos of you who followed our advice will have backed Delegator on Betfair and can do one of three things;

  1. Keep the 8-1 and do nothing, hoping Delegator will run in the 2000 Guineas
  2. Trade some of the bet by laying back your original stake. This gives you 5-1 to nothing on the 2000 Guineas favourite.
  3. Lay the 8-1 and take a profit on the race now regardless of the result of the 2000 Guineas.

This is a function unique to Betting Exchanges, Betfair. If youa re not yet a Betfair user you MUST open an account. Do it NOW.

My advice, is to do whatever you feel is right. Personally I have laid back my initial stake and have a 5-1 Free bet on the 2000 Guineas favourite. I can not lose on the race and have a better price than can be had in the current market.

I think that Delegator will run and I think he will win, but in following Racing Diary’s advice you are sitting pretty as the 2000 Guineas approaches.

Classic 2000 Guineas Winners, Newmarket Champions

The 2000 Guineas, Newmarket

The 2000 Guineas, Newmarket

Next Saturday 2nd May is the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. The first Classic of the season. The 2009 2000 Guineas will produce another champion over the Rowley Mile. Who will it be, will it be Delegator, Mastercraftsman or Intense Focus?

We will see on 2nd May, but as the 2000 Guineas approaches I thought it would be worthwhile looking back at some of the illustrious names that have triumphed in the 2000 Guineas over recent years.

2008 Henrythenavigator
He was not favourite but Ballydole’s Henrythenavigator won the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket from New Approach in second. The pair clashed again in The Irish 2000 Guineas where the result was the same. Below is the Boyle Sports 2000 Guineas at The Curragh.

Henrythenavigator won at Royal Ascot and proved a worthy Champion of the 2000 Guineas.

21st Century Winners of the 2000 Guineas.

Golan was the winner of the 2001 2000 Guineas for Kieron Fallon and Sir Michael Stoute. He was a ready winner and a good winner of the 2000 Guineas. The first and second drew well clear of the field and Golan stayed on well up the hill at Newmarket to win the 2000 Guineas. Watch Golan win the 2000 Guineas.

Rock of Gibraltar won the 2002 2000 Guineas for Aiden O’Brien. Part owned by Sir Alex Ferguson Rock of Gibraltar was a wonderful horse who won many top class races, but the performance in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in 2002 was breath-taking. Just watch this and see how he eats up the Rowley Mile Newmarket Turf;

Other Classic 2000 Guineas Moments
1971- The Best Guineas ever?

The 1971 2000 Guineas was a great finish involving two of the best horses of the era,  Brigadier Gerard and Mill Reef. It was “The Brigadier” who won, over a mile this day by three lengths. The two never met again with Brigadier Gerard going on to become one of the greatest milers of all time, and Mill Reef was all conquering at middle distances, including The Derby of 1971. A statue of Bridgadier Gerard now stands next to the parade ring at Newmarket on Rowley Mile Course. Watch this classic race.

The Best Horse I Ever Saw Win the 2000 Guineas.

For me George Washington was the best performance I ever witnessed to win the 2000 Guineas, he won like a true champion, a real enegmatic horse. George Washington met a sad end, but we should remember the good times and they don’t get any better than this;

Some 2000 Guineas Facts (From Newmarket Racecourse Website)
In the 200 runnings to date of The 2000 Guineas there have been a total of 79 favourites or joint-favourites to win the 2000 Guineas – 40% Winning Favs. Favourite backers have not had such a good time over the last 16 years with just two market leaders, Zafonic at 5/6 in 1993 and George Washington at 6/4 in 2006, managing to win, so the trend is against favourites.

The first horse to complete the 2000 Guineas/Epsom Derby double was Smolensko, owned by Sir Charles Bunbury, in 1813. Since then a further 33 horses have completed this double, the most recent being Nashwan in 1989. Below is Nashwan winning The Derby.

Yeats Starts his Bid for Fourth Royal Ascot Gold Cup

Yeates Bids For a Third Vintage Crop Steaks

Yeats Bids For a Third Vintage Crop Steaks

The Best Stayer of All-Time?

Yeats will bid for a hat-trick of Vintage Crop Stakes wins on Sunday. The now eight year-old has won this the last two years and looks for the third in a row at Navan. Aiden O’Brien must have a soft spot in his heart for Yeats.
Yeats will be partnered by Seamie Heffernan who is quoted as saying

“It would be a great win for a third year in a row but I suppose the easiest thing to do is ride the best horse in the race, so I’m looking forward to it.”

It will be a stiff test for Yeats, but if he has retained his ability he will win.

Yeats is the best stayer I have ever seen. It was brilliant to see him win a third Gold Cup and all credit to connections for keeping him in training. After all they are a breeding operation, so they are very sporting!

Lets hope Yeats can win and then make it to Royal Ascot in June.

Friday Horseracing Betting Tips…

Tameer to Stake Derby Claims

Tameer to Stake Derby Claims

Fistral Beach (7.55 Chepstow) has been a beaten favourite in each of his last 5 outings, all at short odds the latest of which was at 1-2. It is a brave man that backs Paul Nicholls’ horse to win today, currently available to back at evens in the win market. Fistral Beach is closely matched on form and official ratings with Alan King’s  China Gold. Fistral Beach must surely win today, but I am not inclined to let him carry any of my money.

The same connections, however, should have a winner in Chepstow’s opener with Hells Bay (2.00).  This one is a similar price to Fistral Beach but is a much more solid proposition and I will be backing this one.

The big race of the day is at Sandown, The Bet365 Group 3 Derby Classic Trial (2.00) where Taameer is a warm order, currently 2.12 to Back.  Only 4 (including joints) favourites have won from the last 21 running in this race but Taameer should make that look a little more respectable by winning today.

audioMARCUS TREGONING SAYS…
Hear what Marcus Tregoning Says about his horse- Click Here (from Sportinglife.com)*

Marcus Tregoning’s colt finished second in Ascot’s Group 3 Autumn Stakes on his last start which is by far the best form on offer.  Malibu Bay from Aiden O’Brien’s battalions is the one to worry about but Taameer should prove to be the class horse in the field. I make Taameer (2.00 Sandown) my bet of the day.

Bet365 are sponsoring the Big Jumps Race Tomorrow and are offering some excellent offers to punters including a huge Free Bet offer.

The weekend promises to be a good one. Sandown stages a mixed card tomorrow, the likes of which are too few and far between in the UK, with the highlight being the Bet365 Gold Cup. I am looking forward to finding you the winner of the big race on the closing day of the jumps season.

Delegator to win 2000 Guineas for Meehan and Spencer

Delegator - 2000 Guineas Favourite

Delegator - 2000 Guineas Favourite

Delegator, a three year old colt by Dansili is trained at Manton by Brian Meehan. Delegator is now favourite for next Saturday’s 2000 Guineas after Delegator won the Craven Stakes, also run at Newmarket.

Delegator has now ran four times in his career, all at Newmarket, it is as if he has been aimed at the 2000 Guineas since being a two year-old.

Delegator was second in his debut maiden to a nice horse, then came back to Newmarket to win with the minimum of fuss. Jamie Spencer then took the ride in the Dewhurst where Delegator finished fifth, with Intense Focus winning. This one is trained by Jim Bolger in Ireland who trained New Approach last year.

Delegator showed he was a different, stronger and better horse as a three year-old when he returned to Newmarket for the Craven Stakes. Jamie Spencer held Delegator up at the back then asked Delegator to quicken up which he did readily to win going away. Delegator’s times indicate that was a good run and the horse was made a worthy favoutrite for the 2000 Guineas.

So can Delegator win the 2000 Guineas?

We took a chance based on the positive reports prior to the Craven and advised that readers back Delegator for the 2000 Guineas. Certainly he is a worthy 8-1 shot.  Confidence amongst Delegator’s connections is high. Brian Meehan, Delegator’s trainer says that Delegator is the horse to beat on 2000 Guineas Day. Jamie Spencer believes that Delegator has what it takes to win the 2000 Guineas.

Jamie Spencer must have Delegator closer to the pace. He will not be able to come from too far back, a point stressed by Meehan. It is the final furlong where the 2000 Guineas is won and lost, but much can depend on what happens in the first furlong.

Racing Diary is delighted with the 8-1 about Delegator for the 2000 Guineas and would still recommend readers to back Delegator to win the 2000 Guineas now!

Lacdoudal goes for the Bet365 Chase that he won in 2006

Lacdoudal goes for the Bet365 Chase that he won in 2006

There are precious too few mixed cards in this country, in my opinion. It is a common occurrence in Ireland and is very popular with punters, The Sandown Bet365 Gold Cup meeting is a wonderful race day with some very good flat and jumps races.

It is of course the final day of the Jumps season and the final betting handicap of a long season is the Bet365 Gold Cup. Philip Hobb’s Lacdoudal won the race in 2006 and bids to win it again as a ten year old. He won off a mark of 151 on Good to Firm ground, which he will encounter on Saturday and will run off a twelve pounds lower mark this time round.

Of course he is now ten, but showed he was in fine form when third behind Can’t Buy Time again Sandown.  I think the Grey can land this race and is quoted as best price 7-1 with sponsors Bet365.

Bet365 will no doubt be offering some special terms on the race and you can take full advantage with the added bonus of £200 of Free Bets from Bet365.
