Dubai Prince Enters Derby Picture

Dubai Prince was a highly impressive winner of the Killavullan Stakes at Leopardstown on Monday. The famous Sheikh Mohammed colours had made a welcome return to the spotlight on Saturday when Irish raider Casamento took the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster.

William Hill have given Dubai Prince opening show quotes of 14-1 for both the Derby and the 2000 Guineas following his impressive victory in the Group 3 Killavullan Stakes at Leopardstown on Monday. The son of Shamardal, who was sent off the 4-9 favourite, spread eagled the field in the final 2 ½ Furlongs of the race – and was eventually returned a very easy 3 ½ lengths winner.

After the race his jockey Pat Smullen described the winner as ‘High class and a real top drawer performer.’ Dubai Prince was a really impressive winner of the Killavullan,’ said Hills spokesman Tony Kenny ‘He’s absolutely destroyed a decent field at Leopardstown – and he must be considered a serious contender for next year’s Derby. We’ve also put him in our Guineas betting, but his pedigree suggests he’ll do better over middle distances.’

2000 Guineas 2011: 4-5 Frankel, 8-1 Casamento, 10-1 Pathfork, 12-1 Dream Ahead, Roderic O’Connor, 14-1 Dubai Prince, Wootton Bassett, 16-1 Peter Martins, Saamidd, Zoffany, 20-1 King Torus, Strong Suit, 25-1 Dunboyne Express, Elzaam, Native Khan, 33-1 Ecliptic, Formosina, Fury, Glor na Mara, Libranno, Samuel Morse, Waiter’s Dream, Zaidan, 50-1 Toolain, Others available (EW 1/4 1,2,3)

Investec Derby 2011: 7-4 Frankel (W.A.R) 10-1 Casamento, 11-1 Picture Editor, 14-1 Dubai Prince, Roderic O’Connor, Seville, 20-1 Carlton House, Saamidd, 25-1 French Navy, Sea Moon, 33-1 Maxios, Nathaniel, Pivotman, 50-1 Midsummer Sun, Voodoo Prince, (EW ¼ 1,2,3)

Dream Ahead Slashed For 2000 Guineas

Dream Ahead was cut from 16s to 5/1 for the 2011 2000 Guineas by Stan James after his effortless success in the Gp 1 Middle Park on soft ground at Newmarket earlier today. He is as low as 4/1 and as high as 8/1 for the 2000 Guineas. Hooray was also an impressive winner.

Hooray Bolts In

Head of PR Charlie McCann: ” Granted soft ground Dream Ahead would go off a very short price for the colts’ classic and he would be an even shorter price now had he proved his effectiveness on good or faster ground. The winner of the Cheveley Park Hooray was cut from 25s to 16s for the Newmarket fillies’ classic but today was all about Dream Ahead.”

Dream Ahead has been slashed to 4/1 (from 14/1) by totesport for next year’s 2000 Guineas following his impressive victory in the Shadwell Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket this afternoon.

David Simcock’s colt produced a breathtaking display, powering up the hill to record a nine-length victory ahead of Strong Suit and Approve. Dream Ahead is now second-favourite behind 2/1 jolly Frankel for the first classic of next season.

‘Both Frankel and Dream Ahead have produced top-class performances in the past week and the sizzling prospect of these two colts clashing in the Guineas will certainly keep punters warm during the cold winter months,’ said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

Elsewhere on the card, Hooray recorded a pillar-to-post victory in the Adnams Cheveley Park Stakes and has been given a quote of 16/1 for next year’s 1000 Guineas despite her trainer’s reservations that she may not stay a mile.

Stan James cut impressive Champagne Stakes victor Saamidd from 16s to 7s for the 2011 Guineas and from 20s to 12s for the Derby following his convincing win in the Gp 2 Champagne stakes earlier this afternoon.

Pathfork and Saamidd have been cut to 8/1 co-favourite (from 10/1 and 16/1 respectively) with totesport for next year’s 2000 Guineas following victories at the Curragh and Doncaster this afternoon.

Pathfork maintained his unbeaten record in the boylesports.com National Stakes but had to battle hard to fend off a determined challenge from Casamento in the final furlong to win by a head.

Things appeared slightly easier for Saamidd as he recorded an impressive success in the Neptune Investment Management Champagne Stakes. The Street Cry colt travelled supremely well throughout the contest and unleashed a powerful finishing kick to win by two and a quarter lengths from Approve.

‘We have seen two visually contrasting performances today from two talented colts and it will be fascinating to see who comes out on top if they both take their chance in the Dewhurst in October’ said totesport spokesman Andrew Griffiths.

In the big betting heat of the day, the Ladbrokes Portland, 4/1 favourite Poet’s Place mowed down Bajan Tryst in the final 50 yards to win by half a length. He is now likely to head for the William Hill Ayr Gold Cup next Saturday and is the new 5/1 favourite (from 8/1) with totesport.

Zoffany Group One Success Puts Him Head of 2000 Guineas Betting

Aidan O’Brien’s Zoffany lunged late to land the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh under a great and patient ride by Johnny Murtagh.

Richard Hannon’s Coventry Stakes winner Strong Suit was sent off the 4-9 favourite to defend his unbeaten record, with Zoffany a 3-1 shot having finished only sixth in the same Royal Ascot contest. All appeared to be going well for Strong Suit as he travelled strongly at the head of affairs for Richard Hughes for much of the contest, but he came under pressure from the one-furlong marker.

Zoffany was cut from 20s to 6/1 favourite for the 2011 2000 Guinneas after his narrow but comprehensive victory in the Gp 1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh this afternoon. Coventry Stakes winner Strong Suit could only finish third and was eased to 8s from 6/1.

Torus Cut for 2000 Guineas after Vintage Performance

King Torus has been cut to 12/1 (from 20/1) by totesport for next year’s 2000 Guineas after running away with the Veuve Cliquot Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

King Torus

Richard Hannon’s colt sat just behind Stentorian early on but put the race to bed with a devastating turn of foot to score by six lengths and is now the second-favourite for the Guineas behind stablemate Strong Suit.

King Torus produced a very impressive performance under a penalty in the Vintage Stakes and although it’s obviously early days yet, Richard Hannon seems to have a strong hand for next year’s classics,’ said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

2000 Guineas, The Full Story

Red-hot favourite St Nicholas Abbey fluffed his lines as French raider Makfi ran out a shock winner of the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. St Nicholas Abbey will now be aimed at The Derby.

Picture

The Mikel Delzangles-trained Dubawi colt was sent off at 33-1 on the back of success in the Prix Djebel at Maisons-Laffitte and was settled in the middle of the 19-runner field by Christophe Lemaire. He made stealthy headway to take the lead passing the furlong marker and stayed on strongly in the closing stages to beat Dick Turpin by a length and a quarter, with Canford Cliffs half a length away in third.

Aidan O’Brien’s hitherto unbeaten St Nicholas Abbey – tagged the next wonder horse by many – never got in a serious blow and could only finish sixth.

Lemaire, who has a great record at Newmarket, said: “I’m very pleased, he won well last time but we were worried about his lack of experience.

“Today his condition had improved and he travelled well all the way. When I got the gap he really kicked. He has a very good turn of foot and is a top-class horse.

“I was not worried about the ground today, good horses go on any ground.”

Delzangles said: “It’s amazing. We liked him as he’s a son of Dubawi and a good looking horse.

“We were waiting for the Djebel to see what happened but we already had an idea we might come here.

“We weren’t really worried about the ground and he’s proved he’s a very good horse.

“Maybe now we’ll come back to England for the St James’s Palace Stakes.

“The French Guineas is a possibility but it’s only two weeks away and he’s only run three times, so maybe we’ll come back for Royal Ascot.”

Richard Hannon was a proud man having saddled the second and third.

He said: “They have both run super races, and you can’t really say too much more than that.

“Richard (Hughes) said the Dip didn’t suit him (Canford Cliffs) but a furlong and a half out I still thought he had won it.

“They proved they are two very good horses and I am thrilled with them.”

Clive Cox was equally pleased with fourth home Xtension, saying: “We are delighted with that and Adam (Kirby) said he felt a lot stronger this year.

“We have got all the Group One races covered and he might go to Ireland unless the ground is too soft.”

Last year’s Racing Post Trophy hero St Nicholas Abbey raced on the heels of the leaders in the early stages, but he could not pick up when it mattered.

O’Brien said: “We’re not disappointed with the performance and I suppose we’d have liked to have seen an even, strong run race for him.

“Johnny (Murtagh) just said he jumped and they did a hack canter for the first half of the race, and that’s not taking anything away from the winner or any other horse in the race.

“But obviously ideally for our horse we would have liked an evenly-run mile as we were using this as a stepping stone to the Derby at Epsom.

“We trained him all year with the Classics in mind. It was easy going for a Derby trial but he was working so well and his times were so good – as good as all the milers that we’ve had.

“That’s why we decided to let him take his chance in the Guineas and when you come for a Classic like this they usually go a pace, but obviously we didn’t put anything in to go an even building pace in front, which we often do.

“Johnny just said they hacked to halfway and then sprinted and then he started staying on again at the end.

“We weren’t winding him up for a mile as we were thinking of the rest of the year and didn’t want to light him up too much.

“We’re happy with the horse.”

Saturdays Free Horseracing Tips, 2000 Guineas Day at Newmarket….

Free Horseracing Tips

By Carl Harris

The first classics of the 2010 Flat Racing season take place at Newmarket this weekend with the colts classic, the 202nd running of the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas taking centre stage. Won last year by Sea The Stars we saw the birth of a Superstar. Could we have another top class colt on show at Newmarket in 2010?

I have previewed the 2000 Guineas in depth already on Racing Diary, but here are your free horseracing tips for the Saturday Newmarket card.

2:25 Jukebox Jury- Hit rather than miss for Mark Johnston’s charge here in the Jockey Club Stakes. Only five runners go to post, which is disappointing considering the £100,000 prize money. On official figures Jukebox Jury is the one to beat and ironically it is stablemate Drill Sergeant who is the one to beat.

3:05 St Nicholas Abbey- I have already discussed St Nicholas Abbey this horse will be my biggest bet of the year and the reasons why. I have included the 2000 Guineas Podcast on this page for you to listen to. Click here to see a full preview of the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas.

Smaller Stakes….

3:40 Borderlescott - Robin Bastiman’s stable star makes his season reappearance as he did last season, when third to Amour Propre, who reopposes again here.

He is capable of winning a race like this, but I am urging caution as he may not be fully wound up. Robin Bastiman I think Amour Propre has much to prove so at the odds Borderlescott is a bit of value, but take it easy!

4:15 Singeur- another on the watch list for this season is Robin Bastiman’s Singeur who was a decent two year-old. He will be a double digit price, possibly 16/1. He disappointed at odds on last time but he was likely to have needed the run. This is a speculative bet at big odds, but small stakes are advised, each-way.

Make no mistake the big bet of the day is St Nicholas Abbey, the biggest bet of the year so far. If he doesn’t win there is an Irish fellow who I will hunt down and inflict some retribution.

Pile On St Nicholas Abbey for 2000 Guineas

Aidan O’Brien is confident would-be superstar St Nicholas Abbey is fit enough to do himself justice in the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on Saturday. I have heard from someone who has seen him on the gallops that he is flying.

Picture

The official line is cautious optimism but I can tell you that behind the scenes confidence is sky high and St Nicholas Abbey will be heavily supported on Saturday. My advice is to have a decent bet on St Nicholas Abbey and I will be doing so with race sponsors Stan James. They will offer best odds guaranteed and also pay out in guineas, which means you get an extra 5p in the pound.

The Montjeu colt rounded off an unbeaten juvenile campaign with a brilliant success in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster and now heads the betting for both this weekend’s Classic and the Derby at Epsom.

The Ballydoyle handler expects his charge to improve for his first appearance of the year, but could not be happier with his current condition.

“St Nicholas Abbey seems to be in good form, his preparation has gone well and he has thrived through the winter,” the trainer told his website www.aidanobrien.ie. Obviously it is his first run of the season and like all of our horses he should improve from the run but he is naturally a very fit, athletic horse and we are looking forward to seeing him run.”

O’Brien has two more strings to his bow in Fencing Master, a narrow second to stablemate Beethoven in last season’s Dewhurst Stakes, and Viscount Nelson, the mount of former Ballydoyle stable jockey Kieren Fallon. Fencing Master seems to be well also, his preparation has also gone very well, he is ready to start back and we hope that he runs well, Viscount Nelson has had a run already this year. We think that he has come forward from his run, we are very happy with him and hope that he runs a good race.”

Those words are are confident enough, but the inside story, make no mistake is that St Nicholas Abbey is fully expected to win and will be well supported. Back him with Stan James for a 5% bonus on winnings, best odds guaranteed and £25 free bet. Stan James are also paying the first 4 home each way for a quarter of the odds!

Here is our betting advice…

Fridays Horseracing Tips, 30 April

Nick Grant from PA Sport marks your card with Free Horseracing Tips for Friday, the Last Day of April.

Free Horseracing Tips

Doncaster on Friday

2:30 Doncaster Watch Amigo looked a certain future winner when finishing with a rattle on his last run and is the one to be with in the crownhotel-bawtry.co.uk Handicap at Doncaster. Walter Swinburn’s four-year-old has very few miles on the clock and the way he came home at Pontefract gave plenty of encouragement for the future. The Royal Applause gelding was doing all his best work at the end on what was just his third run, leaving the impression he would know much more next time. Racing off the same rating, he looks nailed on to be firmly involved at the business end.

4:45 Doncaster Rigidity has the potential for plenty of improvement this season and is taken to make the perfect start in the totepool A Better Way To Bet Handicap. The lightly-raced son of Indian Ridge looked a nice prospect in two runs as a juvenile, progressing nicely from a debut second to score with authority on his second and final run at Yarmouth. It would be no surprise if he ends up much better than this initial mark of 77.

5:15 Doncaster Avenuesnalley ways has every chance of defying a 6lb penalty in the Pegler Yorkshire Handicap. Ralph Beckett’s charge is untried on turf but his profile is one of rapid improvement and everything he has done so far suggests this first try at a mile will see the upward curve continue.

3:00 Doncaster Goolagong has a race like the Atteys Solicitors Maiden Fillies’ Stakes with her compass. She was sent off favourite at Kempton on her reappearance but had no answer to Clairvoyance, who is a decent sort. There might still be better to come and she is entitled to be sharper for the experience.

4.25 Lingfield Storm Ultralight The Godolphin horses seem refreshingly forward at this early stage of the season and Storm Ultralight is one to note in the Free Bet At bluesquare.com Conditions Stakes at Lingfield. This Argentinian-bred runner has scored with ease at Listed level in Uruguay and it would be no surprise to see him prove a useful recruit.

1:40 Lingfield Count Of Anjou was a solid third at the Craven meeting and is hard to oppose in division one of the Free Bet At bluesquare.com Maiden Stakes.

4:00 Musselburgh Moorhouse Lad can be inconsistent and for that reason is only a tentative selection in the Core Oil And Gas Lowball Booth Conditions Stakes at Musselburgh. Bryan Smart’s sprinter has not always lived up to his billing but has some top-notch Group One form in the book and ran well enough last time in a similar race to this at Nottingham. Anything like his close-up ninth in last year’s Nunthorpe Stakes would be more than good enough.

St Nicholas Abbey Heads Field of 19 for 2000 Guineas

Aidan O’Brien’s red-hot favourite St Nicholas Abbey heads a field of 19 runners declared for Saturday’s StanJames.com 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. You can get our betting preview by clicking HERE.

The Montjeu colt was unbeaten in three starts as a juvenile, culminating in a clear-cut success over Elusive Pimpernel in the Racing Post Trophy last autumn. He is one of three contenders from O’Brien’s Ballydoyle base, with Fencing Master and Viscount Nelson also taking their chance.

John Dunlop’s Elusive Pimpernel reopposes following his Craven Stakes success, while Richard Hannon sends Canford Cliffs and Dick Turpin. Godolphin field two runners, with Al Zir hailing from Saeed bin Suroor’s yard. Buzzword is a first Classic runner for second trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni. Mark Johnston is also double-handed as Middle Park Stakes winner Awzaan and multiple all-weather scorer Greyfriarschorista bid to supplement Mister Baileys’ victory for the handler back in 1994.

Xtension, third in the Dewhurst last year, represents Clive Cox, while Pat Eddery will be hoping Hearts Of Fire can bag him his first Classic as a trainer. The line-up is completed by John Best’s pair of Inler and Elspeth’s Boy, Audacity Of Hope, Fair Trade, Lord Zenith, Red Jazz and sole French raider Makfi.

Johnny Murtagh will be aboard St Nicholas Abbey, with Colm O’Donoghue riding Fencing Master. Those arrangements mean that six-times champion Kieren Fallon can renew his association with O’Brien aboard alleged third string Viscount Nelson. Fallon was stable jockey at Ballydoyle for a number of years but he has not partnered on an O’Brien-trained runner since Dylan Thomas won the 2007 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

“It’s exciting to be back riding for Coolmore and Aidan O’Brien,” he told the Daily Mail. It’s a jockey’s dream. They have the best horses in the world and are great people to ride for. I never thought about whether I’d ride for them again, all I think about is riding as many winners as I can. We all know what Aidan can do and, on the big day, he is the trainer everyone wants to ride for. Viscount Nelson is not just making up the numbers. He is by Giant’s Causeway and out of (2001 Oaks winner) Imagine. He has a fantastic pedigree and was just beaten in the Group Two Champagne Stakes.”

St Nicholas Abbey is drawn in stall 12 of the 19 runners, with Dick Turpin and Greyfriarschorista on either side. Elusive Pimpernel will break from stall one, the same draw as last year’s winner Sea The Stars, with Awzaan on his outside. Canford Cliffs will be in gate four for Richard Hughes, with Buzzword in 19 – although the stalls are placed in the centre of the track for the Guineas. Awzaan was unbeaten in four starts over six furlongs last term, including his defeat of top-class Norfolk Stakes winner Radiohead at Newmarket on his final outing.
