Memory 8/1 for 1000 Guineas after Cherry Hinton success

Memory showed an impressive turn of foot to take the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cherry Hinton Stakes at Newmarket this afternoon and is now the 8/1 favourite (from 14/1) with totesport for next year’s 1000 Guineas.

Memory Runs in Harbinger Colours

‘It looked for a minute that Memory had nowhere to go at the furlong pole but she showed an electric turn of foot to get herself out of trouble and rocket to the head of the market for the 1000 Guineas,’ said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

Looking ahead to later in the week, a total of 14 horses have been declared for Friday’s Darley July Cup where Starspangledbanner is the 13/8 favourite with totesport. Kinsale King has been cut to 7/1 (from 15/2) whilst the 2008 winner Marchand d’Or is 16/1 (from 18/1).

With Rebel Soldier still not a confirmed runner for Saturday’s John Smith’s Cup at York, punters have been looking elsewhere for value and there has been further support for both Imposing and Wigmore Hall behind the 9/2 favourite. The former has been cut to 5/1 (from 6/1) by totesport whilst the latter is a 6/1 shot (from 8/1).

HERBERT THINKS HARBINGER CAN BEAT TWO DERBY HEROES

THE big two, English Derby hero Workforce and stable companion Harbinger, unbeaten in three starts this season including last time in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot, remain in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes after yesterday’s scratching stage which was revealed today.

Harry Herbert, the inspiration behind Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, owners of Harbinger, who is a 3-1 shot with Paddy Power, said: “He worked yesterday and just breezed, it wasn’t serious work, just Workforce leading him and easy conditioning exercise. He looked in great shape and he’s obviously as fit as a fiddle at the moment and physically you couldn’t wish for a horse to look better. I’d say the same about Workforce though!

“Harbinger is fine and very well and we haven’t made any jockey plans as yet. It will certainly be discussed over the next few days. At the moment we just don’t know – with Ryan Moore riding Workforce there’s no shortage of people who are around about. Sir Michael will lead on this and he’ll talk to me about it and hopefully we’ll have an answer within a week or so.

“Everything has gone very much according to plan since the Hardwicke – he’s in great form and couldn’t look better. The lovely lass – Marie – who looks after him says he feels fantastic and he certainly looked that yesterday. We’ll just keep everything crossed that he can stay in one piece for the next fortnight and a bit and can line up on the day and in the world of syndicate ownership, this is the ultimate dream to have a runner. Being second favourite at the moment is what it is all about and we’re really excited.

“The Hardwicke was an amazing day, albeit very nerve racking as he went in there a hot odds-on favourite. The idea of having a runner at Royal Ascot that’s odds on is an interesting one. He looked great that day and was immensely impressive and whatever anyone says, those were Group horses behind him. He stamped his authority in great style and thankfully ate up and came out of the race very well. And now it’s time to move on up to the Premier League and see if he can compete at Group 1 level and the King George seems like a good place to start.”

Asked if he thinks Harbinger can beat Workforce in the King George, Herbert responded: “I would say that certainly he can beat Workforce and we wouldn’t be running if we didn’t think that we can beat Workforce. Looking at him [Workforce] yesterday probably for the first time up close, he’s an immensely impressive horse, a very powerful animal but like all horses they have different styles of running.

“We know that Harbinger has good cruising speed and a real good turn of foot. We’d like to think that we’ll be able to use that and I’m sure he’ll show it at Ascot but it’s not just the two of them and there’s a few others as well and we’ll hope that we come off best. It’s great to be competing in such a prestigious race and actually to be competing against two Derby winners is what this is all about. Of course I think that we can beat them but we have immense respect and admiration for the two Derby winners.”

Workforce is 11-10 favourite for the King George with Paddy Power, while Irish Derby winner Cape Blanco is 5-1.

Paddy Power himself said: “So far in the Pretty Polly and the Eclipse, the older horses have come out on top. The King George is turning into a mouthwatering clash which should give us a lot more clues about the relative merits of the different generations.”

Special Duty Wins 1000 Guineas in Stewards Room, Fair Result

Special Duty was awarded the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas at in the Newmarket stewards’ room after Jacqueline Quest was first past the post. It was a fair decision in our view.

1st 18 Special Duty 9-2 F
2nd 7 Jacqueline Quest (IRE) 66-1
3rd 4 Gile Na Greine (IRE) 25-1

The front pair pulled clear on the stands side as the field split into two groups, but it was Henry Cecil’s Jacqueline Quest who prevailed by the narrowest of margins. However, a stewards’ inquiry was called after Cecil’s filly drifted into the middle of the track, taking the French challenger, ridden by Stephane Pasquier, with her. After around 10 minutes, the stewards declared that the 9-2 favourite had been awarded the race to give trainer Criquette Head-Maarek a fourth success in the fillies’ Classic.

Sponsors Stan James were left counting the cost of the decision by the Newmarket Stewards to disqualify the Henry Cecil trained Jacqueline Quest in the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas.

Head of PR Charlie McCann: “As we pay first past the post on British racing we have also paid out on Jacqueline Quest, but the decision to award the race to the antepost and day of the race favourite Secret Duty gave punters the fillup they needed after the 2000 Guineas; it was a brave but correct judgement. We were 175/1 for the French to win both weekend classics and, fortunately for us, it was friendless!!

3:05 Newmarket, StanJames.com 1000 Guineas – Rumoush, Can Keep it in the Family!

If ever a Classic had a wide-open look to it, the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas is it.  An argument can easily be made for half a dozen in the Newmarket feature but preference is for Rumoush to provide a welcome return to the big time for trainer Marcus Tregoning. The Derby-winning Lambourn handler suffered a rotten 2009 but things have started a whole lot differently this year. A beautifully-bred half-sister to last year’s winner Ghanaati from the family of Nashwan, Rumoush had just one outing as a juvenile, demonstrating plenty of ability in scoring at Lingfield from two subsequent winners. She reappeared in the Feilden at Newmarket’s Craven meeting and convinced connections the Guineas should be the next port of call with a commanding victory over a field which included Oaks favourite Timepiece. The tall Rahy filly has stacks of scope for further improvement, and we know Tregoning can definitely do the job when he gets the right animal.

5:05 Newmarket Principal Role- Henry Cecil strengthened his hand in the three-year-old fillies’ division earlier in the week and can add to his riches with Principal Role in the Haveago@StanJames.com Pretty Polly Stakes. This twice-raced daughter of Empire Maker ran a really good race in the Nell Gwyn behind Music Show and Blue Maiden and is fully entitled to progress again, not least for the extra three furlongs.

2:40 Newmarket Strawberrydaiquiri sets a high standard in the StanJames.com Dahlia Stakes. It’s very much ladies day on the Rowley Mile and Sir Michael Stoute’s four-year-old is expected to play a big part in the top distaff events this year. Unraced at two, she ended the last campaign with fourth in the Group One Sun Chariot Stakes and as her trainer excels with older horses it would be folly not to expect good things this term.

2:55 Salisbury Shewalksinbeauty There are few safer investments at the moment than a Richard Hannon two-year-old so Shewalksinbeauty should take all the beating in the totequadpot Fillies’ Conditions Stakes at Salisbury. This filly looked particularly useful when recovering from a slow start to power home at Lingfield.

5:55 Hamilton Megalo Maniac is not the easiest to win with but having gone close the last twice it is not hard to see him taking a leading role in the John Quigley Memorial Handicap at Hamilton. Dropped 2lb for a narrow reverse at Southwell, if things fall right he is on a winning mark and the Richard Fahey stable continues in red-hot form.

Doncaster on Friday

2:30 Doncaster Watch Amigo looked a certain future winner when finishing with a rattle on his last run and is the one to be with in the crownhotel-bawtry.co.uk Handicap at Doncaster. Walter Swinburn’s four-year-old has very few miles on the clock and the way he came home at Pontefract gave plenty of encouragement for the future. The Royal Applause gelding was doing all his best work at the end on what was just his third run, leaving the impression he would know much more next time. Racing off the same rating, he looks nailed on to be firmly involved at the business end.

4:45 Doncaster Rigidity has the potential for plenty of improvement this season and is taken to make the perfect start in the totepool A Better Way To Bet Handicap. The lightly-raced son of Indian Ridge looked a nice prospect in two runs as a juvenile, progressing nicely from a debut second to score with authority on his second and final run at Yarmouth. It would be no surprise if he ends up much better than this initial mark of 77.

5:15 Doncaster Avenuesnalley ways has every chance of defying a 6lb penalty in the Pegler Yorkshire Handicap. Ralph Beckett’s charge is untried on turf but his profile is one of rapid improvement and everything he has done so far suggests this first try at a mile will see the upward curve continue.

3:00 Doncaster Goolagong has a race like the Atteys Solicitors Maiden Fillies’ Stakes with her compass. She was sent off favourite at Kempton on her reappearance but had no answer to Clairvoyance, who is a decent sort. There might still be better to come and she is entitled to be sharper for the experience.

4.25 Lingfield Storm Ultralight The Godolphin horses seem refreshingly forward at this early stage of the season and Storm Ultralight is one to note in the Free Bet At bluesquare.com Conditions Stakes at Lingfield. This Argentinian-bred runner has scored with ease at Listed level in Uruguay and it would be no surprise to see him prove a useful recruit.

1:40 Lingfield Count Of Anjou was a solid third at the Craven meeting and is hard to oppose in division one of the Free Bet At bluesquare.com Maiden Stakes.

4:00 Musselburgh Moorhouse Lad can be inconsistent and for that reason is only a tentative selection in the Core Oil And Gas Lowball Booth Conditions Stakes at Musselburgh. Bryan Smart’s sprinter has not always lived up to his billing but has some top-notch Group One form in the book and ran well enough last time in a similar race to this at Nottingham. Anything like his close-up ninth in last year’s Nunthorpe Stakes would be more than good enough.

Through The Card For Friday;

BANGOR: 5.50 Kanad, 6.20 Osric, 6.50 Chicago Alley, 7.20 Picaroon, 7.50 Belligerent, 8.20 Karky Schultz.

CORK: 5.00 High Award, 5.30 The Mighty Atom, 6.00 Sir Gerry, 6.30 Rublevka Star, 7.00 Echoes Of History, 7.30 Art Broker, 8.00 Be My Storm.

DONCASTER: 2.30 WATCH AMIGO (NAP), 3.00 Goolagong, 3.35 Bollin Greta, 4.10 Murura, 4.45 Rigidity, 5.15 Avenuesnalleyways.

FONTWELL: 5.40 Bid Art, 6.10 Jetnova, 6.40 You Can Of Course, 7.10 Pearly Star, 7.40 Cockatoo, 8.10 Bolton Hall.

LINGFIELD: 1.40 Count Of Anjou, 2.10 Jambo Bibi, 2.40 Seyaaq, 3.15 Eisteddfod, 3.50 Summerinthecity, 4.25 Storm Ultralight, 4.55 Island Sunset, 5.25 Fairy Flight.

MUSSELBURGH: 2.20 Jigajig, 2.50 Trading, 3.25 Fujin Dancer, 4.00 Moorhouse Lad, 4.35 Park’s Prodigy, 5.05 Malcheek, 5.35 Mr Lu.

1000 Guineas and 2000 Guineas Betting Preview

Free Horseracing Tips

By Carl Harris

This weekend marks the first classics of the 2010 flat season with the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas on Saturday and the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas on Sunday.

Last season we saw Sea The Stars get the better of Delegator, little did we know then what Sea The Stars would go on to do. All the talk this year is about St Nicholas Abbey, who was sensational when winning the Racing post Trophy at Doncaster. All ready favourite for the Derby St Nicholas Abbey has the weight of expectation riding on his seasonal debut in the 2000 Guineas. Not everyone thinks he is a sure fire winner of the 2000 Guineas however.

Kieren Fallon believes St Nicholas Abbey will have to be a “freak” if he is to make a winning return to action in the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on Saturday I have to say that he looked just that in the Racing Post Trophy last season, just watch this…..

Aidan O’Brien‘s Montjeu colt was unbeaten in three starts as a juvenile and a devastating display in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster catapulted him to the head of the betting for both the 2000 Guineas and The Derby. However, Fallon, able to form an unbiased view as he currently has no ride in the season’s first Classic, feels the quicker ground St Nicholas Abbey will encounter this weekend leaves a question mark over his chances.

Aidan O’Brien and Johnny Murtagh will have a fair idea about how he handles the going, so unless we hear wildly pessimistic statements from them I would not worry about the ground too much.

Elusive Pimpernel was well behind at Doncaster and he came out and won the Craven Stakes easily. Canford Cliffs was a good Coventry winner but I doubt he stays the mile following what we saw in the Greenham Stakes. Awzaan could be anything. The Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned Awzaan is one of only a handful of previous Group One winners in the race. Although Mark Johnston’s Middle Park Stakes winner has yet to go beyond six furlongs in competitive action, the owner’s racing manager Angus Gold is confident the step up to a mile will not be beyond him.

2000 Guineas

Will we see St Nicholas Abbey Win in These Colours?

There could be a very good colt in this year’s StanJames.com 2000 Guineas but from what I have seen and heard about St Nicholas Abbey I am firmly in his camp.

Verdict: Back St Nicholas Abbey to win the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas.

StanJames 1000 Guineas Betting

Rainbow View was hot favourite last year

1000 Guineas Preview….

I am always wary of the 1000 Guineas. The filly’s race is never straight forward. Last year Rainbow View was the hot favourite for the race but she disappointe and her owner didn’t run Fantasia so confident he was of winning. This year we have a worthy favourite in Special Duty.

The Criquette Head-Maarek-trained filly has been the ante-post favourite since her brilliant Cheveley Park success last October. Although she was defeated on her return at Maisons-Laffitte, Head-Maarek will be striving for a fourth success in the fillies’ Classic Luca Cumani’s Seta, the mount of Kieren Fallon, and impressive Nell Gwyn winner Music Show lead a strong home challenge.

I think there is a chance Special Duty could be the best of these, but I am not one for piling in to the three year old fillies at this stage of the season.

Verdict: Back Special Duty to win the 1000 Guineas.

Trainer Shake Up at Godolphin

Godolphin are to split their string in both Newmarket and Dubai with the addition of Mahmood Al Zarooni to the training roster alongside Saeed bin Suroor.

Picture

The Dubai national has been assistant to Bin Suroor for over a year and will take charge of Moulton Paddocks in Newmarket, where Godolphin were originally based, when Sheikh Mohammed‘s operation return to Britain in three weeks’ time.

Former camel jockey Ahmed Ajtebi will primarily ride for Al Zarooni with Frankie Dettori maintaining his partnership with Bin Suroor.

Al Zarooni will have his first runners from his Al Asfa stables on the outskirts of Dubai this weekend with seven representatives on Dubai World Cup night, including Allybar in the World Cup itself. Al Zarooni said:

“I am very grateful to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for giving me this opportunity.  It has been a privilege being part of the Godolphin team under Saeed bin Suroor for the past year, and I now look forward to the challenge of operating my own stable.”

In a statement, racing manager Simon Crisford said: “Mahmood has been an important part of the team for some time and has been closely involved with the training of horses he will saddle on World Cup night.

“With more two-year-olds coming through the system the time is now right for Godolphin to employ two trainers. Godolphin has already been allocated a team of two-year-olds for 2010 but there are more due to come in and Mahmood will be taking care of many of those horses. Saeed and I talked it though with Sheikh Mohammed and we all agreed it would be a good idea to have another trainer.”

Crisford added at Godolphin‘s open morning at Al Quoz:

“Saeed trained more than 200 horses last year and with some more coming in he didn’t want to have so many horses. It is time to share the workload and Mahmood has been a great asset while working under Saeed. We will have two stables both here (Dubai) and in Newmarket and have a sufficient number of horses to justify it. Mahmood will have a few more two-year-olds but the allocation of horses will take place as and when. Primarily Frankie will ride for Saeed and Ahmed for Mahmood. There will be occasions where they swap but largely that is how it will work although nothing is set in stone and there are no retainers.”

Bin Suroor will continue to operate Godolphin‘s American barn, with the likes of Andre Fabre and Mark Johnston saddling a number of Sheikh Mohammed’s juveniles. Meanwhile Godolphin suffered a set back before the season has started.

Kingsfort, Godolphin‘s leading chance for the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas, has been ruled out of the first Classic of the season on May 1 after meeting with a setback.

Picture

Sheikh Mohammed snapped up the War Chant colt after his second career started yielded success in the Group One National Stakes at the Curragh, and he was just 14-1 with Coral to provided Godolphin with their first 2000 Guineas win since Island Sands in 1999. Racing manager Simon Crisford said:

Kingsfort is not going to make the Guineas as he has had a setback. He had some smart form last year, beating the likes of Chabal, and will be back for the second half of the season.”

Another missing from Godolphin‘s Classic squad is Flying Childers heroine Sand Vixen. Crisford added of the Doncaster winner:

“She was always going to be a horse for the sprint races, but has also had a setback. She will not run in the 1000 Guineas and we will get her back for the sprint races later in the year.”

However, trainer Saeed bin Suroor still has some useful shots to fire in the Classic division with Passion For Gold quoted as the 10-1 second favourite behind St Nicholas Abbey for the Investec Derby.

The Thirsk maiden winner was beaten by that rival in the Beresford Stakes last summer but progressed when tackling heavy ground and 10 furlongs for the first time to land the Criterium de Saint-Cloud.

“He will probably start off in the Dante and is potentially a nice horse,” Crisford said. I don’t think he necessarily needs soft ground but he did appear to improve on it last year. St Nicholas Abbey did make him look slightly one-paced, though, and he will need to step up again this year.”

Godolphin also have a strong Oaks contender in the shape of Hibaayeb who joined the team after landing the Fillies’ Mile for Clive Brittain.

“She is a possible for the Oaks and a mile and a half will suit her best,” commented Crisford. She may or may not start off in the Guineas but has done well through the winter.”

Long Lashes was another acquisition last year with the Rock Hard Ten filly joining Bin Suroor from Jessica Harrington’s stable. She looked good winning the Sweet Solera first time up but floundered on soft ground afterwards and was then well beaten in the Fillies’ Mile.

“She looked good mid-summer but we ran her on soft ground at the Curragh in the Moyglare and she wasn’t the same afterwards,” Crisford continued. She is on course for the 1000 Guineas and would be an outsider in that race.”

Although Kingsfort is out of the 2000 Guineas, Sheikh Mohammed could still be well represented by the likes of Chabal, Poet’s Voice and Emerald Commander.

Well, Delegator what can I say…yesterday’s 2000 Guineas was won well by Sea of Stars, a half brother of Galileo who will be better over further and will run in The Derby. We can close and I am sure that a few each-way bets were landed.

So now its the 1000 Guineas where Rainbow View (3.15) is scortching hot.. As good a 2 year-old as we have ever seen, unbeaten in all her four starts where she won a Group 1, slamming Fantasia, easily.
