What a great month it has been! Looking forward to July now but Royal Ascot was special and this season is one of the best for years!
Here's to a super July!

New Approach is OUT of Irish Derby
It’s a shame and its not much of a Classic now. Tartan Bearer has been put in as favourite and should win readily, but it’s a crying shame. Nothing more to say, Tartan Bearer was four and half lengths clear of the rest and there is no reason for anything from Epsom to get closer.
The 5/4 on offer early is too big and he will likely start odds on. So take the 5/4 if you can.
Great race at Sain Cloud today - watch it at 3-28 (why not 3-30) where I think Soldier of Fortune will be another Ballydoyle G1 winner!

The Northumberland Plate looks a difficult puzzle to solve, but im sticking with Bucket Tingi at 15/2 each way.
The Pretty Polly is somewhat different and Lush Lashes was not declared leaving it clear for Finsceal Beo to win at 2/1.
This is what Irish-racing.com say about the race; Fillies take centre stage on the second day of the Curragh's Irish Derby meeting, with the Audi Pretty Polly Stakes the feature of the seven-race card. Jim Bolger's dual 1000 Guineas winner Finsceal Beo seems to have returned to form of late following a couple of disappointing efforts towards the back-end of last season. The daughter of Mr Greeley chased home Duke Of Marmalade here on her penultimate start, before finishing a close third in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot behind Haradasun. She is back among her own sex in this Group One contest and it would be surprising if she does not get involved. Aidan O'Brien's recent Group Three winner Ice Queen is dangerous to dismiss and Dermot Weld saddles Irish 1000 Guineas runner-up Mad About You, while British raider Promising Lead could also make her presence felt.
FINSCEAL BEO @ 2/1 Looks a huge bet!

I have had a lot of emails asking how you get a trainers licence. Below is what is required to to get a licence.
In terms of qualifications, an NVQ Level 3 in Racehorse Care and Management is essential. As is a Licence to train from the British Horseracing Authority. You will also be required to attend Trainer's courses at the British Racing School. When you apply for a Trainers Licence, the British Horseracing Authority will also expect to see a business plan which proves you have considerable demand for your services, leases or agreements for use of a yard, and a successful inspection report from the British Horseracing Authority. You’ll also need professional references and a financial statement that confirms you either have substantial working capital or overdraft.
Once you have the GNVQ Level 3 you must attend 3 courses of one week.
Module 1- Health and Safety and Staff Management
Module 2- Business and Management
Module 3- Horse Training and Equine issues
Then it is down to business!
Like I said yesterday I plan to offer something different! More of that in due course.
Tomorrow we will look at the Northumberland plate in detail!

I have been working at the stables for the past few weeks, as I move towards my goal of being a licensed trainer, and it really makes you realise what special animals horses are.
Each one has its own personality and there are so many variables that can influence their performance and it is easy to forget this in the betting fuelled world of horseracing.
I have only admiration for the trainers who consistently achieve results and those who get the best out moderate horses. Similarly I have growing distain for those that abuse their horses, running them when clearly they should not be, or running them far too often.
At the moment I have three of our horses stabled, Turn of Phrase (who I adore), Cream of Esteem and a filly of Sharon’s (my wife) who may turn out to be good. These are there so I can get competent and when I get the green light to be licensed I will have a further 6 or 7 to go to war with.
What we then plan to do is to relaunch The Viking Racing Club, but as a different and new concept. A small number of members will have a share in the horses and share in the operation more than is possible anywhere else. Of course betting on our runners will be at the forefront of the operation and I plan to land some monster gambles!
First things first, and I need to get the training career underway!

Group One Weekend in Ireland
Saturday is the Pretty Polly Stakes at The Curragh. There are only 13 entries but Jim Bolger holds the key. He has the best two (by some way) in the race in Finsceal Beo and top three year old Lush Lashes. The race is over 1m 2f- remember Lush Lashes won the Musidora easily over this distance and won at Group One Level at Royal Ascot last week. Finsceal Beo also ran at Royal Ascot with credit. Nothing else entered is anywhere near the class of the Bolger pair.
What will he do? My guess he will run them both.
Lush Lashes is owned, trained and was bred by Bolger, whilst Finsceal Beo is owned by the larger than life Michael Ryan. Bolger will want to win this race and will surely do so.
Sunday however is when the real act ion takes place in the Budweiser Irish Derby. The first six home at Epsom will line up, including New Approach the winner. This will be a cracking race, and horses fancied for the Derby will have another chance. Casual Conquest, Curtain Call and the unlucky Tartan Bearer will all get another crack at New Approach.
The Curragh is a completely different track to Epsom and we may see better from those that could not handle the undulations. New Approach though is the class act and if we can get a good price then I will be lumping on again. I doubt he will be 6-1 again.
Re-Watch the Derby at Epsom, see what is instore for Sunday!

Northumberland Plate Entries For Saturday...
I was in Malton this morning, in fact I am there every morning now as I am powering towards my aim of being a licensed trainer, and I hear that the stable are bullish about the chances of Carte Diamond for the Northumberland Plate. The horse has ran with credit in its two runs this season after returning from a long lay off. There is no guarantee that it will stay this trip, having looked more a 12-14 furlong horse than a 2 miler for me, though he has won over hurdles over the two mile trip it would appear that Brian Ellison feels he will get the trip. This is a race that Ellison wants to win and he also has Tilt entered who ran with credit last year.
The race looks as competitive as ever and entered at the five day stage is an interesting runner trained in France by John Hammond called Far From Old. When John Hammond brings them over they usually run really well and this horse looks highly progressive and very interesting.
Bukit Tinggi is favourite following his big run at Royal Ascot last week. The four-year-old, who had won at Haydock and York earlier in the season, finished fourth at Ascot.
However, that race was over two and a half miles and a return to two miles is expected to see him in a much better light. He will get a low weight if the top weight does run.
Northumberland Plate, betting: 7-1 Bukit Tinggi, 8-1 Arc Bleu, Mamlook, Highland Legacy, 9-1 Desert Sea, Tilt, Carte Diamond, 10-1, Double Banded, 11-1 Ajaan, 12-1 Gee Dee Nen, Missoula, Far From Old
Highland Legacy is entered, after he was strongly fancied for the Chester Cup, but did not handle the course that day, he could be well handicapped for Michael Bell who of course won this in 2007 with Juniper Girl in a last gasp finish under apprentice Luke Morris. Watch the 2007 Plate Below
The Chester Cup was won by Bulwark who ran well over almost 6 furlongs further at Royal Ascot. Ajaan of Henry Cecil’s finished behind Bulwark in that Ascot race and clearly did not get the extreme trip that day but is a major player in the Plate market. Bulwark is unlikely to run I understand. Bukit Tinggi is another who is sure to get the trip and could be well handicapped with a weight of only 8 stone 2 pounds and is my pick for the race.
Take 7-1 Now on Bukit Tinggi is my bet!
Tomorrow we will look at the Irish Derby and Oaks.

Last Week at Royal Ascot really does make you realise how special top class racing and the big meetings are. Its down to earth with a bump. This week we have much less to look forward to, but the weekend is the Irish Derby and the Irish Oaks, which could be another good weekend for Jim Bolger.
The weekend is not bad, not a patch on Ascot but it is the Northumberland plate on Saturday, known as the Pitmans Derby it is a staying handicap over 2 miles. I am not a great fan of the race, but it is a good betting heat. We will look at the race in detail later in the week.
Today is pretty modest stuff, last week we were looking forward to Ascot.
One thing I must mention are the Friday Evenings at Newmarket. After racing they put on a concert, and last Friday was Bryan Adams, who I am told was excellent. There are some big acts coming up. The Newmarket website shows the forthcoming acts, which include Jools Holland, Girls Aloud, The Feeling and Boyzone. This is an innovation that draws the crowds, well done I say.

Well, what can I say, Royal Ascot was just fantastic for racing lovers, and if you read the diary you had a few winners, if you were with Telewin you had an amazing five days.
The Ballydoyle team of Aiden O’Brien and Jonny Murtagh had no fewer than six winners, four of which were Group Ones. They are clearly way ahead of anyone else and have an embarrassment of riches. Their winners this week were;
Haradasun (G1)
Henrythenavigator (G1)
Duke Of Marmalade (G1)
Yeates (G1)
Macarthur
Honolulu
There were more Irish trained winners as Jim Bolger and Kevin Manning had a double on Friday, including the Group One winner Lush Lashes. The only Group One to stay in the UK was Kingsgate Native who won Saturday’s Golden Jubilee.
It was a great start to the day as Free Agent was a Royal Winner at the Royal meeting, which was a Double Maximum bet for The Telewin Service at 7-2.
Telewin had a fantastic Royal Meeting. Our Winners this week were;
Jonny Murtagh – top jockey – 6/4.
Henrythenavigator (advised to take the early price)
Duke of Marmalade (6/4 early price advised- Won Evens)
South Central (advised 7/2 Won 11/4)
Yeates (Advised 6/4- Won 11/8)
Cuis Ghaire (advised 6/4 Won 8-11)
Free Agent (Won 7-2)
Macarthur (Advised 7/4 Won 6/4)
This is a service that is Free to register and customers Pay only a Flat Fee per Winner. This fee is £10 (+Vat)
It certainly has been a fantastic week, next week it’s the Irish Derby and Oaks, it is a great time of year.

Spacious has Plenty of Room for Improvement
Second in the 1000 Guineas in her first start as a Three year old, Spacious has the chance to take the Group One Coronation Stakes today at 3.45. There are some good fillies in the race, Infalable who was fourth, Lush Lashes, sixth and the unlucky Nahoodh who has her first start for Mark Johnston today. Spacious though showed guts, class and speed when second to Natagora at Newmarket and I think Spencer will have learnt a lot about her and with the expected improvement she could win this stylishly today. 3/1 looks a good price.
Yeats
Yeats did what we said he would do, but he did it with courage, determination and above all class. No matter who rides him, he does it at Ascot. Three successive Gold Cups, for Fallon, Kinane and now Murtagh. When Geordieland came alongside he just looked him in the eye and said you aint having my crown yet pal and pulled away. It was a pleasure to see and history was made yesterday- just like we told you.
BBC – PLEASE GET A GRIP
The BBC racing coverage in the main is pretty good, Claire Balding is truly excellent, knows her stuff and Willy Carson, you can’t really argue with. However there are two things that let it down; firstly the camera work, or more accurately the direction.
In the final furlong they close up on the leader, but then we cant see what is happening behind, close finishes are expected and you want to see what is coming to challenge, this is a new development and frankly not conducive to flat racing. Fine over jumps when the leader is 15 lengths clear at the last, but not in a flat race surely.
The second element that is disappointing are some of the questions posed to trainers and jockeys. This week Richie Persad has asked some shocking questions. After taking a Group One Race over a mile he asked Jonny Murtagh if the the distance suited Haradasun, he then asked John Gosden if Mitchita would take on the colts, after Gosden has spelt out his targets for the season, plainly all fillyes races. The look on Gosdens face said it all.
But the worst and clearly most annoying incident was after Yeats had won his third Gold Cup, was would he be back for a fourth. Clearly asking the trainer he was told its not his decision, then asked the Jockey, then asked the co-owner who just wanted to celebrate. The clearest indication of the owners annoyance was that Mr John Magnier declined an interview. When you have just won like that you want to savour the moment, reflect on the momentous occasion. How the hell do they know how the horse has come out of a tough race and for a breeding operation they have many things to bear in mind. I thought it was pathetic how they kept hammering the same question home when they clearly had no chance of an answer.
Many moan about the fashion, but that is for a wider audience and there is no problem with that for a public service broadcaster, but I for one expect better racing coverage from the BBC, certainly you should not have to feel embarrassed on their behalf.

Day Three- History Could be Made Today...
Ryan Moore Still Winnerless at Royal Ascot
You may be interested to know that Ryan Moore is yet to ever ride a Royal Ascot winner. A short head second on Tuesday he looked like having a winner today with The Sir Michael Stoute trained filly, Heaven Sent, before she was just caught on the line. Ryan Moore is a former champion jockey, will probably regain his crown this year but as yet has never had a Royal Ascot winner, which after today is 77 rides,
He must think that his luck is cursed and in all honesty had a great chance today, but as in many sports, when your luck is out everything seems to be against you. Surely everyone would love to see Moore have a winner at the meeting, but they do not give them away and it is the big stage for which the greats are remembered. Unlucky to be second in The Derby, in the sense that New Approach showed up, on Tartan Bearer, Moore is certainly having a very unlucky spell.
So what are his chances on Thursday? He has 6 rides.
Sun Ship (IRE)
Sovereign's Honour (USA)
Allegretto (IRE)
Flawed Genius
Kensington Oval
Colony (IRE)
Its not going to be easy, but he has many chances, particularly with Flawed Genius and Colony.
Racing Looks Like This Today…
14:30 Norfolk Stakes (group 2) (2yo, Class 1, 5f, 15 runners)
15:05 Ribblesdale Stakes (fillies' Group 2) (3yo, Class 1, 1m 4f, 10 runners)
15:45 Gold Cup (group 1) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m 4f, 11 runners)
16:20 Britannia Stakes Heritage Handicap (str) (3yo, Class 2, 1m, 33 runners)
16:55 Hampton Court Stakes (listed) (3yo, Class 1, 1m 2f, 16 runners)
17:30 King George V Heritage Handicap (3yo, Class 2, 1m 4f, 19 runners)
Will Yeats Make History?
Yeats goes for a third successive Gold Cup, a feat only ever achieved by the legendary Sararo. It would be no surprise to see him do it, with Jonny Murtagh and Aiden O’Brien in great form, having 3 Group One Royal Ascot wins already in the first two days. Coastal Path however is a very serious obstacle for yeats to overcome, and the French challenger will be strongly fancied. Geordieland showed how good he is when winning at York under a genius ride last time, but let us not forget that Yeats is a consistent Group One Winner. It is his title and he is not going to go down without a fight. I would love to see a true champion make history and believe me, if anyone can do it it is The Aiden O’Brien team. I would argue he is the best trainer in the world, and he deserves his success, he is a driven and dedicated man.
yeats will be 6/4 or so, and would be the most popular winner of the week.

Day One- So Far So Good…
Now for Day Two of Royal Ascot…
Henry Shows Rare Class...
We are on target, Jonny Murtagh is leading jockey and Henrythenavigator won well. He is a true champion, dual Guineas and St James Palace wins put him in an exclusive club that not many horses have achieved. Murtagh even managed to make a mistake with his reigns and still he won readily. Great horse and I hope you filled your boots at 4-6.
Once again we told you!
Now For Day Two….
Today’s Race Programme Looks Like This;Live on BBC / ATR 2:30 Jersey Stakes (group 3) (3yo, Class 1, 7f, 18 runners)
3:05 Windsor Forest Stakes (fillies' Group 2) (str) (4yo+, Class 1, 1m, 13 runners)
3:45 Prince Of Wales's Stakes (group 1) (4yo+, Class 1, 1m 2f, 13 runners)
4:20 Royal Hunt Cup Handicap (str) (3yo+, Class 2, 1m, 30 runners)
4:55 Queen Mary Stakes (fillies' Group 2) (2yo, Class 1, 5f, 17 runners)
5:30 Sandringham Handicap (fillies' Listed) (str) (3yo, Class 1, 1m, 16 runners)
The highlight is the Group 1 Prince of Wale’s Stakes and the big betting race of the day is The Royal Hunt Cup.
Taking the latter first, this looks to be at the mercy of Bankable. This horse has risen in the weights by about a stone since the weights were allocated for this race, and Luca Cumani may have pulled of a real coup. Frankie Dettori rides what will be a short price, but not prohibitive price, favourite. Bankable should win and backing against a horse with a stone in hand would be incredibly brave. I think Bankable is a very good bet given he is clearly very well treated. Always tough races these big field handicaps, but there will never be a more obvious bet in a race like this than Bankable.
The Prince of Wale’s looks to be heading to Ballydoyle, with Duke of Marmalade being a very solid selection. I think he is a good thing, clearly he is the one to beat, having already taken two group one prizes this season. Conditions will suit and at the price this is a fantastic bet. The Duke beat Finsceal Beo at The Curragh, who ran well today and then won at Longchamps beating Sadex and Sageburg very comfortable. The form is rock solid and I can not see anything beating Duke of Marmalade.
Banakable and Duke of Marmalade will be a popular double. I confess that I have already placed this bet as part of a treble with Henrythenavigator.

BANKABLE

HENRYTHENAVIGATOR- FILL YER BOOTS..
ARE THEY MAD OFFERING 4/6?
I had Henrythenavigator as a 1-2 shot on my tissue, but he was 8/13 now best price 4/6 to complete a three year old hat-trick. This has got to be the bet of the week and I will have my biggest bet of the meeting. Flush with winnings from The Derby I really can not see this boy not winning. Let s remember he beat New Approach twice in two classics then New Approach won the Derby, the form is as rock solid as it gets. He has his firm ground once again and he should be unstoppable.
So who have the bookies got to pin their hopes on?
Stubbs Art will confirm form by being 3 or 4 lengths behind, Ravens Pass and Twice Over may fall short and Rio De La Plata doesn’t look in the same league. Twice Over is the interesting one, having being aimed at The Derby but not getting the trip. Would he have won the 2000 Guineas- well we find out today, but I can predict that he is NOT GOOD ENOUGH.
Falco, the most interesting contender from France, beat Rio De La Plata 3 lengths last time in France and could improve, but would need to improve a lot to go past Henry. Henrythenavigaor is well clear on Timeform ratings, and I suspect his official mark will be at least 10 pounds superior to the best of the rest.
All in all this looks the bet of the week, I will be filling my boots and you should too, Henrythenavigator will win, in style I forecast today.

ROYAL ASCOT STARTS TUESDAY...
Today's the day to have a break as the next five days are just amazing. The only thing to do today is put your bets on for top jockey at the meeting. Hot fav is Jonny Murtagh at 6-4 and that will do for me. Ryan Moore has never ridden a winner at Ascot but I am sure he will break that duck this week, but look at what Murtagh is riding. Henrythenavigator and Yeats look bankers and he has a book of rides for a stable that always deliver winners.
Top Ascot Jockey, Jonny Murtagh @ 6-4.

Timeform Charity Day at York..
One really must raise our hats to Timeform. Their Timeform charity day has raised £4.5m for charity over the past few years and Today at York is a great day of racing.
Press Release by York Racecourse;
The annual Timeform Charity Day, one of the most distinctive and prestigious fixtures in British racing, takes place at York on Saturday (June 14) – the second leg of the two-day June Meeting on the Knavesmire. This partnership between York Racecourse and Halifax-based Timeform has raised well over £4 million for charity with a focus on cancer relief. Saturday’s seven-race programme, which begins at 2-15 p.m., boasts record prize money in excess of £200,000, with the principal race being The Betfair Sprint, Britain’s most valuable sprint handicap for three-year-olds. Prize money for this ultra-competitive Heritage Handicap over six furlongs is at an all-time high of £100,000 and another good-sized field is assured. The roll of honour in this race includes top sprinters such as Cadeaux Genereux and Sheikh Albadou, while recent locally-trained winners include Tax Free, Dazzling Bay, Artie and Pepperdine Saturday’s opening race is the 20th running of The Queen Mother’s Cup, one of Europe’s top races for lady amateur riders, while the quality card includes other well-known races on Timeform Charity Day – The Cadogan Silver Salver Handicap Stakes, The Daniel Prenn Royal Yorkshire Handicap Stakes, The Leonard Sainer EBF Maiden Stakes, The Charles Henry Memorial Handicap Stakes and The Michael Sobell Maiden Stakes. Over £4.2 million has been raised for various charities, principally Macmillan Cancer Relief, since the inaugural Timeform Charity Day in 1971. This figure represents the combined proceeds of the racedays and Timeform’s eve-of-meeting dinner and auction at the racecourse, which features the Timeform Racing Personality of the Year Award, which was won last year by leading owner over Jumps, J.P. McManus. Amongst the items to be auctioned at the dinner include a two-week trip for two to next year’s Dubai World Cup meeting, a trip to next season’s Irish Guineas weekend, including visits to Ballydoyle and Coolmore and exclusive boxes at Lord’s, Royal Ascot and Wimbledon (donated by Betfair). Three races on Friday (2-20 p.m. start) are sponsored by HSS Hire, who return to York for the fourth year to support the racing programme on the Knavesmire. With over 400 branches, HSS Hire is the UK’s largest tool and equipment hire chain. The trio of races includes the feature contest of the afternoon – and the longest - The HSS Hire Stakes, a Handicap contest for stayers over the now - established round course, offering prize money of £17,000. The Rous Selling Stakes is also supported for the fourth year by engineering company, SKF (UK) Ltd., while regional train operator, First TransPennine Express renew their support of racing at York by sponsoring a competitive Handicap contest over nine furlongs. Friday’s final race, a Handicap contest for apprentice jockeys, is sponsored by Collingwood Cleaning Services, who are supporting the racing programme for the second year as part of a partnership that sees their team turn the racecourse around between racedays to be at its best for racegoers
There is a great day of racing on The Knavesmire today with the richest 3 year old Sprint Handicap in Europe- the Betfair Sprint. 20 runners go to post and ANCIEN REGIME will be a warm order. I have gone for Brave Prospector at 12-1 for Peter Chapple-Hyam, who I think has his horses in better order of late and this horse seems to be finding his stride. Van Bossed could be another big price horse to support for the one and only Dandy Nicholls. It will be a great race.
I also like Swinging Sixties in the 4.00 race for The same team that sadlle Ancien Regieme – Messer’s Robinson and Jarvis.
Have a great day at York!

Racing Shoots Itself in Foot Again ..
This story appeared today;
MICHAEL McALISTER has been officially cleared of any wrongdoing after a BHA investigation into Tony Dobbin's final race at Carlisle in April. Dobbin retired after winning the Dobbs Finale & Future Best Wishes Novices' Chase at the Cumbrian venue on April 10 with McAlister finishing second aboard Lord Samposin. However, the local stewards referred the matter to the BHA after deciding that McAlister had breached Rule 157 and not ridden to obtain the best possible placing.
The BHA carried out a full investigation and following presentations from McAlister's legal representative and the BHA's own team, took the view that "McAlister's ride throughout the race was a positive one, and as a consequence satisfied the requirement of the Rules of Racing that every horse should run on its merits." The conditional was therefore cleared of any rule breaches.
Words fail me! Either it was fine in which case nothing should have been said or it wasn’t . For my money it looked pretty obvious what went on. Racing really is run by a strange bunch.

BLOODY AUSSIES ..
The Ashes may not be taking place this summer, but our old enemy the Aussies are here this summer, on the turf at Royal Ascot. Mark Johnston, never one to duck an issue, seems to have incensed the trainers from down under. The article from today’s Racing Post gives you a flavour of what its all about;
AN EXTRAORDINARY war of words over drug use is threatening to overshadow the build up to Royal Ascot, after the trainers of Australian sprint stars Takeover Target and Magnus ridiculed Middleham trainer Mark Johnston for his stance on the use of anabolic steroids.
Peter Moody, trainer of Magnus, questioned Johnston's competence as a veterinary surgeon and accused him of "talking out of his backside" for the suggestion that 2006 King's Stand Stakes winner Takeover Target should not have been invited back to Ascot after failing a drug test in Hong Kong later that year.
Takeover Target may have an unfair advantage due to the lasting effects of steroid use, said Johnston.
Adding to the furore, Takeover Target's trainer Joe Janiak said the winner of £2.1 million had been clear of steroids since 2006, then took a sideswipe at Johnston's fellow trainer Jeremy Noseda for criticising travel subsidies paid by Ascot to connections of Australian runners.
So what’s the score here? Is it a case of pick on the Aussies? NO, it’s a case of fairs fair and doing things the right way. Of course Mark Johnston is correct, if a horse fails a drug test, then why would we invite them, and help pay their costs, to Royal Ascot? The Aussies can bleat all day long, but this is, to coin the title of Jon Gaunt’s next book, Great Britain not Rubbish Britain, and why would we want to spoil the most British of events with controversy? Are we so short of sprinters that we have to import them? Of course not.
In some countries the use of steroids is banned, in others its legal. However let us not forget that as well as a leading trainer Mark Johnston is a qualified vet and knows what he is saying. He may be accused of talking out of his backside, by Peter Moody, but I suspect that Mr Johnston’s argument will be based on a more educated point of view than that, if indeed any, put forward by the Australians. Our authorities work tirelessly to keep the sport free of drugs and impose strict penalties for breaching of those rules, on one hand, then on the other they openly invite and contribute to the costs of transport horses which have openly and actually used steroids.
This is Britain all over and I can only sympathise with messes Johnston and Noseda. Royal Ascot should have the best horses, it is the best Racing event in the world, but we should NEVER compromise our integrity in this country and I totally support Mark Johnston’s position. I would add to it further by saying to drug cheats, from wherever they may originate, to bugger off and do not contaminate the tradition and the spirit of Royal Ascot, we play with a straight bat in this country. Don’t come here and stand in your top hat and tales pretending, the trainers in this country, in Ireland and in fact most of Europe achieve what they achieve through skill, dedication hard work and a spirit of competition based of hundreds of years of British fair play. If you cant do that and need to use steroids, then keep well away.
As for contributing to their costs., it beggars belief. Perhaps this would be better spent helping smaller owners with increasing costs of transport at home?
All I have to say in conclusion is – BLOODY AUSSIES!

The Listener- Unpopular Move...
I can report that we had the biggest reaction to anything we have written on The Diary about The Listener. Regrettably the content of the emails preclude me from quoting them word for word but they do seem to call into question the parentage of the owner. Like I wrote yesterday the owner can do as he wishes with his own horse, but it does seem very harsh. I was reminded by Chris who said that the owner jocked off Gold Cup Winning jockey Andrew Thornton after falling on the horse, but this decision is one people have no support for.
I was also asked to note that there is a site where you can follow Robert Alner’s progress which I am happy to do. CLICK HERE for the site,
York This Week- Royal Ascot Next Week..
For Flat racing this is the best week of the year. There is a two day meeting at York on Friday and Saturday, with the highlight being The £100,000 added Betfair Sprint on Saturday, followed by five days at Royal Ascot. I personally prefer Cheltenham as an event to attend, but the British Summer in its full glory at Royal Ascot is a fabulous week that is the height of ‘Britishness’. There certainly is nothing in racing terms that comes close to Royal Ascot anywhere in The World.
We will be focusing very heavily on Royal Ascot next week, both on here and on our Betting Service, Our Pay as You Win Service is Free to Register and you only pay a flat fee per winner. You call as and when you want to so there are no tie-ins. For details click HERE
Top quality races are a Pro-Punters bread and butter. Everything has been trained to 100% fitness, everything is trying and there is plenty of form to assist. Some of the best horses in training will run next week, and like we did at Cheltenham and Ascot last year we will be targeting a very healthy profit.
It looks like we will see dual 2000 Guineas winner Henrythenavigator in action, last years superstar two year old Winker Watson and a strong team from Godolphin. It will simply be the best week of the flat racing season.
Over the next few days we will be looking in detail at Royal Ascot 2008.

LISTENER TO BE MOVED AWAY FROM ALNER
It has been reported that THE LISTENER is to be moved out of the Alner yard, which leads to an interesting debate.
The report today (by The Press Association) says;
The Listener has left the yard of Robert and Sally Alner and will now be trained by their former assistant Nick Mitchell. The nine-year-old, owned by Raymond Humphreys whose horses run under the banner of Old Moss Farm, has won three Grade One chases in Ireland over the last two seasons. Mitchell has decided to set up on his own next term and will be operating out of a 17-box yard at Piddletrenthide in Dorset.
Robert Alner is still in hospital following a serious car crash in November and he is unlikely to ever walk again. Sally Alner now shares the licence but refused to get drawn into a war of words. "Nick Mitchell used to be our assistant and he is taking over Mr Humphreys Old Moss Farm horses. There's worse things that have happened at sea," she said. "It won't be the first horses taken away and it won't be the last. There is no ill feeling."It certainly hasn't come as a surprise and I've got other things to think about really."
Mitchell told the Racing Post: "I became aware of it on Monday morning. I have been over to see Sally and the feeling is that if he is going to go somewhere she is glad he is coming here. "Basically he (Humphreys) wants continuity and I have had a close association with The Listener since he turned up at the yard as a four-year-old and I've done a lot of work with him."
Many will say that the owner is kicking the yard whilst they are down. Indeed Three Grade One victories is something very few horses achieve and no one can say that the yard has not done well with the horse.
Of course the owner has the right to do what he wants, and I have moved horses away, and indeed moved away from yards when I am not happy, but maybe if I had three Grade One wins it would be a different story.
Mrs Alner’s attitude is exemplary and I have to say that I would feel the same, faced with other problems of a much greater magnitude. I wish the Alner’s all the best and my fist impression is that they probably need the support of friends and owners at this time more than ever before, but again as an outsider looking in its easy to say. It must be a devastating blow to them to lose their best horse though.
It looks a bit harsh and is small reward for the success they have achieved with the horse. Maybe the owner feels he will be better served with a change of scene for the horse, but I would not risk unsettling the horse with a move at this stage in his career. I wish the Alner’s All The Best at this testing time.

SHOULD HAVE GONE TO SPECSAVERS LEWIS Carl Harris has the Headline They All Wanted!
Lewis Hamilton of McLaren failed to brake his car and hit Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari on the pit lanebefore Robert Kubica of BWM Sauber won the Formula One Canadian Grand Prix here on Sunday.
Thus, Hamilton will drop 10 places on the French Grand Prix starting grid, the same penalty imposed by race stewards on Nico Rosberg of Williams.
World champion Raikkonen stopped at the red light at the end of the pit lane on lap 20, with Polish driver Kubica waiting alongside, after they made their first stops while the safety car was deployed.
Hamilton, 23, who won in Monaco two weeks ago and led the race from pole position, failed to brake in time, piling hard into the back of the stationary Ferrari with Rosberg then shunting the McLaren and breaking his car's front wing.

TOLD YOU! NEW APPROACH WINS THE DERBY Carl Harris is a relieved man!
Well You can’t say we didn’t tell you! New Approach Won the Voadfone Derby at Epsom under a great ride by Kevin Manning to overcome a late challenge by Tartan Bearer.
AFTER ALL THE TALK, THE HORSE SHUT THE CRITICS UP WITH AN UNBELIEVABLE PERFORMANCE!
NEW APPROACH
WON- SP 5/1
ADV- 6/1
New Approach was our strong recommendation earlier this week when the declarations included the enigmatic colt. Jim Bolger came in for a lot of criticism from some in the media for the way he ‘has handled’ the participation of New Approach, but in truth he trains not for the media, not for punters but for the owners and they will have nothing but praise for Jim Bolger’s handling of things.
CLICK, RELAX AND WATCH THE 2008 DERBY
From the moment the horse arrived at Epsom Jim Bolger did everything in his power to make things easier for the horse, every minuscule detail taken into account. During the race the horse was pulling for his head and would not settle with the pace which was much slower than he would have been used to, but after turning for home when asked to quicken up he did so, but hit traffic problems. Manning skilfully took the horse right down the inside and when daylight appeared New Approach lengthened and quickened up, denying Tartan Bearer the opportunity to get in front, the pair were well clear of the third Casual Conquest.
From a personal point of view, I can tell you I have a very sore throat, but it looks like a good night ahead as I revealed (after they had weighed in) how much I actually had on the winner to my wife. I was so sure New Approach would win the race I just kept on backing him!
It was a thrilling finish to the best flat race in the World, all the sweeter when you are proved right!

ITS DERBY DAY Carl Harris Previews The Derby
The participation of New Approach in the Derby on Saturday has been a protracted saga, with the trainer, Jim Bolger, deciding only at the eleventh hour to run after previously stating that his champion two year old of 2007 would be unlikely to run. However, New Approach will line up at Epsom with an excellent chance of winning the world’s most important flat race. Unbeaten in five starts as a two year old New Approach started hot favourite for the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket but was beaten a short head by Henrythenavigator, and was then beaten more convincingly on faster ground in the rematch in the Irish 2000 Guineas.
The ground seemingly holds the key to New Approach and Epsom’s good to soft conditions coupled with the step up in trip to a mile and a half looks tailor made for the son of Galileo to prevail in a race otherwise short of genuine group one form. New Approach was put in at 6/1 when declarations were announced on Monday, third favourite behind Curtain Call and Casual Conquest. The money soon came and New Approach is now as low as 4-1 to win The Derby.
Had New Approach prevailed in either or both of the 2000 Guineas then there is no doubt he would have been a very short price favourite for the race which Authorized won at Odds On last year. There are horses in the eighteen strong field that have been impressive on the eye, but at a level way below that of New Approach. Curtain Call was made favourite after winning a Conditions event at Nottingham, albeit impressively but it was not a great race, the runner up has been well beaten three times since off a rating of only 93. That is not to say that Curtain Call is not a contender, but would I take as low as 7/2 on offer for Luca Cumaini’s colt? Not on your life!
The current favourite is Casual Conquest who looked very impressive when bolting up in the Derristown Stud Derby Trial, and is certainly a lively contender with no doubts over the distance, but again there are doubts over the quality of the opposition. New Approach is a Group One winner and has already been a close second in two classics. Jim Bolger has said that leaving New Approach in the race was a fortuitous mistake, but the softer ground and the horses wellbeing have been the deciding factor. This is a stable that consistently turns out top class three year olds and he would not be running at Epsom if he was not hopeful of winning, particularly as the horse is now owned by Sheik Mohammed’s wife.
My advice is to take the best price as quickly as possible on New Approach, as there is every likelihood he will start favourite on Saturday. I am so confident that New Approach will win that I have had my biggest bet of the year on him at 6/1. If he doesn’t win on Saturday then I may require the services of a divorce lawyer!

ITS OAKS DAY AT EPSOM Carl Harris on Why The Musidora winner looks set to Win The Oaks
Friday is The Epsom Oaks and it could be the start of a big weekend for Jim Bolger. He has the favourite in the shape of Lush Lashes, who looked head and shoulders above her rivals when winning the Musidora at York. Click on the Video to watch this race. You will see how effortlessly Lush lashes quickens up under and pulls clear of the rest easily.
CLICK TO WATCH THE MUSIDORA
I have seen little to suggest that there is anything better in the field than Lush Lashes. She ran creditably in the 1000 Guineas but the step up to 1m 4f looks to be the making of her. The ground will have some give in it, which should not inconvenience her at all. Chinese White would be the main danger, who looked really impressive when winning a listed race in Ireland. However, I was at York for the Musidora and was really taken by the performance of Lush Lashes and I do believe that the Musidora, much as The Dante for The Derby, is the premier trial and winners have an excellent record at Epsom.
Cape Amber ran well in the Musidora on only her second start to finish second and will improve, but would have to find quite a lot to improve past Lush Lashes. Lush Lashes will be a warm order and is currently 3/1 favourite, which I think is excellent value. Remember you can get non-runner no bet with most bookmakers.
Take a look at Lush Lashes in The Musidora and make up your own mind.

MISSING WETHERBY STEEPLE CHASES When Will We See Fences at Wetherby Again?
Steeple Chases at Wetherby are legendary, but sadly there have not been any at the North Yorkshire venue for months, and no prospect of any in the near future. It all stems from work to widen the A1, which meant that the chase course had to be repositioned.
For whatever reason the ground has not settled and it is only hurdles and flat races that can be staged at the track.
Wetherby provides one of the stiffest tests in the North over the bigger fences and it is a crying shame that we are deprived of them. One of the best races is the Charlie Hall Chase, and one of the best in recent years was when OneMan won, under Richard Dunwoody. Click the Video above to see the closing stages.
It clearly is not the fault of the racecourse. It is all in the name of improving the roads, but hopefully we can get chases back, for next season at Wetherby. The course has been dramatically modernised and the new stand is just fantastic, with an excellent restaurant.
I had one of the best days racing there when Loulou Nivernais won there, and when I become a trainer I will have a Wetherby chase win as one of my key targets.

LUMP ON NEW APPROACH AT 6/1 FOR EPSOM GLORY Carl Harris on Why New Approach is Excellent Value for The Derby
Ask Yourself These Questions Before betting in The Derby;
If Henrythenavigator had not run in the two 2000 Guineas and New Approach had won them both, then what price would he be for the Derby?
How many proven Group One performers line up on Saturday?
The Derby field has been confirmed, and the exciting news is that NEW APPROACH takes his place at Epsom on Saturday. This is a horse who looks to be bred for middle distances, and goes in to the race as the Champion 2 year old and second in two classics (over 1 mile) already this season. At 6/1, with a Non-Runner, No bet Guarantee generally on offer this is a fantastic bet. In a race where genuine Group One form is scarce then New Approach fits the bill, and is worth a serious investment.
It does seem that New Approach has been crying out for the step up in trip, and with a bit of juice in the ground all looks well for a good crack at the biggest flat race in The World. Jim Bolger reports the horse to have come out of his defeat by Henrythenavigator at The Curragh very well. The ground was the undoing of his challenge over a mile, but the step up in trip and the softer ground looks tailor made for this son of Galileo. Unbeaten in five starts as a two year old, he has been second twice to Henrythenavigator, which let us not forget were in Classics, and it is clear that softer ground and a longer trip are what New Approach needs.
So why is he third in the betting?
In short I can not explain that. There are horses in the 18 strong field that have impressed, but at a level way way below that of New Approach. Curtain Call won a Conditions event at Nottingham, albeit impressively this was not a great race, the runner up has been well beaten three times since and is rated 93. That is not to say that Curtain Call is not a contender, but would we I take as low as 7/2 on offer for Luca Cumaini’s colt? Not on your life, but I will lay that price all day long! The current favourite is Casual Conquest who looked very impressive when bolting up in the Derristown Stud Derby Trial, and is certainly a lively contender.
Jim Bolger says that leaving New Approach in the race was a mistake, but the softer ground and the horses wellbeing have been the deciding factor. This is a stable that consistently turns out top class three year olds and he would not be running at Epsom if he was not hopeful of winning. I have examined this race in detail and I see New Approach as the best bet in the race, but there is always a lot of unknown quantities, but this is a top class horse and in a year when there has been little in the way of genuine top quality Derby pointers then New Approach stands out like a beacon. Let me ask this question, If Henrythenavigator had not run in the two 2000 Guineas and New Approach had won them both, then what price would he be for the Derby?
I asked this to one of my friends, a bookmaker, who said probably odds on! Well, Henrythenavigator has taken a different route and will not line up in The Derby. Let me rephrase my Question, If Henrythenavigator was in The Derby What Price would he be? A lot shorter than 6-1 is the answer.
I have just had £500 on New Approach to win, at 6-1. I am really confident that if the ground, as it will be, has some give in it then New Approach is a great bet for The Derby. I think that he will win and that there is every chance that New Approach could be a great middle distance horse, and could win the Derby by a wide margin. I have not seen many better 6-1 bets and I urge you to take advantage of a price that I do not think will last very long.

WHAT A WEEKEND FOR OUR SERVICE Winners Galore on the Pay as You Win Service
If you are a Telewin Pay as you Win Customer then you will have a huge smile on your face this morning.
On Saturday we advised the Biggest Bet of 2008, and indeed taking the early price of 7-4 was real value as Major Cadeaux won at an SP of 10-11. If you read Racing Diary on Saturday you would also have backed the major.
Saturday's big bet on Major Cadeaux was complimented by two exceptionally strong bets. Fat Boy won the opener at Haydock, showing he really was a good thing and should have probably been odds on. We also advised that Ezdiyaad would win if it ran. Marcus Tregoning need to confirm the ground was fine before running, but we said if it ran it would win, which it did readily.
Three out of Three on Saturday was complimented by two serious Irish Bets on Sunday. King Rama available at 5-4 in the morning was an easy winner at an SP of 1-2, landing a huge Irish gamble.
In the 5-15 at Listowel, Callow Lake looked like an odds on shot on paper but was sent off 6-4. Our advice was to have a serious bet on this horse at Odds against and it ran out an easy winner.
